20 Questions for Fic Writers

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

53 total, technically 1 of those is under a different pseud because it's the only fic I ported from FF.net onto Ao3 and I used my FF username as the pseud for that reason.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 

Just checked and apparently it is 2,416,967 .... sooo that's totally normal right?!?!!

3. What fandoms do you write for?

I struggle to write for more than 1 fandom at a time so right now I'm pretty much only writing Shadowzel from BG3.

BUT the others I've written for are, in order of recency:

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? 

Pretty sure that they're all going to be Clexa but lemme go pull the list...

Yep, no surprises there. But actually my 6th is Choni: She Didn't Know It Then but seems like my older fics from the fandom that was probably the biggest I've been in have the most kudos, makes sense to me hehe!

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I try to respond to as many comments as I can while I'm posting. Unless I feel the urgent need to respond to a comment, I only respond when I'm at my desk about to update. So I don't usually respond once a fic is finished unless the comment really compels me to. This is simply a time and effort kinda situation, I read them in my email and they always make my day, and I'm always happy to respond on social media if anyone ever wants to chat about any of my fics!

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

The angstiest ending?! Uhhh I'm a happy ending girlie. I guess technically it's probably one of my Hosie oneshots in my A World Where I Was Yours series, just because it's my version of post canon of Legacies!

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

There are too many happy endings in my fics for me to decide aaahhhh. Ummmm. Maybe it's hard to breathe (when you're in the air) which is one of my favorite Hosie fics that I wrote?? but idk seriously they're all happy endings in terms of the pairing so it comes down to which characters in which fics had the happiest overall life situation and there are too many to think about it lol!

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I've gotten negative comments for sure but I dunno if I'd call it hate exactly. The negative comment that I remember the most was on a Choni fic and they complained that the characters were too OOC, and it was nooooot done constructively at all and someone else (possibly same person different guest user) piled on even more rudely... so that wasn't fun (and also yeah all my characters are kinda OOC because that's what happens when you write AU?)

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes, yes I do. I feel like it's fairly vanilla. I used to mark everything rated M before I was informed that perhaps I've been writing E smut without realizing it lmao. So now I rate new fics with smut as E.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I haven't ever posted any crossovers, but I did start one that was a Legacies/The Runaways crossover because of an idea that seriously amused me, but once I wrote the premise I got bored and stopped lol.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not a whole fic but back in my FF days someone took a Halloween Party chapter (wow I write those a lot actually, I'm not even a Halloween party girlie) and used it as a flashback on their Wattpad fic and someone kindly let me know and I had to message them to take it down.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? 

Yes! I had a few fics back on FF.net that were translated into French :) but the deal was that I wanted to post them because I wasn't comfy with someone else doing the posting of my ideas. And now I typically turn down offers of translation just because I'm less comfy with it now then I was when I was younger.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? 

I haven't, but I'd be open to doing so if it was for an idea I felt like me and the other author(s) were really vibing with!

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship? 

Impossible question. Whichever ship I'm currently obsessing over is my all-time favorite. Which would be Shadowzel rn. But probably in a few years I'll feel differently lol. I strongly feel that all the ships I've ever shipped are the best ever and I cannot choose a favorite.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Sooo many. I have a ton of Choni WIPs that I never finished, including one that got to like 20-30k words but just sits all dusty in its word folder. I once started a Part 3 to my Clexa travel fic (Come With Me linked earlier) that I couldn't get into but the vision was soooo cute. I also started a Part 3 to my Choni travel fic which also had a great vision but I'm just not as into Choni anymore so it feels hard to go back to now.

16. What are your writing strengths? 

I think I'm good at dialogue and characterization, those are my favorite parts of my own writing at least!

17. What are your writing weaknesses? 

Dude. I apparently cannot get enough of adverbs. I have to prune so many when I'm editing fics. Ugh. And I have some repetitive phrases that I also end up having to prune out.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? 

I've done it before with google translate and made modifications when people who spoke those languages corrected me haha. But it's not something I do often just because it hasn't really been super relevant to most of what I write.

19. First fandom you wrote for? 

Glee. It was Glee. I was 13. We don't need to talk about it.

