I remember in high school a lot of english teachers would make us write down words that we didn't know when we were reading novels for class, but they would require at least a certain number of these words, so whenever I was reading I was forced to use some of my focus searching for words that I could believably pretend I didn't know for points.
And so now when I'm reading books for fun and I actually find a lot of words I don't know, I get a little bit annoyed. Cuz if it's this easy to find books that are actually challenging when I'm not even looking, why did teachers keep giving me books where I had to pretend that I, as a 17 year old, didn't know what "envy" or "resilient" meant.
#there are some complaints i have about class assignments where im like 'okay i understand that everyone is at a different level#and things that are easy for me are not necessary going to be easy for others'#but i swear to god some teachers will hand a classroom full of advanced english students a fucking Dick and Jane book#and go 'okay now write down 10-20 things that were confusing or challenging about this book to you personally :)'#2pm in the morning

One of my biggest pet peeves in media about teenagers is they never understand that the kids in euphoria and the kids in heartstopper go to the same school and sit next to each other in algebra class and bully their teachers together. and they’re friends
#it’s so stupid how shows are either ohhhh all teenagers have fucked up sex and do drugs we’re so edgy OR they don’t think about sex at all#in reality like 10 percent of the kids in your high school are having sex and going to parties and the rest of you. arent#and you are partners in English class and play music off your ipod in the gym lockers and one time you google abortion clinics together#both teenagers exist and they exist in the same context! high school!

voicevox humming might also be good for those looking weird metallic noisy vocal synths if they're willing to play with the unpredictability of it because i had akashi on the absolutely wrong range setting for this song and he started breaking down like faulty motor
#he shoulda been at like -10 or somewhere around there but he was at -6#breathier gentle voices+emotions are more effective in humming if you want this echoey metal scraping sound#so like akashi and nurse type t are pretty quiet. and ryuusei has a thousand emotion modes and half of them are whispery#also unrelated since this song has a bunch of glottal stops i decided to finally check if っ works as a phoneme#it does. i dont know why i wasnt sure. its a text-to-speech software primarily and that is. an important part of japanese speech LOL#but it does work in humming which is nice! also unrelated but i just found out the technical name for っ is sokuon#my japanese teachers always just the less fancy term chisai tsu or small tsu depending on language theyre speaking in the moment#its like how i didnt know what a cedilla was called in english for years. i learned about it in school first et en français its cédille#thats how i got a little sweet taste of basic linguistic concepts as a kid in general actually. through language learning classes#you learn a grammar thing for one language and ur like holy shit. what is that. where can i learn more. and then you start googling <3

I KNEW I WASN'T MAKING SHIT UP THINKING STUFF WAS WEIRDLY RELATED AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Reading the Táin in one of my classes unlocked an old memory of a song I used to listen to in the car with my dad from an Irish band, and I remember loving the song and my dad taking the time to tell me the basic gist of the song was about a field painted red (I was small, he had to tell me in a child friendly way). And y'know, the whole "you go to fight Cu Chulainn and the battlefields will be stained red" in the Táin, seems oddly familiar, right?
LO AND BEHOLD, THE SONG IS/BECAME PART OF AN ALBUM TELLING THE STORY OF THE TÁIN
#aza's trash#i cannot even begin to tell you how awesome this is to me#i took this class specifically to feel more connected to my irish-ness and look at me now feeling more connected to it#and remembering times when i felt more connected to it#also that story is so fucking wild i can't even begin to describe it#i love me some weird ass stories#like yeah sure they have a moral if you look (the whole point of an english major)#but also what in the fuck is going on here#best vibes for a story 10/10 no notes

