Dorms and Prestige University? No thanks...

I was pretty bummed out that Campus life didn’t work for me like it seemed to work for everyone else.. But, I found a new college that was a fraction of the tuition and a program much better suited for me. 

Though I was no longer living on campus and within a short distance to classes, I fell in LOVE with  my new school. I ended up changing my major to Criminal Justice and found it to be true when everyone says, “You’ll just KNOW when you find your passion.” 

I thought I would never figure out what I liked to do and that I would end up working an hourly paid job at the mall forever (which can be a completely different blog post). However, when I began my second semester of Freshman year at my new college, suddenly something sparked. I began looking forward to coming to class. I would get excited about weekly discussions and assignments (I know, nerd alert). I was finally doing something I loved and was excited about! 

Not to mention the people at the downtown campus were personable and friendly -- a major difference from the artificialness of students at the bigger, more expensive university that I had came from. They didn’t judge you fro the kind of car you drove or the fact that  you couldn’t always hangout after class because you had to make it to your job.. This was definitely more my speed. 

A part of me wishes that I had just went downtown from the beginning and saved myself all the drama and trouble of switching schools mid-year... But the other part of me knows that everything happens the way it does for very specific reasons.. 

I was SO ready to leave home when I started college that I think a lot of that influenced what school I chose (Because the other college I went to didn’t have on campus dorms). I wanted the whole college experience so badly, my mind hyped it up so much that when I actually was there it fell very short of my expectations... 

I often think that if I had started off the semester with better roommates, my whole experience would have been different and I probably would have graduated from the first university instead of the one that I transferred to. And it probably would not have been something that I was passionate about (because they didn’t offer a CJ major). AND I would have been like 3X in deep with student loans than I am now!!! (YIKES!) 

My point is... Not everything will be your cup of tea. You will try really hard sometimes and still fail. Hell, maybe college isn’t for you. But find something that is! Find your passion and get excited about life again. Because when you are doing something that you absolutely despise, you are going to be miserable. If you are doing something just because you are trying to impress everyone in your life, you are going to be miserable. Make YOURSELF proud. Impress YOURSELF. And you will soon realize that all that pressure that you had put on yourself before when you were doing that thing you hated, is lifted from your shoulders. It’s okay to change your mind. It’s okay to think your path is one way and realize you hate that path and change routes. But it isn’t okay to live life always thinking about the what ifs and wishing you would have taken different opportunities. Take the leap! The hardest part is overcoming the fears of what will happen if it doesn’t work out. But, I promise, you will be much, much happier following your passions.

I think that I experienced all of this as a realization that life isn’t as easy as high school made it seem. Life isn’t what Hollywood glorifies it to be. It is much, much harder and way less of a fairytale. BUT, that doesn’t mean you should give up!! It doesn’t mean that you should give up on your dreams. It doesn’t mean that you should become disappointed in yourself. It doesn’t mean you should fall into a repetitive routine that you hate, just because it works or you’re already too far into it. It simply means that you need to find what works for YOU. Where you fit in. Who are your kind of people? What’s your kind of environment? Because when you find that perfect fit, you will thrive! 

I am so grateful now to have gone through all of that my very first semester of college. Because of my  experiences, I now have more gratitude toward the opportunity to have been able to attend school. The support of my parents and family through the journey. The genuineness of true friendship and passion for life. Without that awful experience, I would not be where I am today.

