third in the little series of posts i’ve been doing, following my web weavings on adam & hoss and adam & joe. there will be a small break in my posting of these, as i’m now shifting my focus to finding poetry/quotes/songs with a parent-child focus for the dynamics between ben and his boys :) more thoughts and alts below!

hoss and joe are the epitome of the mentality that siblings are the best friends that god picked out for us. they care for each other so deeply, and they want so much to always be able to make the other laugh. and they know each other better than they know themselves; when one of them gets that light in his eyes, the other already knows what joke is about to be told, and without even speaking, they burst into laughter.

along with this, there is such a selfless, sacrificing love between them. they’d go through hell for each other. hoss will draw himself out of a near coma and find the strength to walk after being shot in the back, all because he knows joe needs him. joe will cross a canyon with a broken arrow in his shoulder and while too weak to sit upright on his horse, all because he thinks hoss is in danger. but this sacrificing love never becomes an unhealthy martyrdom, either, because the first always cares enough to check in on the second. it’s interdependent; they hold each other up, side by side.

joe will always be hoss’ little brother, but also i think he really delights in seeing him grow up and become his own person. he really perfected the balance of seeing joe as his own man while also always protecting and looking out for him. he’s still his cute baby brother that he has silly nicknames and terms of endearment for, but he always respects joe and he puts effort into really seeing him and understanding him. and he’s the kind of person that inspires joe to do better, not by telling him how to act or actively encouraging him towards something, but by simply being himself; he’s someone people want to imitate, and joe wants to be like his big brother. and as much as hoss is joe’s protector, i think it’s interesting that some of joe’s angriest and/or most violent moments throughout the series are when he’s defending hoss, either from cruel claims about his size/intellect/character, or from people who aim to or have done him physical harm.

i think a lot about how much joe relies on hoss, and how he has this instinctive, doesn’t-even-have-to-think-about-it knowledge that hoss will always be there for him. his mama died, his pa had to leave temporarily in order to grieve his wife’s death, adam left to pursue his own ambitions; but he will always have hoss. he’s never left, and he’s always been there for him. joe trusts hoss completely and never doubts him. hoss’ strength, but moreover his gentleness, are a shelter to joe. it’s with hoss that joe feels safe and feels things are right. though he’s always grateful for this, i don’t know if he ever realized how much it meant to him until hoss was gone. i don’t see how he could; you don’t think about breathing until you can’t get air into your lungs. from then on, it’s like learning to live with only one half of himself.

Sometimes I remember how one day in scouts, we had a “Sherlock Holmes day”, and it was to find a missing ring. The first bit was a code deciphering bit, where it was the alphabet matching up to numbers (a=1, b=2, and so on), and I immediately got it was that bc who wouldn’t, and I was accused of cheating. I was rather pissed off but kept going bc mother dearest wanted me to Be Social TM. Then there was a second code bit, which the number-alphabet led us to, and it was just the club penguin tic tac toe code. Me and my sibling used to write each other notes all the time in it, so ofc I got it immediately. Thing is, there was appearently other hidden clues to help decipher that code. So ofc I got accused of cheating. again. This time, I had had enough and went “oh come on the ring is in the couch cushions, it’s obvious.” And when the adults started scolding me, telling me to explain why and how I knew that, I said “the lady was on the couch when we got here, and her ring went missing. Also, that is a weird place to put a couch, i think it was out here for this game (it was)”. And THEN they tried to tell me I saw them putting the ring in the couch (cheating), then I retorted with the good ol “you made us leave this room to go look at plates. It had to be in this room.”

I was then sent home and barred from doing “group, cooperative activities”

