Bye, Bye Lucy: Part 3

This is where I finally get to talking about Lisanna. She is the most significant person in these stories. She's kind of like Zeref. Everything that happens in these stories happens because of her.

However, unlike Zeref, there is no good reason to be threatened by her at this point in the series.

Lisanna spent two years in a world without magic. There's no reason for even Lucy (not that she's terribly weak anyway) should be threatened by someone who hasn't been able to use magic in two years.

Even if I could believe that there was no such thing as magical atrophy and Lisanna was able to use magic just as well as before because of the return to Tenrou, that's not worth much. Lisanna was of little help on Tenrou Island, which wasn't too far away from Edolas arc.

You could argue that the fights were hard for even the people she was fighting with. That's fine, but I think it's telling that Lucy is more confident in her ability to beat Hades than Lisanna. Not to mention that Lucy would probably win any fight anyway because MCs always win. (Unless it's the GMG. Or for the plot.)

So remember how Lucy getting kicked out of the guild makes no sense anyway? If the purpose is to replace a weak member for a stronger member, they failed.

But let's say, for argument's sake, that Lisanna has stronger magic than Lucy. Nothing that we know about Lisanna gives off the impression that she would be a mean person. Like many Nalu shippers will tell you, Lisanna barely has any screen time and, depending on your interpretation of “Natsu and the Dragon Egg”, no substantial canon time to see her character fleshed out before Edolas arc.

In talking about Lisanna when she's dead, no one talks about her as if she is a mean person. And, up to the time I’m putting this post up to be posted, about the meanest things she's done is tell Natsu not to look at her in the Tartarus jail cell in the manga and push him off her in the anime. Both of which are pretty reasonable actions, all things considered.

And even if Lisanna had the magic power and the temperament, it would still make no sense for her to be threatened by Lucy. I'm not going to use the argument that she's okay with Nalu as it is because that's the kind of argument that would come from someone who actually had respect for romantic Nalu. Instead, I'll use the argument you'd expect me to use if you know me.

At this point in the story, Nalu isn't anywhere near a romantic possibility. They do tons of stuff together, but we haven't gotten anything yet that screams “These two are totally in love”. According to that one afterword, that's by design. Even if there was, again, literally all Natsu would have to do is have a simple conversation with Lisanna explaining his relationship with Lucy.

Now, one easy way to write around this is to have Lisanna be under the influence of some sort of evil magic. Usually, it has something to do with Lisanna coming back from Edolas having a negative effect on her. The obvious problem with this is that the only person dealing with this type of magic is Lisanna. Why is no one else who's gone to Edolas and come back having the same thing happen to them? Why are Mystogan and Porlyusica totally fine? Heck, if almost all of Magnolia turned into lacrima, I'm pretty sure something would be wrong with everyone but Lisanna instead.

By the way, let’s talk about Lisanna’s siblings. There are two problems with the way they’re written in these stories.

The first is that, when Lisanna ends up being evil, they go along with Lisanna’s plan. I get the idea of this is that they’re siblings and they want to stick with each other. But if the issue is that Lisanna is evil, wouldn’t they be the first to notice that something is off with Lisanna? Why would Lucy recognize that something is off with Lisanna, especially since she hasn’t known about her before any of her siblings recognize what’s going on?

If you want to say they get influenced by the same evil Lisanna gets influenced by, then you dealt with that issue. But then, isn’t it only a matter of time before Lucy and some other people in the guild connect the dots, notice that the people that are closest to Lisanna are acting strange and try to do something about it?

Unless your plan is to make everyone in the guild evil except Lucy which also has the same problems but, at least, Lucy will have more have more time to work with.

The second goes back to a point I said I’d get back to in part 1. Often Mirajane and Elfman are some of the few people still talking to Lucy once Lisanna comes back. So, you’re willing to tell me that two of the people that care about both Lisanna and Lucy don’t try to do anything about the fact that they don’t get along? Oh, but they’re some of the same people that get torn apart when Lucy ends up leaving the guild as if they could do nothing about it at all.

Often people write Lisanna in her right mind. However, her replacing Lucy then brings up a similar issue that I brought up with members of Team Natsu who still talk to Lucy. Why does she do nothing to keep Lucy in? She might object to the decision, but she does nothing to change Natsu’s mind.

And worst of all for Lisanna is that once Lucy leaves, she ceases to be relevant in most of these stories. What was even the point of bringing her back in these stories in the first place? If you need Lucy to get out of Team Natsu, couldn't you think of a better way to do it?

I argued that you have two reasons to get Lucy off the team that doesn't involve Lucy getting kicked off for Lisanna. If you chose the second idea, you could have Lisanna feel something over being partially responsible for Lucy leaving and try to reach out to Lucy.

If you need to have someone be the reason Lucy leaves and they have to be evil, here's an idea: Have one of the old villains join the guild, regardless of whether they fought Lucy. Lucy is the only person that doesn't trust them. And why should she? After all, they were a former villain. She shows open distrust for them joining, similar to Erza being wary of Gajeel.

Because of that, the guild gets mad at her for not extending forgiveness to them. Said villain frames something bad happening to Team Natsu on Lucy and she gets kicked out of both the team and the guild. If this sounds familiar to some of you, I made similar suggestions in a previous post.

But if I was going to write one of these stories, here's what I would do now that I've read so many of these stories.

Lucy goes into the guild and people treat her differently. Even to the point that Team Natsu ignores her. At first, Lucy suspects that Lisanna is causing people to be that way. However, she ends up realizing that the real culprit is an incredibly obscure member of pre-Tenrou Fairy Tail: Mickey Chickentiger.

Yes, she's an actual character that was a part of the canon universe. Look up her tag.

After growing tired of being ignored by the rest of the guild, she decides to get revenge. She enhances her ability to collect wandering souls to the point where she can cause them to possess other people and control them like puppets. She takes Lucy - the only one who she considers would definitely be able to see what’s going on - out of the guild. Once she’s gone, rules over them with an iron fist. And a bunch of other stuff happens.

Do you want to know what my favorite thing about this plan is? Most of your reading probably didn’t even remember that Mickey Chickentiger was even a member of the guild in the first place. Even if you remember the name, I’m willing to bet that you haven’t even realized that I haven’t been describing Mickey’s magic in the first place. I’ve actually been describing the magic of another little known Fairy Tail member: Chico C Hammitt. (Of course, I actually would use Chico’s name.)

Now, everything I’ve written in this series is the stuff most people get mad at whenever the idea that these stories are bad is brought up. A lot of people complain about how no one would ignore Lucy if Lisanna came back. Tons of people have loathed over the fact that Lucy gets kicked out of Team Natsu. Plenty of people complains about the way Lisanna is written in these stories, myself included.

Most people talking about these stories just say that one of those things make no sense and stop there. If I were to stop here and make all of this one post, this series would be about the average length of one of “My Incredibly Unpopular Thoughts” post.

But this isn't even everything. Yes, this is only the halfway point in my series. In fact, in many of the stories I've read, all of the tropes I've mentioned happen in one chapter. And these stories only make less sense from here one out.