Allowing JOY to exude from the inside out is much more valuable than HAPPINESS these days and here’s why…⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ It’s been strange to claim true ‘happiness’ with all that has happened this year (what is true happiness anyway?). This is because happiness hasn’t been super consistent or reliable. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ For me, finding joy during random moments has been a lot more attainable and realistic (I am sure this is true for a lot of you as well). ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Being joyful is a reminder that internal peace and strength are much more powerful to cultivate during this time than the idea that we should be happy just because it’s a positive emotion. When you take the emotion out of it you realize the emptiness of just claiming happiness. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ When we experience joy, we allow ourselves to feel proud of who we are and what we have accomplished even if it may not seem like much these days. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Happiness fades because it can be based on things like the external validation of being around people, going places, and having tangible items. Get your cozy on!! . . I got to have so much fun with my fave @rockymountainsoapmarket during lunch today! I called Cindy to make sure she would be there and headed into a blast of must have coziness for the Fall season! . . You MUST get your hands on anything in the scent Plaid Pajamas. It made me stop and say what is this!! Totally was out of my travel size whipped silk that I keep in my purse at all times so they immediately hooked me up with this perfect sized greatness! Not going to lie, I sniffed it all day and took it around the office so everyone could smell and we all agree...AHHHmazing!! . . While almost walking out I noticed they had new mugs in. What They Didn’t Tell you About College...

When I was in high school, I thought that I had everything figured out. I would go to college, earn a Bachelor’s degree, and then begin the career I had always dreamed of. It’ll be easy, I thought, but man, was I WAY off!!

Throughout my college experience, I went through a lot(and I mean A LOT) of ups and downs. It was an emotionally exhausting roller coaster! I was in the middle of figuring out what I was going to do FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE on top of figuring out who I really was without parental direction. And that was so scary!!!

I started college so confident and excited. I mean, I had earned a 3.9 in high school so easily, college would be a breeze. Boy, did I have a new one coming for me….

I declared my major as Chemistry and signed myself up for classes like General Chemistry and Biological Psychology. I was the only (17 year old) freshman in all of my classes. I gave my undivided attention in lectures, skipped parties to study, and pulled countless all nighters in the library studying. BUT IT DIDN’T CUT IT. I was beginning to fail my classes, which hit me like a train because before college, I never received a grade lower than a B. I began to become so disappointed in myself. I felt like I wasn’t good enough and that I should give up on my dreams and find a new one…

Not to mention, dorm life, you know that thing they glorify in high school? They tell you it’s so amazing to live on your own away from your parents. You get to do whatever you want and really EXPERIENCE college. Yeah, it was AWFUL for me. I was assigned to a dorm with 3 other girls, I should have known from there that was a recipe for disaster!! None of us knew each other and I had only exchanged a few messages with one of the girls prior to move in day. Two of the girls came from very wealthy backgrounds… I mean to the point that they had nannies, and maids, and cooks back home. Their parents took us and some other college friends out to dinner one night and dropped $1,000 on dinner like it was nothing. WHAT?!?!?! Then, they proceeded to take us to Target to pick out anything we wished to fill our new dorm with, on them. It was surreal. I had no idea that some kids out there lived like this!!

It seemed pretty awesome until a couple weeks into the semester. The rich girls were SLOBS, because they never had to clean up after themselves. After all, they had maids back home. It got so bad that one time I walked into our bathroom and there was a pair of bloody underwear just chillin in the middle of the floor. GROSS!!! Like, you do realize that you live with other people, right? As if the dirtiness wasn’t enough, they began to get very snooty with me and the other girl who shared the dorm with us. Because we didn’t have as much money as them, they thought they could walk all over us and acted as if the place was theirs and we were blessed to be able to share it with them. HA! We bickered at each other so much that it got to the point that I would do so many extra activities outside of class just so that I didn’t have to go home to those assholes. Then, it got so bad that I requested a room change or threatened the school that I would drop out. I thought I had escaped the terribly nastiness of female drama when I graduated high school, but apparently not… After a lot of back and forth, the school finally granted me a room change and I was able to carry out my semester with much more wonderful room/floor mates. However, I had already done all of the paperwork to transfer the following semester. I would be moving back home with my mom and dad and commuting downtown (to a different college)for classes.

My excitement for college. For being at a big, nationally recognized university. For living the dorm life. All of it, quickly diminished. I found myself extremely disappointed and feeling like I no longer knew what to do with my life. I was back at square one.