jite was playing the timpani and he had one of them backwards so the tuner was facing away from him. alex got really mad about that so he asked jite to turn it around so he could actually tune it. jite said no because he didn't play it. alex said yeah but you can still have it facing the correct way so SOMEONE can play it. jite said no because it was broken. alex asked how tf it was broken. jite said it wasn't tuned. me and alex exchange a look. i see the "bruh" in his eyes. "bro are u like stupid..." he asks jite. jite replies "i can't play it because it isn't tuned and it's slanted the wrong way. you're stupid!" alex's patience has lasted this long and now it's ran out 💀 "IT'S SLANTED THE WRONG WAY BECAUSE IT'S FACING THE WRONG WAY. IT'S NOT TUNED BECAUSE YOU CAN'T TUNE IT IF IT'S NOT FACING YOU!!!!!!!" he screams. jite goes into the storage closet to find something to fix it 💀... "i'm just gonna..." alex starts saying, walking over to the timpani. he spins it around real quick but jite turns around the second he does that. this makes jite mad and he runs out of the closet and takes a fucking SWING AT ALEX'S FACE... alex slaps his hand away and keeps yelling at him. jite takes another swing and alex starts BARKING AT HIM. AND NOW THEY'RE BARKING AT EACH OTHER... i look at austin who's by the marimba and tap out S.O.S. in morse code referencing a moment from last year when he tapped out S.O.S. after our old band teacher made us take a test the entire period. he smiles and we turn back to watch the argument unfold. the bell has already rang and i need to pack up my 1289370981752734018327234 percussion instruments i play for our songs. alex has assembled his whole gang of friends and they're yelling at jite. alex calls jite RACIST for "invalidating the opinion of a white person" i think both alex and jite are morons 💀...

in science kyndall and i are joking around when we go dead silent. SOMEONE is whistling the meow meow meow meow song. we look around to find who did it but we can't locate them. we hear it again and whip our heads to the left. it's chase!!!!!! bro winks at us 💀 but then we hear it AGAIN, and it's filipo singing it. we hear it again from the other side of the room and it's harrison. but we still don't know who's whistling it. then we hear it. it's adam 😭

history

veronika and i ask mrs. johnson if we can go to the hallway to "focus" better. when we go out we hear the introductory choir singing their songs and we wave to them. eventually we see miles, the kid we always cheer for whenever we see and we totally freaked. we started dancing and made an entire choreography to their singing. veronika gets on the ground and starts to crab walk around and i join her. we line up in the middle of the hallway and decide to have a crab walk race to mr. mckean's from. that's when a sixth grader with a weird half bowl cut walks up, takes one terrified look at us, and descends the stairs again. we tell him that it's ok and ask if he wants to join the race. "heck yeah i do!" he smiles. he goes to his locker and drops his stuff off inside and gets into crab walk position next to us. we all yell 3, 2, 1, go as loud as we can all in unison. that's when another sixth grader turns into our hallway and looks at us. we halt what we're doing and stare at him. "nah man what the hell is this school..." he asks to the air. we can't stop laughing as we invite him to join us. "y'know.. why not?" he unlocks his locker to put his stuff away and lines his hands up with ours. now we're starting for real. we start scrambling towards mr. mckean's door. cayden is in the lead, corbin is in second, veronika is in 3rd, and i'm in 4th. we're cracking up when mrs. johnson comes out because she hears all the commotion and gives us a very disappointed look. "ok guys, NO, what even is this??" she asks. "what classes are you guys in?" she asks turning to the sixth graders. "don't make them late to their class, i sent you out here to focus..." she says turning to us. we get up, our race never completed. corbin gets his stuff back and waves goodbye to us, smiling as he walks down the stairs. cayden gets his stuff and sits across from us. "i only have like 2 minutes left of lunch so i'll just stay up here with you guys," he says. we joke around, laughing so hard we can't breathe. veronika asks if she can have some of my water and i say sure but ask if i can just pour it into her mouth instead of her drinking it because i'm a germaphobe. she says sure but asks if i can just pour it into her hands instead. she cups them and looks at me. "sure.....??"" i say. "uh oh!" cayden laughs. i pour the rest of my water into her hands and she sips it super quick. most of it falls onto the ground. "nah... y'all are crazy!" cayden exclaims. "well, i gotta go now, cya!" veronika stops him. "WAIT! besties for life?" he cracks a smile, "besties for life." we share a triple fist bump and go our different ways. it's time for us to go to lunch, so we do. i sit with miracle and veronika and we just chill. when we head back to history we go back into the hallway and start playing games on our computers. that's when we hear the choir kids singing jingle bells. we get up, start dancing, and sing along with them. they notice and all bunch up at the door. we're all dancing and waving our hands and screaming jingle bells at the tops of our lungs while mr. steve-o encourages us to sing louder. this goes on for like 10 minutes until mrs. johnson comes out and tells us to go back inside the classroom 😭

THE TAPE BRIDGE--1 5th, 1 4th, 1 3rd. their tactic? four rolls of tape and thick, sturdy bases. held 145lb, beating out a feat of engineering from another fifth grader and he got so mad.

OUR FOURTH GRADER HAD TO DO MATH--1 5th, 1 3rd. two very smart kids who work very hard that barely had to talk to each other to build the TALLEST BRIDGE at SEVENTEEN INCHES TALL.

