Application Programming Interface (API)

What is API?

API is the acronym for Application Programming Interface, which is a software intermediary that allows two applications to talk to each other. It is a way for computers to share data or functionality, but computers need some kind of interface to talk to each other.

When you use an application on your mobile phone, the application connects to the Internet and sends data to a server. The server then retrieves that data, interprets it, performs the necessary actions and sends it back to your phone. The application then interprets that data and presents you with the information you wanted in a readable way. This is what an API is - all of this happens via API.

Building Blocks of API

There are three building blocks of an API. These are:

Let’s elaborate these blocks a bit.

An API needs a data source. In most cases, this will be a database like MySQL, MongoDB, or Redis, but it could also be something simpler like a text file or spreadsheet. The API’s data source can usually be updated through the API itself, but it might be updated independently if you want your API to be “read-only”.

An API needs a format for making requests. When a user wants to use an API, they make a “request”. This request usually includes a verb (eg: “GET”, “POST”, “PUT”, or “DELETE”), a path (this looks like a URL), and a payload (eg: form or JSON data). Good APIs offer rules for making these requests in their documentation.

An API needs to return a response. Once the API processes the request and gets or saves data to the data source, it should return a “response”. This response usually includes a status code (eg: “404 - Not Found”, “200 - Okay”, or “500 - Server Error”) and a payload (usually text or JSON data). This response format should also be specified in the documentation of the API so that developers know what to expect when they make a successful request.

Types of API

Open APIs - Also known as Public APIs. These APIs are publicly available and there are no restrictions to access them.

Partner APIs - These APIs are not publicly available, so you need specific rights or licenses to access them.

Internal APIs - Internal or private. These APIs are developed by companies to use in their internal systems. It helps you to enhance the productivity of your teams.

Composite APIs - This type of API combines different data and service APIs.

SOAP - It defines messages in XML format used by web aplications to comunicate with each other.

REST - It makes use of HTTP to GET, POST, PUT or DELETE data. It is basically used to take advantage of the existing data.

JSON-RPC - It uses JSON for data transfer and is a light-weight remote procedural call defining few data structure types.

XML-RPC - It is based on XML and uses HTTP for data transfer. This API is widely used to exchange information between two or more networks.

When to create an API and when not to

Its very important to remember when to create and when not to create an API. Let’s start with when to create an API…

You want to build a mobile app or desktop app someday

You want to use modern front-end frameworks like React or Angular

You have a data-heavy website that you need to run quickly and load data without a complete refresh

You want to access the same data in many different places or ways (eg: an internal dashboard and a customer-facing web app)

You want to allow customers or partners limited or complete access to your data

You want to upsell your customers on direct API access

Now, when not to create an API…

You just need a landing page or blog as a website

Your application is temporary and not intended to grow or change much

You never intend on expanding to other platforms (eg: mobile, desktop)

You don’t understand the technical implications of building one.

Es un término que describe un gran conjunto de datos estructurados y no estructurados que rodean a un negocio o mercado. Son datos que pueden ser explotados para mejorar la toma de decisiones dentro de ese contexto.

Los datos de este tipo cuentan con 3 características principales:

1.- volumen: una gran cantidad de datos. Se estima que en 2020 se han superado los 40 billones de GB en datos en el mundo

2.- velocidad: se refiere a la rapidez con que los datos son creados, accedidos, almacenados y procesados

3.- variedad: provienen de muchas fuentes como archivos, bases de datos, sensores, dispositivos inteligentes, etc.

Una base de datos es un sistema que convierte un conjunto de datos de gran tamaño en una herramienta que permite a los usuarios extraer más fácilmente la información

Esquema: es la descripción de la estructura de la base de datos

Subesquema es la descripción de una parte de la BD especial para un usuario

Modelo relacional

Es una forma intuitiva y directa de representar datos en tablas. En una base de datos relacional, cada fila de la tabla es una tupla o registro con un ID único llamado clave. So I know a lot of hearing people or people with some hearing loss just can't learn sign languages. That includes me, I have been attempting for many years but I can't. I can still make do in the hearing community, but I'm often alone. But what about deaf people, meaning deaf enough that they completely struggle in the hearing community, who just can't learn sign languages. Does that even happen? How do they communicate?

people with hearing loss who struggle with learning sign language usually learn it as a second language. Either because they were born hard of hearing and their parents pushed them to learn to speak or because they lost their hearing at later age. Learning a second (third, fourth) language works differently compared to acquiring the first one. 

When you are born 100% deaf and acquiring spoken language naturally isn’t an option, you usually learn sign language. As its your first language, the brain treats it differently and these people are usually able to learn it.

I say usually, because there are exceptions. Either a) the person in question has some additional disability or b) they don’t have enough exposure to sign language (it can happen in more isolated areas, for example). And these people are extremely varied in their approach to communication.

