Much of our mental suffering comes from how tightly we hold our beliefs. In the monastery my teacher Ajahn Chah used to smile and ask, "Is it true?" He wanted us to learn to hold our thoughts lightly. Within the stillness of meditation we learn to observe how words and images arise and then vanish. When we let thoughts come and go without clinging, we can use thought, but we rest in the heart. This is where we need to be introducing meditation. These kids are open and still connected to that beautiful truth we are all born into. This is one of those places where the impact of meditation shows its power right upfront, close, and personal. I meet so many amazing teachers here in Denver, and all over the world, through my meditation practice. I’m blown away at the number of schools that are allowing meditation to be offered. Some schools are actually replacing detention with meditation, and having huge success. The promise of school yoga. Research on school-based mindful yoga is still in its infancy. Several research reviews support implementing these programs, but it’s important to keep in mind that some studies have found limited or no effects from them. And many studies use “self-report” questionnaires where students rate themselves, rather than collecting objective data or reports from parents and teachers. Larger, more rigorous research needs to be done to clarify the benefits of these programs and what causes them, including the optimal amount of practice time and best practices for implementation. In just the past two years, more than 350 new studies have come out exploring the benefits of yoga and mindfulness for youth—a clear sign that interest in this subject is growing rapidly. We’re confident that the evidence for yoga in schools will continue to expand, and that it will help students cultivate social, emotional, and physical health; academic success; and a positive school climate. So here is my first class with St. Janan Luwum Kabalagala branch, students shown up in big number to do yoga even though the challenge was yoga mats but it didn't stop us from doing the session. I did with them some breathing techniques which were so challenging to some of them and then introduction to yoga that's beginner's class.
