Here are some little facts about Tommy I learned while rewatching the Begins episodes from season 2
-His favorite movie is Love, Actually (Chimney Begins)
-He says some of his interests include monster trucks and craft beer (Chimney Begins)
-He apparently had a girlfriend around the time that Hen started at the 118. Captain Gerrard mentions that Tommy’s girlfriend is supposed to be coming to the firehouse to cook them dinner at some point, and Tommy says that it will happen (Hen Begins)
-He’s seen Fight Club and knows the movie well enough to quote it (Bobby Begins Again)
-He has a scar on his torso from a piece of shrapnel at a factory explosion (Bobby Begins Again)
Also if anyone is curious about his relationship and/or sexuality history, when he’s at the bar with Chim, Hen, and Bobby he claims that being single is easier, because having scars impresses women but getting them freaks them out (this instantly reminded me of Buck, specifically Buck and Ali)

If I had a nickel for every time Sal teased Tommy about being gay in the begins episodes, I’d have two nickels.
Which isn’t much, but it’s weird it happened twice.

I just rewatched Hen & Chimney begins (Bobby begins again is running in the background as I type this) and it's interesting how Tommy changes between these episodes. With Chim he's actively hostile in the same way the other firefighters are, with Hen he's much more passive. By the time Bobby comes around Hen and Chim have become part of the team. (longer analysis/headcanon under the cut)
Anyway my headcanon is that Tommy came out to whatever family he had left immediately before joining the firedepartment and it went badly. That's why when he got to the 118 and met Captain Gerrard he just fell in line with the status quo, kept his head down and tried to not attract any attention to himself.
He took one step out of the closet with his family and metaphorically got punched in the guts for it. He wasn't about to have a repeat of that experience. Took him almost dying and being saved by the new kid to even start pulling his head out of his arse. That's when he stopped doubling down on his colleagues' bullshit and just stayed silently complicit.
After Hen joined Gerrard's behaviour got worse or maybe just more obvious. Which on the one hand, scary as fuck. That's what they'd treat him like if he came out. On the other hand- how could he just ignore that? So he filed a complaint. An another one. So did some of the others, even Sal seemed to have had enough of the Captain's shit at some point. They got rid of Gerrard eventually.
I guess after that is when they all become friendly. In Bobby begins again, Hen confronts Bobby about firing Sal. She's also the one in charge of the bets. Her, Chimney and Tommy are close enough to casually hang out over drinks after shift. Meaning to say even Hen who had the worst experience at the station out of all of them found a way to forgive and connect with the other firefighters.
Tommy still isn't out though. Claims staying single is easier because women freak out about the the dangers of the job. The 118 is not an actual family (yet), they're more work friends who get along well, but their private lives are still that, private, and Tommy's afraid. He doesn't have much else outside of this team and they all have this image of him in their heads. Dumbass macho guy who's still learning to be better. Which isn't wrong, but also only half the truth.
Staying in the closet doesn't feel great though either. His 30th birthday came and went and he's never been in a real relationship that lasted longer than a couple of months. He doesn't want to live another 30 years in the closet. So he transfers to Air Operations. Fresh start and everything. He'll miss the team, but there'll be another team he'll be part of and maybe this time around Tommy can do right by them from the get go.

OK I know we're all freaking out over the new episode still but no one mentions how Chimney begins is probably one of the best episodes of this show, and it's a crime I'm only realising it now that I'm rewatching the eps with the old 118 for... no reason

Rewatching Chimney begins and I must say: Tommy was a little fruity 🤔🤔
I mean, he kinda of avoid his captain question about his girlfriend and when she would cook for them 🤔🤔
Also, when Chimney and Tommy where on the firetruck, Tommy was just staring at Chimney like really staring 🤔🤔
Also when Tommy aswered Chimney question of what is his favorite movie he said Love, Actually (with this i don't want to say that straight men can't love a romantic movie but it's something not so cummon🤔🤔)
And now in s7, Chimney calls Tommy cool and at the basketball ground Tommy called him "Howie" ❤️
(P.s: i think Chimney is a mastermind because if you think about he was the one who saved Tommy from the fire and now he was the one being with Buck to play basketball togheter and also Chimney was the one calling Tommy for saving Athena and Bobby 👀👀)

Chimney Begins really is the perfect episode, and I could say I won’t elaborate but I must:
Montages - funny and sad and kinda disgusting and triumphant and just every emotion
Our introduction to resident source of wisdom, Eli
Karaoke Chim, my beloved
Mr and Mrs Lee are an adorable couple
Mrs Lee is a legend and the best mother-figure of the 118
Eli’s advice about handing it off just applies to the whole show
We’re reminded that Chim has gone through so much loss and rejection and struggle, and that his kindness is so hard-won and even more incredible for it
The foreshadowing of Kevin’s death, which is so incredibly painful, is so well done
The first look at Chim’s apartment and knowing what’s to come
Chim saying he never expected to live long and have a family and 🥺
He’s the first piece of the 118 we know and love and 🥰
