Fenes' "Glory's tech isn't handwaved" AU. This was great! Funny and creative, and I'm both amazed and full of admiration for Fenes' ability to juggle so many characters.

I was feeling excited and ambitious with this one. Tried some new fun things (double core endbands, painted edges) and used some new equipment (a lying press).

The Text

TITLE/HEADINGS FONT: Azonix says 'SciFi' to me, it's a bold, non-serif, sleek font.

BODY FONT: Mundo Serif, it's a decent serif body font I haven't used before. Felt like it worked with Azonix.

SCENE BREAKS: a special character in Segoe UI Symbol of a black & white icon of Earth, the globe showing Asia.

TYPESETTING: Finished typesetting the fic, left document open on my laptop, laptop's battery failed, file now crashes immediately upon reopening, issue persists with copied versions of file (；￣Д￣) . Thankfully I had a backup file for the typeset with the barebones of the text, so I didn't have to restart from scratch...

Title Page

My thinking: it takes place in space, the world's at stake, and it's the dawn of a new horizon for Earth. Glory and the titular champions are represented by Swoksaar, Desert Dust, Lord Grim, Vaccaria, and Cloud Piercer – the captains of what I'd call the 'big 5' teams. A circuitry board background element hints at the tech/mecha nature of the story's competition. It may not match Blurb's art, but I hope I was able to convey some of what the story is about.

The circuitry image is used as decoration throughout the book. I only used the avatars of the top five teams' captains because too many silhouettes would lessen their impact and readability. (Removing the backgrounds was tedious, but worth it.)

Here's what it should have looked like. The test prints for this and the BB art were fine, but I think my inkjet started running out of ink just when I printed the final copies and I didn't reprint them. (Too impatient, really wanted to finish up and read the book)

The Cover

World Champions is another Big Bang fic, and once again I based some of my design choices off of the accompanying artwork. The dominant colours of Blurb_brain's illustration are red and blue-green.

COVER PAPER: For the decorative cover material I used NASA's ASTER image of Poyang Lake. NASA has some really interesting photography some of which remind me of marbled paper, thought it could be interesting. I chose this image of Poyang Lake because 1) it's in China, 2) the colours were similar to Blurb's awesome illustration (fate strikes again, dropping matching images and artwork into my lap!), and 3) NASA is tangentially relevant to the fic, which takes place in space.

BOOKCLOTH: Verona bookcloth in the shade Black Pearl, a lovely dark navy blue colour. Thought it suited the cover paper and title page. (Bought it for this fic specifically, but the colour goes well with almost all of my decorative papers so it should see a lot of use in the future!)

Endpapers

The final decision that held this project at a standstill for two months. In the end I drew inspiration from the matchups against the final opponent in the story. The image I used is a little chaotic and a little too unrelated to identify why I picked it without an explanation, but this book is for me and I know why, so there. (Note that I played around with the colours and cropped the photo.)

It was visually confusing, limited lateral motion" "a warehouse, crates stacked on and beside metal racks that went all the way to the ceiling." "a house of mirrors, fully enclosed to be sure the Infhillte couldn’t fly out of it." "like a volcano, rivers of lava moving sluggishly down a slope, occasional vents of overheated air nearby." "a series of overlapping bridges between halls and stairways, level after level layered over an open abyss."

Trimming & Painting the Edges

Going all out, a 2-for1 deal: the opportunity to use my lying press for the first time and learn a new technique!

TRIMMING: Used a paring chisel and lying press.

CHISEL: The 1.25" wide paring chisel I used was form a modern manufacturer. (Vintage paring chisels are very thin, enough so that you can bend/flex the blade. But don't do that.) It's long and wide blade made it easier to register against the surface of the press for consistent cuts. Looks like this one below from Lee Valley.

LYING PRESS: My dad's project. Solid black walnut, hand carved screws and internal threads — he even made the tools to make the threads too! The jaws of the press are each 3 7/8" wide. It's big and heavy (though much smaller than full-sized professional ones omg), but there's enough of a flat surface to register the chisel against. A thicc boi, much like this one below from Bookbinding Supplies.

PAINTED EDGES: The idea was to have dark navy edges, speckled with white stars. I used acrylic from a tube to paint the edges — tutorials recommended it over liquid bottled acrylic, and I had an old set hanging around. Had to water it down because otherwise the paint just flaked off.

My test of trimming and painting went well. Then the trimmed book itself came out slightly crooked, the paint required significantly more watering-down than before, and the white paint did not want to be both opaque and speckle-able. Unfortunate, but still book-shaped! And now I have an idea of what to do differently next time.

Also, did not like the glow-in-the-dark paint. Looked too translucent in the light when compared to the white acrylic, and needed a thicker coat to be visible in the dark. (The thickness combined with the translucence and base colour kinda reminded me of boogers... Ended up scrapping most of it off, so there's not much left to glow.)

Endbands

Still in the mood to have fun and go all-out, I attempted double-core endbands for the first time.

