Decarabia - Day 21
Race: Fallen
Alignment: Neutral-Chaos
April 18th, 2024
Tumblr media
The greatest demonic compendium, the Ars Goetia, holds many strange demons, but one sticks out to many as the most peculiar; the sentient pentagram, and our demon of the day, Decarabia. An iconic design in the series, this demonic starfish has appeared in many SMT games, almost always as a fallen race demon, yet his role in the goetic grimoire is... bizarre, to say the least.
Decarabia is the 69th (nice? sorry, i just had to.) demon listed in the grimoire, and his description gives way to him being incredibly bizarre. Described as a pentagram star when first summoned, this Marquis of Hell's purpose is effectively as a treasurer and jeweler, providing his summoner with the ability to understand the value of any gems and gold in their possession when presented to the demon. As the lesser key of Solomon puts it,
"He appeareth in the Form of a Star in a Pentacle, ⭐, at first, but after, at the command of the Exorcist, he putteth on the image of a man. His office is to discover the Virtues of Birds and Precious Stones."
But what's that about birds? Well, I have no idea! Next to his ability to appraise gold, Decarabia provides his summoner with the ability to commune with birds, as well as being able to conjure a bird familiar to do one's bidding. Decarabia is strange, even by the standards of the grimoire, with his reign being defined mostly by a control over things that could either be done by a human, or are mostly useless!
However, I do have to admit, I respect the hustle. As the sixty-ninth demon in the grimoire, it's quite clear that Solomon was likely running out of good demons to summon, given that it finishes at 72 (Joke shamefully stolen from Tony4You.) Decarabia's entire existence is bizarre to me, yet also fascinating, a Marquis of Hell whose entire domain is based around things that most people could already do, or would have next-to-no interest in.
In SMT, though, this misfet marquis is given some much needed love- his design, a demonic starfish with an eye in the center, is about as good a design they could get given how vague most descriptions in the Ars Goetia are, and is iconic in its own right- you show even a casual Persona fan this star pentacle and they'll recognize him right away. Of note, of course, is his appearance in SMT III, wherein he's found in the city of Ginza waiting for the arrival of his best bud Forneus, who you murdered earlier that week. I gotta wonder if he ever found out about the untimely fate of his friend.
Overall, in spite of his domain being small and nigh-useless, this misfit starfish has won many an SMT fan's heart, and I'm no different. Decarabia my beloved.

MATRIARCHY CRIMINAL LAW — BASIC LAWS — PART II
Tumblr media
IN THE NAME OF THE QUEEN, HER ROYAL HIGHNESS, EMPRESS OF THE MATRIARCHY, RULER OF THE MATRIARCHAL WOMEN, PRIME EMPRESS IN HER OWN RIGHT APPOINTED BY HER GYNARCHIC SISTERS — HERE THERE IS THE CRIMINAL LAW OF THE MATRIARCHAL STATE!
Now that we have the basic principles of foundation of Matriarchal State we can advance to the next step, to analyze the Criminal Law of Matriarchal State. Criminal Law in Matriarchy State is the compendium of Matriarchal & Gynarchic Laws that relates to a crime. It prescribes conduct perceived as threatening, harmful, or otherwise endangering to the property, health, safety, and welfare of Lady-Citizens of Matriarchal State. Most Criminal Law is established by statute, which is to say that the Matriarchal Laws are enacted by a Matriarchal legislature. Criminal Law includes the punishment and rehabilitation of male domestics or Lady-Citizens who violate such laws.
Tumblr media
Women must have preponderance in the Criminal Law of Matriarchy State over any male creature.
Criminal Law varies according to jurisdiction, and differs from Civil Matriarchal Law, where emphasis is more on dispute resolution between two Lady-Citizens and victim compensation, rather than on punishment or rehabilitation of rebel males.
Criminal procedure on Matriarchy State is a formalized official activity that authenticates the fact of commission of a crime and authorizes punitive or rehabilitative treatment of male offenders.
THESE ARE SOME OF THE CRIMINAL LAWS UNDER "MATRIARCHAL JURISPRUDENCE" AND ITS BEST CRIMINAL LAWS PROPOSED BY THE LEADING GYNARCHIC LADIES WHO HAVE EXCELLED IN GYNARCHIC LAWS IN THE MATRIARCHY STATE OVER THE YEARS...

