Hi! So I'm also an author and I've had the same error. This error is not supposed to pop up when you have implicit_control_flow set to true (which you do, I checked your code).
I've posted about it on the forum. The author of Fallen Hero then posted with the same problem. I'm not sure it's exactly the same issue, as for me it popped up when running quicktest/randomtest. But the fact that it happens *sometimes* makes me think it might be. From a developer POV errors that aren't systematically reproducible (happen only some times and not others) are the WORST.
Anyway, it might be a good idea to let the CSIDE developpers know? Something strange is going on and I don't think it's something we as authors are doing wrong.
Technical stuff here for game devs :D You can ignore this post if you aren't an IF writer.
In my case, I figured out what was causing it, but yes you are right that this is no error on our part, it's just a weird bug in the ChoiceScript code. I couldn't find it at first because the error isn't even on the line that the error mentions, but the line before that, which is definitely a hassle to comb through and it should be fixed in the ChoiceScript base code itself.
But yes, so, the problem was that on the line before that, I was using *if commands and no *else at the end. Which shouldn't be a problem. But sometimes ChoiceScript freaks out because it thinks that if I use only *if's and not *else, then I didn't think of every possibility in the *if statements and if I continue with that, it will put the game into an infinite loop and it will break the game 😱
...It won't. But sometimes ChoiceScript gets confused with *if prompts. So I fixed it by simply replacing the last *if with an *else in the line before the error, and now everything is good. It should've been good before too, but yeah man, it's frustrating...
Edit: the problem wasn't even the indent. It was the *if's. So the error message lied on 2 accounts 😂
This is not a CSIDE error though. When I ran it through the normal ChoiceScript randomtests, outside of CSIDE, it sometimes still produced the error, but only on the randomtests. So it's a bug in the ChoiceScript base code itself, and I don't know if we can do anything about that, except trying to find workarounds to a problem that shouldn't even exist in the first place...
Frustrating.... Very frustrating.... 👺🔪

Hello, I'm glad I found this if early, it would be fun to follow along the development. The premise seems interesting. Would this game be made in twine or choicescript? You put both tags on the intro post.
I plan on doing both for now!
I prefer the customizable visuals of twine but choicescript was my first introduction into interactive fiction and it holds a special place in my heart so I wanted to create something with it. Plus I know some prefer choicescript’s style over twine so that too
When I release the first demo, there’ll be both a twine version and a choicescript version. I know I won’t be able to publish on both platforms (obviously), but that’s a looooong ways away or AKA a bridge i’ll cross when I get to it
So for now, expect both a twine demo and a choicescript version with each update !

Error
So, for some reason, an error is popping up for a few people that's showing that the game ends at chapter 2 part 2, with Marcus/Melissa taking the Mc's hand and going back to the dorm.
I don't really know what's causing this but I ran through the game and found no such errors. If you're getting an error such as that, you can go to the first chapter and choose to jump to "Chapter 2, part 2" (That's what I did, I'll do an extensive run-through hopefully tonight >.<) I'm so very sorry that you guys had to come up with that error! My beta readers didn't get that error either- So yeah, Sorry again! (Also I DESPERATELY need to rewrite chapter 2 XD)

Hi all,
(tl;dr - the story is definitely not going away. I just need to time to figure out wtf to do about it.)
UPDATE - I think it's working-ish. I had to remove the option to disable POV scenes for now, as it was causing a hangup for some reason. There is an updated link to the demo in the pinned post.
Just a quick note to say THANK YOU to everyone who reached out to warn me about dashingdon shutting down. I rarely follow the forum these days, so I honestly would never have known.
I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do - it unfortunately doesn't seem to be as easy as just porting it from one host to another. I'm getting weird errors and infinite loading in the first chapter alone.
I'm going to play around with it a little more today, and if that fails, I may see about moving things to itch (which, frankly, would be ideal). I made the choice a long time ago not to monetize this story upon completion, so that's honestly not a factor. It's simply about what's going to be the least headache. Even if I can continue to use choicescript (which I think I can, if I understand the terms), I have no idea about what the update/upload process is like.
During my hiatus, I messed around with Twine to try and remove TPW from choicescript entirely, but a) we're way, way past the point of converting this bad boy to new code and b) sugarcube and harlowe variables broke something inside me. I have, quite honestly, never felt rage like that.
Thanks as always for your support - I honestly would have given up on this a long time ago if not for you all. <3

