Gets a bit repetitive towards the end to the point I was kind of dosing off but didn’t mind the animation and the voice acting was okay. **3.25/5** SWITCH.: ‘Batman: Soul of the Dragon’ was a chance to reinvent an old and potentially interesting character and launch him into its modern canon. However, Warner Bros. has to start taking chances on movies with other heroes in them besides Batman if it wants its lesser-known properties to get some time in the spotlight. – Jake Watt Read Jake’s full article… https://www.maketheswitch.com.au/article/review-batman-soul-of-the-dragon-pushing-the-boundaries-of-batman-fatigue

My kid brother posted this thing on Facebook asking what feels like a cult but isn’t seen as one. There were a lot of your common responses; Scientology, Herbalife, Christianity (which is a cult because all religions are, technically, cults), but my response was Republicans. There is this palpable, disconnected, zeal shared by every Republican in office right now that can only be described as cult like. Even the f*cking moderates are out of their minds and I cannot move past the fact they’ve effectively, as a party, stalled out the entire Government with all the bullsh*t going on in the House right now. It is absolutely staggering to me how inept the Right is, and how those who claim the GOP are just fine with that, as long as the Left doesn’t do anything, too. It’s like their whole platform is just playing spoiler for anything Democrats want and that’s it. That’s the agenda. Never mind doing right by the people. Never mind supporting their constitute. None of that matters in the face of sabotaging anything someone who even slightly looks Left, from trying to get legislation passed. The Republican party has devolved into a cult of dangerously Christian trolls. A friend of mine disagreed. He considers MAGA a cult, but not Republicans as a whole. His reasoning is that there are still “good” Republicans out. I had to sit on that for a while and think about it before responding. I came to the conclusion that we, as a people, conflate Republican and Conservative too freely and that distinction needs to be made in this case.
Now, MAGA is a full-on cult. That’s how Fascism is a thing. They NEED a cult of personality for the dictator to take power. Every Republican in office right now, has hitched their wagon to said would-be-Dictator, in order to drag along their political fortune in his wake. Donald Trump wants to be President for Life and has been saying as much for the last four years, ever since he got booted from office. This man looks up to Strongmen and wants that kind of power. He’s literally said he would be a dictator “for the first day” if re-elected and has basically said he’s immune to prosecution if crimes were committed during his presidency, up to murder or selling State secrets. This is Putin’s game plan. This is Kim-Jong levels of barbarism. This is the sh*t Netenyahu is doing in Israel to both Palestinians AND his own people who dare speak out against him. This is the type of iron clad power Trump wants and you have to be absolutely transfixed by that, in order to advocate for it. These MAGA assholes actively committed treason on this man’s word and attempted an insurrection. If that’s not a cult, I don’t know what is. MAGA is definitely a cult and they are leading the entire Republican party by the nose. Those who speak out, who actively call out what MAGA is even when staunchly denying they are a part of it, are effectively assassinated politically. It happened to Liz Cheney. It’s probably going to happen to Chris Christie. It’s happening in real time to Kevin McCarthy. It would have happened to Mitt Romney if he hadn’t decided to retire. The people who lift their heads out of the sand about this dangerous rhetoric, are targeted and then decapitated by the overwhelming influence MAGA has on the entire Party and that, to me, is why there are no “good” Republicans. They move, lock step, with whatever benefits Trump, not the Nation, and it’s absurd. If you align yourself with this party and do not speak out against its bullsh*t, then you are still part of the problem. It’s not just a MAGA issue, it’s a Republican issue, which is why I make that distinction because there are an absolute f*ck ton of Conservative minded individuals who speak out against this sh*t pretty regularly.
Being a Conservative means living by those values. Taking them to heart but also understanding that life is about growth. You can look back, but understand that we, as a people, are constantly moving forward. You have to have a certain amount of decency to be a Conservative, in my estimation. It’s the difference between BEING a good Christian and performatively “being” a “good Christian.” Something like standing in front of a church for a photo op, while holding the bible upside down or locking your congregation out of your megachurch which used to be a whole ass basketball arena, during one of the worst hurricanes in decades, as opposed to, you know, not doing that stuff. I imagine there has to be some order of tolerance and properly living by those tenants in the bible. You know, love that neighbor, turn the other cheek, all that sh*t. Basically just treat people with respect and tolerance. Know that your values are yours , alone, and shouldn’t be unilaterally forced upon anyone else. There is merit in looking back to a simpler time. I wholeheartedly believe it is necessary for Conservatives to exists out in the wild as their nostalgic often tempers the rush most Progressives have toward the future. They need each other to find a genuinely comfortable pace for our evolution as a society. Without that counterbalance, Progressives would have us run right off a cliff in the name of progress. We need both to be reasonable and dynamic in the human experience. Just to be crystal clear, everything I said pertains to the international political scale, not the one here in the US and that’s the problem.
Everything here in the States has shifted sharply to the Right. It feels like, since Kennedy’s head got Pollock’d, everything has just been out of step with the rest of the world. People like Biden and Obama would be considered Republican, firmly on the Right, anywhere else in the world but here? Here in the US where being progressive and just generally a decent human being is frowned upon, those cats are touted as true Liberals. People like AOC and The Squad would be considered moderate Progressives anywhere else but, according to their absolutely cartoonish adversaries across the aisle, they are “Radical” and “communists”. There is a difference between wanting Democratic Socialism and being a straight up Commie. It’s in that lack of nuance where so much miscommunication has bred. That mire of ideologues and ideology is why there are so many problems here. When you stand by and let a crazy person with a bad tan basically tell you he’s running to be El Presidente for Life, as a means to avoid doing time for felonies he openly admits to committing, who has preached retribution for anyone who has opposed him since being kicked out of the big chair, how can you not be in a cult? How can you not have drank that Kool-Aid? Even tacitly endorsing this f*ckery gives it life. Passing the buck in terms of accountability, Mitch McConnell, is siding with a history rife with violence and bloodshed. The Republican party is a cult in everything but name and they got there by allowing the actual zealots to take over.