This Compendium Of Criminal Laws Has Been Approved By The Empress Of Matriarchy State.
SUMMARY
Tumblr media
Firstly, as we have learnt in this second part regarding Criminal Law of Matriarchy State, Women must have preponderance in any criminal law legislature in a Matriarchal State over any male creature. Is important for Gynarchic Women to exercise with severity their own compendium of Matriarchal criminal laws, in order to set an example and to prevent future infractions by male domestic slaves, owned by the state or private, i.e., imagine the case of a serial male rapist who sexually abuse a Lady-citizen and is sentenced to male castration, it could be that he gets an Empress' mercy decree the first time, but the second time that he commits another sexual abuse against another Lady-citizen then is here when the Gynarchal Women must set an example and certainly castrate this male rapist to prevent more similar crimes to this one against other Lady-citizens, Criminal Law it is also a good thing in order to maintain order in a Matriarchal State and certainly male castration must be regulated on this Compendium of Gynarchal Laws.
Secondly, I consider most relevant is the one related to "doubts," as the Gynarchic Women clearly state in case of doubt or lack of evidence a Gynarcha Court must always decide in favor of Women; While in case of doubt or lack of evidence a Gynarchal Court must always decide in disfavor of male domestics slaves. This point is very important because in this way Women take again preponderance, the same that I stated above, the preponderance of Women in Gynarchy is Paramount, it really does not matter what a male said, what really matters is what Women said in a Gynarchal Court of Justice, that is the reason why Women in Gynarchy must have high standards and convictions towards Female Supremacy. And it may be that sometimes the system can play agaisnt males, but is not that the point? The Gynarchal systema was not designed to favor males but instead it was designed to favor Women. That's why teenage Women must learn since an early age to never feel "sorry" or "pity" for a male domestic when he has been affected by an unfair or mistaken judgment by a Dominant Woman, on the contrary Gynarchy Women must feel empowered when something like that happens and the enjoy the unfair fate of that male, as She must be fully Gynarchic all the time no matter what.
Thirdly, I consider relevant the "limitation" point because again it gives Women of the Gynarchy preponderance just by the fact of being Woman, just as it should be, as it clearly states that in order to prosecute a Woman it has one calendar year before the offense expires; While for offenses committed by males the limitation period is set to 20 years and no matter the type of offense. This is one of the most beautiful paragraphs of criminal law in Matriarchy State because it gives Women Freedom while in the case of male domestics it bounds them to a pepetual good behavior in obedience to the Gynarchic Deeds of Foundation for life. Is important in any Gynarchic Criminal Law that crimes committed by male domestics do not expires so quickly, and the Gynarchic Women have considered 20 years to be ideal for this regard, i.e., imagine the case of a male domestic who has committed sexual harassment against a teenage Woman, when that Woman becomes more Dominant by Gynarchic nature, She will have up to 20 years upon this offense to accuse that male domestic to the Prosecutrix Office and take that male to trial, blessed be the Gynarchic Justice System, and any male accused of sexual harassment must pay his wrongdoing against any Woman of the Gynarchy.
Fourthly, regarding the types of punishment for male slaves, owned by state or private, I think is marvelous and it should be taken as the perfect model by Women everywhere, let's start analyzing the first one: "forced labor." Of course forced labor can only apply to male slaves and is the first point because the Gynarchic Women through forced labor redirects the negative energy from male slaves offenders into something good for the Matriarchal State. It is very important that Women everywhere see "forced labor" of male slaves as something normal and use it wisely for the advancement of Matriarchal State and Women in general. "Corporal punishment" also plays a very important role here, and as the Gynarchic Women say, Lady-Judges must always search severity on the punishment by the Imperial Executrixes, and if they are not satisfied, they should ask for the repetition of the punishment with more severity and these corporal punishments must be always carried on with a single tail leather whip of 130 centimeters this is very important so that the male domestic offender can feel the pain in his flesh and prevent him to commit another offense in the future. I consider Paramount as well male "imprisonment," as this in imprisonment in a facility certified by Matriarchal State's Court Executrix Office must bring the male domestic offender to Gynarchic order. Here is important that Court Executrixes exercises a stern correcting behavior so that this male offenders totally surrender to the Matriarchal State standards, i.e., Court Executrixes must feed all males in imprisonment in dog bowls from the male slop with the leftovers of the Lady-Citizens always and without any excemption.
