1.] How Do We Live Sinless Lives?

Now all during the winter, we were looking at what is wrong with the human race?! And we said what's wrong is sin.

So now the question that we have to face is: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶-𝘀𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲?

How do we lead a life that is increasingly free from the ruinous power of sin now?

Somebody says an anti-sin life, you mean a good life —well the problem with that word is we've seen that sin is much more than breaking rules.

Therefore, to live a Christian life would mean much more than keeping rules. I mean I hope if any of you were here for any of that series—you will know that one thing.

You see that is:

     You can keep rules even very moralistically      & still be in the grip of sin, self-righteousness      & self-centeredness of sin; and therefore the      Christian life, the anti-sin life, a life free from      the ruinous power of sin is much more than      just a good life.

     It's a love life, it's a life of love.

   •  It's a life transformed psychologically,    •  It's a life transformed spiritually,    •  It's a life transformed sociologically,    •  It's a life transformed every way

And this passage is perhaps the very best passage in the Bible to tell us what it means to live that life.

   •  What that life is    •  What it's characterized by    •  How it can be cultivated

And the problem is that when you read 1 Corinthians 13, because it is so famous, surely you've heard it read at weddings & you've heard it read at funerals, and you have heard it read at special occasions.

You've seen it in collections.

It's almost always a standalone passage which is fine because it is it's a brilliant passage — it's a beautiful passage, it's a wonderful passage.

1.1] This is a Rebuke

But you don't really know its impact.

And what it's really saying unless you understand that it's CH 13 & there were 12 CHs before; & there is three CHs after & that it's this is part of a letter..

   •  Therefore this is part of a story.    •  This is part of a conversation Paul's having      with the young Church of Corinth.

A Church very much like Redeemer about 5-6 years old planted in a city very much like New York & this is part of a conversation he's having with them.

And it's part of a story.

     And you're not going to understand what      an unbelievable rebuke this CH is to the      people who got the letter.

     I want you to know there's a tremendous      rebuke here. Paul actually deliberately      says something in the most provocative      stunning & challenging way.

And it's right there, it's printed in your bulletin v.1-3 I know you've heard this read many times and it just sort of soothes you.

¹ If I speak in the tongues of men and of Angels, but have not love, I am only a ringing gong or a clanging cymbal. ² If I have the gift of prophecy & can fathom all mysteries & all knowledge—& if I have absolute faith so as to move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

³ If I give all I possess to the poor and exult in the surrender of my body, but have not love — I gain nothing.

You see! And you say, “Ah but the people who got this, if you understand the story. And if you do not understand the story, you don't understand what it's really saying.

And if you do not understand what it is saying, you haven't heard GOD's voice in it. You will not unless you understand all that you don't realize that this is an unbelievable rebuke.

   •  This is a rocket    •  This is a bombshell

Paul is saying something almost as outrageously as he possibly can--to get their attention. So if you are going to understand it, you have to understand:

[a] The story behind it & then [b] If you understand the story you can grasp the       bombshell that Paul is dropping on them; the       essential point & then [c] We'll apply it to three kinds of people & then [d] We'll leave, we'll get back to it next week.
