I’ve been thinking a lot about the Reddit situation today, and it’s really a shame that we’re losing access to so much information if things don’t improve over there. I’ve seen other people mention the fact that any time I googled a problem or similar I’d append “Reddit” to the end of the search because all of these niche communities had passionate people recording detailed (albeit sometimes incorrect I’ll admit) information that will be much harder to come by if the site doesn’t survive. It reminds me of a situation very similar to this, when in nineteen ninety eight the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell, and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcer's table. And now senior tumblrists, watch the Reddit refugees potentially lose their minds lol. Don’t know if I did the meme justice.

Tbf, if I open a new tab or refresh the page I’m able to reblog again - but if I’m deep in the dash that’s obviously not the ideal move to make. I’m assuming this has something to do with the new UI Tumblr’s using because this hasn’t happened before.

Also, having refreshed the page and basically JUST making this post - can you fucking not??

Scholarship and grant opportunity from NAAAP NY

If any of you live in New York State, NAAAP NY has launched a scholarship program and a grant opportunity! Here are the details.

Scholarship program: $2000 (and other benefits) for API college-bound students or current undergrads who demonstrate leadership potential

Project grant: $2000, mentorship session, and more for anyone in NY (not just API individuals) who has an idea, community initiative, or project that will benefit the API community

The deadline for both is March 31, 2023, with finalists receiving notifications in early April for interviews. I’ll drop the application link in a reblog in order to avoid this post being hidden in Tumblr search!

all the major third party Reddit apps are shutting down on 30 June. some really big subreddits are shutting down indefinitely now, instead of just going private for two days as originally planned.

I've only been using Reddit for a few years but this still makes me really sad. even if you don't actively use Reddit this will probably affect you - so many helpful resources are on there.

Reddit is apparently about to ruin itself. They're going to charge significantly more for API access, effectively killing 3rd party apps, which then makes moderator tools disappear. The creator of the Apollo app claims they quoted an estimated $20 million PER YEAR for API access

There's also going to be a new NSFW policy, banning all such content from the API, and inviting Tumblr comparisons.

It's suspected this comes before Reddit IPO, trying to sanitize the site and make it appear more valuable to investors