Fifthly, when regarding to "Testimony," in a Gynarchic Court is important that in case of doubt, the testimony of Women must have more probative value than the testimony of any male domestic. This is important because again it gives Women preponderance in the Gynarchy, just as it should be, according to the Gynarchic Women it only takes the testimony of two Women against a male domestic for him to be condemned, which is something wonderful and an admirable thing, that Women everywhere should embrace it and fully accept it. It is important that the Woman always has a position of Lordship over all males, no matter Her age, so that this point can be fully exercised. Women must be feared and respected by the male domestic slaves, period!
Sixthly, I consider of vital importance to Matriarchy State the "Appeal Process." According to this point only Woman has the right to appeal a formal sentence of a Lady-Judge; And no appeal is permitted against the judgment of a Lady-Judge by any male domestic, from state or private. Again Women take preponderance in Gynarchy, just as it should be, and there is nothing wrong even if the defendant is innocent and is declared guilty, because males must have limited rights or no rights at all in a Gynarchal System, so it must be the responsibility a male drone to prove his innocence to a Lady-Judge, this is the foundation of Gynarchy and for what we all who believe in Gynarchy & Matriarchy must pray on to the Gynarchic Goddess to become in reality, once you reach this point there is no turning back, as the Gynarchic Women will exercise the Gynarchy with severity, just as it was supposed to be with Dominant and Demanding Ladies everywhere. blessed be the Gynarchic Goddess! It's important that State Prosecutrixes appeal when a male domestic is acquitted, there have been cases in Matriarchy State where, for example, a Gynarchy Court has ruled against castration of a male domestic, however thanks to the appeal initiated by the Prosecutrix, many of these males if not almost all of them, will end up being castrated even if they are innocent, because this is Gynarchy and this is as it should be, Women need to learn to be bitches, witches or whatever you want to call it because it is only through this way that Gynarchic Goddess can fully bless the Gynarchy! My admiration to those Prosecutrixes that have reverted a male castration acquittal through the appeal process, they are exemplary Women of law in the Gynarchic State, just as it should be. Prosecutrixes must not be limited to revert male castrations through the appeal process but as well as cases of "male euthanasia" and of course in cases of "capital punishment" especially in cases of sedition and male insubordination to Matriarchy State. At the end that's exactly the work of an Imperial Prosecutrix "chase male offenders."
And finally, Seventhly, here I want to give a general summary focused on "the Empress." As you were able to see, the role of the Empress is Paramount in "Gynarchy," She is in fact like a Queen Bee to the honey bees, and it is for that reason that an Empress must be trained for that executive position of the Matriarchy since childhood. Much of the success of the "Gynarchy" depends on the fact that an Empress should not be soft and weak Empress, but on the contrary She must be a stern Empress, a hard and firm Empress, who must set the example to all the Women in the "Gynarchy." Only a harsh and rough Empress can vitalize the Gynarchy, when we see at nature most often the honeycombs that fail are those who have a weak Queen Bee and these honeycombs usually are destined for extinction: While on the contrary the honeycombs that have a strong Queen Bee are destined to success, and that success can be felt in the honey that has produced that honeycomb. That's why if an Empress need to set an example, i.e., with Her own son then She does it without hesitation, in any area that is required, from the castration of Her own son, or to the euthanasia of Her own son, or to even a capital punishment of Her own son then She does it. These three are like the most radical exampes, but we can summarize this point that the Empress must set an example in exercising the full "Gynarchy" with Her own male relatives always and no matter what, with no exceptions allowed even for Her own son or any other male relative. When to exercise the "Mercy" or not is something that the "chosen" Woman to be a future Empress must be taught during Her Gynarchal instruction and education, but we can say that and 80/20 rule is the most optimum, which means She must only have mercy in the 20% of the cases, in other words She must have "mercy" in rarely occasions, even if the male is innocent She must deny "mercy" in the 80% of the cases. A good Empress certainly will allow as many castrations of male drone/domestic offenders as possible, as well She must allow as many male euthanasias as possible and of course She must allow as many capital punishments as possible in order to safeguard the Matriarchy State from sedition, insurrection and male rebellion against the Gynarchic Deeds of Foundation its Principles and the Matriarchal State Itself.
