What's an obscure piece of media you wish more people knew about?

hi! I'm honestly so bad at judging what's obscure and what's not. In high school, I genuinely thought my music taste was alternative because I was the only person in my group of friends who listened to the Jonas Brothers. so idk if this is obscure media but it's media I love that I wish I could talk to people more about:

Some Girls (2012-14) - this sitcom series about 4 high school besties who live around the same housing estate was EVERYTHING to me. think Derry Girls/Sex Education but in the early 2010s with working class poc. I still quote this show at least once a week and miss it dearly even tho it ended exactly as it should!!

While The Men Are Away (2023-?) - lesbian period drama comedy about a bunch of Australian lesbians on the WW2 homefront in regional Australia. Beautifully horny show that also has STUNNING representation of immigrant and Indigenous experiences of the time.

Clarice (2020) - silence of the lambs sequel series that follows Clarice Sterling on a case 2 years after her encounter with Hannibal Lector. so sad this was cancelled but it's still a great season of tv!

The Underground Railroad (2021) - limited series on Amazon Prime about the Underground Railroad. Tw for literally everything, BUT it's directed by Moonlight director Barry Jenkins and his hands down some of the most beautiful TV I've ever seen.

The Silent Sea (2020) - limited series on Netflix about some astronauts sent to a mining station on the moon where something has infected all the crew.

The OA (2016-18) - difficult to describe this show but it's everything to me. theeeeee show about multiverses. Ahead of its time, gone too soon 💔

But 2 genuinely obscure pieces of media I think people should watch, especially rn, are Salt of this Sea (a film about a Palestinian-American woman heisting an Israeli bank to get her grandfather's money back) and the 2019 sci-fi short film In Vitro about an elderly Palestinian woman in an underground bunker trying to pass on why she's here to another Palestinian woman but neither can remember.

Medici Thoughts

Okay first things first, abuse its bad. Don't condone it.

So I don't agree with Lorenzo hitting Piero. Like it actually shocked me and I'm surprised Clarice didn't come back to live and hand her husband his ass right then and there for what he did.

While I don't agree with it, and it honestly...felt rather out of character for Lorenzo, also historically he had a good relationship with his kids

BUT I do see why the writers put it in, because I think it represents a lot of things.

1: It represents how lost Lorenzo is without Clarice. Like, the dude was bordering on losing it while she was still alive and her death really pushed him over the edge. He lost his way, he lost himself. He felt like an animal in a trap because he knows he's dying. The thing is, is that Clarice was supposed to survive HIM, not the other way around. Lorenzo would leave the bank and his family to her, probably one of the last people he trusts. But then she died. So he is not only mourning her but he is also panicking cause now he has to adjust his plans cause now when he dies he's gonna be leaving his children in charge of a broken Florence with no protection. He's panicking, he's freaking out and his son just did something to stop his plans, in his view to protect his family.

2: I think it shows just how much Lorenzo has changed over the years, the Pazzi Conspiracy hardened him. Lorenzo de Medici died that day, Lorenzo the Magnificent was all the remained. Lorenzo has basically been in fight or flight mode for the last several years and the dude is tired. He's done and he's losing it. (not en excuse)

3: I think it shows that in the end Lorenzo becomes something so much worse than any of his precedseeors. Worse than Giovanni, Cosimo and Piero. He was the hope and the light of the family. Now he has turned into something darker. He wanted to be better than those before him and instead he turned into something so much worse.

the grandson of cosimo il vecchio , lorenzo has lived with the burden of a legacy upon his shoulders since he was just an infant.

presented in a princely manner to the citizens of florence when he was a child , the medici placed all their hopes on lorenzo leading the house in the future.

cosimo favoured lorenzo over his own son piero , when it came to the leadership of the medici bank and so lorenzo has always known what's expected of him.

whilst he's a rather well known patron of the arts - he has finished less buildings than his grandfather.

lorenzo was never friends with francesco de'pazzi. their rivalry , much like cosimo and rinaldo albizzi's in the show , has existed since childhood.

charismatic from a young age , lorenzo has often used his wits and charm to get himself out of lethal situations , such as an attempted ambush on his father piero's life. riding ahead of piero , due to suspecting an attack - lorenzo found himself confronted and managed to talk his way out of it.

