"You Become What You Contemplate"
In these confusing and troubled times, we need to reflect on where we are putting our minds. What are our “faith solutions” for preserving our faith and our peace of mind? One of the winners in our recent “What Icons Mean to Me” contest, Scot shares his answer to this question and describes his journey towards the veneration of icons and the role these holy images play in his life:
“Growing up as a Pentecostal and later an Evangelical Protestant, I had absorbed a distrust of religious images. Yet my first conscious encounter with icons was one of those watershed moments that happen occasionally in one's life.
It occurred in a Pier 1 Imports, of all places. I was either in my late teens or early twenties, but there was something magnetic, heroic, and masculine about those holy images of Saint George and one of the archangels. I was transfixed--even if I was in an aisle of a retail store.
Fast forward to my early forties. I had taken Evangelicalism about as far as it could go spiritually. I explored Catholicism and Orthodoxy, trying to figure out where God wanted me. My first time in an Orthodox church was almost visually overstimulating (and that particular parish was still in the process of writing more icons on their walls). Veneration? Oh, that was a bit too much at the time.
Even though I landed in the Roman rite, I am still drawn to icons. They have a lively presence, as opposed to statues--they are "windows into Heaven" after all. Now, I get away to a nearby Byzantine rite church whenever I can. When I walk in and look around I know I'm surrounded by a "great cloud of witnesses." Six days a week I pray in my icon corner--I face a diptych of Jesus and the Theotokos, along with other icons of Saint Brendan the Navigator, Saint Kateri, and Saint Seraphim of Sarov–along with a seasonal one (currently the Ascension).
My favorite, however, is of the Lord, Christ Pantocrator--the earliest surviving icon. At times, I swear He smiles at me. There is a mercy in beholding an image of our Lord rather than just imagining Him. I pray with icons because ‘you become what you contemplate.’”

Modernizing Medicine: How Digital Storage Is Changing Healthcare Records
Healthcare is changing fast, and your medical records are part of this transformation.
With the rise of cloud based PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication Systems) and other virtual storage solutions, hospitals and clinics are moving away from bulky paper files and physical storage rooms.
These digital tools are making it easier for your doctors to access your health information while keeping it more secure than ever before.

Why Virtual Storage Matters in Healthcare?
The old way of managing medical records created significant problems. Files got lost, storage costs were high, and finding specific information quickly during emergencies was challenging.
Virtual storage solutions solve these issues in ways that directly benefit you:
Immediate access to your records: Doctors can pull up your complete medical history, including X-rays and lab results, within seconds.
Better protection for your information: Your private health data receives stronger protection through encryption and access controls than physical files ever could.
Reduced costs that can be passed to you: A study by the University of Michigan found that switching to digital storage saved hospitals an average of $8.6 million per year in operating costs.
How Cloud Systems Are Transforming Patient Care?
The impact of digital storage systems goes beyond just convenience. Here's how these technologies are changing the care you receive:
When your doctor can instantly access your complete medical history, including previous scans and test results, they make better decisions. This means faster diagnoses, more personalized treatment plans, and fewer unnecessary tests for you.
Security Concerns and Solutions
You might worry about the security of your medical information in digital storage. It's a valid concern, especially with health data breaches making headlines.
Modern healthcare virtual storage systems address this with:
Advanced encryption that makes your data unreadable to unauthorized users
Strict access controls that track who views your records
Regular security audits and updates
The American Medical Association reports that properly implemented cloud storage systems are actually more secure than traditional paper records, which could be accessed physically without leaving an audit trail.
Implementation Challenges and Success Stories
Transitioning to virtual storage isn't always smooth. Many healthcare providers face challenges with:
Converting older paper records
Training staff on new systems
Ensuring compatibility between different platforms
Despite these hurdles, success stories abound. Massachusetts General Hospital reduced record retrieval time from 4 hours to under 3 minutes after implementing a comprehensive cloud storage solution. Their patient satisfaction scores increased by 24% within the first year.

The Future of Healthcare Data Management
The technologies transforming healthcare records are just getting started. Soon, you'll see:
AI-assisted diagnoses: Systems that can analyze millions of similar cases to help your doctor make better decisions
Interoperable records: Your complete health information following you seamlessly between any provider, anywhere
Patient-controlled access: More control over who sees your medical information and when
In the coming years, virtual storage solutions will continue evolving to make healthcare more responsive to your needs. The days of filling out the same forms repeatedly at different doctors' offices are numbered.
Making the Most of Digital Healthcare Records
As a patient, you can benefit from these changes by:
Asking your healthcare providers about their digital record systems
Requesting electronic copies of your medical records
Using patient portals to view your information and communicate with providers
Taking an active role in managing your digital health information ensures you get the best care possible in this new era of healthcare.

