Walking San Francisco & Thinking Out Loud May 29, Post 1 - Hills Brother's Coffee Building . I have walked by and into this building numerous times but it didn't dawn on me to take these photos until this week. Thanks, Patrick @pwoodsss for the reminder. At 11:45 am on a Wednesday, this outdoor space is usually jumping with Google San Francisco employees or Wharton Executive MBA University of Pennsylvania faculty and students. I had the space to myself and I took a set of photos that remind me what time of day to stop here again on a custom waterfront tour. . Of course, the statue. According to Atlas Obscura; Coffee Drinker statue in San Francisco. Completed in 1992 by sculptor Spero Anargyros (1915-2004), the bronze statue stands in Hills Bros. Plaza, a public square built adjacent to the original Hills Bros. Coffee factory. Known officially as the “Taster,” the mascot is meant to honor the drink’s Ethiopian roots by portraying a be-turbaned man in flowing Middle Eastern robes taking a long drink of coffee. The mascot appeared on the first vacuum-sealed can of Hills Bros. Coffee, and the nine-foot-tall statue in the plaza is a near-exact recreation of the advertising illustration." And what is not mentioned is that the Hills Brothers actually invented the vacuum sealing process which gave them a leg up in distribution of fresher tasting roasted coffee beans into Midwestern cities like St. Louis and Chicago. . Setiap hari, nyaris, saya dan banyak orang lain menghabiskan waktu di kafe, warkop, atau nama lain. Tetapi sejak kapan Warkop mulai ada? Orang umumnya menghabiskan waktu di Warkop untuk berbagai keperluan: ada yang mengetik, ada yang mencari berita (baca koran atau browsing di internet), ada yang sekedar berbincang-bincang dengan temannya. Keliatannya, tradisi di warkop seperti ini sudah berlangsung lama. Bentuk warkop dan variasinya berkembang, namun tujuan utamanya masih tetap sama. Konon, warkop atau rumah kopi pertama kali muncul di Timur Tengah, tepatnya di Kota Mekkah, pada sekitar tahun 1400-an atau 1500-an. Warkop adalah tempat berkumpul untuk berbicara tentang isu-isu politik. Konon lagi, pada tahun 1512 hingga 1524 minum kopi di warkop dilarang oleh para imam, sebab pembicaraan di warkop sering menjurus pada tentangan terhadap penguasa. Dengan kata lain, pada masa itu Warkop merupakan tempat kumpul-kumpul untuk tujuan politik. Tidak heran jika Timur Tengah adalah tempat pertama kali tradisi Warkop lahir, sebab di kawasan itulah pertama kali minuman kopi (kahwa) dikenal. Dari Mekkah, tradisi nongkrong di Warkop kemudian menyebar ke Wina (1529), Damaskus (1534), hingga Konstantinopel (1555). Warkop mencampai Inggris nanti pada tahun 1600-an. Warkop pertama di Inggris dibuka pada tahun 1652 Dalam catatan Jean Chardin (seorang pengelana Prancis pada abad ke-17) pertama kali ditemukan kisah tertulis tentang warkop (disebut coffee house). Dia menyebutkan bahwa Warkop merupakan tempat untuk: bertukar kabar, menyampaikan kritik politik, bermain game (bukan berjudi), bercerita, dan tempat berdakwah bagi para guru moral. Chardin menggambarkan Warkop masa itu sebagai tempat yang sangat sibuk, sebab semua aktivitas itu seringkali ditemukan bersamaan. Tanpa kita sadari, tradisi mengunjungi Warkop untuk tujuan-tujuan dan aktivitas yang kita lakukan hari ini, ternyata telah ada sejak ratusan tahun lalu, sejak awal pertama Warkop dikenal.
