my headcanon is that if a kid is struggling somehow, whether through being upset, or having a panic attack, or what have you, if they go to the coaches to talk, Coach Murray will, in fact, hug the kid in question (he has multiple siblings and a few nieces and nephews).

Jack has no idea what to do when Coach Murray hugs him, but over time, he realizes it's part of the coach's way of offering a safe space to the kids, and comfort, and reassurance - hug them when their family can't.

Bitty was startled when Coach Murray hugged him the first time after his third practice, and he was getting upset over his fear of being checked, and Coach Murray said they would try to figure something out for him, but Coach Hall was right - he needed to get over the fear of checking, because it's a contact sport. (As we know, Jack solved that problem for the most part.)

Coach Hall is less sure of himself in comforting the kids (he was an only child), but when Coach Murray was home sick, and Wicky went in to practice after sobbing for an hour over a family member dying and he can't afford to go home for the funeral, Ollie asked Coach Hall to go easy on Wicky today, because of that, and Coach Hall ends up just... hugging the kid.

It startled the shit out of Wicky, because what the fuck? But it felt nice, and it was the first hug someone gave him besides Ollie and Shitty and Bitty, and it was the first hug from an adult since he got to Samwell, and, well. Sometimes a hug makes a lot of things better.

Dex gets a hug from Coach Hall when he gets upset at himself for being an asshole, and went to ask how to make it up to the others because it was so not okay, and the man just hugs him, and says just apologize, and be better.

When Tango tries not to cry over his brother being MIA while overseas, he ends up with both coaches hugging him and telling him it's okay to cry, and Tango just. sobs.

Lukas gets a hug from Coach Murray when he misses his parents so much it hurts and his hockey is affected by it, and he, like the others were, is startled by it, but it feels nice, and like with Wicky, he learns that sometimes a hug just makes a lot of things better, even if it doesn't fix everything.

Wait wait ok Coach Hall and Coach Murray aren't married.

They're together but not married.

The kids all THINK they're married, they just got that vibe (it's the years they've been together), but during Y4 of the comics, Louis finds out that this is NOT true and is HORRIFIED.

Because the others have all been getting them fucking wedding anniversary cards, and he and the other waffles did too bc their coaches are SWAWESOME and deserve to be shown they're thought about.

He does a mass text and Bitty puts it in SMH like "WE FUCKED UP" or something.

Ollie and Wicky are laughing bc they're the only ones who didn't get them a wedding anniversary card. They knew they weren't married. They knew bc they specifically asked their freshman year

Hops asks them why they're not married.

They make up some bullshit on the spot like "haha just so busy!" But the truth.

The truth.

Is they never realized they could. Yeah, they knew it was legal now and all but they never realized "oh hey we specifically can get married now"

It just never fucking occurred to them.

Lardo rocks up to graduation with the forms they need for it. Just bc she knew they wouldn't do it, and she REFUSES to let them not be married (she knew the excuse was bullshit).

Murray laughs after she slaps the paper at Hall's face and he sees what it is. Coach Hall just sputters in embarrassment as she tells him to "make an honest man out of Coach Murray already!"