'Christopher Nolan originally wanted to film parts of Oppenheimer at the real Trinity test location, and a new book reveals why he had to abandon these plans. Based on American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, Nolan's historical drama hit theaters this past July, earning rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. The filmmaker is now renowned for his desire to make his movies feel as real as possible, and this apparently included attempting to film Oppenheimer's Trinity test sequence at the site of the real atomic detonation in New Mexico.
According to Unleashing Oppenheimer: Inside Christopher Nolan's Explosive Atomic-Age Thriller by Jada Yuan (via Slash Film), which breaks down the Oppenheimer ending and all other elements of the film, real military weapons testing prevented Nolan from filming at the White Sands Proving Ground. As recalled by production designer Ruth De Jong, Nolan and members of the production took a trip to the site and got surprisingly far along in planning their shoot days there. Check out De Jong's recollection of events below:
"That was wild, being out at Trinity. Chris and I were taken directly to the place where the bomb was dropped. We walked in and picked up trinitite. I was like, 'How much radiation am I being exposed to?' Our guide was like, 'You get more radiation flying in an airplane back and forth to L.A. than you do standing here.'
"Chris was like, 'Hey, wouldn't it be great if we could just shoot here?' And then when we actually started to figure out the schedule, we realized that we couldn't shoot there because they were dropping bombs during the time we needed to prep and shoot."
Why Oppenheimer's Trinity Sequence Was So Effective
Early marketing for Oppenheimer teased the historical drama as being somewhat non-traditional, with trailers hyping the film's intensity with an almost horror-movie-like sense of dread. While parts of Nolan's film certainly do adhere to the more traditional biographical drama structure and presentation, the Trinity test sequence in the film proves that the trailers were right to tease the movie as a thriller-esque experience.
In a horror movie, the anticipation and build-up of the scare is just as important as the scare itself. Even though audiences know that the Trinity test, the first ever detonation of a nuclear weapon, didn't result in the annihilation of all life on Earth, the figures involved feared that this was a real possibility. This fear of potentially destroying the world, which is memorably laid out through dialogue by Matt Damon's General Leslie Groves in the film, is further compounded by anxiety and excitement regarding how the introduction of this kind of power could alter human history.
After a tense build up with some effective Nolan cross-cutting, Oppenheimer's nuclear blast is rendered on screen, and it's brought to life without the use of CGI. The layering of practical elements using VFX gives the explosion a truly terrifying, visceral quality. Of course, while the Trinity test itself is one of Oppenheimer's most memorable sequences, the victory speech scene after the bomb is actually used on Japan serves as the perfect conclusion to this section of the film, with Cillian Murphy's lead character grappling with the guilt of his creation.'

Lees verder in Deel 2.

‘Good evening gentlemen,‘ a female voice calls from behind the bar, ‘you must be here for Robert and Mark. They’re outside. I’ll be right there to take your order.‘ Chris can’t help but stare for a second. Who is this woman and why has he never seen her before? She looks beautiful. Golden waves brush her shoulders, heart shaped lips painted red, rosy cheeks, and bright blue eyes. While Tom is already standing on the doorstep to outside, Chris hesitates. ‘Chris, are you coming?’
‘Oh, yeah, of course,‘ Chris stutters and tries to pretend he wasn’t staring at the bartender just a second ago. The two venture outside to find a deck atop the green sea in front of them. It could seat a pretty big party if you squeezed, but by the way the seating spaces are spread on the deck you can tell that that’s not what they’re going for. It’s cozy, with string lights everywhere, candles on the tables, celebrities littered throughout the place looking completely at rest. Some are with others chatting away, others are reading, some are simply enjoying the music playing through the outside speakers. ‘Ah, you found it,‘ Robert calls over to the two men walking. They gain a few looks, a few greetings, and walk over to Robert and Mark where they sit down. ‘Welcome to The Dutchess’ Garden,‘ Mark says, raising his glass to the two. Chris looks confused at the shape glas. It stands on a leg like a wine glass, but has an hourglass kind of shape, with the upper part cut in half so that the top bit is wider than the bottom. On the table is a bottle in a wine cooler filled with ice water, but it doesn’t look like it’s wine. ‘So what is this place,‘ Tom asks as both of them take a seat. He doesn’t seem as confused about the glass. ‘It’s a kind of secret bar for celebrities who don’t always want cameras in their face,‘ Mark tells them, ‘Robert took me here the first time we filmed something from Marvel together.‘ ‘And how did you find it,‘ Tom asks Robert.  ‘Robert helped my father find a place to start it,‘ a female voice says and the group sees the bartender from before stand at their table. ‘Gentlemen, meet Emma Meijers,‘ Robert introduces, ‘her dad and I go way back. He helped me out when I was stuck in the Netherlands once and we kept in touch. Anyway, she runs the place now.‘ Chris looks her up and down with starts in his eyes. Emma is not your typical skinny model. She has an hourglass figure with a little more sand that is perfectly accentuated by the copper wrap dress that she wears. Though the dress conveys a mature look, her kiwi socks and white sneakers don’t. They mix the playful with the mature to come out with a sort of teasing image. She has her ears pierced in multiple places and wears golden rings and dangling earrings in them. Around her neck are two different golden necklaces. One a simple chain, the other a chain with a coin hanging from it. She wears a brown hair tie around her wrist and has chipped, red nailpolish. Chris is mesmerized, but that doesn’t mean the others don’t stare. ‘Thank you for the introduction Robert,‘ Emma smiles, ‘I hope you have told your guests about the secrecy of The Dutchess.‘ ‘I have not,‘ Robert turns back to us, ‘The Dutchess is a secret bar like Mark said, but she also asks for her guests to keep the secret. Not all celebrities know about her and she tries to keep her clientele the right crowd by being a members only and invite only bar. So no telling others until The Dutchess decides you can be a member.