whilst his marriage to clarice is political , and they have an arrangement that allows both to have lovers , he does have a fondness , perhaps even a love for her. whilst not always unified in their children's education , he relies heavily on clarice for advice , valuing her opinion just as piero had valued lucrezia's.

he is not above underhanded deals and actions , when it comes to preserving both florence and his families best interests.

he is the defacto ruler of florence as his father was before him , and his grandfather.

like his father and grandfather , lorenzo suffers from gout and is often in chronic pain. this is tied to his depression , which only got worse after the attempt on his own life , and the assassination of his brother giuliano.

fond of artists , lorenzo often spends time in workshops ( especially that of leonardo da vinci ).

Princess Luna slitted her eyes and laid her ears back as she asked in a tone too mild to be safe for any that her anger was directed to, “Chest lineament and a day off at half pay for a colt with pneumonia? Rent up twenty bits put you at a hardship? Impre Sario was that rude to you both?”

Both Foamy and Clarice nodded. “That's right, Your Highness.”

Suddenly Celestia broke out in a chuckle as she commented, “That explains why he hasn't put on any ballets except The Singing Swan, The Dance of the Sweet Peach Breezy and the Awakening of the Dragon! They are all not only Public Domain, they are widely used as recital pieces for ballet schools! Every dancer knows them!”

Luna, however, was boring in on a different issue entirely! “Foamy, I got your request and gave Impre a benefice for two weeks off at full pay and for up to ten thousand gold in horsepital expenses with an extention if needed. Both were cashed at EQNB with signatures that matched the sample cards.

“Clarice, I have been paying top scale by benefice, which, like Foamy's were all signed to match the sample cards, as required when cashing Royal Benefices.”

Foamy snorted, “Afraid not, Your Highness. Impre always gave us pay packets with coins. None of the troupe, stage hands, set builders or painters, ever saw a benefice. Frankly, we don't trust EQNB at all. We do all of our banking here at Ponyville Trust and Loan. With Grumpy Goat on the Board of Directors, we know that it is dead honest!”

Princess Twilight snickered, “Dead Honest about perfectly describes Grumpeter! Good choice for banking too! All of the Principality banking is done there at PTL. PTL's got over ten times more in liquid assets than EQNB. That's why this Principality is so prosperous.”

Kin added to the mix a bit by offering, “What Foamy and Clarice just told you guys is spot on.”

Foamy and Clarice were not to be deterred from their initial goal, “Now that that's covered, about these dances! Kin, if you can do to us what you did to them,” she pointed at AJ, Rarity and Pinkie, “it would really help us to score these dances. We want to learn to choreograph them properly.

“We really like Princess Twilight's suggestion. It will let us add these dynamite dances to the show without having to work up a new main stage dance and sets. We only need to hang backrop and wings curtains that I know that we already have.”

Pinkie, to call attention, made a metalic BURR by doing a bust shimmy in her coin decorated dancing bra, and stated flatly, “We need Red and Sweet Lawn in on this. I'll bet that they could do backdrops that will really make the dancers stand out! Candy might have some good ideas too! You guys have seen her genius at costume design! I'd lay money on her fixing up something in these dances that would work for pegassi!”

That was when Twilight's mirror sounded a warbling tone!

“What is it, Captain Ranbow Dash?”

“We have some lard butt who claims to be from Canterlot Castle and in charge of the gala! He set off alarms trying to open the locked stage doors! He wants to dump all of Pinkie's scenery into the street to make room for HIS scenery that is on the train coming from Canterlot. He claims that the show will be a ballet called 'The Singing Swan'!”

Celestia chuckled, “Speaking of evil will draw it to you!”

Princess Luna interrupted, “Rainbow, this is Luna. If that lard butt is named Impre Sario, put him on!”

A dusty orange unicorn came to the mirror. He snapped, “Whatever your business, make it quick! I have only a few days to get this fundraiser gala organized!”

“Impre! Look at who you are talking to! YOU have no part in this show!”

“I don't care if you are this pipsqueek local so called Princess! My authority is directly from the Princesses Celestia and Luna! They outrank everypony in this kingdom! I AM IN CHARGE HERE.”

