So I’m going to start hormone therapy, it looks like. Not in a trans way—don’t get too excited—in the way that I’m getting old and my endocrine system has apparently started to break down. I guess you could say I’m going cis2. Super cis.

Max Miedingler

After much deliberation, I have completed my design for my magazine spread on Max Miedingler. Although I am inexperienced in InDesign, I am extremely happy with the results of my project with adding depth, unity, design and text wrap around certain areas. My designer is simplistic yet adventurous and endeavoring, so I wanted to create my magazine similar to his aesthetic. The text flows easily and is readable, while the graphic I chose is clear and effective to showcasing who he was as a typeface designer. 

Additionally, I didn’t want to swamp my design in colors to distract from its simplistic aesthetic, so I kept it simple with red, white and black. Although red and black in the design world can be overbearing and too strong (competing with one another), I made sure to carefully use these colors to achieve my goal. I wanted my design to also flow easy with readers, not feel confused or get a headache reading it. The header is bold, and the text follows suit.

Overall, I enjoyed creating my design, and I feel I learned a lot from creating my magazine spread. Considering I want to venture into magazine design, I feel my spread is engaging. Having some feedback, I see how I was relatively on the right track, but I needed to tweak certain elements to get to my final design. Because of that, my initial designed compared to my final design doesn’t differ that much from each other. Despite the fact I still have a long way to go learning InDesign, I am happy with my project.

Mas somado ao ciático vai até o dedão do pé. Troca o lado no Atlas, a primeira vértebra cervical. O Atlas carrega o mundo nas costas. Alinha e desalinha dentes, olhos, o sistema vestibular (ouvidos), e o septo, afetando a respiração. Se observe no espelho. O q define pro alemão a entrada na puberdade feminina é a generalizada reclamação sobre seu nariz. Torto, inchado, vermelho, cheio de cravos. Ñ importa. O nariz e as sinuses são tecidos moles, cartilagem q MUDA de acordo com a tensão cervical. Vira a cabeça da esquerda para a direita. Tem um lado mais tenso? Enxerga aquelas linhas transversais no pescoço (de C3-C5) q vc acha q é a idade... pensa ao contrário pq vem do quadril fora do lugar. Qual a relação? No começo achávamos q era a #TPM. Cólicas menstruais fortes causando escoliose. A gnt se contorce de dor. Mas os meninos estão iguais. Eles NÃO tem menstruação. É o intestino, a dieta ruim, q te contorce de cima a baixo durante a noite e impede vc de dormir, faz vc roncar e ranger os dentes, acordar com dores no corpo, e zonzo na cabeça como se fosse uma ressaca q se cura com um steak sangrento e dois ovos estalados à cavalo. Quem entendeu a relação pode entender pq vacina causa estrabismo e dano cerebral. Pronto falei. Quem ñ entendeu nada, tem 2 opções. 1. What are you really proud of?

I'm proud of my design as a whole and how every element came together in the end. Throughout my planning and early workshopping I knew I wanted to emulate the geometric and clean style of Swiss graphic designers and I think it was successful. I'm especially satisfied with how his name turned out, it looks and acts more like an object than just text.

What worked well to create your design's organization and hierarchy?

I created a strong unity between the different elements and filled the page while not overwhelming the viewer. I wanted to utilize as much of the frame as possible without it being cluttered with stuff just to fill space.

What aspect of the program helped you execute your ideas?

Being able to view the print overview and get perspective about the final product The ability to extend elements outside the visible frame while keeping them intact was a godsend and made shifting things around much easier.

What Principles of Design is your spread successfully portraying?

Unity and contrast are two principles most prominently featured within my design. The splashes of red stand out sharply against the black and white, and only using a singular accent color makes the composition look coherent.

Do you feel like you grew as a designer during this process?

I absolutely do. Having never worked with InDesign I found it very intuitive and was never frustrated with features that didn't work how I wanted. I learned about the relationship between text and images, and incorporating them create interesting compositions that still prioritize legibility.

Name something you learned both technically and conceptually from your project?

I learned that not filling everything and leaving some negative space is important, it leaves room for each element to breath. I resisted the urge to insert more red highlights into the empty black areas but the space is important for separation and distinction between text.

Max Miedinger Magazine Process

Born on December 24th, 1910, in Zurich Switzerland, Max Miedinger was a typeface designer best known for the Neue Haas Grotesk typeface in 1957, later renamed Helvetica in 1960. Without prior knowledge of his soon to be successful breakthrough, Miedinger created a revolutionized typeface for Switzerland design of the 20th century that showcased “clarity, legibility and sobriety.” (DNB, 1). 

Earlier in his career, Miedinger continued to perfect his skills in typography by doing apprenticeships in various book offices. He then entered Kunstgewerbeschule (Zurich University of Arts). Afterwards, Miedinger gained employment with Haas Type Foundry as a representative. Miedinger worked under Edouard Hoffman to create a new typeface for Haas. 

When Miedinger began freelancing and working independently, he went on to design Haas sans serif typeface, which was renamed Helvetica in 1960. Miedinger died on March 8th, 1980, leaving behind a massive legacy for such an iconic typeface that became a groundbreaking landscape for the 20th century.
