Happy Friday to all, but especially my fellow Tortured Poets!

Don't you love when the stars align to make something beautiful for you? That's what happened with my Happy Hour rec for this week.

Harry Potter, returning member of the Oxford University Boat Club, has two goals for the spring of 2005: beat Cambridge, and beat Draco Malfoy. Perhaps not in that order.

I've been in a bit of a fic rut - and definitely not because of a lack of great fic options - but nothing was hitting right for me at this moment in time. Finally, in my marked for later list, I came back across Citrusses' fic, and was thrilled to finally read it. I'd been looking forward to it for a long time because I love Citrusses as a writer. It just so happened to be a perfect pick for the album drop I've been looking forward to as well with it's academic setting and Tortured Poet Draco.

For someone who doesn't enjoy any sports whatsoever, I've recently found that I adore sports fics. The competition and camaraderie provide a setting and tension that I really enjoy and this holds true with rowing as well. Citrusses' dialogue made me laugh out loud several times while reading and the building tension of Harry and Draco's relationship (for good and bad) kept me absorbed in this fic.

Most of all, I loved how Citrusses wrote college students. I so clearly remember being 19-22 and the uncertainty and anxiety that I constantly felt. It's hard to suddenly be expected to be an adult, but have so little experience at it. Citrusses wrote that feeling in a way that was realistic, but gave her characters grace when they made their mistakes.

Even if you are not a Tortured Poet, I think it'd be impossible not to enjoy Citrusses' fic. And if you are a Tortured Poet, once you've finally finished analyzing all the lyrics you should definitely come give this a read to keep those vibes going!

Directive, by Robert Frost. my number one always!! it's so twisty and meandering and a little stressful but of course insistently pastoral, one of my favorite kinds of poems ever.

You Can Take Off   Your Sweater, I’ve Made Today Warm by Paige Lewis. this is one that almost has to be listened to, and there's a good recording at that link! it's just such a wonderful poem. the last lines are so haunting and frantic and small. like:

come back             you forgot your sweater what if there’s nothing there when you — you don’t have your sweater what if it’s cold

like. to shreds you say dot gif.

3. The City, by C.P. Cavafy. oh i love this poem. it's one of those that makes me wish i knew greek so i could read it in its original language. it's absolutely devastating and brutal.

4. Ash Wednesday by T.S. Eliot. i have a Thing for angsty religious poems and this one is sort of the pinnacle of that. the dark tone of the prayer and the way he twists it this way and that; like, my man thomas stearns was going through it in this poem (he was sort of always going through it, tbf) and it shows and it's so good.

5. The Two-Headed Calf by Laura Gilpin. i mean, i sort of had to pick this one lol. it was actually difficult! this could have been Funeral Blues! it could have been literally anything from War Music! it could have been Travelling Together! it could have been sooo many poems, god. but no, i think it has to be this one. twice as many stars as usual ✨⭐️✨

16. What are you most excited about with finishing this WIP?

Finishing it. Just finishing it. Will feel so amazing and good to say I MADE THIS, LOOKIT.

I'm very excited for other people to read it! I haven't talked about it outside of my writing group because it feels like a fun secret, and I'm still having fun with it being a secret, but also it's gonna be very fun to share and talk about.

It's technically a gift! Which is part of why the not-talking has been fun. So I'm very looking forward to giving it to its intended.

22. What is a spoiler you can give us for something incredibly insignificant in your WIP?

Head Teacher Hermione Granger, to her frustration, chairs a meeting of the Hogwarts Board of Governors.

Summary:

Harry’s eyes landed again on the burn mark on Malfoy’s arm, his mouth going dry in response. “I, uh, I have something to ask you.” “Yes, I gathered that. I also thought that, by your own admission, you were fucking it up, so I’d best leave you to it.” “It’s … certainly something to do with fucking,” Harry said, rather weakly. Malfoy’s eyes widened, then quickly narrowed. “Are you trying to solicit me for sex, Potter?” “Um … I won’t pay you?” “What the fuck.” Harry decides that it’s high time to lose his virginity, and figures that asking Malfoy is his best option. He’s fit, he won’t go to the papers, and he’ll be fine with Harry’s ‘no emotional attachment’ plan. Surely nothing could go wrong there.

okay, for 8th year

C: Neutral. A good author might be able to sell it, but a bad one will kill it deader than dead.