TUTORIAL: YouTube @ BookbindersChronicle: Bookbinding 101 Sewing Headbands Session 2. Also watched @ DAS Bookbinding's Double-Core Endband // Adventures in Bookbinding, but I personally found Chronicle's closeup video easier to follow.

I used embroidery floss from a 100pk of assorted colours off Amazon, wrapped around a core of 1.9mm leather cording from Michaels. I drew from Blurb_brain's art for the general colours, choosing a dark base, with red, blue-green, and gold. The specific shades were picked to go with the cover.

unfortunately, not all posts can produce a hydrocarbon upon analysis. this can be for many reasons. the most frequent, however, is an odd number of hydrogen (h) atoms¹, so if your post/ask doesn't get a response, this may be why.

i also try to avoid longer posts as there are so many combinations possible that many are unstable or just not documented.

others may have multiple possible structures. i try to minimise complexity (again, for readability), so multiple structures will only be shown for posts containing 6 or fewer carbon atoms.

this is also where i stop caring about set completion (see list at end).

methodology:

first, a post is stripped of all letters other than 'c' and 'h', leaving punctuation and emojis for clarity.

secondly, points in the post that must remain constant are located (ie, a CH3 group at the start/end), then i work forwards/backwards from there.

as far as i am concerned, any adjacent hydrogens are fair game (ie, ethene could be expressed as hchhch, chhhhc, hhcchh... but not cchhhh), so they are matched up with carbons to maintain 4 bonds per C atom.

most hydrocarbons have a cyclic isomer, too; so if it has one that is accessible from the post, i will usually include it. sometimes i can only make the cyclic isomer, so the linear one is excluded.

there may also be multiple linear/cyclic isomers, so as stated prior, these will only be included if there are less than or equal to 6 carbon atoms.

lastly, it is double-checked against online databases to ensure it does indeed exist, and i am not stupid (spoiler, i am).

1: while i am aware radical and ionic substances fit this description, this is a dumb gimmick blog, and i am trying to maintain as much readability for the average reader as possible.

I think part of the reosen I'm so specific in the things I'm interested in is because it needs to be something I can be creative with.

Alot of the time, I think I unintentionally view lore, cannon and the playable/watchable/readable content as the required reading so I can interact with the fan culture and start creating my own content.

Its why I don't really get along with long form stuff like MMOs because you sink a lot of time into them, but it doesn't, to me, feel like it's making anything new. You spend hours grinding to make the charicter you want with the levels and skills you want but you don't have any new skills at the end. None of it is transferable and you had very minimal impact in the end result.

I don't particularly like open world 'creative' games like animal crossing, eather. Yes, you have creative freedom and construct things, but it doesn't have that satisfaction that drawing or writing dose because I didn't make it, make it.

Someone moulded the asset, and then someone else painted it, and another person coded it into the game so I could use it. I'm just rearranging things other people made.

I didn't like colouring as a kid because I didn't draw it. Just colouring it in felt too easy, I'd rather learn how to draw it from scratch.

It's a funny mindset to have because fanfiction and fanart are essentially colouring in. I didn't make the characters or write their stories, but for some reosen, it's just that bit more satisfying

I think Yuujis handwriting would be like one of two things; like either its handwriting that only people who are able to read it are his friends and the teacher, or like no one can read it and he gets called up to explain what word he wrote. that one guy that seems so friggin sweet and nice but like they've got these fucked up views that you usually don't uncover till much later and then you're just super concerned but you don't know what to say? kind of like the weird kid but like actually crazy views ( ex. Grades- pretty good, i feel like he would study a lot. i feel like his handwriting is like readable but like slanted to the side.

undoubtedly that stoic kid but has a bunch of friends who are like crackheads but not actually crackheads. He definitely has the best grades in the class- i believe he has a funny obsession with like specific kinds of washi tape like ones that have little dogs on it, like his notes are so pretty and he writes his a's funny like the way it shows up when its typed (a) like i do this but like i feel like he would too, and he would put lines through his z's. that one kid that's notes are so pretty it's like they spend hours on it but he somehow does it in in class and keeps up with all his notes, like each topic is color coded. his handwriting would be so fricking fancy like you have no idea how he does it but its like so normal to him.

that one girl, that like has a shopping addiction and will refuse wearing anything that isn't the best of the best cotton or like silk. like she will be constantly complaining about how she doesn't have anything to wear but never wears the same outfit more than once a month like you have no clue how she does it, but if you go over to her house she has a fricking walk in closet and her clothes are colour coded, like she's got one section for black, one for red and so on so forth. Her grades, are like terrible for someone you've like never seen studying but she always says she does for like hours on end. her notes look like someone hung her from the ceiling and forced her to write them, like they're weirdly long and big but like when she writes essays they're quite good. When she does exams and stuff she doesn't do well in the slightest (#relatable), but she's super smart in class.