Hi Kristi! I'm sure youve already had similar asks but I cannot for the life of me find them. I was wondering how you learned code for your IFs and in general. Did you start with interactive fiction or did you already have an introduction to coding previously? Thanks
Long story short, I took a template (I have a few linked on my itch.io page; I personally used the one from @/cerberus-writes), analyzed it and customized it based on what I understood. It was a lot of trial and error, with a ton of Google searches, but I was so determined to make it my own and stop using Choicescript (which yes, is what I started out with) that I pushed through any difficulties.
To be quite honest, I don't think I could do something like that again, but hey, this goes to show that if you put your mind to something, it can happen.
I've answered a few other asks like this (this is probably my most in depth response to it), but I usually just say that you need to play around with things. If you need more structure, you can always do (free) courses on CodeAcademy or The Odin Project but those mostly show you the basics of the HTML/CSS language, and not necessarily how to construct something you're happy with.

Party of Four: A Romance Dungeon Break Fantasy Interactive Fiction
Party of Four is an adult interactive fiction game with RPG, romance, and dungeon break themes written in ChoiceScript.
Synopsis:
The known world of Vert is at peril from dungeons: a land separate from yours, filled with traps, mazes, and monsters. The populace is in constant fear of portals appearing, where your two worlds connect, and spilling monsters across the landscape. The world of Vert relies on two things: the Heroes who band together to enter theses dungeons and close the portals, and the Gods who Mark them.
You grew up in a church of one of three patron gods; Nivari, Goddess of the Sun; Peysca, God of the Ocean; and Alina, God of Wilderness. One day a rumors of a dream amongst the clergy comes to light, depicting that you will be the next chosen Disciple, given a Divine Task both great and terrible. You will head into the dungeons, you will fight, or you will suffer the consequences.
Play as male, female, or nonbinary; be straight, gay, bisexual, asexual (sex adverse or sex willing), or aromantic.
Choose the God you follow: Nivari, Peysca, or Anila.
Choose your class: Warrior, Mage, or Healer. Differentiate your talent further by picking a specialization! Are you a faithful Warrior Templar, a whimsical Wind Mage, or maybe a bumbling Herbalist Healer?
Create your party from 5 selectable characters (not including yourself!). You can’t choose them all!
Romance a stoic shield maiden, a shy healer, your childhood friend, a brash mage, an aloof ranger, an elemental master, or a mysterious bard.
Demo is found here. If you play, please send any spelling, grammar, code, pacing, etc errors my way! General impressions or ideas are also very welcome. TYVM.
If you enjoy any of my games, please consider becoming a member on my patreon (free or otherwise).
State of the current demo: ~71k words, with a complete Prologue. Chapter 1 is in progress. Content Info: this game is for those 18+, due to graphic violence against both human and fantasy creatures, as well as (future) sexual content.
Romantic Options:
Raena: Your childhood friend who grew up as an orphan in the same church as you. She is the pride of the parish's Armsmaster and has been training on the bow since she could hold one. While she can be rash and impulsive, she admires you greatly and will go out of her way to help you out.
Vana Peacebearer: A shield maiden from a clerical family. She is slow to warm to others, but will always reciprocate any kindness she is shown. Vana will follow the player character out of a sense of duty, but there is something that she desperately wants and cannot have. . .
Maymie Fox: A mage with an affinity for short-range elemental attacks, Maymie will do whatever it takes to come out as the top dog. As an ex-street rat her morals are questionable at best, and vicious at worst. If you make a friend of her, she will drag you right to the top with her, whether you like it or not.
Jem Miye: A little shy, and a lot awkward, Jem is the quintessential healer. Like you, he's a Disciple, but to the God Melekoth, who rules the Moon. He has a feminine appearance that makes him insecure, but you can build him up with your friendship (or love).
Linzel Syrat: Linzel is just charming enough to mask how much he absolutely does not care about other people’s problems. He wants to join your party for the profit. After all, he has a giant spider/bat named Fancy to feed, and he’ll be the first one to tell you that insects and mice large enough to satisfy his bestie are not easily sourced outside of dungeons. (Familiar choice available to players who might suffer the 8-legged aversions.)
Aslo Gergin: Loud, brash, a man's man, Aslo is a mage who likes to fight on the front lines, no matter how ill-advised others think it is. He's more than happy to show off his scar collection to anyone that asks. And when he wants something, there is very little Aslo won't do to get it.
Sweets: A follower and devotee to the Goddess Myrtle, patron of music and merrymaking, Sweets is a rather playfully mysterious bard who resides in Sentari, the capital of Vert. They enjoy getting other people to talk about themselves and making a pretty penny at the night markets off accidental confessions or juicy gossip in general. Your name is on a lot of tongues lately and Sweets is very interested to know more.

