I have the disc to play Civilization 4, and I have a computer with a disc drive... but uh. apparently due to anti-piracy stuff they added to Windows 10 the game refuses to run. I tried setting up a VM running a version of windows without the stupid anti-piracy stuff, but then it demanded that the VM have a disc drive (despite the whole program already being loaded onto it? for some reason?), and I could not figure out how to make the VM think it had a disc drive, and after a few months decided to just get rid of the VM and civ 4 files to save space. I contacted the company who owns Civ 4, and found that they had a system where you could show you had the disc and then get a key for it on steam, but when I went to go use the system, I found it was DISCONTINUED! Meaning that despite literally having a legally purchases copy of Civ 4 in my house, I cannot play it, and therefore the only possible way to play Civ 4 is to pirate it.

This is an example of why I find civ6 very annoying. As you can see, there's no easy way to get from the East to the Mediterranean. I was building a canal wonder to bridge the path through the city of Chengdu, when the Romans somehow beat me to it, putting a canal next to Nidaros in the North ... that actually has no economic or military value to anyone. Now, I get it, the AI can't figure out how to use these things effectively but it still removes fun from the game when the AI does something a real ruler simply wouldn't do. That canal was done instead of military units that could have been used to conquer my city, for example. It just kills immersion. I have to admit I miss Civ 4, and wish they had focussed more on updating that rather than moving off into a totally new direction with Civ5. It really doesn't feel connected to the earlier games. The Firetuner program is pretty good, even though placing terrain features in a live game has huge issues. I still haven't seen one video where someone succeeded in placing a river. I can't help but miss Leonard Nimoy's voiceover. And the music quality has dropped to the point I just disable it for the most part. Sid Meir's brilliance has faded from the world, alas.

I just checked - Civ 7 is not doing at all well. "Weeks into the game's release, previous entries of the games still surpassed Civilization VII active players, with Civilization V showing identical numbers and Civilization VI showing double the number of daily active players.[35]" The fact that Julius Ceasar was effectively sold separately is a sign of the decline into multitudes of microtransactions. The first game is unspeakably crude in many ways, but it had that charm - you could play as the Romans, and slowly build to conquer the Earth. Since then, everything seems to have gone woke. There's huge concentration on non-western countries, Maoris for example can travel across the globe and basically conquer the Americas while you are in the stone age, and I get the feeling whoever is in charge just hates the whole European story of growth, conquest and colonisation that made the original great. Also, there is so much of the game play devoted to carbon sequestration etc. My god is that dull and preachy.

I played Civ to death up to version 4, but it started going downhill in 5, and then 6 was full of woke parts and modders trying to fix it up (the female models used were quite hideous, for example) ... And civ 7 just plonked out like something out of the rear end of a dementia patient who forgot their nappy. There was no hype for it. People are still complaining about problems with Civ 6 that were never fixed (crashes or endless loops - especially if you have city states, and it alll grinds infinitely slowly in the later game without any apparent reason, to the point some claim it was a particular patch that did it, but no-one is sure). It was a great game. At it's time Civ 1 was one of the best games of the world. People still love the theme music from Civ4, and Leonard Nimoy's narration is unmatched. But I don't know what went wrong. Maybe Sid's influence waned, and the folk who wanted microtransactions and Sweet Baby Inc took over. Who knows?

Civ2 had this - I had a lot of criticisms of Civ2, Civ3 was a lot better, but this aspect was fun and that women was hot.

Notice almost all the women were gorgeous in Civ4? It's because they understood that most customers are heterosexual, and don't want to see a dick in the panties - strange, but true! Hatshepsut was such a cutie, but always seemed upset by something. Oh, but when she smiled, the sun came out.

Catherine, on the other hand, was a total flirt, and smiled often, because she was imagining just how good it would feel hearing your breath gurgling after she stuck the knife in. Stilll .... worth ... it ....

I think it was civ 3 which started the ability to upgrade all units of a given type at the same time, and I think it was civ 5 that they removed it for no apparent reason. It's utterly tedious to upgrade and choose which experience ranks a unit will have all the time. It's a weird thing to overlook. And don't me started on how awkward they made building a train line. Really, what the hell were they thinking?

The official trailer for the new Civilization 7 game has the now-obligatory black woman with a British accent leading the Mongol army. They're attempting to do a funny skit, but it's just so bad, and comes across as contemptuous of their customer base.

drabbles about the deer imagery in The Secret History (specifically in relation 2 Camilla) because her becoming a deer/believing that she did stuck in my mind (although this post will mostly take Camilla and the other's recollection of events to be as they recount it – if i examine it in it's effect as an incorrect account, that would be in a separate post)

Obviously there's, on a meta level, an irony to it – Camilla and Charles are named to make fun of the Princess Diana scandal that was happening at the time, and so ironically Camilla transforms into an animal sacred to Diana.

There's also a parallel that I think could be interesting to make between Camilla and Taygete, who for anyone unfamiliar, was turned into a deer by Artemis to protect her from Zeus' sexual advances. Although I think that what happened in the Bacchae was concensual sexually, I think it could possible be indicative in Camilla's narrative role as the "wanted"/"desired" one within the greek class – by Charles, Henry, Richard (although he wasnt there) and even Francis, although he wants to be her more so than actually wanting her.

Additionally, outside of how it actually functions within the story, her transformation into a creature associated so closely with innocence, especially in relation to Diana/Artemis' virginity, might perhaps be tied to Richards view of her as this "pure" and "virginal" person – obviously we know this is far from the truth, and he himself learns this later, but I think it definitely ties into this flawed angelic idea of her he so covets.

I think this interpretation ties into the myth of Actaeon (in terms of "deer transformation myths") although its very interesting to me that they different at key points – Camilla, the "virginual" character, is the one transformed, rather than the sexual transgressor (Charles) or the one who introduces miasma (Henry). But, like Actaeon, she is pursued and hunted – which, another key point – Actaeon is pursued and killed by his own hunting dogs, and Charles returns from the ritual with a bite mark, perhaps tying him into the myth thurther?

Katafygio, to some better known as Sulani, is a small, but important kingdom on the Manthos continent, It's a beautiful place, with lovely beaches and crystal clear water, sunny and fertile, but also dangerous - totally dependent on the forces of nature with it's earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. You could use the same words to describe their ruler. She is a stunning beauty, sweet and charming, as long as her will is not challenged, or, God forbid, if anyone were to threaten her, her family or her kingdom.