Should I head to the world-renowned museums, stroll along the lakefront, or dive into the city's rich cultural heritage? I wanted to make sure I didn't miss out on any of the must-see sights. But with only a few days to explore, I needed to prioritize the top spots.
Agitation: The Fear of Missing Out on Chicago’s Highlights
I didn’t want to leave Chicago with regrets. Missing out on a key landmark was not an option for me. I wanted to capture the essence of the city, experience its energy, and make sure I hit all the iconic spots that define Chicago. I needed to make the most of my time and ensure that every moment was spent exploring something memorable.
Solution: My Journey Through Chicago’s Top Tourist Landmarks
Here’s how I made the most of my time in Chicago, hitting the highlights and getting a real feel for the city:
1. Millennium Park and Cloud Gate (“The Bean”)
I started my journey at Millennium Park, home to the famous Cloud Gate sculpture, also known as "The Bean." This 110-ton stainless steel sculpture, designed by Anish Kapoor, reflects the city’s skyline and the surrounding park. I spent some time here, taking photos and enjoying the bustling atmosphere. It's a great place to start any trip to Chicago.
2. Willis Tower Skydeck – Reaching for the Sky
Next, I headed over to the Willis Tower, which was once the tallest building in the world. The Skydeck on the 103rd floor is a must-visit. I stepped out onto "The Ledge," a glass balcony that extends four feet outside the building, and looked down 1,353 feet to the streets below. It was thrilling and gave me a bird’s-eye view of the city and Lake Michigan.
3. Navy Pier – Fun by the Water
After getting my fill of heights, I made my way to Navy Pier. This 3,300-foot-long pier on the shoreline of Lake Michigan is a hub of activity. I took a ride on the Centennial Wheel, which offers panoramic views of the city and the lake. The pier also has a variety of restaurants and shops. It’s a great spot to relax and enjoy the waterfront vibe.
4. Art Institute of Chicago – A World-Class Collection
As an art lover, the Art Institute of Chicago was high on my list. Home to over 300,000 works of art, including pieces by Monet, Van Gogh, and Picasso, it’s one of the largest and oldest art museums in the United States. I spent hours wandering the galleries, taking in masterpieces that span centuries and continents.

Google’s Citizen-Centric Tech for Government Innovation

Google Public Sector gives government citizen-centric tech
Google is a remarkable technological business because of its unwavering commitment to the customer. It is what has caused billions of users to engage daily with services and products like Search, Maps, and Gmail. And that’s what prompted my decision to join Google Public Sector soon after it was established in July 2022.
Artificial intelligence and security underpin Google’s goods and services, which provide a simple, individualized user experience. Our consumers are always receiving fantastic experiences from AI in a safe and large-scale manner throughout the globe. It is what we now refer to as “Google magic.”
The objective of the government is to alter how individuals interact with public services and how agencies run, and Google Public Sector is bringing the Google magic evolving cloud and AI technologies, security, and scale to this endeavor. For the last 20 years, we have used AI to organize the information on the planet and make it usable for individuals, companies, and governmental agencies.
We want to provide our government employees and military service members access to that power and its mission-critical capabilities.
introducing Google innovation to the government
Imagine if personnel in the public sector adopted this same “innovation” approach and relentlessly prioritized the end-user experience. The majority of people in our post-pandemic society anticipate more technology usage and want better digital services from their government. Governments, however, have yet to live up to citizens’ aspirations.
When it comes to funding investments in revolutionary technology, government agencies encounter procurement challenges. Both residents and government employees are becoming more and more irritated as a result. According to one report, the United States has unclaimed government benefits of up to $140 billion.
The “time tax,” or the amount of work needed to complete applications, put together documentation, and arrange government visits, is what the White House’s Office of Management and Budget points to as the cause of this bottleneck. Additionally, the opportunity to execute procedures online is the state service reform that 92% of individuals say would have the most positive influence on their opinion of the government.
In order to reach clients where they are, Google Public Sector collaborates with a large network of partners. In order to better serve their citizens, local, state, and federal agencies work with our partners to define their technical requirements and choose solutions that make the most of already made technological investments while also opening up new business prospects.
For instance, in Dearborn, Michigan, we assisted the local government in setting up a contact center so that citizens could access municipal services at any time and from any location in a variety of languages. Recently, we collaborated with the Defense Innovation Unit of the DoD to create AI models that would help augmented reality microscopes (ARM) identify cancer, enabling earlier and more precise diagnosis. That impacts the actual world.
Enabling military and security companies to achieve their missions
For many enterprises, moving to the cloud has the potential to be transformative since it modernizes infrastructure and speeds up large-scale data analyses. he listened to speakers from the Joint Warfare Cloud Capability (JWCC) PMO and the Chief Digital and AI Office (CDAO) of the U.S. Department of Defense discuss the need of innovation and cloud adoption to accomplish their mission goals at Next ’23.
However, the military and security agencies of our nation need the greatest standards of data confidentiality and privacy, as well as a dependable network and tools that are simple to use in mission-critical situations.
For many years, Google has been a security innovator and thought leader. We are thrilled to provide these capabilities to our military and national security clients. Google Distributed Cloud Hosted (GDCH) delivers a private, disconnected cloud network with client-side encryption and the capacity to serve sensitive workloads from the corporate level to the tactical edge for customers with the highest security requirements.
While staying air-gapped and unconnected from the general internet, it provides cutting-edge cloud services, including many of our data and machine learning capabilities.
fostering a shared digital future
Customers want their governments to provide safe, individualized services on par with those provided by for-profit businesses. To meet consumers where they are and assist them in bringing the magic of Google to their public services, is all that we have promised to the public sector.
We can collaborate to assure mission success in a safe, responsible, and scalable manner that leaves the doors open for future innovation thanks to our industry experience, our sizable partner network, and our technology.
Google Public Sector’s new 10-step guide to learn how Gen AI might enhance citizen participation and services in the future.

