When The Big 8 Still Served Detroit - Scott Miller, 800 CKLW Windsor | April, 1980
Billing itself as “The Great Entertainer”, here’s a bit more subdued CKLW in the cold Spring of 1980. This is quite fascinating, as between the CanCon songs (they stick out like a sore thumb) and the tempo, it sounds pretty clearly as if the station had already moved to a more Adult-Contemporary sound. Or, perhaps its just the time of day in which this was recorded. It does sound good, however,…

auto shop
This trip to the auto shop is a very big deal for Charlie. It’s the culmination of a year’s worth of work. Maybe more, if he thinks about his adolescence, and that time he panicked after the fender bender with Sarah O’Connor at the 7-Eleven on Pelham. Back then, he swore he’d never drive a car again. Back then, he had no way of knowing that promise would kill his own brother. Back then, he wouldn’t have guessed that in 2022, he’d end up earning a driver’s license all his own. He wouldn’t have guessed that for Christmas that year, he’d buy himself a car, just to have, even if it’s pretty much useless in New York City.
And he most certainly wouldn’t have guessed he’d be here, now in the spring of ‘24, waiting at an auto shop back home in Detroit.
It’s a simple thing. At least, that’s what Daniel assured him when they spoke about it earlier today. Sometimes, you just need a new tire, and you’re not the one who can fix it. Daniel even helped Charlie get the car over here, like he would have when they were young.
Young. It’s hard to believe they’re not anymore.
Perhaps he’s putting too much stock into it. Hell, he knows he is. But Charlie can’t help but feel that if he makes it out of this auto shop with his car in one piece, then he’ll be a different kind of man. He’ll be the man that Elenore deserves, the father that his children deserve, the brother that Sadie (and Sam) could be proud of. It’s all tied up in a car.
That makes him laugh. Lots of men use cars as metaphors for their lives, especially here at home, where you can’t take two steps without meeting a few dads in the automotive industry. The Motor City is more than just a jingle on the radio. It’s just that Charlie was never one of those men. His metaphors were all about keys and chords and clefts. They still are. It’s just that when you change your life, your poetic devices change, too. At least, that’s what he thinks. He was never as good with words as he pretended to be.
He sits in the waiting room of the auto shop and tries to take it in. It smells like going with his dad to fix up the truck when he was a kid. Burnt, greasy, welcoming. Charlie can’t believe he forgot that fuel is the smell of summer and safety. Of course, you don’t really forget how to be a Motown kid. You just push it down until it comes back up.
He sits there and focuses on the radio, echoey somewhere in the back of the shop. Somebody’s tuned into a local station. Maybe even CKLW. They’re buzzing and drilling and fixing in time with “Jet.” It feels just like being a little kid and not understanding anything but smells and sounds. It’s great. Elenore should be here.
Elenore should be everywhere. He’ll think about that when he gets the car back.
One of the workers appears from the back with a smile on his face. Says that Charlie’s car is done, and they’ll have a total for him in a minute or two. Charlie smiles back.
He did it.
He didn’t do anything, but he did it.
It feels like something, and on the whole ride back to the hotel, he’ll try to figure out what that is.

The so-called "Drake" radio format was very much a product of its time.
Bill Drake, the programming consultant for the RKO-General Radio group, felt that many top-40 stations had too much clutter and too much talk that distracted from what he felt should be the main mission of the station: to present contemporary music to the audience and to never forget why that audience tuned in. By cutting the clutter, introducing painstaking research as to which records to play, keeping sales from encroaching on programming and creating a presentation that emphasized a "keep it moving forward" philosophy, the format became a winner for almost all of the stations in the RKO-General group (besides KHJ, WHBQ/Memphis, WRKO/Boston, KFRC/San Francisco, KAKC/Tulsa, WOR-FM/New York and CKLW/Windsor-Detroit).
Without getting into the details of Drake's formatics, he honed his format at KYNO/Fresno and KGB/San Diego before landing the big one, KHJ, in May of 1965. KHJ shot up to number one in the LA Market in a matter of weeks and stayed on top for years.
It's definitely not true that there were no "personalities" outside of AM drive, although Drake always kept his eye on the ball: The listeners tune in to hear the music, not the jocks. Despite that goal, there were many air personalities on Drake-programmed who became famous outside of AM drive (most notably, KHJ's PM drive man "The Real" Don Steele).
Many believe that the Drake format was the predecessor of modern music radio, but I doubt Drake (who died in 2008) would recognize or approve of what music radio is today.
I give zero fucks about any of this.

TBT #1980 Parents bought me my first radio in 1979, I immediately tuned in to #Detroit's #WDRQ and #CKLW and this is what I heard. IMHO It's not #YMO's finest moment, but for many of us this is where it all started. 🎶 🇯🇵 ❤️ #RyuichiSakamoto #YukihiroTakahashi #HaruomiHosono #YellowMagicOrchestra

Fascinating. May I ask where you gleaned this history from, in case someone seeing it would like to dig into the topic as well?

Story in caption. Week 44 - Summoning Starter Pack
What an adventure the last weeks have been! I spend some more time spying on the other world. I observed water flies hatch from the eggs and how they brought back the water balance between our realms. Indeed, as the water returned to them, the floodings on Almaos receded. I needed some city life after the previous adventures, so I returned to my hometown, the capital Monasteria. I looked forward to some rest. Yet, what did I find in my mail? A free sample subscription for the newest mail based course ‘Summoning 101’ from my contacts at Dungeon Corp, leading supplier for dungeon keepers! It even included a ‘Summoning Starter Pack’! According to the package insert, it had everything an absolute novice needed to safely learn basic summoning skills. Inside, I found some strange wooden construction, which could be unfolded to form the basic pentagram. A circular, pre-written piece of fire-resistant cloth contained the spell runes. I respect their concern for my safety, yet I think they applied the principles of safe design way too rigorously when making the candles fire resistant, too. And they had sealed all those exciting vials so perfectly that I had yet to find a way to open them.