Thank you so much, anon. I really needed to hear this. To be honest, I've been beating myself up with guilt and dread that the Twine build has errors and needs all this work and had to roll out before I had time to fix everything... so this message comes at the exact right time! Thank you so much for addressing that perfectionistic side of me, it's such a good reminder! And thank you so very much for the kind and encouraging words, your support means the world! 🥹❤️ I love you too, thanks so much again!

Quick Disclaimer: This is still the very early stages of a game, so I would like to preface this release by saying everything written up until now is subject to change as development progresses. I'm still learning a lot about choicescript as I write, so there are bound to be mistakes at the moment. With that being said, I hope everyone enjoys these first two chapters. Chop Shop is strictly 18+ for language, themes, and potential explicit content.
🔗 - Game Intro | Bug Report | ko-fi
WE ARE LIVE!!! Chop Shop has officially relaunched on Itch.io! Available to play on desktop, tablet and mobile.
Prologue - EP .02 are ready to play - the same as the previous demo - with a new word count of 120k. The choicescript demo will be taken down at the end of the month.
Thank you so much to those who have helped me during this transition period of development! It has been crazy frustrating but I am so much more in love with the game than ever. And thank you to everyone who has been patiently waiting - hope you enjoy all the new bits and bobs!!
PLAY THE NEW DEMO NOW!
AN: CS has had some significant rejigging and rewriting. You can read the authors notes under the cut.
chop shop now has it's own UI! woohoo! (totally did not kill me) this, of course, will come with teething problems and accessibility issues. i am welcome to constructive feedback!
there are a lot of new dialog boxes to explore, especially the dashboard, which includes the PC's profile, inventory, contacts and a glossary page. (the stat definitions page from the old choicescript demo has been scrapped, too much text that wasn't needed.)
chapters are now called episodes! not a huge change but i prefer the vibe yknow.
there have been some extensive rewrites - especially in ep .01, the bar scene got a lot more fleshing out - so i expect typos and grammar errors have slipped through. this doesn't bother me too much but i appreciate any one who spots them to send them in!
there is now an 'end game' scenario in ep. 01. i won't be providing a walkthrough as i think it's relatively obvious given the scenario but it does give you an achievement!
i've kept achievements like the old choicescript demo but it no longer rewards points. maybe i will think of something to reward the player with later down the line?? who knows
i don't want to explain ALL the new details as i really encourage people to go find all the new flavour text and other things etc!!
next -- if you have not noticed, i have added a bug report to the links list. all issues, bugs, and errors found in the public demo can now be reported via the new bug report form.
in terms of writing, i am now porting episode 3. i have had rewrite plans for this chapter for a while, so i imagine this port will take some time. i was in the middle of writing episode 4 when i decided to make the twine jump lmao, so it hasn't been touched for a LONG time, probably since march. i plan to jump straight back into writing when episode 3 is all done!
like before, ep 3 won't be released until ep 4 has a first draft and i'm happy with the shape and direction. so it will be some time before i am able to release new content. but - we ball!
thank you for reading this far and i hope you enjoy the new and improved demo! happy reading! - becky :^)

