A day in Dubai- UAE (my 5th) While finding a place to eat
I got tired from walking inside the mall, got  hungry and decided to find a place to eat in the Food Court. I rounded for about three times trying to find what I wanna eat. There were so many choices. So many unfamiliar restaurants and unfamiliar food. I checked one more time. Counter to counter, Chinese, Japanese, Asian, Italian, Indian, and some other I’m not familiar with, etc etc but…

Taurus and Sagittarius
Taurus - what's your favourite food?
Am I boring if I say pizza? I feel like you can't go wrong with pizza, unless it's a shitty frozen one. Obviously the best pizzas are sat in a beach front restaurant in Italy on a family holiday where there's nothing but good vibes, but dominos is pretty good and my local pizza place sucks but I love it bc it just has never changed and like the memories that come with that pizza are everything. I also like salt and pepper chips a LOT (the best ones come from Newcastle and you bet I go all the way across the country for a fuckin Chinese) and salt and pepper chicken but only from my mates Chinese takeaway (might be the discount making it taste better?)
Sagittarius - what places would you like to travel in the future?
Everywhere 😩 I wanna go to Fiji to swim with sharks, I wanna go to Guam bc I accidentally scratched the flag off my map, I wanna go to NZ to visit my old boss, I wanna go to Canada bc my parents went when they were younger and said I'd LOVE it, I wanna go back to Perú bc of a guy, I wanna go back to Cambodia because of memories, I wanna go to South Africa to meet my friends family, I don't really want to but also really want to go to the states to see a few friends (@musicisunspokenfeelings is my no 1❤️) , I wanna go to North Korea bc ??????, I wanna go to Japan because WOW, I wanna go to Vietnam and Philippines because a couple friends are from there, I wanna go to Iceland bc the Icelandic ponies are fascinating, I want to go to Romania and rn I have a real chance of work there, I wanna go to Switzerland because HAVE YOU SEEN THAT PLACE???? I wanna go to Andorra bc I was so obsessed with the place when I was younger, I wanna go to Greenland bc it's huge, I wanna go to Colombia just to prove people wrong, I wanna go to Morocco to ride, I wanna go to Namibia for the safari, I wanna go to Kenya to make up for lost time, I wanna go to Madagascar bc of the movies, I wanna go to Oman to see a friend, I wanna go to UAE just to say "meh overrated", I wanna go to Egypt to volunteer, I wanna see all of Asia tbh I love it there, I wanna go to Chile to see why tf its so long, I wanna go to Brazil because of the football shirts (I don't even follow football, hate that game), I wanna go to Argentina for the Peruvian guy, I wanna go to Cuba just because of the name.
Really I just wanna be anywhere but the same place.

大家好! Besides yong tau foo, another healthy meal option for locals is lei cha (tea rice). Brown rice is commonly used in this dish, topped with choy sum (Chinese flowering cabbage), green beans, cabbage, tau kwa (firm tofu), chye poh (preserved turnip), peanuts and anchovies. It also comes with a green tea paste broth made from ground seeds, veggies and tea. I don't like basil and mint so I usually give the broth away. I don't like brown rice either except for congee but once all the toppings are mixed together with the rice, it's acceptable. MI, ML and CL introduced me to a lei cha stall and it was very tasty. The texture of the toppings was mostly crunchy, along with savoury notes from the anchovies and chye poh. YUM!

I thought of skipping news about the genocide in Gaza for this post but decided not to. There's too much suffering inflicted upon Palestinians. All the same, I'll need a short break to keep my spirits up, possibly for 1 or 2 weeks. I'll still be keeping abreast of the news and praying for an end to the war, but won't share articles for a short period of time. Maybe I'll post mukbangs or recipes, something more light-hearted and fun for abit before returning to the events in Gaza and the west bank.

I took leave on Friday so after my daily morning calisthenics, Pa and I treated ourselves to a buffet breakfast. First plate - cold soba, enoki mushrooms, seaweed and a tiny bit of soya sauce, smoked salmon, tofu with bakchoy and fish, steamed wong bak (Napa cabbage) with dried shrimp and conpoy, hashbrown and 2 eggs sunny side up. Next, more vegetables - mushrooms, wong bak, tofu with bakchoy and fish, topshell and cucumber salad, asparagus, braised chicken and siew mai. Third plate, fruit - watermelon, blueberries, dragonfruit, rock melon and delicious grapes. Finally, I shared waffles and ice cream with Pa. I was so stuffed, I went for a 15 minute walk/run at the park near my home later on to help with digestion; mostly brisk walking with about 5 minutes of running since I'm still new to running.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I introduced LL, my expat friend from China, to a place that serves 1 of the best meepok (flat yellow noodles) in Singapore. This isn't found at a hawker centre or hotel restaurant; it's a diner which specialises in siew lat (traditionally refers to roast pork and waxed duck, now commonly refers to roast meats). I ordered their char siew, green beans stirfried with garlic and har mai (dried shrimp), dong guai (angelica herb) roast duck and the star of the show, meepok. The char siew had a nice char and was lightly crispy on the outside and very tender on the inside. We adored it! Also loved their green beans which were fragrant and still retained a slight crunch. The duck was juicy with a robust herbal taste and that meepok, THAT MEEPOK! This is made in-house, not sourced from a supplier. It was slurpable, QQ and oh so smooooooth! This delighted our senses so much. Enjoy the video!
Well! It's the start of a brand new week and I'm feeling less exhausted after taking Friday off. There will be more to come as I clear my leave for the year and carry forward the number of leave days the company allows to 2025. Time really flies; we're approaching the end of the third quarter of 2024. My mini getaway with YL is also happening in 2 weeks. Can't wait! 下次见!