Blessed be the Gynarchic Goddess!

A compendium of references to Portugal in Japanese video games
The beginning of the historical relations between Portugal and Japan dates to the year 1541, when a Portuguese ship washed ashore at Jingujiura. Nearly sixty Japanese words are of Portuguese origin. A variety of Japanese traditions and culinary delights were introduced by Portuguese traders, sailors and missionaries. But in what way has this cultural exchange extended to the more recent phenomenon of Japanese digital games? As a portuguese devotee of Japanese culture, the topic seemed relevant enough to merit some additional exploration.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To my knowledge, the first significant reference to Portugal in Japanese video game is found in Koei's The Age of Discovery from 1990, a game published in the west under the title Uncharted Waters. The main character is a disgraced Portuguese nobleman named Leon Ferrero who resorts to maritime exploration, trade and naval warfare to restore his family's good name and prestige.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Its 1993 sequel, known in the west as New Horizons, diversifies the base game structure of the original by including multiple characters to select from, each with their own story and mission. Among them is the tale of João Franco, the son of the original episode's protagonist Leon, who sets out to discover the mysterious location of the fabled Atlantis, no less.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another meaningful reference can be found a year later in ArtDink's 1991 strategy game The Atlas, in which the player takes on the role of a 15th century explorer with a five year contract with the King of Portugal to discover and chart lands around the Iberian Peninsula.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 1998, ArtDink recreated the game for contemporary systems and published as Neo Atlas. The protagonist is a Portuguese trading company owner seeking business expansion opportunities in remote territories, as well as discover and chart hitherto unknown parts of the globe. A similar premise is found in a later sequel, Neo Atlas III.
Apart from nautical strategy games, a few other titles exist where mentions to the Portuguese territory, language and culture can be traced.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Atlus' futuristic vision of Earth in Maken X includes a most unexpected tour of Europe, with a mandatory stop in Lisbon. Inexplicably, the developers got its geographic location wrong and moved to all the way to the northern Spanish region of Léon. The level, itself, boasts a reasonably accurate depiction of one of the city's oldest quarters, Alfama, and the architectural styles found therein.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although I could not discern any actual references in the game itself, the Grandia II soundtrack by the veteran composer Noriyuki Iwadare contains two themes whose lyrics are written in Portuguese: A Deus, a double-entendre that can be translated to both farewell and to God; and Canção do Povo, meaning People's Song. Also, the name of the official soundtrack is named Melodia, which translates to Melody as you'd expect. Both themes were performed by guest singer Kaori Kawasumi, who took on the composer's challenge to sing them despite her not knowing the language.
She was coached and assisted by José Álvarez and Motoi Sato from the Portuguese Arts and Culture Center in Japan, whom she thanks in the acknowledgement section. The Grandia II Special Package edition booklet contains a page with two photos of Portugal, one for the Jéronimos Monastery in Lisbon and the other, seemingly, for the Moorish Castle in the nearby town of Sintra.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The last Pomping World (a.ka. Buster Bros/Pang) that Mitchell Corporation ever produced before shutting down was the 2010 DS European exclusive Magical Michael. It includes two levels set in Portugal, one in Lisbon by the Belém tower, a nautical landmark, and the other in the Sintra National Palace. Their representation is at once pleasingly stylized and true to life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This final reference is found in Spike Chunsoft's third installment of their successful visual novel series, Nyūdanganronpa V3 Minna No Koroshiai Shin Gakki. Among the dozens of MonoMono machine items that can be acquired, one is a weathercock styled after a traditional Portuguese folktale hero, the Galo de Barcelos, meaning the rooster of Barcelos, a town in Northern Portugal.
As per the description, this animal became famous through an age-old tale involving a man wrongly sentenced to death who seconds before his execution remarked he was as certain to be innocent as it was certain that a nearby rooster would sing. Because the bird did crow, much to everyone's amazement, he was exonerated. Thus, the black rooster became a symbol for truth.
I would like to thank @diogojira and @DanielOlimac for their assistance in making this article possible.

I figured I should answer this eventually.
SO, since about the beginning of August, Cori (the person who sent the ask ^^^) and I have been brainstorming a Trigun: Maximum AU.
The AU started with the premise of: What would happen if another Independent Plant were to be born on No Man’s Land?