I was wondering what you would consider the best place to write is when you're drafting games? I've been using Scrivener myself to keep it all in one place but I'm not sure if that's the optimal way of working especially when there's multiple branches becoming involved. This will be my first cyoa game after primarily writing novels for years. Is there any advice you can give?
I recommend at minimum using a text-editing program that labels line numbers and makes it clear what your tabs are doing. It's extra helpful to use ones with ChoiceScript highlighters. A couple of examples are:
Notepad++ with ChoiceScript highlighters
Sublime Text with ChoiceScript highlighters
I used to use Sublime Text, but I now use Visual Studio Code with Stephen Granade's ChoiceScript plugin. This acts as a highlighter but can also highlight coding errors as well as automatically test the game within the VS Code window. The coding-error highlights have saved me SO much time:
VS Code ChoiceScript extension
You can also use CSIDE which is a very popular tool that can be used in your browser if you have DropBox, or downloaded and used on your machine. It isn't fully up-to-date with the ChoiceScript code currently, but a ton of people use it and find it useful.
Thank you for the ask! There are lots of people on the Choice of Games forum who can help out with any issues you have so do jump in, enjoy your writing, and good luck!

If it's okay to ask how did you learn to code in cogs?
Of course. Honestly, a lot of it just came from messing around with stuff on a test file, but there are some really good resources that are super helpful.
There's this tutorial PDF that has a full start-to-end walkthrough – https://forum.choiceofgames.com/t/choicescript-full-tutorial-finished/16130
There is also just the ChoiceScript wiki that has pages on each command and examples as well as another tutorial – https://choicescriptdev.fandom.com/wiki/ChoiceScript_Wiki
Those were the main two pages that I used to learn, but you can also always make a post looking for help and advice on the Choice forum in general and get some super helpful responses on errors and also on just how to do certain things or just look up your issue on there, and there might be some past posts with other people running into the same error.
I think the best way to really learn and get confident with it is just to kind of dive headfirst into coding with the language and try the different commands until you find a way of using them that you're happy with and find easy to work with. The main reason why, if you look at the code for my games, I use the fake_choice command a lot more than the normal choice one is that it's just easier to work with and doesn't restrict you to having to jump between different files or labels.
Hope that's somewhat helpful. 💖

Adoriel's Tears Review
I recently had to go travel and read a few works that I never got around to reading but was interested in.
PLEASE REMEMBER THIS REVIEW IS DONE BY ME AS A READER AND IS MY OWN OPINION.
This means I will review in accordance to my own tastes, how the game caters to me, and what I feel. Do not take my word as gospel, what I may not be interested in or dislike, may be what YOU are interested and love!!!
@adoriels-tears-if
Tumblr media
Synopsis:
Adoriel's Tears are a gift.
A light offered to the inhabitants of Terrybiël to end the conflicts that oppress the Four Peoples and eradicate the evil that was crawling on the continent.
But every light has its shadow and sometimes gifts are poisonous. For if magic comes from the heart, it takes a soul to master it, and fortunate are those who manage to find it. Without a counterpart, without a familiar, a Tear is nothing.
Just a curse. A child of madness. The darkness on Terrybiël. What must be destroyed before they destroy you.
Adoriel's Tears are a gift. At least for the others.
You're long past the point where your heart and soul should be singing together, and yet you're gifted. That's what made you lose everything you had as a child. Now, an opportunity presents itself. Should you take it, is it the right thing to do?
Without a soul and with a magic you can't control, the journey will be a risky one.
Especially since the smell of madness and blood is getting heavier and heavier on Terrybiël. Will you be able to fix everything, to find what you're looking for? Nothing is less sure.
And yet, this voice is calling you, whispering:
Come ! Come to me ! Come to me and don't be afraid.
Review:
The Good: Tobias is Ken, do not fight me on this.
youtube
Also, i wasnt aware what Snow was until i looked it up:
Tumblr media
SO FREAKING CUTE!
Anyways, I had a lot of fun with this one. It lures you into a false sense of security and wholesomeness only to abruptly show the player and MC the reality of the world. That their mother had been protecting them for a reason. The family dynamics, relationships between characters, and drama crafted got me in my feels enough to care! I also got to name my plushie rabbit Optimus Prime, which was fucking hilarious:
Tumblr media
Also i had alot of fun with the parental drama the MC can have with their father
Tumblr media
Ashleyn:
youtube
And with his fuckboi bros:
youtube
Adoriel's Tears does that thing really well, that thing that lets the reader fill in the blanks and make up their own assumptions for the characters until we actually meet them. Plus it lets us act out and be brats so we can break the hearts of all the adults around us that try their best!
Also there's moments like this:
Tumblr media
youtube
That honestly just adds that bit of humor that works without cause friction for the rest of the tone.
There was also a specific passage that felt emotionally charged and intense. Youll know what im talking about once you reach it, because it is very memorable. Without spoiling, it feels like justice coming forth to smite those that have wronged you.
The Bad: I know that Chapter 1 is a transfer from the original Choicescript, and it shows. The author has already expressed wanting to polish and clean it up, which i think is the right step as the second chapter and onwards have a clear jump in quality. There were numerous spelling and grammatical errors, but given that chapter 1 is four years old, and that the author is not a native English speaker (is French) that can be excused and fixed. I was able to submit errors I came across, so the author will be able to fix what i found in a future update. I do recommend that those who play any IF out there to submit anything they find as authors need us to beta test! Their eyes literally begin to glaze over the words theyve seen for the thousandth time lol.
The Ugly: I encountered moments where the MC feels very sensitive and too friendly, or the opposite where the choices can give an extreme negative reaction in response. I'd like for the inclusion of a more middle ground MC. In addition to that, there where times where my immersion (self insert, remember) broke as my boy MC felt too "feminine" without letting us choose to act it or not. Idk how to describe it other than that lol, but it stood out to me.
The Aftermath: I would recommend this to anyone that wants a good family dynamic/drama, and if characters and their relationships with each other are important to you. There's a lot of promise, potential, and "oh shit" moments that can/will happen (18+ tag, remember?) that only leaves me wanting more. The worldbuilding done allows for some really gripping story telling, and from what we see so far, itll impact the story. Seriously, the worldbuilding here is unique, and WILL stand out as we keep seeing the same ole same ole elsewhere in this genre. It's a fantasy story that keeps itself grounded by using likable characters who have realistic flaws that provide entertainment for us.