FLP CHAPBOOK OF THE DAY: Better Than Throwing Stones by Jan Ball
On SALE now! Pre-order Price Guarantee: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/better-than-throwing-stones-by-jan-ball/
At eighty-one years old, Jan Ball has pretty much learned what is better in life than throwing stones at children. Her #poems are filled with details of her various #life experiences: her seven years in a convent, parenting, life in Australia, teaching and extensive travel but also leave some unanswered questions like: Was That Stephen King? or Research Poem: Does Anyone Really Want to Know About Slime? Jan also raises questions in the declarative: Why I Collect Netsukes, The Battle Scars That Soldiers Get or Catholic Church in London; the latter where Jan revisits her convent days while in London or The Pope in Dorothy’s Magic Shoes where Jan reacts to Easter experiences in Sydney where she lived for fifteen years with her husband and two children. Most of the poems make literary references where Jan puts two and two together. The answer is not always obvious, however.
386 of Jan Ball’s poems appear in journals such as: Calyx, Phoebe, and Storm Cellar in the U.S. and internationally. Jan’s three chapbooks were published with Finishing Line Press as well as her first full-length poetry collection, I Wanted to Dance with My Father. She has been nominated twice for the Pushcart as well as twice for Best of the Net. At the personal level, Jan was a nun for seven years then met her Aussie husband and lived with him and their two children for fifteen years in Australia. They lived in Rochester, NY for fifteen years after that where Jan did a doctorate and wrote a dissertation, Age and Natural Order in Second Language Acquisition. They now live in Chicago half the year and Sarasota, Florida, the other half and like to cook for friends wherever they are.
PRAISE FOR Better Than Throwing Stones by Jan Ball
Ball’s most recent book flings the reader right into a collage of her many life stories, including glimpses into flickering churches, children’s games, books read and journeys between continents. Fruits and fragrances, mind and memory, teaching and learning all come together in a magical arc of a book that leaps seamlessly between worlds near and far, sacred and secular. Ball’s book is peppered with allusions to films and novels, as one who is equally at ease with sea creatures and doppelgangers, and who delights in spinning a tale or two, or ten, for the adventurous reader and armchair traveler.
–Donna Pucciani, poet, author of EDGES
So what IS better than throwing stones? Jan Ball gives us numerous ideas from a stint as a nun, marriage, parenting, teaching, traveling, reading, and research to having weird dreams. And turning a poet’s eye onto everything and every place. She takes us on a journey from her Chicago childhood in yellow keds through the novitiate, on to London, Australia, the South of France and back to Chicago. We watch from the sidelines as she subs in a special education class and teaches English to soldiers from the UAE. Her insights are often enriched with references to literature and popular culture.
I especially appreciate her talent for irony, as when the priest falls dead in the sanctuary just after passing the station of the cross called “Jesus is Condemned to Die” and her unusual juxtapositions, such as comparing the Pope with Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. Jan also has a gift for simile, e.g., “I suddenly feel that I could scurry as fast / as a silvery sand crab.” And if you want a few laughs, you will find them too, and not only in “one more mouse poem.”
–Wilda Morris, workshop chairperson of Poets & Patrons of Chicago, and author of Szechwan Shrimp and Fortune Cookies: Poems from a Chinese Restaurant, Pequod Poems: Gamming with Moby-Dick; and (forthcoming, The Unapproved Uncle.

