I've heard fans say there should be a movie adaptation of The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, but consider this instead: a YouTube channel with a series of "vlogs" where characters from the Wayfarers books talk about what they're up to these days.
It would be small-scale, personal, and sweet. Just like the books we've grown to love.

THE WAYFARERS by Becky Chambers. This is one of my all-time fave go-to fluffy comfort series (with just enough heart crimes to keep things intense), and therefore is also my first ever Illumicrate order. I am Weak™ for painted edges.

one of the (many) things that resonated with me after reading the Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers (if you haven't read them yet, GO READ THEM) is Ouloo's opinion on the exhaustion of political activism vs taking the easy way out and letting others do the work for you.
she wants to live a quiet life, and she wants people to stop killing each other. that's the extent of her politics. she doesn't know the complexities of the political landscape of the galactic commons in which she lives, nor is she obligated to become an expert in it: fundamentally, she wants people to get along, and she wants to serve them cake, and she does her best to live her life in exactly those terms. when she's confronted with her own biases, she works doubly hard on herself to overcome them, because her existence is dominated by that one, very very simple thing: be kind to others. some of the other characters look down at her for it, saying it's naive, that the world can't be made better with cake, that if she really cared she'd do something more tangible about it.
but I think there's something really valuable in that mindset. I want to be kind to others, and I want others to get along. I don't have the answers to all of the political questions in our society. but also, I don't have to. not everyone is capable of being loud and angry. I go through so much anxiety and stress, worrying that I'm not doing enough, I'm not loud enough, I'm not doing my part to change the world we live in, what if I'm just being lazy?
sometimes living your own life gently and with kindness and interacting with others from a place of love is enough. we need both kinds of people in the world. and sometimes gentle people get loud, and sometimes loud people need gentleness.
not having all the answers all the time is okay. worrying is not activism. anxiety is not activism. you are allowed to take care of your body and mind.

I FINISHED THE WAYFAIRER SERIES AND IT WAS IMPECCABLE, 10/10
it explores interspecies relationships on a professional level, personal level, and as a society in general. potential mild spoilers ahead but this is all what i liked about the series: (theres more too i dont wanna tldr the whole series)
environments not suited for certain species so accommodations made to make them feel more at ease
harmingans more suited to moist and not too harshly scented environments, use of mobility aids akin to electric wheelchair to not touch the ground (and equipped with mist machines for the moisture they need)
aeluons who primarily use colour to speak so specific aeuleon branded grey paint being used to paint buildings
varying types of grooming care and seating, sleeping arrangements for the different species like aandrisk, aeluon, laru
dives into the varying parental styles of each species, and doesnt devalue one type in preference for another
doesnt shy away from different species asking personal questions related to the species on how they operate, because they never get to experience their sensations
uses they/them/their for the sianat species that bonds with a hivemind host, so in turn uses xey/xem/xyr for neutral pronouns
the all non-human characters in the last book discussing the concept of cheese, and being equally disgusted by it

I love reading books but sometimes people need to communicate their recs better 😭
I asked for recs and got given 2 books that was part of the same series, however they didn’t have which one was the first and second on them, now that I’ve gone to sit down and read them, I had to actually figure out which was the first, come to find out that the person recommending them neglected to tell me that this wasn’t the 1st and 2nd, but the 1st and the 4th!
I was told I was getting the 1st and 2nd books, and I can’t do anything about it cause I’m in a different country 😭😭😭😭
I will admit part of this is my fault for not doing research on the books before leaving the country, but still, a little warning would have been nice.
If anyone was curious or doing your own research, this is the order for the Wayfarers series.
1st Book - The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet
2nd Book - A closed and Common Orbit
3rd Book - Record of a Spaceborn Few
4th Book - The Galaxy, and the Ground Within

my thing with the ao3 shit is like. yes they host immoral shit. i dont disagree that that sucks. but do these people advocating for stricter moderation ever consider how mentally draining it is to have to sift through so much content of that nature as a moderator? like not just the amount of manpower and whether or not they can afford it but the psychological cost? its a job no one wants and it becomes untenable so quickly. ao3 is not unique in this problem. even the biggest giants are in the exact same boat, using bots to make up for a lack of manpower to little avail, and thats how we end up with photos of tan puppies getting flagged
its just like. something where i dont feel like theres an easy solution ya get me

Fiction is about conflict, drama and mistakes and the reasons and consequences behind human behavior. People make the mistake of conflating enjoying art with agreeing with what it depicts and that’s just not how consuming media works. I like hurt/comfort fanfic, but that doesn’t mean I want to see my partner beaten up. I really enjoy Hannibal, but that doesn’t mean I approve of cannibalism. What we read, watch, write or ship doesn’t reflect our character. If that were true, Stephen King and George R. R. Martin should both be in prison, and every fan of Die Hard would be on a watchlist. We enjoy stories because they take us outside of ourselves, into adventures we could never have and into the minds of people we could never be. That’s art. And while it’s always important to be critical and thoughtful about how and why we enjoy something, that should never keep you from liking what you like. And it certainly doesn’t make you a bad person.
You are literally preaching to the choir about art, however, you guys are about seventeen levels of willfully blind for shipping a vulnerable character with someone who spent the entire time hunting them down in order to physically harm them. "But you don't know he would've--" then why did he have a gun? Like, deadass, no shit on all of the above. I actually have a degree in fiction. This is pre-101 info. The wildly concerning "oh, but you can REDEEM your abuser and they can learn to be a better person if you only love them!" kinda shit that Ingrith x Maleficent, Van Helsing x Dracula, and, yes, Jason Carver x Eddie Munson (or, frankly, anyone -- Mason went on record saying Jason was a narcissist and I've dated a narcissist, the kindest thing you can do for them is to leave their ass and tell them why.) Justifying the abuser x canon abusee ships as "but they need a redemption arc" is completely ignorant of the real-life implications of that -- and before you start going "oh, but /I/ can differentiate--" congrats. I didn't say you couldn't. But I am saying that there /are/ people who will say /oh but--/ and I'm not standing for it. I have known a number of Jason Carvers in the wild. Quasi-wealthy white men* who fit a standard mold and use their standard mold and "nice guy" attitude to get away with abhorrent shit are the exact type of guy that needs to be vilified. RIP to you guys, you're gonna do what you want to do regardless of what I have to say, but you're still wrong, Eddie may be obnoxious in ways, but he's not an asshole like Jason and I'm gonna keep dragging people who ship abusers with the object of their abuse. (*Shout out to Queen Ingrith specifically for going you’re right, Not All Men, I Am No Man, and then pulling the SAME SHIT.)