Initially, I wanted this to happen after the events of TriMax, with the Plant child eventually meeting and potentially being raised by Vash. The thing is, I like Wolfwood too much. I wanted him to be there too. Also, I like Vashwood, and the idea of throwing an alien baby at them is funny to me.
So, now the AU has turned into: What would happen, if between the events of Volumes 6 & 7, another Independent Plant was born, and how would that change the plot?
Anyway, I began rambling this idea to Cori in DMs, we bounced ideas off each other, and created a plot outline/lore compendium contained in a Google Doc. I’ve done some snippets of writing for the AU, while Cori has made some wonderful art! (I did some art too, and I’ll show it off in a little bit)
Introducing my precious, wonderful, arson-capable, baby girl, Angelina Saverem-Wolfwood III!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Yes, I named her after Wolfwood’s bike. It was meant to be a joke. I wanted to give her a “proper name”, but the nickname “Angie” was too cute and it stuck. This is the in-universe explanation as well.)
And that’s how I accidentally made a Vashwood fan kid.

Azalin Reviews: Darklord Dominic d'Honaire
Tumblr media
Domain: Dementlieu Domain Formation: 707 BC Power Level:💀💀⚫⚫⚫ Sources: Domains of Dread (2e), Realms of Terror (2e), Domains and Denizens (2e), Monstrous Compendium I-III (2e), Secrets of the Dread Realms (3e)
The rolling hills, sparse woodlands, and relatively peaceful wildlife of Dementieu merely obfuscate the true horror of this realm - petty, bickering nobles used as marionettes by a man child.
The Dementlieuse use art to hide all they do. They wear excessive amounts of face paint and ridiculously elaborate wigs to conceal their flaws and even distasteful stage magicians aren’t as they first appear. Stage magic, bah. At least they have a secret society in which they perform real magic, but to have such masters of the arcane reduced to mere entertainment is beyond insulting.
The divide between the upper and lower classes of Dementlieu is extreme with the upper class spending their days in useless rivalries and trivial pursuits while the poor do all the actual work. This has resulted in uprisings in the past and things appear to be on the brink once again.
Most of this is Dominic D’Honaire’s design or more accurately, playground. Dominic was born in the land of Mordent and has enjoyed the art of manipulation since he was a child. Some say he was born evil, others blame over indulgence from the adults in his life after his mother died. Whichever the case, Dominic took delight in manipulating people against one another and relished in each relationship he ruined.
He was so skilled and subtle with his machinations that those he used often thought they were carrying out their own whims. When he was 7, he encountered one of the first adults in his life that actively tried to enforce strict rules on the spoiled brat, his nanny. To rid himself of her, he convinced her of things that were never true and ruined every relationship she held dear. Her mind was so warped by his gaslighting, he convinced her to throw herself off the rocky cliffs of Mordent and into the Sea of Sorrows.
When the Mordentshire constables became suspicious of the nanny’s disappearance, Dominic became uneasy and convinced his father to move the family out of Mordent. A common theme in there realms for Dominic was not the first to flee Mordent only to enter his own prison. As the D’Honaire’s left Mordent, the domain of Dementlieu was formed with Dominic as its Darklord.
As a child, Dominic continued to manipulate the adults around him to amass wealth and influence. By the age of 20 he was appointed the chief advisor to the lord governor and is the head of the Council of Brilliance that advises them. This Council and the lord governor are merely Dominic’s puppets. Well, all but one who Dominic has deluded himself into believing he is in love with.
Dominic’s rule is based on his natural and supernatural means to manipulate and control others. Though not a spell caster, his voice and gaze are similar to the Suggestion and Dominate spells. With time, his domination over another’s mind is almost permanent. These individuals are referred to as “Obedient” and only Domination by another or leaving the realm of Dementlieu will remove Dominic’s influence.
The greatest threat to Dominic’s rule is “The Brain”. Dominic believes this to be a code name of some sort, but it is literally a brain in a jar and considered to be a failed experiment by Mordenheim. So...no differetn from any of the doctor's other experiments. This Brain and Dominic are in a constant game of chess trying to gain control of the people’s minds without knowing who their opponent is.