Heyy dear authoor, I dont know if you are taking question on these but I wanted to ask you about twine and coding. I’ve been interested in writing my own IF but vscode and twee and everything i’ve been reading so far got me super overwhelmed and I tried vscode and everything went red and error with templates I tried to use 😭 I was wondering what is your flow of coding the LAD and how did you started. How is story folders works, how do you structure the files and compile them
Anon... I'm shit at this but I'll try to help as much as I can.
Tbh, I touched a bit of everything before publishing anything. Idk how many games I started on renpy only to abandoned them because I was too lazy to continue and because I dunno how to draw and because I didn't know how to code it in a text only thing. Idk how many IF I started and are still gathering dust in my files and waiting to be rewritten properly, because I wanted to use choicescript at first but didn't understand a single thing lmaooo
I think templates are the most useful for a first IF, especially if you dunno anything about coding etc. I struggled a bit with mine at first (still am sometimes).
You also have to be sure to check if the template was updated for the latest version of twine and if you use the same story formats (SugarCube, Harlowe and... I don't remember the others). Make sure to check in the comments of the template you got too, sometimes some have answers to your potential questions.
My coding flow is a mess so anything I say will probably not help you. I knew some stuff before starting thanks to many attempt at publishing IF, even though I never published any until LAD. We're talking about maybe 2 years of attempts. So in the meantime during those attempts, I've watched some tutorials on ytb for exact stuff I needed, searched on google, on tumblr too (btw check @uroboros-if account, they have a lot of helpful stuff, that's where I found out how to deal with the pronouns, etc. and there's also @outoftheblue-if who knows much more than me (and I used one of their(?) templates! And @manonamora-if definitely will help you better if you got any question about twine!)
I think you should ask or search for the exact things you need. I did that most of the time and gathered it all somewhere in my files. Like, if you wanna know about how to code cycle choices, or how to deal with the pronouns of your ROs, or that kind of thing.
I doubt I've been helpful, but do feel free to head to my discord if you have more question about stuff!

