IN WHAT WE LEAVE BEHIND - LIF P3 | 13/12/23
“All good art is political! There is none that isn’t. And the ones that try hard not to be political are political by saying, ‘We love the status quo.’ The best art is political and you ought to be able to make it unquestionably political and irrevocably beautiful at the same time.”
― Toni Morrison
Hi so, this is where it's at. I will be linking the piece itself in my reblog - this original post will in turn be linked in the upload on ao3 as I'll be giving some additional context to my decisions for this one. I'm trying my best here and I hope my intentions and their outcome are made clearer with this. Key to note that aside from familial or relational terms of address or something specific to culture, every single word of prose and more importantly, dialogue, from all characters, has been done in the English language. My track record with writing for the Manzoors in particular and aiming to remain true to their characterisations, their pride, integrity and all the attached connotations, I've avoided English for them.
However, I could not afford anything getting lost and/or worse, mistranslated. The shameful instance of Palestinian children holding their own press conference in ENGLISH and still not being respected for their humanity, their lives seen as "worthy" literally haunts me. How it doesn't affect let alone haunt those with all the power is truly beyond me.
The overarching matter is of the collective fight for, well, liberation. Liberation is the end, unchanging goal. For all people. I was startled and appreciative of what was shown in E5 with regards to Saba's speech (shown just after the title cards) in my first watch but it may as well have body slammed me in light of everything that continues to happen especially since early October. And just to reiterate, none of this was triggered on and from 07.10, this has been endured across generations, decades and so sharply accelerated and funded, encouraged and bolstered in these past weeks.
So to realise that the production, brainstorming and writing, the filming of that scene in particular in this first season of Cla$$ has been years in the making only adds more necessary weight to this. In my understanding, there is no scope of a false equivalency or "Kashmir and Palestine cannot actually be compared". You realise that this cannot be so the minute you recognise that Kashmir has been in the same time frame, enduring all that they have. The steadfast, staunch solidarity of the Kashmiri people to the Palestinian struggle has been stifled by their occupiers as of late.
"We are each other's harvest:
we are each others' business:
we are each other's magnitude and bond."
― Gwendolyn Brooks
Saba is the only Muslim student in her class. Even in the event of her not being the only Muslim student, she is also someone who chooses to cover her hair. There are multiple reminders of how she holds on to her truth but does not compromise with her respect. She is forced to concede at a cost. The writers have made several choices in this adaptation, in depicting their characters as they have. To make the Manzoors proudly Kashmiri Muslim carries additional, different connotations to the Manzoors being from Aligarh. To have remained true to the base guidelines of adaptation, Dhruv and Faruq's faiths have to be different. Its place in urban, Delhi, Indian society is further different. Veer's attitude, Yashika's statement in E1, everything is deliberate.
My intrigue and concern sits in the fact that now that we have all these characters, their prejudices and pride respectfully, what on Earth can they do with them? Will they do anything? Overwrite themselves? If so, how? This show streams on Netflix. On Netflix India. I needn't elucidate on the constraints this presents with regards to the matter of censorship.
Thus:
Firstly, my choice to have the album "Land of Gold" (2016) by Anoushka Shankar form the foundation and become the vessel for this piece. From Shankar herself, "encapsulating the central message of Land of Gold as the recognition of the resilience of the human spirit and of our capacity to find the place where enduring hope resides."
This series of 'webisodes' for this album describe the foregrounding of the female voice in the tracks themselves (production and composition involved male professionals. Shankar's former spouse, director Joe Wright was instrumental in emphasising the vision of these tracks as well) and I have compiled the playlist to reflect this. Hozier's collaboration, for example, with the formidable, practically indomitable Mavis Staples, is literally called Nina Cried Power, paying tribute to Nina Simone. I have kept the body of this piece in Saba's voice, her perspective throughout. She is bookended by people closest to this section of the narrative but she expresses her logic behind what we see in E5. Similarly, the album itself is uninterrupted in my playlist. Shankar and her collaborators were aiming for a cohesive sound and I hope my piece echoes this in some way.
I first finalised Land of Gold as Saba's... one... for her LIF piece back in May, shortly after I'd returned from India, smack bang in the middle of a period of immense continued grief and strife. My life continued to distress me and we're now in December. I believe I'd thought to just have the titular song, actually, at the time. And hence, I would've had the lyrics in Saba's piece guide it, like Faruq and Yashika's pieces do. Then, of course, we have, well, the current context. And that many tracks are literally instrumental - so the question became, what does Shankar intend to communicate and how do I interpret it and transpose it?