Does it happen? Yes, I have met people in both situations. Some use a simplified version of sign language, more suited for their needs, with limited vocabulary. Some use pictures or computer aplications to communicate. (for example, they point to a picture of food to indicate they want to eat). Some use mixture of home signs and words. I have even met a person who was not able to communicate at all, due to his serious disability.

A completely different situation occurs when someone is born hearing and they lose their hearing completely. These people do know spoken language. They usually get by with writing and using services like CART or live subtitles. Some are also able to learn to lip-read.

In all these cases, the communication can be problematic and lacking. It very much depends on who they are communicating with and too many hearing people are not respectful of unusual ways of communication. Social isolation is a huge problem for these groups and sadly, there is not much of solution for it. Technology helps and this situation is less likely to occur nowadays due to advances in medicine, education and social services, but it can still happen.

if you have Norton Antivirus or Norton VPN, delete the software ASAP.

Norton is automatically installing and running a cryptocurrency mining program in the backgrounds of their users. There is no text box asking to confirm the use of this program and is installed automatically, it runs during “downtime” on your computer . While the official announcement said that this program was exclusive to the US, international users are reporting it as well. We don’t know the exact scope yet.

To delete this program, must go into the files (Program Files/Norton) and delete the file NCrypt.exe. It will ask for the admin permission. (Some report having admin permissions on their computer but being unable to delete the program.) If the software is already downloaded to your computer, I would NOT recommend continuing to use Norton, as there is no guarantee that the .exe file won’t return in another update.

Tell your friends and family, reblog, spread this, please. It’s barely been getting any attention, and I worry that Norton is setting a precedent that other companies will repeat. However, if a large (or very vocal) part of the userbase continues to complain, it may make Norton or other companies think twice before mining crypto on your computer.

3Buenos Aires, noviembre 19 de 1977. — Considerando: 1º Que la Cámara Nacional de Apelaciones en lo Comercial, sala B, confirmó las resoluciones de fechas 27 de octubre de 1976 y 29 de diciembre del mismo año, del Mercado de Valores de Buenos Aires, S. A., por las que se denegó la inscripción de agente de bolsa al actor. Contra dicho pronunciamiento el accionante interpuso el recurso del art. 14 de la ley 48, cuya copia obra a is. 28/41, fundado en la inconstitucionalidad de la decisión apelada ya que el reglamento interno de la Bolsa de Valores excedería las facultades reglamentarias previstas en el art. 86, inc. 29, de la Constitución Nacional, en relación a la ley 17.811 (EL DERECHO, 24-1021), recurso que, denegado, dio motivo a la presente queja.

2.º Que la decisión del tribunal a quo posee adecuado fundamento para sustentar su razonabilidad y descartar la incompatibilidad que se alega sobre la base del art. 86, inc. 20, de la Constitución Nacional o de la distinta jerarquía constitucional de las normas en juego. A lo que cabe agregar que el art. 41 de la ley 17.811 faculta al Mercado a exigir otras condiciones además de las que impone la ley.

CONGRESO NACIONAL: Comunicaciones telefónicas interestatales. Tarifas. Responsabilidad de las provincias por el congelamiento de las tarifas. 

1.— Las comunicaciones telefónicas interestatales están sujetas a jurisdicción nacional, pues ellas constituyen el ejercicio del comercio, forman parte integrante del sistema nacional de postas y correos a que hace referencia el art. 67, inc 13 de la Carta Constitucional y tienden a promover la prosperidad, adelanto y bienestar general del país; en tal sentido, el origen local de in concesión que ligó a la actora con la provincia de Salta no es óbice para someter a la jurisdicción nacional los servicios prestados por ella.

2.— La tesis de la demandada, que pretende rescatar de la nacionalización operada a través de la interconexión de líneas, sus atribuciones en materia de tarifas, conduciría a admitir la concurrencia de los estados nacional y provinciales para regular el precio de los servicios, todo ello en detrimento del carácter inescindible de éstos, creando una notoria incompatibilidad entre las normas reguladoras de estas comunicaciones.

3.— La sanción de la ley 19.798 que reguló con carácter nacional los servicios interconectados (art. 3º) y las tarifas que rigen dichos servicios (art. 49)

constituyen el fundamento legal del reajuste dispuesto por el decreto 185/73 y torna impugnable, en punto a su validez constitucional. al decreto provincial que congeló las tarifas, por constituir un indebido avance sobre facultades delegadas. Ello no excluye, empero, la subsistencia de poderes locales de policía e imposición que no importen interferir en la jurisdicción nacional, para la cual la fijación de tarifas constituye un medio necesario (ver decretos 9306/72 y 185/73), pues integra la ecuación financiera propia de la nota de regularidad del servicio público.

4.—  La responsabilidad en que incurriera la provincia demandada por disponer el congelamiento de tarifas es de carácter extracontractual y es aplicable entonces el art. 4037 del cód. Civil que establece como término de prescripción dos años, computables, en el caso, desde la fecha en que los servicios sujetos a tarifa fueron prestados, es decir a partir del hecho que creaba el título de la obligación a favor de la actora.