since he's like super old but looks like a mid 20s guy, Imma do him too. That one kid that seems so scary but is like a total cinnamon roll. He's like that one kid that everyone wants to be friends with but for some reason he's really intimidating. Like for example, if you say something he doesn't like, or doesn't agree with, he'll just kind of stare at you and be like ??? wdym you don't like butter on toast??? its the best. I feel like he also has this unadulterated hatred for mayonnaise, he'll specifically ask the lunch lady like "miss, is there any mayonnaise???" i headcanon him as having this really cute love for like shiba inus, like his background on his computer is this really small and adorable dog but like everyone expects him to have a doberman or something. But no!!! SHIBA INUS. I think his handwriting would be so old fashioned like he doesn't write words such as "they've" he'll write something like "they have". Unnecessarily drags out words when he says them but like it's so cute cuz he's adorable. has no idea what goes on in class but actually does really well in his studies. I feel like he'll be that kid with the newest stuff but he has no clue how to use them.

the fact that no one even finds it strange how theres a panda in their class is concerning but maybe like they think he's a kid who just likes looking like a panda. HE LOVES SAUSAGES. like has like three of them in his school bag like buddy?? um go for it i guess. His grades are literally the worst. He'll be like OMG GUYS I GOT LIKE 32% like bro what?? his highest grade ever would be like 58% no clue how hes gonna get into uni. his handwriting?? Like gojo. Chicken scratch. He loves listening to music in class and doesn't pay much attention but somehow never gets in trouble?

The very first step on your journey is to invest a bit of your time on learning how to code. Make sure to read the basics of coding and start practising - practice makes perfect!

Not sure where to start? Here’s some help:

Codecademy. By far the best place to start. Codecademy has great introductory courses to begin building your foundations on coding and they also offer a wide range of coding languages. For web design, you’ll need HTML and CSS, as well as JavaScript. Other languages may be necessary depending on which platforms you use, but these are absolute basics.

W3Schools. One of the most popular code-learning websites out there. Perfect for beginners, it offers starting tips on pretty much everything you need to start creating your own templates.

CSS Tricks. If there’s any complete CSS masterlist, this is it. You can learn pretty much everything about CSS on this website with accessible explanations and clear examples.

HTML Dog. Despite focusing on HTML, this website also offers CSS tutorials in order to complement both languages.

JavaScript for Cats. A funny and cute way of getting started with JS!

Working on Tumblr? If you’re coding for Tumblr, make sure to read the Tumblr Docs. This explains everything about Tumblr blocks and will help you structure your template correctly.

Starting your own templates

Once you’re comfortable with coding, it’s time to start creating your own templates. Here are a few tips based on my own experience:

Start for yourself. You may be confident in your skills, but it’s a good idea to start creating templates for yourself before sharing them with the public. This way you’ll be able to test your work on your own website and debug things that would have slipped past you.

Find your style. Many designers don’t know what their style is and that’s perfectly fine. Finding your style means that you should find a way of coding and designing that you’re comfortable with. Your templates will have your identity all about them even if you design entirely different things.

Resist temptations. It’s easy to slip into someone else’s source code and see how they’ve done something - stop right there! Even if you have no intention on doing so, you might end up copying someone else’s work and this could bring you some unnecessary headaches.

Ask for help. Don’t be afraid of not knowing everything. Asking for help is advised but make sure to do your research before reaching out - doing so will allow you to learn a lot more than if you were to contact someone immediately. 

Styling your website

Your website will be your main connection between you and your work, and the people interested in it. Here are some tips on how to make it appealing:

Keep it clean. Avoid unnecessary elements. Exaggerated zoom effects, distracting elements such as overly thick borders, shouldn’t be used. You want your audience to feel comfortable on your website, so make it as inviting as possible. The ideal design will use a maximum of three font families and colours.

Ditch small fonts. A 10px font isn’t readable in most screen resolutions, which makes your website very hard to use. A minimum size of 14px is ideal.

Watch out for the colours. Keep your website clean is also about being smart with colour usage. Make use of black and white or dark greys for backgrounds, pairing them with an accent colour. If used properly, gradient background look amazing as well.

Running your website

You’ve learned your coding, you’ve found your style, and you’ve got your website. What comes next? Running it.

Stay organised. Running a website isn’t only about having it. You’ve got to have a plan as well. Think about what you’d like to address or share on your website and create a plan (e.g. article schedules and topics, template releases per month or week, etc).

Be polite. You will come across harsh feedback at some point, so don’t expect it to be a smooth ride at all times. People won’t always appreciate your work or agree with your opinions and that’s fine. Regardless of how you’re spoken to on your website, don’t fall into the temptation of responding on the same tone. Stay polite!

Interact with others. You won’t be successful if you’re isolated. It might be intimidating at first, but interacting with other designers and even your readers places you one step ahead on the game.

Don’t just disappear. Life takes unexpected turns but do your best not to vanish without a trace. Leaving a quick note on your website about your absence takes but ten minutes and your readers appreciate it.

Sharing your content

If you’re at this stage, then you’re ready to start sharing your content.

Use social media. Social media makes wonders these days, but you ought to stay active. Regularity is key for a successful use of social media (along with appealing posts and interesting content, of course), so make sure that you use these tools for your own advantage.