‘ Emma nods with a smile. ‘Now that we have that out of the way,‘ she says, ‘Mark and Robert are enjoying some jonge jenever, but I can get you anything else. We have several different types of Dutch and Belgian beers, we have gin though I would suggest trying the jenever over gin, and we also have some different kinds of whiskey.‘ She looks at Chris with a wink. ‘Of course we also have ice if you need ot water it down.‘ A laugh erupts from the group. ‘Emma, I think they’ll like the jenever. Can you get us two more glasses and another bottle of water?‘ ‘Of course Robert, I’ll be right back.‘ ‘She’s a feisty one,‘ Chris huffs, crossing his arms in front of his chest. ‘Come on Chris, you can’t seriously tell me a pretty girl made you sulk because she called you a pussy for drinking whiskey on the rocks,‘ Robert laughs. Chris sighs, but Tom is already in the next topic. ‘So it’s The Dutchess is spelled with a T because they’re Dutch? That’s such a fun play on words,‘ he comments, ‘but how do they keep their staff quiet?‘ ‘From what she told me,‘ Robert explains, ‘they ask the staff to sign a contract that requires them to keep The Dutchess secret. Otherwise they get fired and are sued.‘ ‘So they’d never hire you,‘ Chris jokes, trying to take the attention away from him more. But it backfires as Emma reappears with the glasses and the water. ‘But I wouldn’t hire you either,‘ she says, ‘you’re too big and I doubt anyone other than Chivas would want a superhero that drinks whiskey on the rocks.‘ ‘Is this how it’s going to be tonight,‘ Chris asks, trying to sound jokingly. ‘I mean, I could start asking why you consider jellybeans a food or ask you if you can drive,‘ she jabs at him. ‘How do you know all this stuff?‘ ‘Dutchess secret,‘ she teases with a wink as she puts down the glasses. ‘Don’t sell yourself short Emma,‘ Mark smiles, ‘she’s a great hostess and because you can’t get in here without giving a name, she researches people before they come here so they get the best service.‘ ‘And she shames everyone who drinks whiskey on the rocks,‘ Robert adds, ‘she did the same thing when we brought Hiddleston here. He drinks Jameson on the rocks.‘ ‘You’re not supposed to drink whiskey on the rocks,‘ she says in her own defense, ‘it’s a pure product. You should drink it pure. Or if it’s just a temperature thing, you could ask for a cold glass, but-‘ ‘You’re rambling darling,‘ Robert says with a smile. She tucks some hair behind her ear with a small blush forming on her cheeks. ‘So sorry about that,‘ she says, ‘but to ramble on a little longer for our newcomers. The drink you have in font of you is jonge jenever. It’s the drink gin was based of off and it is far superior. I don’t just say this because I am Dutch and it is a Dutch drink. It’s genuinely better. You’re supposed to fill your glass to the brim and drink it cold and pure. Enjoy.‘ She walks off, walking past a few other tables to have a chat and a laugh. Chris watches her go around. ‘She knows a lot about all that,‘ Tom says as Robert pours all of them a glass of jenever. ‘She studied it,‘ Robert tells them, ‘she knows a lot. Wine is her area of expertise. She is not really a sommelier, but she was studying it before she had to take over here.‘ ‘Take over?‘ Tom looks a bit concerned at the word choice Robert had made. It would imply something bad happened. 'We shouldn’t gossip about Emma,’ Mark says, ‘she took over for her dad. That’s all.‘ Chris nods agreeing, but he wants to know more. Not like this though. He wants to hear her tell it. In fact, he wants her to tell him anything. Her voice is wonderful to listen to. Even when she makes fun of him.
‘I hate to be a buzzkill, but I’m doing the last round,‘ Emma says with a kind smile, ‘I don’t mind staying open a little longer, but I do have to move you guys inside if you want to stay.‘ The four men look at her like she spoke gibberish and only now realize that they’re the only ones left. ‘That’s alright Emma, I think Mark and I will be leaving,‘ Robert says and turns to Tom, ‘Tom, do you need a ride into town?‘ ‘Yes, that’d be great.‘ ‘Good, Emma, would you be a doll and tell Marcus we’re ready to leave?‘ ‘Of course,‘ she says and scurries back inside to warn the driver who had been sitting inside the whole evening. Emma had offered him a book of hers when he finished his, which she did more often when drivers had to stay for a long time. ‘Your driver has been here the whole time,‘ Tom asks in amazement. ‘Yes, Emma takes great care of him,‘ Robert tells him, ‘makes him virgin cocktails and coffee or a meal if they want.‘ ‘She really is a great hostess,‘ Mark adds as he gathers his stuff. Marcus walks outside to alert the men that he’s ready to get them home. ‘You’ll be fine, right Chris?‘ ‘Oh yeah, don’t worry about me.‘ The group says goodbye and Chris is left alone, outside, enjoying the view and the quietly played music. Emma walks outside with a beer bottle in hand. She sits down next to Chris to enjoy the view with him. ‘I’m sorry, did you want me out,‘ he asks Emma a bit shocked. ‘No, it’s fine,‘ she says, ‘I’m done inside, so I thought I’d join you for a drink. If you don’t mind, of course.‘ ‘I enjoy the company,‘ he says with a smile. She watches his face with a smile. There’s a slight drunk blush on his cheeks, but nothing too bad. She saw he had drank the least out of all of them, drinking more water to keep himself grounded. ‘Can I pour you another one or are you good?‘ ‘If you’re not going to shame me, I’d like a whiskey on the rocks.‘ She chuckles. ‘What kind?‘ ‘Surprise me.‘ ‘That’s not a kind of whiskey,‘ she teases, but she’s off before he can jab back at her. He watches her walk away. She is truely stunning. He wonders how a business like this keeps existing, but they probably ask more for drinks or something. ‘I played it safe,‘ she says as she hands him a glass, ‘it’s Chivas.‘ He smiles and absentmindedly puts an arm over the back of the bench they’re sitting on, almost brushing her shoulder with his hand. ‘Wow, you’ve been liberal with the ice,‘ he jokes. ‘Whiskey on the rock,‘ she laughs, ‘if you want more, there’s an ice machine behind the bar.‘ ‘You’re just going to let me behind the bar,‘ he smiles a bit confused. ‘I’m off duty. Making you that drink was me being friendly. You gotta get your own stuff now,‘ she teases. He laughs and as the evening gets later, the two get more familiar with each other. But all nights must come to and end and so does this one. Emma lets Chris out the front door and throws him another sweet smile. He starts walking away, but she calls after him. He stops and turns around to find her running after him. She hands him a piece of paper. ‘Just so you know,‘ she smiles shyly, ‘you’re always welcome here. Would be a shame to refuse someone living this closeby.‘ She runs back inside and he watches her. When the door closes he checks the piece of paper he got. It’s a flyer with the opening times of The Dutchess’ Garden, as well as a form to sign up to be a member.