“I am afraid not, Impre. By the Joint Royal Order of Princess Luna, Princess Celestia and Princess Twilight Sparkle, you are removed from ALL responsibility connected to any show or event whatsoever.

“Guard Captain Rainbow Dash, by the authority just referred to, place Impre Sario under Royal Arrest. Cap his horn and put him into a cell until it shall be our Joint Pleasure to see to his case. For a holding charge, put embezzlement of 10,500 golden bits and forgery of a Royal Benefice for personal gain.”

The pony in the mirror was utterly aghast! “You can't do this! I have served you for years!”

Celestia put her horn into the conversation, “We are aware of that, Impre. We are putting the RIS on your case this very morning. While we were speaking to friends recently, I had occasion to look at Foamy's signature card at EQNB. It is a right handed signature. The problem is simple. Foamy is LEFT handed. The Royal Benefice that was cashed for her sick foal Barrel Racer's horsepitalization matched the card. She did not get the money. Luna has verified that by Bridge of Dream.

“If you do not cooperate in your arrest, our Joint Order is for you to be slain where you stand. All clear? No need to like it. Just cooperate or die.”

Foamy, overhearing the conversation was dropjawed! “Kill Impe! I know that he's a jerk, but death?”

Luna smiled but there appeared to be literal fire in her eyes! “Foamy, dear, what he did to you was only the tiniest tip of a very big iceberg. We won't know until the Royal Intelligence Service report is done, but it appears that he was hijacking around a half to two thirds of the ENTIRE Royal Ballet budget. There may be more besides. He did many fundraising events.”

Clarice Beckett (Australian painter) 1887 - 1935

Clarice Majoribanks Beckett was an Australian Tonalist painter whose works are featured in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of South Australia.

Beckett was born in Casterton, Victoria, the daughter of Joseph Clifden Beckett (ca. 1852-1936), a bank manager, and his wife Elizabeth Kate, née Brown (ca. 1855-1934). Her grandfather was John Brown, a Scottish master builder who had designed and built Como House and its gardens in South Yarra, Victoria.

Clarice was a boarder at Queen's College, Ballarat until 1903, before spending a year at Melbourne Church of England Girls' Grammar School. She showed artistic ability, and after leaving school took private lessons in charcoal drawing at Ballarat. In 1914 she went to Melbourne's National Gallery School, completing three years of study under Frederick McCubbin before continuing her studies under Max Meldrum, whose controversial theories became a pivotal factor in her own art practice.

In 1919 her parents moved from Bendigo to the Melbourne bayside suburb of Beaumaris and, with their health failing, Beckett assumed household responsibilities that virtually dictated the structure of the rest of her life, severely limiting her artistic endeavour. Beckett could only go out during the dawn and dusk to paint as most of her day was spent caring for them.

Beckett is recognised as one of Australia's most important modernist artists. Despite a talent for portraiture and a keen public appreciation for her still lifes, Beckett preferred the solo, outdoor process of painting landscapes. She relentlessly painted sea and beachscapes, rural and suburban scenes, often enveloped in the atmospheric effects of early mornings or evening. Her subjects were often drawn from the Beaumaris area, where she lived for the latter part of her life. She was one of the first of her group to use a painting trolley, or mobile easel to make it easier to paint outdoors in different locations.

Max Meldrum once stated, "There would never be a great woman artist and there never had been. Woman had not the capacity to be alone". It is believed this reflects the overall opinion of the period; Beckett was continually put down by the critics and sold little in her lifetime.

While painting the wild sea off Beaumaris during a big storm in 1935, Beckett developed pneumonia and died four days later in a hospital at Sandringham. She was buried in the Cheltenham Memorial Park (Wangara Road) not far from another noted female artist, Mary Vale. She was only 48 when she died, the year after her mother's death.

Minette watches Medici, part 15 (Betrayal)

- This is probably going to be a short one, because I don’t have much to complain about this episode? Like, the whole thing is questionable from the historical perspective and has a lot of problems carried over from the previous episodes, but overall the buildup to the Pazzi plot kinda slaps? Who knows, maybe I’ll fill this one with compliments instead.