i just finished writing this paper and i went to the email they sent me with the instructions to see the word limit and adjust mine, and it said it's 8k. i have 9k BUT if i don't count footnotes it goes down to 7,5K !!!!!
i have no idea if the 8k includes notes or not but i'm gonna submit it like it is lmao
#i'm obsessed with the fact i have 1.5k words of only footnotes#i did went a bit german with this one for no reason at all i just wanted to yap i guess#for those who don't know. in academia (at least in classics / ancient history) germans tend to write so many footnotes and so beefy than#i've come across various papers / chapters / translations where there's like. 10 lines of actual text and the rest of the page is just#footnotes#kinda iconic of them ngl. it's very funny cause i'll start reading a paper or a chapter of a book or whatever without seeing the author's#name. and i'll start seeing so many notes i go 'wait is the author german?' and 9 out of 10 times they are 😭😭😭#professors have actually mocked this or note this in class several times#in case you're curious#another quirks that depend on nationality is that statians have silly / quirky titles in their paper (incredibly unnecessary imo)#also for some reason they think a paper is a comedy sketch or something they try to be funny a bit too much#and brits are like. too snobbish but at the same time ruthless when attacking other academics#they're like the mean girls. every professor that taught me here in spain had a beef with british academics#also given the cultural hegemony of english their theories / views are usually the ones accepted by the general public#so when they're wrong or my professors don't agree they WILL trash them#but also something i've noticed by virtue of just going to different congresses#spaniards are super professional at them. not necessarily intimidating. but they take it seriously and want everything to be perfect#in hosting#italians are like midway between spaniards and brits. extremely friendly and chill but also professional#and then the brits are just like. whatever. they don't fucking care#it seems to me for them congresses are like socializing time they don't care about the presentations

font rant below cut - I think it's important
STOP USING TIMES NEW ROMAN (and other fonts with high thick/thin contrast) IN ACADEMIC SETTINGS/ANY LONG PARAGRAPHS
[pt] Stop using Times New Roman (and other fonts with high/thick/thin contrast) in academic settings/any long paragraphs [end pt]
I'm learning typography right now, and something that has been repeatedly said is that Times New Roman is not a good font for readability. (Note that readability is not the same as legibility. Readability aims to make a large section of body text easy to recognize and understand, while legibility applies to a specific word or phrase, usually a title or headline.) Times New Roman has a lot of thick/thin contrast, meaning that each letter is made up of both (very) thick and (very) thin lines. This causes more "visual clutter," as my teacher puts it, and makes the text less readable. It also affects dyslexia and visual impairments more than its low thick/thin contrast counterparts.
Times New Roman is also a serif font, meaning that it has the funny little things on the ends of letters, like this recreation of the Vogue font:
The funky things on the ends of the letters are serifs. These decorative lines, while pretty, make a font less readable. Serif fonts are best for headlines, titles, or small bursts of text. Sans serif (lit. "without serif") fonts don't have these funky decorations. By default, Tumblr uses a sans serif, Helvetica. Some of the themes use serif fonts, but default and dark mode use Helvetica. The lack of thick/thin contrast and distracting (albeit cool) serifs gives the brain less information to process, making words more recognizable. This helps people like me who are visually impaired. I'm not dyslexic, but I've heard that it can help dyslexic people as well.
In modern academia, there is no reason to be using Times New Roman for everything in existence. There is more to the readability equation, but this is just a rant on the funny hellsite. Helvetica and Ariel are no less "professional" than Garamond or Times New Roman, and the former two fonts make writing much more accessible than the latter two.
Also, Comic Sans is only annoying because it's overused in professional settings to make things seem more "fun."
#cardinal rambles#fonts & typography#readability#literature mentions#disability#accessibility#graphic design#typography#typography design#font design#text formatting#I wrote this because i can't read my book for english class#the font & size are terrible#oh yeah#use no smaller than 11pt font size for body text#10 and 9 are acceptable#but really hard to read in print

im stressing myself out thinking about the essay i have to write this week instead of sleeping so im just gonna leave this here for myself before i go to bed.
a 6 page essay on hamlet is nothing. last fall you had to write a 20 page epic about the meat industry for your final essay. this current essay could not possibly be more of a slog than that one was, even if you have to find random outside sources to prove your point. i promise writing an essay on a play thats not even a hundred pages long will be easier than whatever that was. its a work of fiction, its a lot easier to analyze that and pick it apart than to look at the real world and figure out how it works. you've done it before with the yellow wallpaper and frankenstein, you can do it again. also on the plus side this is your last english class you have to take. you'll be free from essay purgatory soon.
ok post over im going to bed
#i feel a little better now#i havent been able to relax as much as usual so far this weekend so this post will probably still be helpful tomorrow#or. well. in 8-10 hours when i wake up. since its past midnight rn#one last fuckass essay and im done with english classes...