The End Is Nigh: A Conversation With OFFICIUM TRISTE Frontman Pim Blankenstein
~By Shawn Gibson~
Tumblr media
I was first introduced to OFFICIUM TRISTE when Mors Viri came out in 2013 and I have been a fan ever since! At the time, I had a radio show and got an email from HammerHeart Records with promo and played some songs off of that album.
The Dutch band's music has also pushed me through tough times, mentally and emotionally. There is sadness in their songs, as there is great beauty. Each song has its own dynamic sound with piano, organs, violins, cellos, etc. Officium Triste's albums are heavy as mountains, but have parts within that soar like eagles!
Recently, I had the privilege of longtime singer Pim Blankenstein, who has been with the band since 1994.
Mors Viri by Officium Triste
Officium Triste has been making music since 1994! How does that feel to be with this band now and the current state of affairs?
It feels as exciting as it was when we started out. Of course, a lot has changed in 25 years, but for us as a band our values are still the same. We love slow, heavy and melodic music and we still write this kind of music. Over the years we of course have grown as a band and you keep learning. After the last couple of line-up changes I totally feel this is the best line-up we've had. We're all on the same page and actually things couldn't be better.
What does the name Officium Triste mean?
If you put it in Google translate, it says it means the baleful. Back when we started out our then guitarist Johan Kwakernaak came up with the name, which he got from a Latin dictionary. The combination of words means something like a "sad gathering," such as a funeral.
You are from the Netherlands right? What are some other bands from the Netherlands you guys love?
Yeah, we are from the Netherlands and when we started out there were quite some doom bands we dug like early The Gathering, Celestial Season, Castle or Beyond Belief. Having said that, the doom scene never was that big but we always had killer bands. Just think of Deinonychus or newer acts like Facade, Treurwilg or Beyond Our Ruins.
In other genres we have (and had) great bands, too. Death metal was especially huge. Pestilence, Pentacle, Asphyx, Sinister, Thanatos, Severe Torture, Bodyfarm, Gorefest. I could go on and on. Bottomline is that the Dutch scene always has been and still is great. We know quite a lot of bands personally and we get along real fine.
We are all Doomed! Are you Stoned?
Nope. Used to smoke a lot. Not anymore though. But that doesn't change the fact we indeed are doomed!
The Death of Gaia (Atmospheric Death/Doom Metal) by OFFICIUM TRISTE (Netherlands)
Your latest album 'The Death Of Gaia' came out December 13 2019. What has influenced the writing of this album?
As far as the music is concerned, our core values are still present, which is writing slow, heavy, melodic and melancholic music. I like to say we are still inspired by the bands that showed us the way in the '90s, like Paradise Lost, Anathema, Katatonia or Type O Negative. Along the way, also a band such as Shape Of Despair inspired a bit but also film scores, shoegaze or dream pop.
Lyrics are about subjects such as the decline of our planet, loneliness, insomnia, guilt, and stuff like that -- basically what is happening around us. So the reality of life inspired us in that department.
Throughout the years of your albums there is always great range and depth of song with varied instruments. Are there any instruments you haven't used yet, but would love to include in a song?
From a personal perspective, I'd like to include some percussive elements. I can totally imagine us using some proper timpani for that ultimate heavy sound.
Who did the artwork for 'The Death Of Gaia'?
When we figured out we wanted something different as artwork on this album and moved away from our earlier art, we got in touch with Chris Smith of Grey Aria Design from the US. We liked what he had done for Solstice from the UK and we really wanted that Art Nouveau-type art. Chris totally delivered what we were after.
Tumblr media
Art by Chris Smith/Grey Aria Design
What makes you guys laugh?
We actually laugh a lot. We get along really well and joke around a lot making fun of each other. Other than that we are totally into dark, sarcastic humour. Or stand-up comedians like Steve Hughes of Jim Jefferies. Writers like Bukowski or Brusselmans (a Belgian writer). Ren & Stimpy, Pinky & The Brain, Invader Zim. There's plenty of stuff that makes us laugh.
What has been an awkward moment for Officium Triste?
Probably being too drunk on stage in our early years could be considered as awkward. Other than that, not much. Maybe some awkward moments on behalf of our previous bass player, but I won't get into details on that because it's better to let that rest.
You have a long history of making death doom and are in the same boat as other established bands such as My Dying Bride, Katatonia, Paradise Lost. What is in the future for Officium Triste? Will there be another 25 years?
Well, we take it as it is. Our current label Transcending Obscurity is quite happy with us it seems and has been asking if we want to do another album for them. We are gathering new song ideas as we speak, so you can expect another album in the future. Not sure if we'll last another 25 years, as we will be considered as elderly people by then. As long as we're having fun we keep doing what we like to do.
Who is in the band Officium Triste and what do they do in the band?
Right now it is the founding members Martin Kwakernaak on keyboards. He used to be our drummer, too. Gerard de Jong on lead guitars and I (Pim Blankenstein) on vocals. We have Niels Jordaan on drums, William van Dijk on rhythm guitars and Theo Plaisier on bass.
With the varied sounds in your music do you have several session players to record? Sometimes it sounds like you have a symphony accompanying your music!
Actually, this time around we used some session musicians. We decided to record some real string instruments, as opposed to using the sounds from the keyboard, so we asked Chris Davies to record violins. We knew Chris from Eye Of Solitude where he used to play bass and he played violins with Clouds, in which I am involved, too, in a way. He did a great job. On cello we asked Eliane Anemaat. She is quite known for her work with bands, such as Celestial Season, Mayan or Delain. She also did an outstanding job.
What are some bands from the beginning that have influenced Officium Triste? Who are some current bands that catch your attention?