- First off, one thing I forgot to mention in the previous entry: the decision to tie Galeazzo’s murder to the Pazzi conspiracy. And I mean, those two things were related, in that they were both attempts to remove an autocratic ruler and reinstate the old semi-oligarchical order, but they weren’t literally perpetuated by the same people. With that said, as far as deviations from history go, this is one of the better ones, because it fits very well into the main plot. Like, if they are going to disregard the history completely, they might as well give us something this good.

- Look, I hate to say this, because she was a great gal and shit, but... They should’ve killed Simonetta sooner. I don’t hate some of the things they were trying to do with Giuliano here, like him being distracted by women, wine and general fucking around, untill he falls in love with a girl who inspires him to take his responsibilities more seriously even after she dies. But like... The whole thing was too little too late. Instead we spend most of Simonetta and Giuliano’s time together with their dumb courtship and even dumber drama with her husband and Sandro.

- Also, the whole “Sandro loves her as an object of artistic adoration, while Giuliano loves her as an actual person” would be a great angle to take if it wasn’t for the fact that a) again, too little too late; b) if Giuliano really loved or at least respected her as an actual person, he would’ve left her alone at the first “get lost” and none of this drama would happen. These two had no fucking chemistry, but honestly that’s to be expected, I’ve yet to see a tsundere girl x presumptuous fuckboy pairing that isn’t pure trash. This is the kind of couple that gives enemies to lovers trope a bad name.

- Another thing that was too little too late? The whole thing with Giuliano finding his place as the hard first of the bank, while Lorenzo is the brain and friendly face. I don’t love either of them as characters, but they have a solid dynamic this show refuses to play on for some reason.

- Also let me clown a little on the whitewashing of Sixtus IV., like, I get that The Borgias did the whole “morally ambiguous pope” thing sooner and better, but come the fuck on. Also was his cardinal nephew supposed to be part of the conspiracy, because IRL he very much was...

- Whitewashing of the Medici family is bearing some really nasty fruits here in the form of tragic flattening of the Pazzi conspiracy. Like, where are my liberatores vibes? The Caesar references?! Halooo??? THIS SHIT COULD’VE BEEN SO POIGNANT ASFJG...

- The flashback was... Eh? Contessina’s death had me rolling my eyes, which - you know you’ve fucked up when a best girl is literally dying and my reacting is a fucking eyeroll. At the same time, we finally got some glimpses of an alternate timeline where Francesco de’ Pazzi had a decent characterization. His pride, his penchant for violence, his contentious relationship with his uncle... This dude could’ve been so interesting with some better writing! As it is, my interest in him as a character lives off of scraps and his mighty cheekbones. Ugh.

- But, I cannot emphasize this enough, despite all of my minor complaints, this was a fucking great episode! The plot was well-thought out, fast paced, the chase at the beginning kicked ass, the twists and turns of the plot were exciting, yet made perfect sense, and Carlo, oh my poor sweet Carlo, my heart goes out to you... Also my girls Clarice and Mamma Lucrezia, god how I love them. Like, so much for my conviction that I’ll end this show without any new blorbos. It’s just that I am better at complaining than praising, sorry about that.

Banks made it far too easy, to needle him. They had 'worked' alongside each other long enough now that Marisol could tell when the young man was doing his best not to fly off the handle. Maybe it was because she could run and tell Ria whenever he got too mean? Was that a thing Marisol had done in the past? Oh, heck yes she did! What good was it to have a sister as his bestie if she couldn't run and cry wolf when she wanted?

Listen, she just liked to tease the two of them. Reality was, Marisol cared for them both and enjoyed nothing more than to insert herself into their business all the time.

"It's not my fault your head is so big," Marisol was finally able to stop her mad giggling and breathe. "Oh, you should see your face right now.." She flashed the younger an easy smile. "But now that I have your attention..." Marisol waved a couple of fingers at him as she settled back in front of the fan and turned her face towards it so her voice was modulated, "Hello, Clarice." The laughter that followed sounded just as mechanical.

As much as he complained about the shop, there were days where he didn't have to do anything and got paid for it. It helped to remove some of the self doubt and hiding that he'd been going through lately. If no one came into the store, then he didn't have to face anyone that was outside the store either. No one other than the only other employee working the shift with him.

