Song Review: Jerry Douglas - “Something You Got”
Jerry Douglas got something at the intersection of bluegrass, soul and blues.
Douglas’ loose rendition of Chris Kenner’s “Something You Got” follows his instrumental version of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” ahead of the Sept. 20 release of the set.
My, my, whoa, whoa/I love you so, Douglas and his bandmates sing on the refrain, leading into Dobro, fiddle and electric guitar solos from Douglas, Christian Sedelmyer and Mike Seal, respectively.
Leaving plenty of breathing room between the notes gives “Something You Got” the space to sound like it could collapse. Daniel Kimbro’s bass provides the foundation to ensure it does not.
Grade card: Jerry Douglas - “Something You Got” - A-

Showdown in Little Tokyo

Summary: Japan-raised American cop Chris Kenner (Dolph Lundgren) is partnered with Japanese-American cop Johnny Murata (Brandon Lee) and bond over a love of martial arts in time for an investigation into the yakuza.
Funnier than and as OTT as expected for early 1990s actioner. Also well-balanced two-hander; Lee almost runs away with film.
Rating: 3.75/5

man did chicano bands in the 60’s love covering Land of A 1000 Dances by Chris Kenner! 😭. Both Thee Midniters and Cannibal and The Headhunters covered the song. Cannibal and The Headhunter’s cover reached number 30 on Billboard. (and since this is a beatles blog i will forever mention how awesome it is that Cannibal and The Headhunters, a chicano band, got to open for The Beatles!)

[ abigail cowen | she/her | 19 ] rumor has it that ARIA CORDEAUX has been seen wandering around town. they are a WITCH/WEREWOLF who is one of the SURVIVORS. they are known to be DISPUTATIOUS but deep down they are MAGNANIMOUS. when it comes to the brewing conflict in new orleans they’re on the side of THE MASQUERADE.

history:
Growing up in California, Aria’s life was anything but normal. She born to a werewolf father who was destined to be alpha and a witch mother who survived a crazed city with an even more crazed coven and had a witch/werewolf hybrid sister. But their parents tried their hardest to make sure that the girls grew up with as normal of a life as was possible.
That was until they started to tap into their powers and really experiment with magic. Cordelia taught the girls as much as she could. But the two of them began excelling faster than she could teach. Aria put up one hell of a fight, wanting nothing more than to stay in her own little bubble in California with her family. She was happy, she was comfortable. But her parents insisted that it was the best thing for her, to be around other witches, to learn from the best.
It was nice being around her cousins, seeing them more than once for a couple weeks in the summer. But that was about it. Aria studied enough to make it through her classes and fly under the radar of any overly concerned teachers. She was surviving. That was until the one night that Casper practically dragged her out of her bed, forcing her to socialize and go to a party.
Aria was completely out of her element, staying away from the crowd, until a nice blonde witch came up to her and started making conversation. She had seen him in classes before, but she hadn’t talked to him. She barely knew is name. small talk didn’t come easily for the redhead. But for some reason, between the two of them, the conversation easily flowed. It was without a second thought that she was talking and laughing.
From that night on, Aria was like a completely different person - a person that she hadn’t been in a long time. Not since she left California. Austin brought out the best in her. She began excelling in her classes, becoming stronger. But the world came crashing down around her that summer when she took a human life while surfing. It was an accident, one could argue that she wasn’t at fault. But it couldn’t be denied. Her curse was triggered. She was officially a hybrid. She feared that her transition every month would change her. She feared that it would scare Austin away. But each full moon, Austin was sat outside her cell and was there the next morning.
Aria’s life was good. She was happy. She was powerful. And then she had a ring from the most perfect man who loved every bit of her, even the broken bits. She had everything she could have ever asked for. But, just as it had once before, when she truly began to feel happy and comfortable, the universe had other plans for her when her mother, her sister, and herself were sent away by Grayson in an attempt to save them from the fate that he was about to suffer when a group from his pack attempted to overthrow him as alpha and he subsequently lost his life.
Though her family had settled in New Orleans, she was riddled with guilt for essentially leaving her father alone to die. She felt as if she could barely make it through day-to-day, let alone care about any sort of supernatural war going on around them. Her goal for every day was to get out of bed, to manage her grief. If she was able to do anything else, it was a win in her book.