I more or less mentioned some bands in an earlier answer, but we initially were heavily influenced by Paradise Lost, Anathema, Celestial Season, My Dying Bride, Katatonia, and Type O Negative. But also Metallica, Edge Of Sanity, Dismember or Winter influenced us to some extent. Later on, also bands such as Evoken, Mournful Congregation or Shape Of Despair impressed us. Currently, there's not a lot of bands that caught our attention and actually had an impact on us, but we do like bands that mix things up like what In Solitude, Tribulation, Alcest or Chapel Of Disease are doing, to name just a couple.
Film by Buzau Live Music
Beyond doom and death, what other music styles do you like and listen to?
We listen to quite a lot of varied stuff. Like heavy metal, classic rock, shoegaze, indie rock, new wave, movie scores, retro wave. As long as it is good music we listen to it.
Will you ever tour in the states?
Hopefully. If we ever get a proper invitation and stuff is sorted out, well we definitely would like to come. We are crossing the Atlantic in a couple of months to play a one-off in Mexico.
For me, I have felt positive things from the lyrics and the heavy music amidst the doom. I guess its nice to be able to relate to songs and feel the music with your soul. The balance of heavy and almost symphonic and atmospheric music still blows my mind! Officium Triste is one of very few with clean vocals accompanying death growls I love. Most clean vocals fuck me up.
Cheers for that!
"Burning all Boats and Bridges" is my jam! Fuck it all and starting clean! My life has to take another turn! A fresh start is what I yearn for! Please tell me a little about this song.
Actually, this song is basically the only one where we could use music provided by our previous bass player. But since he fucked things up I have a hard time listening to this particular track. I did write the lyrics, though, and I usually start with a song title. I'm not sure where I got it from, but the lyrics are about having a fresh start and cut all ties with your past. It's not something that happened to any of us personally. But I guess everyone can relate to the subject, so I wrote lyrics about this.
"The End Is Nigh." Do you think this song is relevant to current world events?
That's what inspired it. But to be honest, this world has been a shithole for centuries. So, when I wrote the lyrics I did think about the current state of affairs, as well as stuff from the past. I think everyone can decide for themselves what we talk about, whether it is politics, the environment or overpopulation. It all goes hand in hand, in a way. For the lyrics, I took the Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse as a metaphor. And the second song on the album World In Flames continues with the subject.
Pim, thank you very much for your time! It is a pleasure and an honor!
Thank you, Shawn, for the interview. Much appreciated. Hope your readers will check us out if they haven't done so yet.

Suicide and Mental Health Issues Within the Music Industry
With a lot of recent deaths because of suicide among musicians in the past few years, mental health in the music industry has been a major talking point, with a lot of artists being open about their mental health and also advocating it at the same time. Efforts to accommodate musicians’ mental health have also risen in recent times.
Tumblr media
Suicide rates among musicians have been rising at a notable rate for the past few years, with the deaths of artists such as Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell, rapper Lil Peep, and DJ Avicii breaking the news outlets for the past few years. Even the notoriously harsh environment of the Korean music industry takes its toll for the past couple of years, from SHINee’s Jonghyun who passed away at the end of 2017 to f(x)’s Sulli and Kara’s Goo Hara, who both passed away earlier this year. A number of factors play a significant role on these artists’ turbulent mental health, leading to suicide; however, these deaths cannot be precisely concluded since some of the behaviors allegedly causing their declining mental health are just merely rumors and speculations, although the speculations and rumours may eventually be accurate. These factors range from the harsh demands from the music industry that musicians are unable to fulfill, underwhelmingly lacking amount of appreciation for their talents, an unhealthy lifestyle involving drug usage and alcohol consumption, and in a few cases around the Korean music industry, extreme verbal abuse from fans in forms of bullying and even death threats, and major agencies’ inability to protect their artists from abuse and also at the same their inability to give safe and guaranteed privacy to these musical idols.
Tumblr media
The matter regarding mental health among musicians proved to be a serious matter. A study conducted by Record Union, a Sweden-based digital distribution platform, found out that approximately around 73 percent of independent musicians, especially at the age between 18 to 25 years old, have been suffering from various mental illnesses including anxiety and depression; this is a survey of 1,500 musicians between March 21 and April 2 earlier this year, as quoted by Billboard and Consequence of Sound. The numbers do not stop there, as 33 percent of those surveyed had panic attacks, while 57 percent of them said that they are worried about their well-being and mental health as well and 41 percent of them said that they are worried about those issues at least multiple times a day. And sadly, only 39 percent of the group have mentioned that they had been seeking treatments for their mental health, and 51 percent from the same group of people have mentioned that they received medications, especially people who had alcohol and drug-related issues.
Tumblr media
In regards to the Korean music industry, the environment on the industry itself has been notorious for its harsh work ethics, unrealistically high demands from both the fans and the agency alike, and not to mention the brutal anonymous Korean social media users who have virtually abused their idols with various reasons, mainly not conforming with the Korean idols’ standards and not being able to fulfill fans’ demands and expectations that mostly expect nothing less than perfection from their idols. As the result of these factors, Korean netizens (also rather known as K-Netz) brutally attacked their idols, from their physical appearances to their personal lives with harsh comments and threats anonymously through social media. The agencies, who are responsible for these idols’ management, have been generally unresponsive when it comes to handling this kind of issues also, creating a bad look for the industry regarding its handling of their assets’ mental health.