Saba's own dialogues, each word choice in the scene in E5 was thus my framework. And I expanded this in all directions as systematically, clearly and with as much integrity as I could put into this.
Secondly, the unfortunate coincidence of Saba Manzoor being selected for the MUN. Especially now, we have unfortunately had to witness the sheer uselessness of the UN and the overwhelming influence of the American vote. And the impact of the veto concept. Over and over in history. Yet, I had to stick to canon. However, I cannot and will not disguise that this is my most blatant piece till date, How can it not be? The boundary between my voice and Saba's is incredibly blurred and I cannot be apologetic for it. All views expressed in this piece are mine and I take responsibility for what I have communicated in 10280 words.

"You will know your task is almost complete when you realise that your body might not outlive your coloniser, but at least your stitching will."
― Bayan Fares
Thirdly, at I think E6, things deteriorate rapidly. She is made aware by her brother of the state of the sales. She looks Vandana in the eye and is proud of her family business, despite being threatened with the "unnees - bees" thing. Her family is called into that ghoulish school, forced to "confess" to their Kashmiri origins, and defend their upbringing and children's characters'. This whole series of events and what continues to happen sits in contrast to some of Saba's beliefs. But as yet, we are in E3 - 5 in this piece. Yet, I operate with the narrative insight that she of course, does not have.
I hope it is reflected here.
In Palestine, and protests in support of Palestine, the integration of the keffiyeh, their fabrics, foods and language is integral to their liberation.
Also, "music has the power to speak to the soul".
My series is called "life's infusing force" and I truly believe that music is that. The reblog with the piece link has a required explanation of some Saba - specific choices but in broader strokes, I have chosen these points to be made here. I may have missed some points but I honestly can't figure out what, things are a bit scattered right now!
Lastly, owing to canon, I have spoken only of Palestine but of course, it bears repeating always, that none of us are free until all of us are free. Liberation for one is liberation for all.
"I believe that the art we create has a message, intentional or not. I will no longer be dismissive of the statements we make. In making art, we convey our humanity. Which cannot help but be political."
― Ruth Sack

Did I just imagine Class getting renewed for season 2? Did that happen?? Was the show even real??? At this point I’m inclined to think maybe “Indian version of Elite” was just a fever dream a bunch of us shared 🫠

Okay where do I even start?? Such a beautifully portrayed relationship that leaves you craving for more in S2! Veer with Yashika was 'Veer Ahuja' the heir of Ahuja Properties but with Saba, he's Veer, just Veer. He's that Veer who doesn't mind going to a garbage dump eating Kulfi as long as he's with her. He's that Veer who finds Saba's hesitation when he kisses her cute ! He absolutely can't take his eyes off her and wipe away that little smile while talking to her.. All this while with Yashika, he's status oriented considering she's also on the same financial level plus their parents approve. He's never felt what intimacy is until that night in the swiming pool with Saba. He never knew how addictive a mere caress could be until she does that and boy he doesn't want her to stop... Yashika and Veer never loved each other and how would they anyway with status money and parents interfering constantly? It was always a relationship of convenience. He didn't call Yashika for comfort while visiting jail for his dad. He knew Saba was his go to person. The defeated look in Veer's eyes when he realizes the utter disappointment Saba felt watching him beat those people blue is when he knows she is all that will ever matter. Her silence mattered. Her walking away mattered.... all in all I'll always ship Veer and Saba because they need each other! Kudos to Zeyn and Madhyama for bringing them to life so effortlessly! I sincerely hope they don't do them dirty like they did Guzman and Nadia