Small Update (and sad news?)
My loveliest lovelies!
First I want to adress the most important news that has already been spreading on Tumblr for the last couple of days:
The shutdown of beloved dashingdon.com
There's been a kind soul or two in my inbox that has informed me of these circumstances, as well as pretty much any IF-blog on here.
I always kind of assumed that would happen, as the alternative site cogdemos.ink has been around longer than I've been working with IFs and I had read about it as dashingdons successor when I first started looking into having a possible game hosted. I've seen people on here being shocked and sad (and weirdly the-end-is-near-y) about it all and I get it. But these things happen frequently as time goes on. In any case I thought the guy on who's shoulders the weight of the whole ChoiceScript-community rests (namely Don) is also hosting this new site.
So, what we'll do is: I upload the game on CogDemos andd change the link on both intro and announcement post (and it absolutely doesn't have anything to do with the fact that I lost the password to my dashingdon account, nuh-nuh, no Sir). I fact, I have already done it (and here's to hoping it works, please report back if anything doesn't work)
With this I will also upload the bits and pieces of the first chapter that have been sitting on my computer since forever, so... New content, yay! (It's not entirely edited though, so a couple of errors in wording and spelling should persist)
I will also use this opportunity and announce the sad news of putting Witch Blood on hiatus for the time being.
Over time I realized that I pretty much bit off more than I could chew, with it being my first actual writing experience. And it's been a lot of fun to learn! But as I've been working more and more on my first fanfiction over the past year I noticed how my approach for Witch Blood was certainly organized in a way but not enough or at least not in a way that works for me. Additionally creating a whole new world is more complicated than I thought because it makes you question everything. I tell myself that I don't have to have all bits and pieces sketched out and logically working, the only thing that matters is what ultimately takes place in the story anyhow. Whatever happens outside of it could be causing more problems than it solves (and God knows I don't want to turn into She-who-must-not-be-named and her whole "I've had this all planned out since the beginning and I am certainly not making this up on the spot because someone asked"-shtick).
But! I am not giving up. I personally still like a lot of things I've come up with. Just the way of going at it isn't working and at this point a re-write is unavoidable.
In other news I recently had a look into Twine, mainly because in a video I saw how great it is to visually represent non-linear storytelling, and it would work really well as just a visual (which I've been looking for since forever) but why not use it for coding as well? There's a couple of helpful things guiding you in contrast to having to do everything from scratch with Choice-Script. I don't think I will be doing any crazy visual effects, since I like the simplicity of CS a lot, but Twine would be interesting to use anyhow.
So, with this absolute monster of a post I also want to thank each and every one of you, who have still stuck around even though there was so much silence on my end! Special shout-out to the lovely Anon asking me if I am okay some time ago!
My inbox will remain open though!
And now, as always
Hugs and kisses
Carter

yk what... i'll publish the choicescript version, too! the twine version will still be published, of course, but most likely at a later date. this is just to make the job easier for me and the coder, and to cater to my audience who has a strong preference for either platform. there won't be any difference in the contents between the versions, just the platform, so you can just stick to one version without the fear of missing out on anything! but since the twine version will be published in later dates due to this new arrangement, it might be more polished in terms of errors in writing as later release means more time to reflect on the written content and the feedback to the choicescript version.
i hope this works out for y'all, too! have a great week ahead, everyone. ♡

We are looking good, friends, for I finally have a playable version of the update on my hands 🥳 Plots? Established. Choices? Laid down. Sass? Locked and loaded.
There are still 2.5 large scenes + editing to do, mind you, but it's always nice to have a single structured piece you can traverse, tweak and add upon. Slow-dripping that sense of accomplishment to keep me going 😅
Now onto the less cheerful side of things. Sadly, my testing setup got obliterated in the meantime by the software changes beyond my control, so I cannot reliably estimate how long beta reading and error/typo fixing will take. Already sweating in anticipation 🤡 I've been growing so frustrated with Twine lately, and it had a substantial effect on the development time. A lot of it is not the engine's fault, but some certainly is. I still enjoy the extended features I get to introduce (like the Secrets or the Codex pop-ups), but now I know that I vastly prefer how you code the scenes with ChoiceScript... Not to mention the out-of-the-box testing and an easy way to estimate how your stats are accumulating. Sigh. It's okay though, I am determined and will not let it defeat me!
Stay tuned!