20. Favourite fic you’ve written? 

My favorite?!!? It's always my latest fic, I pretty much always feel like the latest thing I'm working on is the best and so it's my favorite right now for sure. And that would be Reignited (Shadowzel).

I'm feeling jipped here. I saw all the amazing graphics and social media posts, family trees, gifs, references, casting, and whatever else you made for your clexa fic. Where is the gorgeous Kate and Yelena content for your million AUs. Give us moodboards, give us what the kids and the OCs look like, give us references for their houses, give us anything!

listen...........CFAU was ONE thing. there are literally 11 (!!! - yes, i counted tonight) ongoing kate x yelena aus right now. but just so you don't say i never gave you anythingggggg here is the laziest-done-in-literal-five-minutes references of k + y for like...FIVE of them lol. i didnt even bother with any of the period aus because im just not going to find references for all of them. i could definitely do victorian, royal, and maybe viking, but no way in hell am i going to find anything for gladiator, versailles, or black plague. i also didnt do the kids or any of the supporting characters because...again...five minutes and there's truly like a dozen kids in this handful of aus alone. if you bug me about it enough i might get around to it.

📖✨Shortkingvi's Fic Hall of Fame✨📖

Since I’ve been a regular fic reader since ~2011, I figure a list like this is long overdue. This is a (semi) comprehensive list of every fic that has irrevocably changed who I am as a person forever. Some of these may not be the most world-altering fic's you've ever read, but for some reason they have wormed their way into my heart and stuck with me since the first time I read them. So, in no particular order and across many fandoms, here are my all time top-10:

1. tin soldiers - idrilka (Marvel Cinematic Universe, rated T, Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes)

Do you need to know the source material? Yes.

this fic... what do i truly say about this one. i am a stucky bitch first and foremost and this is the absolute best of them. a direct companion to captain america: the winter soldier, this fic covers what the public opinion of cap, the plot of the movie, and his relationship with bucky was/is/might be. written as a collection of academic papers, social media posts, and book excerpts, this fic takes unique and unforgettable to a new level. 10/10 would recommend!

2. maybe it's just me - bleedtoloveher (The Hunger Games, rated M, Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark)

Do you need to know the source material? Yes, although you could get by knowing the general premise.

this is the first fic i ever remember reading (at like 13 or 14) and boy oh boy did it stick with me. i regularly go back to read this one because it's just... so pure and sweet. an AU where katniss and peeta have been best friends for years and peeta is the only one reaped. upon returning after winning the games, he and katniss must pretend to be in a relationship so that he can protect her from president snow, who is unhappy with peeta. i adore this fic, it's just so lovely.

3. meet me halfway to your heart - ariadnerue (Carmilla, rated T, Carmilla Karnstein/ Laura Hollis)

Do you need to know the source material? No.

i may or may not have a thing for the fake/pretend relationship trope. this one is a fic where carmilla and laura are best friends and the children of two A-list actors. after a pushy dude in a bar won't leave laura alone, she and carm pretend to be in a relationship. of course, the media catches wind of their supposed love and has a field day with it, forcing them to have to pretend they're in love to avoid ruining the release of their parents' new film. this one is so CUTE and a one-shot (albeit 22k words), so it's an easy, sweet read!

4. human interest - mad_lori (Brokeback Mountain, rated E, Ennis Del Mar/Jack Twist)

Do you need to know the source material? Yes, but techincally only the first hour or so, though i think you'd miss out on the catharsis of this by doing so.

no movie truly sticks with me and breaks my heart quite like brokeback, and after a particularly depressing rewatch last year, i stumbled upon this. originally written in 2006, this fic is an AU that imagines what might've happened if ennis had said yes to jack's proposition after ennis' divorce. they open up a cattle operation up in vermont and get their happily ever after. it's slice of life, it's real, it's sweet and cathartic. if you too have been personally victimized by this film, i recommend this more than anything else on this list. it's wonderful. there's a sequel fic that is technically unfinished, but it's 40 chapters and ends on a decent stopping point, so i think that's more than fine.

5. been lovin' you for quite some time - onemilliongoldstars (The 100, rated E, Clarke Griffin/Lexa)

Do you need to know the source material? No.

for some reason i am physically unable to read in canon clexa shit because it hurts too much, so this is an AU. FWB clarke and lexa find themselves spending christmas together and have to pretend they're strangers. it goes about as well as you'd think. read this as a wee baby gay and it means so much to me because of that. clexa truly is my greatest ship of all time, so you can imagine how much this one has stuck with me. an easy, quick, fun read with almost no angst.

