Chronotopia: Second Skin is a fresh take on a little known dark fairytale
At long last, Brittany based indie studio, Träumendes Mädchen released their fairytale inspired visual novel, Chronotopia: Second Skin. The project was crowdfunded on Kickstarter in 2016, but due to various circumstances spent years in development limbo. But, the developer has been working on the game and now it is finally available to play. Chronotopia: Second Skin is a unique rewriting of the Donkeyskin fairytale, a darker variation of Cinderella. Follow Kionna into a painful but ultimately rewarding search for her true self.

do you have any otome/dating sim recs? aside from diamond heart of course ^_^
for otome dating sims (like stat raisers) Tokimeki memorial girl's side has fan translations for the DS versions of the games and the PSP version of GS3 (which is what I play, it's an improved version with more content <3) you can play all of those on a mobile device with an emulater as well, PPSSPP the psp emulator runs on android n_n
for other games that have official eng releases for dating sims i sent my friend a lot of them before so I'm copying my list from there lol:
Also I recommend checking out the English Otome Games account that is still very actively documenting and sharing all these games
PAID SIM GAMES:
Backstage Pass THE GOAT fr fr there IS one female LI in this btw!
Dandelion Wishes Brought to You, from the same people who made Mystic Messenger, this was an ealier game i liked it!
Lucky Rabbit Reflex, okay i love this one but a lot of ppl are turned off by the art but it has a great cast and its very funny, but the setting is europe so watch out! also fair warning it IS older it was released n 2011! so it 1. has really low resolution and 2. tacky tasteless dialogue... i remember the r slur is used in it u.u.
MAGICAL DIARY THE GOAT dude, it takes place in a magic school so if you like witch magical girls this one is for you, There's also a boy MC version that came outlater, Wolf Hall. also has female LI options
Paid visual novel otomes!
These ones are regular VNs like MWDH but unlike MWDH shouldnt have much emphasis on stat raising at all.
Amnesia Memories: This was really fun for me I liked the mystery and Kent is my love of my life lol
Band Camp Boyfriend: okay i havent finished this one but it looks really fun and cute so there
Chronotopia Second Skin: this one's based on a variation of Cinderella and has a black cast and female LI options!
Date Warp: man i fucking loved this one it had a fun mystery
Heart Fragment: one i've been keeping an eye on, it's also technically "in progress" but it's doing an episodic DLC model with very affordable DLC tis also has female LI options
With Eyes of Ice: this one is a linear VN with only one LI, and it's meant to be pretty depressing haha, but ebi-hime markets it as an otome/adjacent game and I really like her prose and I loved what I read so far
FREE SIM GAMES!
RE: Alistair is super old but a goodie and a classic for indie otome fans i think n_n Backstage Pass is a spiritual successor to this!
Christmas and Valentines Otome, I didn;t realize they had stats. the creator made halloween otome first and it didn't have that from what i remember, all three are pretty great and theyre all free
Free VN otome:
Cinderella Phenomenon, another classic this one is very popular for good reason its nicely made, a good length story, and best of all? Free babey.
Bell Maidens Bloom: this one is in progress but it's releasing at a time so I'm not rlly considering it a demo ? the selling point is a soft black girl MC lol!
XOXO Droplets: it's free to play with a paid extended version. You play as a girl who's a jerk who doesnt GAF and is pursuing a bunch of jerks just cuz they're hot lmao it's very funny xD
Our Life is by the same people as the above but what if instead of being an asshole rizzing up jerks you're a nice person who's chill and getting to know a shy autistic boy over the course of your life. only one LI
Tailor Tales! This one isn't a pure VN because it has a fashion boutique mechanic? I didn't realize it was totally free but it only has paid DLC for the sexy content xD... you run a boutique and get to rizz up hot guys, it's really intricately done and has a LOT of content
Demos to watch out for
These ones are demos rn and not full games in any capacity, but they look epic and I want ppl to keep an eye out
Edge of Elsewhere: from the same person as lucky rabbit reflex, i really liked the demo so far and it doesn't have the same issues of dated writing (but it still has the issue of being in europe, sad!)
Snowkissed Romance: it's based on 90s anime and is a stat sim game! i really liked what I saw and the art's really cute,
Mirage Noir: a mystery otome! it looks really fun and the art is great. I watched my friend play this one and I liked what i saw
MY DEAR LOVE; this one is SOOOOO cute, another shojo inspired one, this one more manga than 90s anime and it's also another stat raiser. it only has one li I think? but it looks really cute i loved the demo
Thread of You: I recommended my friend to play this one because Liam's VA was in it and she loves his performance lol. It's pretty fun so far though but sadly the character Phil voices doesnt have as much screentime XD;;

**Void-016 - The Ephemeral Chronotopia (Dangerous)**

Embark on a perilous odyssey through the cosmic anomalies of Weirdcore Ville with Void-016, a realm shrouded in danger and temporal enigma. Classified as "Dangerous" in the cosmic hierarchy, the Ephemeral Chronotopia challenges those who dare to navigate its ever-shifting dimensions.
Void-016 is a chaotic tapestry where time warps and folds upon itself. The landscape is a kaleidoscope of ephemeral structures, each mirage a glimpse into different temporal epochs. From ancient civilizations to distant futures, the Chronotopia weaves a cosmic dance where the past, present, and future coalesce in a disorienting spectacle.
Navigating this perilous realm demands not only physical resilience but a mental fortitude to withstand the temporal distortions that assail wanderers. The tear list designates Void-016 as "Dangerous," marking it as a cosmic tapestry where the very fabric of time poses a constant threat, challenging those who traverse its ever-changing landscapes.