Automotive semiconductor effort builds momentum - Technology Org
In a step that will enable the University of Michigan researchers to collaborate closely with one of the world’s largest semiconductor research institutes, Belgium-based Imec has announced plans to establish a local presence in Ann Arbor.
This represents another step forward for a broad, Michigan-based effort to lead the development of semiconductors for the auto sector.
Imec noted the development as part of a broader U.S. expansion announcement late last week, released in conjunction with a visit to the Midwest, including U-M, with Flemish Minister-President Jan Jambon.
Imec’s Michigan presence will be designed to help propel the Michigan Semiconductor Talent and Automotive Research (STAR) initiative, led by a founding consortium that includes U-M, semiconductor company KLA, Imec, the Michigan Economic Development Corp., Washtenaw Community College and General Motors. STAR is part of a broader memorandum of understanding announced in May.
In November, the Michigan legislature approved $10 million to assist in moving STAR forward.
“The University of Michigan’s collaboration with Imec brings the automotive and semiconductor industries together at an important time and place. To fulfil the most revolutionary promises of advanced mobility, we need to develop more reliable, energy-efficient and powerful semiconductor solutions that are tailored for tomorrow’s transportation,” said U-M President Santa Ono.
“We’re grateful to Imec for catalyzing this effort and excited to lend our decades of research and educational expertise to moving it forward.”
For nearly 50 years, automakers have been increasingly embracing electronics to improve vehicle performance, efficiency, safety, comfort and convenience. Mass-market semiconductors have done the jobs—as long as they were available. The global chip shortage illuminated not only the demands of today, but also critical needs on the horizon for specialty semiconductors to enable next-generation autonomous, connected and electric mobility technology.
Essentially, tomorrow’s automotive industry needs high-performance computing platforms that can operate in vehicles. They need ultra efficient, fast chips that are capable of running on a battery and processing a vast volume and velocity of data from dozens or even hundreds of sensors in real time.
To enable self-driving decisions and support true autonomy, next-gen architectures and algorithms must be able to seamlessly sense and compute not only on the fly, but on the vehicle rather than in the cloud.
Effective vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-everything (or V2X) connectivity requires rapid communication and robust data protection to maintain security and privacy. And modular “chiplet” systems could offer customization, but with enough flexibility to avoid supply chain kinks.
“The innovation needs of the automotive industry present a completely new set of opportunities for the semiconductor community. After smartphones and wearables, automotive is positioned to become the next computing platform,” said Valeria Bertacco, the Mary Lou Dorf Collegiate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at U-M and leader of the Michigan Advanced Vision for Education and Research in Integrated Circuits, or MAVERIC, collaborative.
“The auto industry needs advances such as high performance, extremely low power computation, and AI acceleration on board vehicles—comparable to running a data center on a battery. It needs devices and circuits that offer high reliability on a much longer time horizon than traditional systems, and can sustain extreme temperatures and high vibration. It’s clear the automotive platform will drive innovation for the next decade, and provide opportunities for new industry players.”