this one is so good when done well, but i feel like a lot of the narratives around it can be very repetitive, and it's hard to find fresh, creative spins on it. which is never really a fault of the authors but more a fault of the trope, if that makes sense?? it can be very limiting without a lot of places to go. but when someone does put a fun spin on it and uses it more as a setting/backdrop than a straightforward 8th year plot...ooh that's so good.

for memory loss

A: Love it. Spend my time combing AO3 for it.

lol zero surprises here i'm sure!! the possibilities for angst with this are wonderfully painful, and i love every possible route this takes: falling in love again, finding a magical cure, identity porn/guilt about falling in love with different versions of people...so much potential and i eat it all up.

i, insanely, have another memory loss fic idea that's probably too angsty to ever write, but that shows you how much the potential of this sort of thing appeals to my angst-loving brain!!

for fake dating

A: Love it. Spend my time combing AO3 for it.

another absolute fave, and i love drarry because this is a pairing i think it really works for?? like my favorite drarry falling in love dynamic is ultimately "oh god damn it, i'm starting to have feelings for him, this is absolutely terrible" and fake dating sets that up so well by forcing them to think of each other differently. my other favorite thing is like, not mutual pining or "i've been in long with you all along and never realized/was in denial" but that moment of realization that's sort of like "oh, i could be in love with him, that's an option i've never considered" and fake dating is what makes them consider it?? love that, A+, no notes.

okay one more note: i love fake dating when the reasoning for it is plausible and not contrived, which it always was in my last fandom and that's why i've never written it!! so like, my next fic lined up after turkey baster (or maybe my next next fic, don't look at me, i have too many ideas and only ten fingers to type with) is fully a fake dating plot and i plan to roll around in it and go super self-indulgent with the drama and i'm very excited.

WIP Snip

Nearly finished this fic, final extended scene is a go atm. In this snippet, Harry has just arrived unexpectedly at the Manor where Draco is undercover pretending to be a Death Eater. CW for wandpoint confessions and mild angst.

Draco’s eyes narrowed but he put his hand inside his robe and then, quicker than Harry could have hoped to notice, Draco had his wand out and was holding it to Harry's throat, pressing hard so the wood bit into the tender skin under his jawline. "You are Harry, I suppose? You seem right, of course, but there’s always a chance that someone enterprising might come along with a stash of Polyjuice and a gift for impersonation.” “Oh, fuck off,” Harry managed, and the point of Draco’s wand wormed slowly deeper into flesh. “You knew it was me the second you saw me.” “Mmm, I suppose that’s true,” Draco murmured agreeably, something suggestive about how the sound travelled through the small space between them. His free hand strayed to Harry’s forehead and he brushed his fingers lightly over the dried blood that Harry could feel tightening on the skin there. “But indulge me. Tell me something only you would know.” Harry scoffed, though he was thinking with his throat tight of Arthur knocking at the door of the Burrow in the middle of the night long ago, and Molly blushing, and how they had exposed the long intimacy of their marriage for safety's sake. “There’s a lot I could tell you,” he said tightly. “If you’re really sure you want to hear it.” “By all means,” Draco said, eyes on Harry, searching for something in his face. “You fucked me in that bed and afterwards you asked me not to leave because you wanted to wake up with me? Remember?” Draco wanted to look towards the bed, Harry could tell by the way his eyes flickered, but he resisted, and so Harry went on. “You told me you wanted us to win this war just so you could take me back to London and feed me my favourite ice-cream off your spoon. You told me the only thing you miss about France is how you and your mum really got to know each other properly, and that when she gets back you want to take her for dinner to that little French bistro we went to that time in Edinburgh. I know you remember that, you said the wine was better than anything in the cellar here.” Draco nodded shortly, and almost regretfully pulled his wand away from Harry’s neck. He didn’t move away. “Yes, fair enough, I believe you.” But Harry couldn’t stop, didn’t know how to shut up now he had started. “The last time we were together, you told me that I’m generous with my love. Do you remember that? And I wondered then… because I’d never said it, had I? Not out loud, anyway. Neither of us had. But I thought, maybe— Maybe it meant that you knew.” Draco was staring, his eyes wide and shocked, a blush crawling up his neck, blotchy with heat. Neither of them moved, the silence between them growing until Harry could practically feel it. Draco almost raised his hand to Harry then; Harry sensed the arrested movement, the enforced stillness. He didn’t know what he’d do if Draco touched him. But he didn’t have to find out, because that’s when the knock at the door sounded.