He hadn't been paying attention to them, hovering elsewhere near a fan to at least try to look like he wasn't slowly melting from the lack of air conditioning in the place. It was all thanks to the place being trashed during the festival, which had been somewhat his fault, but he kept his lips zipped and fixed what he could, when he could. That's when it felt like something bit him no the side of his face, just above the ear as he smacked at the sharp sensation to only see a rubber band fall to the floor. And a witch smiling over at him.

"You know, normal people say hey. Or hello. Or wave when they want someone else's attention. They do not shoot them in the face because they are bored," he spoke slowly, trying not to let his temper get the best of him as he picked up the rubber band before tossing it into the small garage bin by the door.

Hii, i would be very happy to hear your opinion about this

in medici ep5 of s2 it was implied that giuliano was mad that lorenzo didn't ask him to be his son's godfather, it's natural that giuliano is hurt since he's the baby's uncle while Francesco is a random outsider but then idk if he would be a good godfather since we saw he was quite carefree. He was literally late for piero's christening and we also didn't see him bother to come to see the baby while we saw both bianca and Francesco on screen with the baby after the christening. So i doubt if he was choosen to be the godfather would he be a responsible one? Given how carefree he was i doubt if situation was reversed, he would have raised piero as responsibly and affectionately as lorenzo has raised guilio. But then he actually in a way sacrificed his life for lorenzo so maybe he would be worthy if given a chance but i am not sure. What do you think?

Sorry this took me so long to answer lol, I had a lot of thoughts about this and had to make sure not to go off on a tangent lol

Okay, so yes, in ep 5 of season 2, its implied that Giuliano is hurt, and feeling left out, although I don't think it is specifically about Francesco being Piero's godfather and not him. I think that is probably a part of it, but I think it is more, that Lorenzo brought Francesco into the Medici family and wanted to work closely with him and the Pazzi bank to ensure everyone got along, and I imagine that kinda of made Giuliano feel left out, Lorenzo can also be an idjit and probably treated Francesco more like a brother than a working partner, and didn't work very hard to keep Giuliano in the fold, but I don't think that small fall out between Giuliano and Lorenzo was completely Lorenzo's fault. Giuliano probably felt left out and went off to sulk and pulled away instead of trying to fix things.

Nah, I don't think Giuliano would have been a responsible Godfather, he was the younger son, and liked to enjoy himself and indulge, but he was never ready to be in charge of a child. Francesco on the other hand, wanted kids, and I think if things had gone differently Francesco would have been very involved in Piero's life. He would have taken the role of godfather seriously, whereas Giuliano might have just seen it as a title since he is Piero's uncle.

I also think Lorenzo wanted the making of Francesco, Piero's Godfather to be something to make Francesco feel more like family, and I don't think he did it to snub Giuliano. At this point in the series, Guliano had pulled away and wasn't really present.

I think if something had happened to Lorenzo and Clarice and Giuliano was left with Piero, Giuliano would rise to the occasion. Neither of the Medici sons is one to shrink from duties or responsibility. So Giuliano would have had some growing up to do and learning, but he would have raised Piero as his own like Lorenzo did for Giulo.

I also think, maybe on some level Lorenzo knew that Giuliano was younger, he wanted his freedom, he is the younger brother. Francesco is the older brother, he practically already was a father to Gugielmo, so yeah Francesco might have been a more obvious choice in that area.

But I don't think Lorenzo's choice to make Francesco godfather was supposed to snub Giuliano. It was to bring the families closer together, especially since Jacopo was a wild card, and I think Lorenzo genuinely wanted Francesco to be a part of their family. Francesco never had a core family growing up and I think Lorenzo knew that. And like I said, at this point Giuliano had pulled away so maybe there was some distance between the brothers and they were both going about that the wrong way. The Medici brothers are pretty but at times they can be pretty dumb lol

2017: Dark Dimension Homecoming: Clea has a disturbing dream. She later posts about not watching horror movies before bedtime. Quentin and Gabriel have the talk and it goes about as well as expected. Felicia and Kevin meet up for a dinner and discuss work, life and everything in between. Miles posts about how excited he is to be able to stream Star Trek in his dorms.

2018: Morningstar: Lorna is in charge of XFI, and Alex has some suggestions for her rules; Quentin posts his appreciation for Lorna’s rules in comparison to Hope’s. Topaz and Kurt have a really good heart-to-heart.