6. United States v. Barnes, 617 F. Supp. 2d 143 (D.D.C. 2015) - fallingvoices, radialarch (Marvel Cinematic Universe, rated T, Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes)

Do you need to know the source material? Yes.

i didn't want to double dip on this list, but when they're this good, you have no choice. this fic is SO creative. similar to tin soldiers, this fic is formatted in an incredibly creative way! telling the story of bucky's hypothetical trial post winter soldier, this fic is a compilation of court transcripts, news articles, and social media posts. it's stucky at its core, but can also just be enjoyed as a bucky fic. it does an incredible job of holding your attention and truly making you feel like you're a part of this trial. this is the character work we should've gotten for bucky post winter soldier/civil war/endgame/ANYTHING.

7. i-80 west - socallmedaisy (Glee, rated M, Santana Lopez/Brittany S. Pierce)

Do you need to know the source material? Yes.

read this one right around the time i was graduating high school and boy oh boy was that the perfect time to read it. brittana roadtrip fic/ last summer in lima fic where they just... go through everything that people go through at that time. i know this one is special to me because of when i read it and what it meant to me, but GOD this one burrowed into the depths of my baby gay trauma brain and has lived there ever since. if you have time, this is a great one. just... yeah.

8. strawberry ice cream (revamped!!!) - banneancroft69 (Ocean's 8, rated E, Lou Miller/Debbie Ocean)

Do you need to know the source material? Yes.

we do ocean's 8 here sir. this one is just truly lovely. unfinished, so be warned, but it doesn't really matter, because it's mostly a timeline of Lou and Debbie's relationship, starting way back at their first meeting. i'm one of the many who believes that lou and debbie canonically had a on again, off again love affair but are ultimately each other's soulmates, and i think this fic does well to kind of tie all that complexity together in a very fresh way. i think about this one a LOT.

9. roll with the punches - greatestchange (Avatar: Legend of Korra, rated M, Korra/Asami Sato)

Do you need to know the source material? No.

godddddd this fic. this SERIES. korra and asami are estranged high school best friends. when asami learns korra's back in town and fighting in an underground fight club, she goes to seek her out and figure out why she left and what she's been up to since. this series is HEAVY, let me preface, and deals with drug abuse, self-destructive tendencies, and overall complicated humans. it will likely be the most difficult read on this list because of this, but it also is one of the most important for me. i related BIG TIME to this version of korra, and it just really is a masterfully crafted series that i cannot say enough about. please give this a read if it sounds like your thing.

10. see your world in traces - spibsy (Professional Wrestling, rated E, Seth Rollins/Dean Ambrose)

Do you need to know the source material? Yes, but a general understanding of wrestling would probably suffice.

burrowing this down at number 10 so no one notices it. seriously though, i find it hard to ever read anything wrestling related because it often veers way too far into RPF territory for me and those lines are muddy enough as is. this one though... this one is fully within kayfabe and just like.. has stuck with me since i was 16 for some reason. it's FCW era ambrollins aka PEAK twunk rollins era, and it's just such a perfect kayfabe explanation for the funky little feud they had at the time. it's genuine and messy and heartfelt and weird and i HAD to include it here if i truly wanted this list to be as honest and correct as i want it to be. if you're at all into wrestling, this is a lovely one that i should probably read again soon.

6. How do you find new fic to read? Where do you primarily read fanfiction?

I have a very erratic way of finding fics. I either go through the tags I really like and poke around, i always keep an eye on the clexa ao3 feed blog for new fics that might interest me and sometimes i'll go through maybe writers of fics i like bookmarks or even people who comment on my fics and such to see if I can find anything I like. i mainly read them on AO3 but I have read social media au's on Twitter and the like before!

9. Tag 3 fic writers you think are underrated/unknown in the fandom/fanfiction community.

I gotta tag @heda-in-the-clouds 'cause its been a joy to watch them evolve as a writer and they got a lot of fun ideas on the way, not to mention the ones they already have posted which i beta'd and loved every second of! :D

@irresponsibear has some motherfucking wonderful fanfics, I've raved about the bones au many times, but her fics will leave you at the edge of your sit, the little detective noir one? [chef's kiss]!