Heyy love your account. Would love your take on Veer and Sabe from Class. What does she like about him? What romantic scene do you want to see them do in season 2? Hope you can answer. Lots of love - Ann
Wow where to even start? Chaos meets grace is probably the jist of them isn’t it? We all know opposites attract and it’s always a hook point in many shows but it’s done so well in Class. There’s tropes all over the place but it’s all the ones we love and the chemistry just flows seamlessly. I love loved LOVED Guzman and Nadia in Elite so I was not expecting to love Veer and Saba so much but I did ! Granted they’re not as fleshed out as the Spanish counterpart but just the show is so desi, the local music vibes and characters who are so relatable and real and who we as kids have seen around us, kind of makes Class much closer to my heart than Elite will ever be. It’s darker and more nuanced. The color palette, the cinematography, it’s just so unique and it just adds layers to the show and couples as a whole. While Guzman and Nadia date on fairytale streets of Spain, Veer and saba have dates in the junkyard surrounded by mud, demolition, reconstruction, public eyes and scrutiny and if that’s not symbolic of their uncertain future I don’t know what is.
Lol I guess saba sees in Veer what we all see in him. The subversion of expectations from someone like him. He’s an asshole with everyone else but with her he’s soft, gentle, caring. He’s an entitled brat but he’s also apparently a gentleman? Who won’t take advantage of a situation. That touches her. His genuine concern for the well being of his trouble maker sister. Saba, as we know, can relate lol. Faruq is a handful too. The way Veer fucks up massively but then has the courage to publicly apologize. He’s confronted her dad twice , once to apologize and once to fight her case to stay in school. A girls gotta melt at that. Him not resting until he has her apology. Despite failing many times lol. His self insight that comes slow but does come eventually lol. His determination to do better despite his self destructive tendencies. He’s a work in progress for sure, but there’s a lot of lovable things about him. His loyalty and protectiveness another one. The list goes on… which is probably why he has that ugly temper. Coz otherwise Veer is basically a privileged arrogant teddy bear tbh lol.
Nadia and Guzman had so many great moments in season 2 ugh. The first time she dresses up at the club and he can’t keep his eyes off of her. Their first kiss. Their first time ahem ahem… that locker room scene? Lol if that happens in Class I would just die ❤️👌 But one of my favorite moments is also which comes later when Guzman tries to help out Nadia and gets employed with his dad to pitch in the workload so Nadia can study lol. Imagine Veer working for Saba’s dad so saba gets more time to study lol. Wouldn’t that be a treat to watch ! Haha. Also jealous Guzman was *chef’s kiss* so I bet Veer can do it even better if given the chance. That would be so so fun to watch.
Thanks for asking ! I’m obsessed with this show and them :) What about you? What would you like to see with them?
#netflix class#class#cla$$#veer ahuja#saba manzoor#veer x saba#all I need now is for them to start season 2 production. and filming already !