I appreciate a cunning web of manipulation, but only when it serves a greater purpose. Dominic’s plans are more for his own entertainment and have very little value. Of course, getting to the spider at the center of the web would be difficult for those unable to move in high society, but this is Dominic’s only real power. His curse is a strange one. Our Tormentors gave this over-sized child a literal playground and the only drawback he faces is any woman he finds attractive will find him repulsive. Is this a true curse or just an indication of the good taste and high intellect of Dementlieu women? I am in a generous mood, I will grant 1.5 skulls to this man child.

The King’s cousin David Linley on his new career
The Times article by Lisa Grainger | Published 25 January 2023
The Earl of Snowdon talks to Lisa Grainger about his book on English crafts, and mentoring future creators at his furniture-making college at Highgrove
There aren’t many people who’ll admit that crafts can reduce them to tears. The Earl of Snowdon is one of them. At one event, he recalls, musicians including Jeff Beck, Mike Rutherford and the Clash were invited to meet and interact with “incredible luthiers, who make violins and guitars and cellos”. It was “just magical”, he says. “It really did bring a tear to the eye . . .”
Since David Linley, King Charles III’s cousin, became the first royal to follow a vocation — producing handmade furniture — and set up an eponymous business, he has been one of Britain’s most vocal champions of crafts. Which is why he wrote a book, Craft Britain: Why Making Matters, co-authored by Helen Chislett, to bring attention to extraordinary craftspeople around the country.
The glossy tome, with an erudite introduction by the design writer Stephen Bayley, is not only a directory of all the key crafts organisations from Cornwall to the Hebrides but a compendium of some of our nation’s most remarkable makers. It takes in embroiderers based in Hampton Court Palace and chair craftsmen from Orkney, leather sculptors and cobblers, marquetry specialists and even a whip-maker.
Sadly, Chislett says, some crafts were left out of the book because the skills have died out. For instance, England no longer has a cricket ball manufacturer even though the game was invented here, “and we probably won’t make bats for much longer”. Hand-stitched kilt-making is on the Heritage Crafts Association Red List of Endangered Crafts, as is neon sign-making; even bell-making is on its way out, with churchgoing declining.
On the other hand, there are crafts that are growing. Ceramic-makers, for instance, have sprung up in the southwest of the country. In Newcastle metalworkers whose families previously might have made ships are constructing metal furniture. Chislett adds that crafts fairs are becoming increasingly popular, particularly with the younger generation. “They’re a lot more into sustainability . . . and you are less likely to throw something away if you know who made it.”
There’s a growing appreciation of bespoke objects at the very high end of the market, Linley says. At his furniture company (from which he resigned in November) clients loved coming in to commission bespoke pieces with little quirks: a secret drawer with a martini shaker in it, or an inkwell filled with a specific colour of ink. “You can fantasise about what you like and get someone to bring it to life,” he says.
His own London home — “a little flat, which I am very lucky to have” — is filled with handcrafted items that have meaning: a pair of candlesticks that belonged to his theatre-designer uncle Oliver Messel; cushions embroidered by British seamstresses; tables turned by fellow carpenters; a pair of bespoke British shoes made “in precisely the colour and style and shape I like”. Each of them feels special, because “there is something rather lovely about a piece that’s come from the hand of a human”, he says. “It resonates with the human spirit.”
The next part of Linley’s professional journey, he says, will be nurturing others who want to work with their hands. At Street Farm at Highgrove, the Gloucestershire home of the King, an old barn has been converted into the Snowdon School of Furniture, where Linley is going to help to mentor the next generation of furniture-makers. “I am 61 now,” he says, “and it’s time to step back and allow the young people at Linley do things how they want. I have worked all my life creating a brand. And I can now do things for the Prince’s Foundation that are enjoyable and freeing.”
Having made furniture for almost 40 years, Linley says he’s relishing the fact that crafts are becoming more mainstream. “Today you’ll hear Tracey Emin talk about craft, and even sportsmen. This morning on Radio 4 a commentator was talking about a footballer as a craftsman and comparing him to Picasso. That might have been a comparison too far — but there is now far more recognition of the skills needed to do something well. And that can only be a good thing.”

9 things you didn't know about Saint George
Tumblr media
Think of St. George and you're probably picturing a heroic knight slaying a ferocious, fire-breathing dragon.
As the country's patron saint, St. George's story is as iconic as his white and red flag.
But like many early saints, the exact details of his life remain a mystery.
Here, we separate fact from fiction to try to get closer to the truth behind the legend of St. George.