Finally, iwannabehappy on ao3 they don't have a tumblr (that i know of!) and they haven't posted anything in a while but i loved their fics too :D

23. What’s your absolute favorite trope to write?

Enemies to lovers seems to be a favorite without me even realizing. But like, enemies where one is hates the other while the other one just wants to kiss them??? YES! THAT'S THE STUFF! I get so excited writing that!!!

Dude, I was going through old stuff when I was a kid and stumbled upon my old rubber ducks. And I suddenly hit with the feels of fuck boi! Lexa and her kid in a bathtub with rubber ducks and the water must be splashing everywhere. Clarke's like 😍😍 and now I miss fuck boi Lexa. Do u have some hc u can share?

How about Livvy being the cutest little princess and getting pampered by Lexa while they wait for Clarke to get back from class 🥰🤩😌

When Clarke finally gets home she makes her way to the master bedroom to find the two loves of her life passed out in the large bed, surrounded by stray popcorn while Moana softly plays on the discarded laptop. The sight of her daughter’s green face makes her smile in delight. She can’t stop her smile from growing even wider when she notices the haphazard smears of green on Lexa’s face; letting her know Olivia had attempted to put some of the cream on her mother’s face. The longer she stared at the duo the more it felt like her heart might just explode from pure love and joy. Clarke can vividly remember being a starry-eyed teenager and feeling the exact same way when her cerulean eyes would catch Lexa sauntering over to her in the school hallway or when the girl would randomly poke her head into Clarke’s classroom just to say hi.

“Clarke?”

The gravely voice of her sleepy girlfriend brings Clarke out of her thoughts. She watches the brunette sit up in bed, careful not to disturb the sleeping beauty resting beside her. Lexa gently closes her laptop, silencing the Disney movie, before sliding out of the bed to greet Clarke with a kiss.

“When did you get home?”

“A couple minutes ago. I didn’t want to disturb you guys,” Clarke answers with a sweet smile as she cast a quick glance to the small body resting in their king-size bed. The steady rise and fall of their daughter’s chest always left her with an indescribable sense of calm.

Turning her gaze back to the woman in front of her she asks,

“Did you two have fun?”

“We did but we missed you.”

“Ugh, I hate these stupid night classes.”

Lexa smiles at her exasperated girlfriend and comfortingly wraps her arms around her small body. Clarke sinks into Lexa’s warm body and clasps her hands behind her neck. The brunette places a kiss on the blonde’s forehead and soothingly speaks.

“It’s just one more semester and then we’re back to the way things were. Besides, I have things under control around here.”

Lexa puffs her chest out proudly and Clarke can’t help but giggle at her girlfriend’s antics. Clarke was truly so appreciative that Lexa had done everything in her power to make this new schedule work for them. This was her last semester of undergrad and the classes she needed to graduate were only being offered at nighttime which really screwed up the little family’s routine but Lexa hadn’t hesistated to rearrange her entire work schedule – shipments, inventory, and all – just so Clarke wouldn’t have to worry about finishing school on time.

“Thank you, by the way,” the young mother says with deep adoration lacing her tone.

“You don’t have to thank me. She’s my kid, taking care of her isn’t a punishment.”

“You know what I mean. This kind of readjustment would be hard for anybody,” Clarke says as one of her porcelain hands begins to play with the baby hairs at the nape of Lexa’s neck while the other moves to cradle a tan cheek.

“You’re my girls, I’ll always take care of you guys.”

The brunette’s voice was filled with such conviction that it left no room for uncertainty. It was moments like these that Clarke wished she could show her younger self. All those sleepless nights spent contemplating the risk of admitting her feelings to Lexa; wondering if things would be different or if the girl would leave her broken-hearted like every other conquest of hers in hindsight seems so foolish. She used to worry about if Lexa could remain faithful to her or if she would live up to her heartbreaker reputation and now she comes home to the same girl wearing matching face masks with their daughter. There was no way to encapsulate all her feelings so Clarke just settles on three words.

“I love you.”

“I love you too...now let’s sneak out of here before Livvy wakes up and makes me watch Moana for the tenth time today.”