frozen in time
Lando Norris x Amelie Dayman
Summary: Lando and friends react to Drive to Survive with their usual playful banter. However, when they hit a scene featuring Lando and Amelie from Season 3, the mood shifts dramatically.
Wordcount: 1.0 k
Warnings: none
full masterlist // request over here!
February 10th, 2023 - London, United Kingdom
The dimly lit studio was alive with the buzz of friendly banter and the occasional bursts of laughter. Lando sat on a well-worn couch between Max Fewtrell and Ria Bish, the three of them clad in Quadrant merch as cameras captured their every reaction for the latest YouTube video. The premise was simple: reacting to Drive to Survive. The execution? Pure chaos.
Ria was already mid-rant about something ridiculous in Season 2. —Why does it feel like they add extra dramatic music when nothing's even happening? I swear, it’s like someone sneezes, and suddenly it’s DUN DUN DUN.—
Max laughed, nearly spilling the energy drink he’d been nursing. —I mean, that’s the whole point, isn’t it? Make it feel like everyone’s life is constantly hanging in the balance.—
Lando grinned, leaning back and making himself comfortable. —It’s all a bit over the top, yeah, but it’s entertaining. And hey, at least I don’t look like a total idiot in this season.—
Ria raised a skeptical brow. —Not yet, you mean.—
The trio continued to watch, trading jabs and comments about the onscreen antics. Clips of intense rivalries, over-exaggerated voiceovers, and behind-the-scenes moments filled the laptop screen. They’d started with Season 1 and were working their way through highlights, jumping around episodes and reacting to iconic moments.
Everything was going smoothly. Until it wasn’t.
They clicked into a random episode from Season 3. The first few minutes were harmless enough—a dramatic montage of crashes and podium celebrations—but then the screen shifted to a familiar scene from the paddock.
Lando and Amelie.
The clip wasn’t long, but it was enough to make time feel like it had slowed to a crawl. Onscreen, Lando and Amelie were caught by Netflix’s cameras in the middle of a lighthearted moment. They were walking through the paddock together, laughing like kids sharing a secret. Amelie playfully shoved Lando, who responded by grabbing her wrist and twirling her in an exaggerated dance move. The flirty energy between them was undeniable, their smiles so wide it was hard to believe anything could ever break them.
For a second, Lando froze. His breath hitched, his face going pale. It was as if someone had sucker-punched him out of nowhere. The easygoing banter he’d been throwing around moments ago was gone, replaced by a heavy silence.
Max, who was mid-sip of his drink, noticed the shift immediately. His eyes darted to Lando, then back to the screen, and then back to Lando again. The tension in the air was palpable.
—Uh...— Max began awkwardly, glancing at Ria, who looked equally puzzled by the sudden change in atmosphere. —Maybe we skip this one?—
Max reached for the laptop without waiting for an answer, quickly clicking to a different episode as if that would erase what they’d just seen. The room was silent except for the faint hum of the laptop’s fan, the laughter and chaos of moments before evaporating like smoke.
Ria glanced at Lando, her brow furrowing. She could sense something was off, but she didn’t press. Instead, she leaned into her usual sarcastic demeanor, hoping to lighten the mood. —Wow, they really know how to milk the drama, huh? I mean, that whole twirl thing? Practically Shakespearean.—
Lando forced a chuckle, but it was hollow, his eyes glued to a spot on the wall behind the laptop. —Yeah, something like that,— he mumbled, his voice uncharacteristically quiet.
Max shot Ria a quick look, silently telling her to drop it. He shifted in his seat, trying to steer the conversation back on track. —Anyway, uh, what’s next? Oh, remember that bit where Kimi says like two words, and everyone loses their minds? Classic.—
Ria played along, laughing exaggeratedly. —Oh, the man’s a poet. 'Leave me alone, I know what I’m doing'? That’s basically the F1 version of 'to be or not to be.'—
Max snorted, and the two of them kept the chatter going, their energy intentionally over the top to cover the awkwardness. Lando, however, stayed quiet, his mind elsewhere.
He couldn’t stop replaying the scene in his head. That moment with Amelie, so simple and carefree, felt like it belonged to another lifetime. Seeing it now, years later, it hit him like a tidal wave. The laughter, the ease between them—it was a stark reminder of what they’d had, and more importantly, what they’d lost.
Max’s voice pulled him out of his thoughts. —Lando, you good, mate?—
Lando blinked, realizing both Max and Ria were looking at him now. He plastered on a smile, the kind he used for cameras and fans, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. —Yeah, I’m fine. Just zoned out for a second.—
Ria didn’t buy it, but she let it slide, leaning back into the couch with a shrug. —Well, wake up, Sleeping Beauty. We’ve got a video to finish, and the fans are going to want your expert commentary.—
Lando nodded, forcing himself to focus on the screen as Max started the next episode. But no matter how hard he tried, his thoughts kept drifting back to Amelie.
The laughter on the screen. The way she’d smiled at him. And the aching realization that nothing about it was coming back.

Hai fatto qualche sogno? Hai dormito bene? Cosa mangiamo per colazione? Che programmi hai per oggi?
E se siamo off entrambe?
Ovviamente siamo tutti gasati.
Life is good
