had a fun, devastating thought yesterday of a Caitvi Code Name Verity AU:
Caitlyn, the sniper, hearing Vi in the distance -
"Kiss me, Cupcake! Kiss me, quick!"

begging you to explain the lord nelson and hardy thing
it’s literally just that lord nelson (whose first name is HORATIO of all things) is one of the greatest naval captains in history but was shot in the battle of trafalgar (which he still won) and as he lay dying he called for sir thomas hardy (an officer) and, upon his arrival, said “kiss me, hardy”
and hardy kissed him on the cheek and then on the forehead and lord nelson died shortly thereafter
it’s a popular phrase but i first learned about it in elizabeth wein’s code name verity, one of The saddest books of all time, but also it centers these two girls in wwii who are best friends and “kiss me, hardy” is something they say to each other often in conclusion i’ve never been normal about it

For as many tv/movie adaptations of WWII stories that exist, it boggles my mind that no one has adapted Code Name Verity (or any of the other books by that author) yet. It has everything you could possibly want in a story: spies, plot twists, interrogations, unreliable narrators, tragedy, lady pilots, and a central female friendship that’s actually an epic love story.

lately i have been thinking about code name verity once again. what if we met on a world war 2 airfield and our friendship was forged in the fire of bombs and blood and death you invited me into your world in a whimsical scottish castle and i invited you into my world in the sky and you were an interrogator and you were almost chocked to death by a prisoner and i held you while you cried and in those fleeting moments in each other's arms everything was beautiful in spite of the horrors but then we crash landed in france and you got captured by the nazis and you thought i was dead and you told the story of our friendship to keep me alive in your head while you committed one final act of heroic self sacrifice and then you asked me to kill you via homoerotic code so you didn't have to get tortured to death and after i shot you the story you wrote about us was the only thing keeping you alive to me. and we were both girls.

I’m slowly learning that I’m a sucker for love stories with a nerdy backdrop. What I’d give for the protagonist to just completely NERD OUT. They’re so cool. Bonus points if they’re sapphic!
Here are some that I really dig:
Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid - SPACE
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein - PLANES
Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield - THE OCEAN
What other books are like this? Please let me know!
I’m aware Code Name Verity is about friendship, but isn’t that what all historians say?

Hey! I saw you tagged me on that book post, but it’s not letting me see what you said. Would you mind telling me again?
Oh how irritating, apologies!
What I said was that if you're reading about early female aviators, you should look into Elizabeth Wein, who writes both fiction and nonfiction about them and is fantastic. :)
Also everyone should read Code Name Verity. My god, what a book.

I just got done reading Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein and let me just tell you, it is SUCH A GREAT BOOK! The plot twists alone kept me on the edge of my seat! It’s one of those books you hate when you have to set it down. I cried several times and I can’t tell you how long it’s been since a book made me cry like that! Just, so good!

Currently reading Great Circle and it's bringing back Code Name Verity feelings. I read that book EIGHT years ago, it shouldn't be able to still mentally destroy me every time female pilots in WWI are mentioned 😭