Tumblr media
1. St. George wasn't English ...
St. George might be hailed as a national hero, but he was actually born – in the 3rd century AD – more than 2,000 miles away in Cappadocia (modern day Turkey).
He is thought to have died in Lydda (modern day Israel), in the Roman province of Palestine in AD 303.
It is believed that his tomb was in Lod and was a centre of Christian pilgrimage.
2. ... and he wasn't a knight either.
Although St. George is often depicted in popular culture as a knight in shining armour, the truth is less fanciful.
Whilst St. George was depicted from the 11th century as a chilvaric knight or a warrior on horseback, it is more likely that he was an officer in the Roman army.
3. St. George was a martyr ...
Like many saints, St. George was described as a martyr after he died for his Christian faith.
It is believed that, during the persecutions of the Emperor Diocletian in the early 4th century, St. George was executed for refusing to make a sacrifice in honour of the pagan gods.
4. ... but he never visited England
Although St. George never visited England, his reputation for virtue and holiness spread across Europe and his feast day – the 23rd April – was celebrated in England from the 9th century onwards.
He became popular with English kings.
Edward I (1272-1307) had banners bearing the emblem of St. George (a red cross on a white background) and Edward III (1327-77) had a strong interest in the saint and owned a relic of his blood.
The St. George cross was not used to represent England until the reign of Henry VIII.
5. The dragon was added later.
The story goes that St. George rode into Silene (modern day Libya) to free the city from a dragon who had a taste for humans, but it’s a story that post-dates the real George by several centuries.
Images of George and the dragon survive from the 9th century – 500 years after his death.
Originally, these may simply have been representations of the battle between Good and Evil.
However, the story was developed and popularised in the Middle Ages in a compendium of stories about saints’ lives, The Golden Legend.
Tumblr media
6. St. George was a saint for 1,000 years before the 'holiday'
St. George was canonised in AD 494 by Pope Gelasius, who claimed he was one of those 'whose names are justly revered among men but whose acts are known only to God.'
A feast day of St. George has been celebrated in England for hundreds of years on April 23, which was possibly the date of his martyrdom.
Following the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, St. George's Day became one of the most important feast days in the English calendar.
7. England isn't the only country to celebrate St. George
St. George is truly an international saint and England is not the only country or region to claim him as its patron.
England shares St. George with Venice, Genoa, Portugal, Ethiopia, and Catalonia among others as their patron saint.
Many of these places have their own celebrations and ceremonies in his honour.
8. People turned to St. George for protection
During the Middle Ages, people believed that St.George was one of the 'Fourteen Holy Helpers' – a group of saints who could help during epidemic diseases.
St. George's protection was invoked against several nasty diseases, many fatal and with infectious causes, including the plague and leprosy.
From around 1100, St. George’s help was also sought to protect the English army.
In William Shakespeare’s Henry V, the monarch calls on the saint during his battle cry at the Battle of Harfleur in the famous “Once more unto the breach, dear friends” speech, crying “God for Harry! England, and St. George!”
Five hundred years later – during the First World War – a ghostly apparition of St. George was said to have aided British troops during their retreat from Mons, and the naval commander of the Zeebrugge Raid cited the saint as inspiration.
9. St. George represents those we honour
The Order of the Garter, founded by Edward III in 1348, is the highest order of chivalry in the country and Queen Elizabeth II is at the helm as Sovereign of the Garter.
To this day, St. George’s cross still appears on the Garter badge and his image is the pendant of the Garter chain.
In 1940, King George VI created a new award for acts of the greatest heroism or courage in circumstances of extreme danger.
The George Cross, named after the king, bears the image of St. George vanquishing the dragon.
The image of St. George also adorns many of the memorials built to honour those killed during World War One.

"A magical flower, sometimes called Yellow Eglantine, which only grows in the Blackrun. The flowers have incredibly potent healing properties, and are a component in a number of powerful potion recipes. They are coveted worldwide, but efforts to grow them outside their natural habitat inevitably fail."
"Their beauty and utility have turned these flowers into a powerful symbol of health and prosperity, but also greed and foolhardiness. Indeed, many a fool has scoured the land in search of these mystical flowers, only to never return. Those who do return are oft never the same."
Excerpt taken from Jophir El’phir, from their landmark compendium ‘Mystic Florae III.’