Tumblr media
A few attempts have been made to become open regarding musicians’ mental health awareness to the fans, with a lot of artists starting to advocate and opening up about their mental health. Examples include artists such as Halsey, Khalid, Logic and other artists talking about their mental health struggles and its prevention through a campaign called “I’m Listening” back in September of 2017. Passion Pit frontman Michael Angelakos created an organization called “The WishArt Group”, as quoted by output.com, which functions to “create and house nonprofit and for-profit services and programs and build programs for musicians to develop solutions for communities in need, such as donating intellectual property and revenue streams to institutions”. Angelakos’ nonprofit organization provided these kinds of assistance with the hopes of helping musicians to speak up as well as encouraging other musicians through this organization, indirectly preventing mental health issues caused by the cruel demands of the music industry. Besides advocating for mental health awareness, rapper Logic, alongside singer Khalid and also Alessia Cara, released a song related to suicide prevention, titled “1-800-273-8255”, in which the title was inspired from the hotline number of United States’ National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The song was a success commercially and is critically acclaimed among the likes of music critics and fans. The success of the song also positively affected the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, with an approximate increase of 50 percent in calls received after the song was released, according to Lifeline’s Director of Communications, Frances Gonzalez. As for the Korean music industry, a few artists have spoken up about mental health and also suicide awareness since the news of Jonghyun’s suicide back in 2017 broke out, although both of the topics are considered to be taboo among Korean people. The “Shining Road” concert series, hosted by veteran singer and actor Lee Dong Wook, was created back in 2018 and was held from April 23 to May 7 at that year, which was joined some of the prominent Korean singers and actors, including Lee Seung Chul, Girls’ Generation’s Sooyoung, Kangta, singer-songwriter Yoon Jong Shin, and several other artists from the industry. The concert series, that was going to begin in the South Korea’s capital of Seoul, was held with the hopes to raise awareness regarding suicide prevention, which eventually at the time became one of the latest instances of South Korean entertainers partaking in the topics of psychological disorders and treatment, which became the country’s talking point. The “Shining Road” concert series eventually paved a way for artists in the Korean music industry to open up regarding mental health and suicide prevention until now.
Tumblr media
To conclude this article, it can be said that musicians are also humans like us, who has struggles although we cannot see them behind all the success and fame they received as musical artists. The harsh environment of the music industry can be really toxic for the musicians and it can affect their mental health in a negative way, and the lack of support from the label or even the fans might affect their mental health even worse. One of the ways to prevent this kind of issue from happening is to give these musicians an appreciation. The appreciation can be done in different ways, from buying their music materials or attending their concerts or gigs might be enough to help them. And if you may have relatives or friends who are struggling with mental health, or it might be even yourself who are struggling with mental health, try to seek professional help or call your local suicide prevention hotline.

TDB Rewatch  Puppet Master  Episode  5x07
“Looks like somebody’s man-struating.”   “I heard that.”
To quote the guests on the TDB podcast: “Who wrote this?”  -  “Tina!”  or, as Kurt puppet confirmed in a BTS video “a writer, who clearly had been drinking...”.
While the NYC-arc is great, this in one of the s5 episodes that mostly doesn’t make sense at all, is over the top crazy and doesn’t really help driving the Lima narrative towards nationals and graduation and I would gladly trade all the Sue scenes for more of Kurt and NYC. BUT as an exception I will turn a blind eye to this fact because I absolutely love Blaine with the puppets. His attempt in trying to fight the anarchy in the choir room by installing a dictatorship is not very effective. I love everyone’s reactions to his self-centered suggestions from eyerolling or head-smashing to Sam’s utterly shocked expression. It’s obvious that this is not the first time Blaine showed his inner puppet master and acted all Rachel-Berry-2.0 on them. It’s funny that Jake is the only one who actively tries to support him and only gets glares for it. I don’t know which one I love more - sassy Blaine or passive-aggressively sulking Blaine, lol.
Tumblr media
Does Kurt actually expect Blaine to skip school again?! He already missed several school days for his NYADA audition, and isn’t he supposed to have finals and everything.... so maybe he should focus on that? Blaine is accepting Kurt’s request before he even knows that the gig will NOT be on a weekend. They are both so wrapped up in their own personal drama/enthusiasm that they don’t actually listen to the other... which continues when Blaine talks to Brad, the piano player.
Tumblr media
Everything about the puppets is hilarious, totally gas-induced crazy, and it’s obvious that the actors had a blast with their respective puppets. I love Blaine’s version of You are my Best Friend and how surprised and pleased and happy he is about all the praise and love he gets from his puppet friends!! Kurt and Kurt puppet have some really funny background moments during the Fox song (which I love, btw) and I love all the little adorable details every puppet has as a nod to the character they represent  - from Marley’s hat to the hippo brooch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kurt on the NYC side is almost a similar kind of puppet master as Blaine is, but he is not making everything about himself. It’s not so much about putting oneself front and center than being a leader who has to make decisions and the people involved having to find the strength to follow these decisions, even though the result isn’t always obvious from the beginning. I love Elliot in both band meetings where he’s always very respectful even if he disagrees, and truely supportive of Kurt and trusting his instincts (despite his own reservations). Kurt’s fantasy of Into the Groove is awesome and all the hip-twirling almost distracts me from how great Kurt sounds here. (the fun thing is that I can never not notice how much trouble Chris has to not lose the beat when he’s improvising his moves, lol)
Tumblr media
Kurt-Blaine Things:
“Mr Schue asked for ideas for nationals, and when I gave some genius ones, everyone got all mad and started dissing me.”
“Geez, you scared the crap out of me. Warn me before you talk!”
“This week’s lesson is all about the most inspiring guy we know: Blaine!”
Arts and Crafts is Blaine’s senior elective.
Blaine reaching out desperately for “Kurt Puppet!” and Kurt puppet mysteriously lifting its head to glare at Sue.
“I miss having a Kurt puppet, though. He did anything I said.” ^^
Finally Blaine adresses the vaporub incident and it seems that he’s secretly pleased about Tina’s admiration and attention.
I would like to see that secret bootleg their only guest made at Callbacks..
Other Things:
“It feels like North Korea up in here... Blaine Jong-il.”
Sue has a point. Women are often not taken seriously just because they’re women, regardless of their skills or intelligence.
“Unique’s got the blues! And the only way to cure 'em is to hear Blaine’s smooth-as-a-baby’s-butt voice.”
I don’t care for the Jake-Bree drama and his song but I always love me some Jake Artist moves. Fun fact: the Blaine in Jake’s fantasy is really pleased about what he sees, lol.
“Why on earth would an 18-year-old man want to make a puppet?”
“If I catch you with your hand up the butt of anything that isn’t human you’re in a world of trouble.”  --  all the butt jokes *insert eyeroll gif*
the shooting must have been very chaotic with all these puppet players in a very cramped space.
