Nicolas Masson – Travelers

After two ECM albums with the cooperative trio Third Reel, Swiss reedman Nicolas Masson presents a quartet for which he is the sole composer. The group has existed for more than a decade with unchanged personnel, touring as Nicolas Masson’s Parallels, and the leader’s writing for it always encourages creative responses from the players. Amid the changing musical landscapes in which these travellers move, you will encounter some of Colin Vallon’s prettiest ballad playing, richly melodic bass from Patrice Moret, and subtle drum commentary from Lionel Friedli. Plus, of course, plenty of Masson’s pure-toned saxophone and elegant clarinet. Travelers was recorded at Auditorio Stelio Molo in Lugano in April 2017, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

The piano opening of Schubert’s song cycle Die Winterreise is more than an echo in the opening bars of this piece by Colin Vallon.

However, the journey on which this Swiss trio takes us leads deep into European jazz territory. Even so, the music never entirely loses touch with its classical roots. This is lovely stuff.

The title is called Tsunami, and comes from the album Danse (2017, ECM 2517). The Colin Vallon Trio are:

Gli amici che porto con me - Best Albums of 2017

Torna anche quest’anno la mia personale classifica dedicata ai migliori ascolti musicali dei 12 mesi che ci hanno preceduto. Come per le scorse volte premetto che mi riprendo ben volentieri tutte le mie responsabilità soggettive e oggettive: nel compilarla dichiaro altresì che non è stato maltrattato nessun musicista o giornalista musicale (al massimo una moglie che, purtroppo per lei, non ha la facoltà di accedere allo stereo). 

La suddivisione in tre macro-categorie è una mia scelta ormai consueta e assolutamente discutibile: per quest’anno la selezione era particolarmente ardua, quindi ho optato per inserire, ahivoi, ben una trentina di dischi nell’ultima sezione, quella che potremmo definire “generalista”, e una decina a testa per le prime due.

A questo punto, buoni ascolti a tutti e, come sempre, orecchie belle aperte!