Consumer Preferences Shaping UAE Food Service Landscape
Introduction:
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as a melting pot of cultures, reflecting a diverse culinary landscape that caters to a wide array of tastes and preferences. The UAE food service market has witnessed significant evolution over the years, driven largely by changing consumer preferences and lifestyles. In this blog, we delve into the key factors influencing consumer choices and how they are shaping the food service industry in the UAE.
Diversity in Cuisine:
One of the defining characteristics of the UAE food service market is its diverse range of cuisines. From traditional Emirati dishes to international fare, consumers in the UAE have access to a plethora of culinary options. Emirati cuisine, with its rich flavours and cultural significance, remains popular among locals and expatriates alike. However, the growing expatriate population has also led to increased demand for international cuisines such as Indian, Lebanese, Italian, and Chinese.
Health and Wellness Trends:
In recent years, there has been a notable shift towards healthier eating habits among UAE consumers. This has been fueled by growing awareness of the link between diet and health, as well as an increased focus on fitness and wellness. As a result, there is a growing demand for healthier food options, including organic, gluten-free, and plant-based offerings. Food service providers in the UAE are responding to this trend by incorporating healthier ingredients and cooking methods into their menus.
Convenience and Technology:
The UAE has one of the highest smartphone penetration rates globally, and technology plays a significant role in shaping consumer behaviour in the food service industry. With busy lifestyles and a preference for convenience, consumers in the UAE are increasingly turning to food delivery and online ordering platforms. This has led to the rapid growth of food delivery services, with companies like Deliveroo, Talabat, and Zomato gaining prominence in the market. Additionally, the use of technology in the form of mobile apps and digital menus has enhanced the overall dining experience for consumers.
Sustainability and Ethical Practices:
Sustainability and ethical considerations are becoming increasingly important factors influencing consumer preferences in the UAE food service market. With growing awareness of environmental issues and social responsibility, consumers are seeking out food service providers that prioritise sustainability and ethical practices. This includes initiatives such as sourcing local and organic ingredients, reducing food waste, and implementing eco-friendly packaging solutions. Restaurants and cafes that embrace these principles are likely to gain favour among environmentally conscious consumers.
Personalization and Customization:
In a bid to cater to individual preferences and tastes, many food service providers in the UAE are offering personalised and customizable options. Whether it's build-your-own bowls, customizable salads, or made-to-order dishes, consumers appreciate the ability to tailor their meals to suit their dietary requirements and flavour preferences. This focus on personalization not only enhances the dining experience but also fosters customer loyalty and repeat business.
Conclusion:
The UAE food service market landscape is dynamic and ever-evolving, driven by the diverse preferences and lifestyles of consumers. From a rich tapestry of culinary offerings to a growing emphasis on health, convenience, sustainability, and personalization, consumer preferences are shaping the way food is prepared, served, and enjoyed in the UAE. By staying attuned to these trends and adapting their offerings accordingly, food service providers can thrive in this competitive market and continue to delight UAE consumers with innovative and satisfying dining experiences.

Central in Peru crowned as the World’s Best Restaurant 2023: Here’s the full list and some travel tips
Tumblr media
Are you a foodie who loves to explore the best culinary experiences around the world? If so, you might be interested in the latest ranking of the World’s 50 best restaurants for 2023, sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna. The list was announced on June 20, 2023, at an awards ceremony in Valencia, Spain, and it features some of the most innovative and creative restaurants from different continents and cuisines.
The top spot went to Central, a restaurant in Lima, Peru, run by married chefs Virgilio Martínez and Pia León. Central’s tasting menu takes diners through the Peruvian ecosystem and its produce by focusing each course on specific altitudes. León’s restaurant Kjolle debuted on the list this year at No. 28. This also marks the first time a restaurant with a female chef has earned the top spot, and the first time a restaurant outside of Europe or the United States has won.
The second place was taken by Disfrutar, a restaurant in Barcelona, Spain, that offers a playful and avant-garde cuisine inspired by molecular gastronomy. The third place went to Diverxo, a restaurant in Madrid, Spain, that blends Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese flavors and techniques in an immersive and theatrical setting.
Other notable restaurants on the list include Alchemist in Copenhagen, Denmark, at No. 5, which serves a 50-course menu of experimental dishes in a futuristic dome; Maido in Lima, Peru, at No. 6, which specializes in Nikkei cuisine, a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian flavors; Lido 84 in Gardone Riviera, Italy, at No. 7, which showcases the regional ingredients and traditions of Lake Garda; and Atomix in New York City, USA, at No. 8, which offers a modern Korean tasting menu with artistic presentations.
The list also features some new entries and re-entries from different regions and cultures. For example, Trèsind Studio in Dubai, UAE, ranked at No. 11 as the highest entry for restaurants in the Middle East and Africa. Trèsind Studio serves an intimate and interactive Indian cuisine with a contemporary twist. Odette in Singapore ranked at No. 14 as the highest entry for restaurants in Asia. Odette is a French leaning tasting menu spot that uses Asian ingredients and influences.
Unfortunately, no Indian restaurant made it to the list this year. However, Indian cuisine did receive some recognition from other awards. Chef Garima Arora from Gaa in Bangkok, Thailand (No. 15 on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list) won the elit Vodka Asia’s Best Female Chef Award 2023. Chef Manish Mehrotra from Indian Accent in New Delhi (No. 18 on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list) won the American Express Icon Award 2023.
If you are curious about the full list of the World’s 50 best restaurants for 2023, you can check it out here. You can also watch the awards ceremony online here. And if you are feeling adventurous and want to visit some of these amazing restaurants yourself, you might want to check out some of these travel deals to the best restaurants.
I hope this draft helps you with your blog post. If you need any further assistance or feedback, please let me know. 😊