Detention aka the ‘Beck-fast-Club’.   Wait... they have got 8 hours detention starting from 4pm ?!? until midnight? WTF?! Is detention actually still a thing that is used in US schools as a corrective method??
@todaydreambelievers
“I might not agree with all of his decisions, but he is our leader and he’s an artist and artists should be allowed to fail.”

Football RPF Challenge - Day 6: A Night Out With Friends
NGL friends, I almost didn’t do this one.
For starters, I spent all day in a place where I couldn’t really focus on anything for a variety of reasons, so the idea of sitting down and writing anything seemed almost impossible. Second, I didn’t really have a solid idea for a scene to work on for this prompt in my head, which meant that I didn’t have a plan, and I absolutely cannot write without some kind of plan. I realise the point of what I’m trying to do here with these exercises is to just write and not care about it, and I used to be able to do that, but I think I’ve evolved as a writer to a place where that’s just not who I am anymore (for better or worse, I suppose). So then it got to a point of me thinking about how to start and realising that if I didn’t know where the scene was supposed to end or who was involved or why they were all out, I’d just spend a lot of time writing a really boring conversation that wouldn’t get anyone anywhere.
The thing of today’s prompt, also, is that it encapsulates some of the things I’m the WORST at: ensemble conversation, ambiance, scene and sensory cues, probably food. So you get this combination of distracted, no plan, and things I’m bad at and I honestly took the bit of writing time I did have and said you know what, no. I don’t feel like doing today’s challenge and I don’t have an idea for it anyway so I just won’t do it, because this is a hobby and it’s supposed to be fun and no one is making me do this but me.
BUT! I also recognised that BECAUSE this is hard and BECAUSE I don’t want to and BECAUSE I don’t know how to do it, that is precisely why I *needed* to do it. Because I’m not a quitter. Or, maybe, because once I let myself quit one time, it becomes infinitely harder to NOT let myself quit the next time, or the time after that, or the time after that.
For my whole life, I’ve gotten to where I am by saying “if something seems hard, that’s precisely the time you need to do it the most”
This may seem harsh and it’s certainly not advice I’d recommend for everyone, but it’s the way I’ve always done things. Because at least, even if it didn’t go well or it WAS hard or whatever...I TRIED, and I’d always have that. It’s hard to explain, I guess.
Anyway, what got me over the hump of having decided I was just going to not do it was saying to Jonas “I feel like all of a sudden I’m a person who gives myself permission to say ‘that’s too hard’, and I don’t know if that’s the person I want to be, because I’ve never been that person before so do I want to start now?”
And I realised, I didn’t. Because my stubborn willingness to WORK HARDER WHEN THE WORK GETS HARDER is the one thing I’ve always been proud of.
Like...this is a CHALLENGE. It’s supposed to be CHALLENGING. And if on day 6 I say “eh, I don’t feel like it” then what’s going to force me to rise to the occasion on day 7 or 10 or 18 or 29? NOTHING.
(and really, the scene I ended up writing is from a fic inspired by a song that expresses the exact sentiment I needed...”If we don’t do this today/ there goes a day/ another moment that could have been ours/ figure it out/ that’s what I do...”)
So I made myself do it. And, friends, it turned out pretty well.
The continuation of the restaurant scene from days 2 and 3 (presuming I have fixed the ending from day 3 and Christian is actually AT the restaurant when Vincent arrives). It’s not the full scene, but I took an hour and a quarter and put together 1100 words. And most importantly...I DID NOT GIVE UP.
"Christian," Vincent said, sliding into the empty chair to Christian's right--the only empty seat at the table, of course, because what other kind of luck would Vincent had.
He wanted to say that if he'd known Christian would be here he would have begged off in favour of spending a night in his hotel catching up from the whirlwind of the day and trying to figure out where he was supposed to be tomorrow and when and exactly how everything was supposed to work, but he honestly couldn't convince himself that was true.
Sure, it was what he <em>should</em> have done, but if he'd spent his life doing what he should do he never would have let himself develop this big of a celebrity crush on an Ajax player in the first place.
Blue green eyes flicked upward to meet his for the briefest of moments before Christian turned back towards his friends. The three of them had all crowded around the far side of their small table. It was clearly meant for four, but the others had all wedged themselves in, Jan in the centre directly across from Christian, with Mousa to his right and Toby to his left.
Jan returned Christian's look with a wide grin.
"Oh, Chris, Did I forget to mention that we invited Vincent to join us? We thought since he'd just arrived in town this morning we'd take him out and save him from an evening of sitting around a hotel room." With that, he turned to Vincent. "Welcome, Vincent. I'm glad you could make it."
He spoke in Dutch, Pochettino's rules about everyone speaking English evidently not extending off the training ground. Either that, or he was doing it for Vincent's benefit, which Vincent honestly appreciated. He knew English, of course, but he had a feeling that getting through an entire dinner while pressed up between a pillar to his right and Christian Eriksen to his left was going to be difficult enough without trying to figure out how to express himself in a second language.
"Yes," Vincent said, settling down into his seat a bit. "As I said, it was a bit confusing, and there was quite a lot of traffic, but, I made it."
Beside him, Christian made a sort of low snorting noise. "It's a Tuesday in mid-July. If you think that was quite a bit of traffic just wait until Friday night when everyone's back from their holidays."
Toby shook his head and gave Christian an eyeroll. "We all know, Christiaan. If you had your way you'd never leave your house again. I swear, if he could, this one would still cycle to training like we did back in Amsterdam."
"He'd have to move if he wanted to do that," Mousa said, and the others laughed.
"Flikker op," Christian said, flashing them a rude gesture. "The lot of you."
Vincent looked around the table at his new teammates, all of them leaned back and relaxed and so casual around one another, save Christian who was perched at the edge of his seat, leaning to his left and slightly away from Vincent. He seemed a bit on edge, but considering Vincent had spoken to him for five minutes who was he to say. That might just be Christian's mannerism.