WE DON'T REALLY CARE--1 5th, 1 4th, 1 3rd. really phoned in the bridge and then played monopoly for forty minutes.

COLOR CODED MASTERPIECE--1 5th, 1 4th, 2 3rd. fourth grader was not around march 1st when they started but proved an invaluable part of the building process because He Does Not Care About Getting Hurt and Did Grab Hot Glue With His Hands Several Times. won BEST SUSPENSION BRIDGE. it was GORGEOUS.

OWL Fest: Building Home Libraries Together

Curated Bookstore and Reading Event

In a bid to enhance early literacy and build home libraries, the Governor's Early Literacy Foundation (GELF) joins hands with the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) to introduce Opportunities with Literacy (OWL) Fest. This unique event, set to travel to 31 Priority elementary schools across Tennessee in September, offers a curated bookstore and shopping experience for students. OWL Fest allows students to select high-quality books to take home, free of charge, with the aim of boosting reading proficiency and fostering a culture of reading.   A Lifeline for Literacy in Tennessee Tennessee faces a literacy challenge, with only 40% of its 3rd graders reading proficiently. Priority schools, in particular, grapple with reading proficiency rates ranging from 22-38%. Recognizing the profound impact of home libraries on academic success, vocabulary development, and career attainment, GELF's OWL Fest aims to bridge this gap by providing students with the opportunity to bring books into their homes.   Student-Centric Book Selection Research from the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report™ underscores the importance of students selecting their books. A staggering 92% of children report that their favorite books are the ones they've chosen themselves, and 93% are more likely to complete a book they've personally selected. OWL Fest embraces this approach, allowing Pre-K through 5th-grade students to choose 6-8 books that resonate with their interests and preferences.   Building Home Libraries Year-Round OWL Fest is part of GELF's K-3 Home Library program, designed to bolster home libraries and combat learning loss by delivering books to students and teachers each summer. In 2023 alone, the program distributed a remarkable 1.2 million books to over 200,000 students, teachers, librarians, and media specialists across the state, including Priority schools.   Shaping a Literate Future James Pond, a spokesperson for GELF, shares the organization's vision: "Our goal is to promote a culture of reading in Tennessee by meeting students where they are with the books and resources they need to become lifelong learners. that’s the point i guess. some things can’t be proven just by looking at someone. some physical traits aren’t observable. you can make all the guesses and assumptions you want, but that is not proof. it is only ever a guess or an assumption.

DNA does not always dictate your outwards physical traits. that’s an…… extremely surface level way to look at it, like the way they’d explain it to a 3rd grader. DNA codes your entire existence, from the colour of your hair to your health and likelihood of developing or passing on genetic health conditions to enzyme activity in your cells. it is absolutely not always an outward physical trait. not to mention even genes that DO code for physical traits are not always expressed outwardly, since you can be a carrier of a recessive gene without expressing it.

i have never had genetic testing done, and i likely never will. most people don’t. so really there’s no way for you or me or anyone else to prove what genetics i have. the same way you can’t prove a past life or a soul. you can choose to assume they’re human. i choose to assume they’re canine.

either way, it doesn’t really change the fact that i DO recognize my observable traits as my own. so this definition would not apply to me, and likely others who use the term physical therian as well. if some want to use it, i think that’s great! i’m not saying it’s a bad term. just that it doesn’t fit for all of us, so it doesn’t make sense to insist we all use it.

I don’t think the term “physical therian” encompasses the experience described by those who use the term.

I think a more accurate term would be “depersonalized therianthropy” which could be shortened to “depo therian”.

Depersonalized therianthropy: when one’s animalistic identity creates a complete disconnect from their body causing them to not recognize their observable traits as their own

This encompasses the anecdotes I have heard and read from self identified “physical therians”. Whether this experience is caused by delusion, dysphoria, or rejection of humanity, this term is applicable.

This does not include those who use the term to convey that they refer to their body with animal biological terms.

I believe this should be called “bioterms”. It could be communicated similarly to pronouns.

Hypothetical Ex:

Toby (he/him) (wolf bioterms)

This conveys that he would like his hair to be called fur, nails to be called claws, hands to be called paws, mouth to be called muzzle, etc.

The use of the word “physical” in therianthropic terms is inaccurate and confusing. I am open to hearing other proposed terms but I think using the word “physical” should be phased out for clarity sake.