Week 7
Our team divide roles of each part. As a result, composition analysis and information analysis have become separated. And I couldn't comprehensively analyze a single photo. Therefore, I realized that by analyzing each image one by one and finally discussing the results of each analysis, I was able to capture the series well. Also, since my analysis of composition using photographic terminology was insufficient, I felt it was necessary to not only read the intention from the information, but also to review composition.

Photographic Series
When I presented Simon Norfolk's "Afghanistan: Chronotopia" in class, it was a deep dive into the concept of chronotopia—where time and location mesh to paint Afghanistan’s storied past amid its war-torn present. I learned about the historical heft of Norfolk's use of a large-format camera, likely a salute to the classic landscape photography tradition, hinting that he might have used film to capture that timeless detail.
The series connects on levels beyond the obvious scars of war; each image weaves into the next, sharing themes of endurance amidst ruin, tied together by Norfolk’s thoughtful framing and the interplay of light and shadow. I noticed how the absence of shoes and the stark textures in the photos spoke volumes about the transient nature of human presence in these war landscapes. These images go beyond mere documentation—they’re a commentary on how war alters not just land but the narratives woven into it. Discussing Norfolk's work opened my eyes to the layers of meaning behind each photo, how they challenge us to reflect on the broader impacts of conflict.

Week 7 Group Project
For our project, my group chose to analyze and cover Afghanistan: Chronotopia by Simon Norfolk. We chose this series of photographs because it does a great job of telling the story of a war stricken area and the effect of human tragedy on civilization and humanity.
In terms of the composition of these photographs, they might capture the way light and shadow, texture, and the contrast between the ruined and the intact work together to tell a story. The choice of composition, angles, and framing could evoke a sense of desolation, or the passage of time.
Moreover, the color saturation within the series can help in drawing attention to specific elements within the photos. Accentuating certain colors can highlight details or focal points that contribute to the overall message. This deliberate use of saturation directs the viewer's gaze and guides their understanding of the photographer's intended message.
The message of the series emphasizes the human tragedy that has unfolded in Afghanistan. It touches on the suffering and loss of life that is often concealed in mainstream media coverage. The photographs may capture the stark contrast between the historical ruins and the modern devastation, highlighting the relentless cycle of violence that has plagued the region.
It also symbolically focuses on the sadness and loss in Afghanistan, going beyond what you usually see in the media. The photos make a strong contrast between old ruins and the new destruction, showing how violence keeps happening in the region. The photographer, Simon Norfolk, uses an old-fashioned camera made of wood and brass, which looks like an antique. In an interview he said, "You know, the camera I use is made of wood – it’s a 4×5 field camera, made of mahogany and brass – and it looks like an antique."
Norfolk's choice of an old-style camera also adds an interesting touch, making us think about the past while looking at the present. Through our analysis, we want to help others see the different sides of conflict, how it affects people, and how art, like these photos, can tell important stories that words sometimes can't fully express. I think Norfolk used a small aperture because the subjects in each photograph are sharp and in focus.

Research Blog Post: Simon Norfolk
For my first research blog post I decided to write about Simon Norfolk. In particular, I wanted to write about his photo book, Afghanistan Chronotopia.
Simon Norfolk is an architectural and landscape photographer. He has published four photo books, which are displayed at various art museums. I found his photo book, Afghanistan Chronotopia, particularly interesting and I enjoyed viewing all of the photographs from it.

The Balloon Seller by Simon Norfolk.
Afghanistan Chronotopia highlights various scenes throughout Afghanistan which is now in ruins as a result from the war that has been going on for almost three decades. Looking at all of the photos, it was interesting to see all of the damage that has been caused. However, there are a lot of nice architectural buildings around Afghanistan that seem to be inspired by old European style architecture. In my opinion, the destruction of the buildings, which are now ruins, adds to their history and significance.

The destroyed Institute of Archaeology, Kabul by Simon Norfolk.
Overall, I really liked this photo book because I am a big fan of not only landscape photography, but history as well. Seeing these photos makes me want to visit historic places around the world to capture photographs such as the ones taken by Simon Norfolk.

— Sebastian Matzner, “Queer Unhistoricism: Scholars, Metalepsis, and Interventions of the Unruly Past” in Deep Classics: Rethinking Classical Reception (ed. Shane Butler; 2016)
[id: Academic writing on literary themes can be seen as metaleptic insofar as it dissolves boundaries between (previously) separate narratives and chronotopes and collapses them ad hoc into a shared time/space (in the discussion of the theme). Such academic writing, then, might be said to be creating and operating in a decidedly queer chronotope. As queer as the chronotope of literature itself, subsuming both the act of reading (reception theory: every text is read vis-à-vis all other texts) and the act of writing (intertextuality: all texts are a mosaic of quotations).]