Or, he thought. Five minutes of awkward conversation where you held his hand and gazed into his eyes was enough to put him off the entire idea of getting any closer to you than he should. Not that Vincent could blame Christian for that. It hadn't exactly been an auspicious first meeting.
Nothing for it, though, he supposed. What was done was done, and all he could do now was get his mind and body under control and show up for work like the professional he was. This wasn't some starry-eyed kid from Jong Feyenoord out to dinner with the rockstars of the Eredivisie, this was Tottenham Hotspur's newest summer signing out on the town with his teammates.
"Where...do you all live?" Vincent asked. "It's not that I mean to pry it's just...well, I'll have to find a flat or something sooner or later, right. I can't live in a hotel forever. So..."
"Ahh," Jan said. "Recommendations. Yes. It depends on what you're looking for, of course. And the team will help. We have people on staff for that--ask them for anything. They'll get you a car and look for houses for you or furniture or whatever you need, really."
"Yes, of course," Vincent said. AZ had a player services manager who'd handled most of these things, so he'd assumed Spurs would have the same. "But I wonder...are there better areas to live than others."
"Of course," Toby said with a shrug. "London is enormous, so, of course some parts are better. As Jan said, it's all about what you want."
"Hmm," Vincent said.
In truth, he wasn't exactly sure what he wanted. He didn't much relish the idea of spending every day in as much traffic as he'd faced on his way here, so wherever this neighbourhood was, he thought he'd probably rule it out. At AZ he'd lived nearly 30km from Alkmaar, but the trip had been easy. Here, it didn't much seem that way.
"If you want to avoid traffic," came a soft voice from beside him. Christian, his eyes turned downward towards the table as he picked at the hem of his plain white t-shirt. "You'll want to live in the Northeast. Enfield or Barnet. I wouldn't go much below the north circular."
"Oh." Vincent had no idea what any of that meant, but he imagined it would make sense to whomever he was speaking to at the club about finding a place to live. "Is that..."
He stopped himself short, unsure of his intentions for asking the question that came to mind. It was innocent enough, really--a teammate wanting to learn more about the rest of his teammates and his new city. No one could fault him for it.
Christian stared over at him, blue-green of his eyes now bright under the sharp lighting of the restaurant, and Vincent's whole body shuddered and trembled.
He took a breath, held it, and forced himself to continue. Christian was his teammate. Starting tomorrow they'd have to share a training pitch, so Vincent had better at least figure out how to navigate a simple question over dinner.
"Is that where you live?" he asked. "Northeast? Where did you say? Barrett?"
"Barnet," Christian said, voice matter-of-fact as he turned away from Vincent and moved to staring intently at the small slip of paper that displayed the menu. "No."

Wagonjwa
Zelfmoord is behoorlijk taboe in Tanzania.

Minnesota Twins-Houston Astros Series Preview
9.3.18-Kyle Gibson RHP (7-11) 3.79 ERA Vs. Dallas Keuchel LHP (10-10) 3.58 ERA
9.4.18-TBA Vs. Justin Verlander RHP (13-9) 2.78 ERA
9.5.18-Jake Odorizzi RHP (5-9) 4.41 ERA Vs. Framber Valdez LHP (2-1) 1.26 ERA
The Twins At A Glance- The Twins started off their second swing of a nine-game road trip on a good note with a win over the Rangers. The next two days weren’t so kind as Texas beat them 7-4 on Saturday then demolished them 18-4 on Sunday. The Twins did call up Zack Littell, who threw four innings out of the bullpen yesterday. The roster is now at 31 and the Rochester Red Wings last game is on Labor Day. John Curtiss and maybe Chase De Jong would be options for call-ups once there season ends. Eddie Rosario didn’t play the whole series in Texas with a quadriceps injury. It’s undetermined when he’ll play again. Jake Cave had a good weekend in Arlington. He went 5-for-11 with three homers. The Twins had Gabriel Moya be the opener on Sunday. Stephen Gonsalves might get the start on Tuesday, but the Twins won’t know until after Monday’s game I guess. Taylor Rogers has a 14 2/3 scoreless innings streak. Matt Belisle should be well-rested after throwing three pitches on Sunday then getting ejected because Alan Porter doesn’t know baseball.
The Astros At A Glance- The Astros are are getting guys healthy in time for the playoff push. Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, Brian McCann and George Springer were all out with various injuries and are back in the lineup. Houston split a four-game set with Anaheim over the weekend at Minute Maid Park. Jose Altuve leads the team with a .321 batting average and is third in the American League batting race behind JD Martinez and Mookie Betts. Alex Bregman has been the heart and soul of this team in 2018. He leads the team with 27 homers and 88 RBI’s. He is such an underrated player on this team and can play shortstop for any other team. The Astros just have Carlos Correa, which pushes him to third base. The Astros have eight guys with ten or more homers this year. They have hit 176 total homers this season. The starting staff features three 13-game winners in Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole, and Charlie Morton. The Twins will only see Verlander of those three in this series. The Astros have had three different closers this year. At first it was Ken Giles then Hector Rondon. Now, Roberto Osuna is the closer after the Astros traded Ken Giles to the Blue Jays. Hector Rondon, Chris Devinski, Will Harris, Collin McHugh, and Ryan Pressly all help set Osuna up in a stacked bullpen.
What To Watch For- The Twins took two out of three from the Astros in April at Target Field. That was before the season took a downfall after the snow-outs and postponements. Kyle Gibson is (3-1) with a 3.74 ERA in six starts against the Astros. Dallas Keuchel is (2-3) with a 4.50 ERA in five games against the Twins. Justin Verlander is (18-9) with a 3.06 ERA in 35 starts versus the Twins. Joe Mauer has a .329 average with four homers in 79 at-bats against Verlander. Jake Odorizzi is (3-0) with a 0.74 ERA in four starts against the Astros. Brian McCann has three homers off Odorizzi in his career. Joe Mauer is 4-for-9 off Joe Smith and 9-for-17 with two homers off Tony Sipp. The Twins don’t play that much against contending teams in the final month. They have three with the Astros, three with the Yankees, and three with the Athletics, so we won’t see much playoff atmosphere baseball. Enjoy the higher intensity games folks because it will be rare in September!