Today's compilation:
Baby Boomer Classics: Dance Sixties 1985/1988 R&B / Soul / Rock & Roll
Marking my return to my glorious music blog with a whole batch of feet-movin' classics from yesteryear. Here we have Dance Sixties, a dispatch from the California-based JCI label's Baby Boomer Classics series that gives us a brief glimpse into some old, uptempo gold.
But before we get right into it, there's a couple things that need addressing: firstly, there is more than one iteration of this comp that's floating around out there. The original one came out in 1985, and then a newer version surfaced a few years afterwards that replaced a couple tracks. And what I have here is a combination of both of those albums.
And second—and I don't know how on earth I keep running into such fundamental errors with releases like these—this album purports to be comprised of nothing but 60s dance hits, but that's not entirely true. For example, Ike & Tina Turner's Grammy-winning cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary" is not a 60s song. It was recorded and released in 1970. It's a terrifically infectious R&B number and all, but it really has no business being on this release.
Speaking of covers, though, this overall selection is pretty interesting, because a whole bunch of these songs were actually made more famous by other people. And in a couple of cases, those artists who made those songs more famous are on here, but the songs that they supply are different hits.
For instance, this album's excellently noisy closer, Cannibal & The Headhunters' #30 US hit, "Land of 1000 Dances"—which is actually a cover in and of itself of Chris Kenner's 1962 version—was made far more famous by Wilson Pickett. But Wilson Pickett's offering here is another one of his biggest hits, "In the Midnight Hour," which happens to kick off this whole Dance Sixties affair.
And the same goes for Aretha Franklin too. It would've been perfectly understandable for her cover of Otis Redding's "Respect" to be on here, as it's one of the single-most important entries in the American songbook, with both its soundtracking of the civil rights movement throughout the late 60s and its assertive reversal of traditional gender roles in its lyrics; but it's Otis' original that appears on here, while Aretha's also sublime "Think" is supplied as well.
And to the untrained ear, one might think that there's another Aretha song on here too: "Rescue Me," which was by the unfairly blackballed Fontella Bass, but has been assumed by many over the years to have been an Aretha song itself, so much so, that Aretha actually performed it in an ad for Pizza Hut back in the day as "Deliver Me" 😭.
How can you not get a kick out of this silly shit?!:
youtube
And another song that people often confuse for being by a different act is The Knickerbockers' "Lies," a mid-60s burner by a garage band from New Jersey that sounds an awful lot like The Beatles!
OK, a couple more things before I sign off here: it's ultimately hard for me to pick a favorite among all of these tunes, but I think it might have to be The Spencer Davis Group's "I'm a Man," which has the same name as a song by Bo Diddley that was also famously covered by The Yardbirds, but is actually a completely different composition. In truth, the star of the Spencer Davis Group was not Spencer Davis himself—the only real reason why they decided to go with that name in the first place seems to be because no one else in the band was keen on doing interviews and press junkets, and it was assumed that the group's namesake would naturally have to be the one to fulfill those duties 😅. Undoubtedly, the one who shone most brightly in this band was a teenaged Steve Winwood, who possessed a distinctly powerful voice and was a total monster on the Hammond organ too. And on "I'm a Man," which comes with a whole lot of different bits of percussive rhythms and howling backing vocals, Steve manages to energetically strut it all.
And for a tune that's a bit more obscure than a lot of the rest of these, there's one-hit wonder Pacific Gas & Electric's "Are You Ready," a psychedelic soul-rock groover that was criminally left off of the 1988 version of this comp. This tune, like Ike & Tina Turner's "Proud Mary," was also released as a single in 1970, but because it originated from PG&E's self-titled album from the year prior, I'm willing to not lodge a complaint about it. If you love a song with a good, extended guitar solo that uses a delayed echo in one of its channels, then boy, is this #14 US hit worth a listen for you! Really fantastic stuff.
Happy to be back with a high-quality crop of songs such as this. I don't know what the rest of this big series has in store, but if it's anything like this particular release, then I'm definitely looking forward to it. An album where I don't even get to fawn over a personal favorite like Jackie Wilson's "Higher & Higher" should give you a good indication of just how top-notch this whole thing really is. A very well-put-together compilation, even if not every song on it is actually from the decade that it claims to represent 😅.

The Ledge #668
At first glance, the latest installment of the cover song series is no different than any previous episode. Behind the scenes, though, serendipity is at play here.
Like usual, I had quitely filled my "covers" folder over the last few months. A few weeks ago, I had accumulated enough tracks to schedule the show. I could have done it at the end of April, or last week. Next week even. Or I could have held it over until June. But no, I was determed in do on May 23.
Then on my usual record store run last Friday I found a number of great Minneapolis garage rock records from the 50s and 60s. Most were compilatons, but I also found a Sundazed Music reissue of The Gestures' self-titled album from 1966. Hailing from Mankato, MN, they had a hit in 1964 with "Run, Run, Run", their debut single. I picked up this reissue, and loved it!
Fast forward to yesterday as I was looking at the various new releases for the week. I was excited to see that Beebe Gallini had a new record out called Begged, Borrowed and Stealed! Even better was the fact that not only is this a record of nothing but covers but one of their selections is that tune by The Gestures!!! So for this week's feature record of the week I have a whole set of tunes from this great record.
And as if that wasn't eneough serendipity for one week, I also came across a covers record by Australin ska-punkers The Resignators, which includes a cover of "Teenage Kicks"!!! I swear the universe set up both of these acts to release these records just for me to air them this week!
Due to all this good fortune, I decided to not dump any of the other tracks I had initially picked for this week's broadcast. So this is a supersized episode with over a half hour of overtime! I hope you love all of these tunes. Please let me know what you liked the most!
