Concubine Walkthrough - By BongBong (9.5/10)
Tumblr media
What if it was all a dream, and that was ok? An entire world dedicated to one love. There is so much darkness in this story. So many messed up questions. AI. Gender identity. Good people dying of illness. Innocent people dying by poison. Giving up on life. Giving away your life for someone else. Every bad thing ever happens, but this is such a happy story. Happiness feels more real when you earn it, after all.
I'm not going to crack any jokes for this one. This particular webtoon has won several prestigious awards. It was written and drawn with passion and talent, and it also happens to be an epic obsessive love story.
It's about a girl who falls into a dating game. A loser. A girl who lost her dad. Her future. Her chance to go to college. She tried to jump out of a window one day, and a friend with a crush on her saved her. Another friend offered her a chance. A life in a virtual world.
She takes it.
Tumblr media
She is reborn beautiful. The Emperor of the fake world loves her. Worships her. She was placed in the body of an awful villainess, but she's so wonderful that the Emperor immediately notices she is a new soul.
Try to remember.
The Emperor is an AI being. Yona, the player, came in with two friends to forget.
Tumblr media
Yona falls in love for real. Yona shows "Sunshine" all of the games quests and tips. The Emperor doesn't really exist. She basically creates him. She names him.
Her reality causes madness in him.
Tumblr media
Yona is naive at first. Maybe there is a way to bring Sunshine with her....but there isn't.
Pain and war and lies and betrayal bursts out of her naive fantasy.
Tumblr media
The game repeats 103 times.
The Emperor begins to think he is a toy, and Yona is only capable of loving the male player who saved her.
The world ends in fire.
Tumblr media
Doha, another player, does love her.
Doha can be what the Emperor can NEVER be. Sunshine just can't go to the real world, but Doha can log off....the game gets corrupted.
Nobody can log off now.
Memory loss. More obsession. Confusion. Yona forgets details about her real life. Time keeps going backwards. Poor Sunshine is powerless to save his true love, who can no longer remember why she wanted to forget in the first place.
Tumblr media
He uses the secret admin room to destroy everything. Everything. Yona and her game friends are trapped. Scientists on the outside are saving them, or trying to. Sunshine decides to make Yona hate him. Then he will use the admin room to delete every trace of himself, so no one but Yona will ever know he existed. That way Yona can be his forever, in a twisted way.
Tumblr media
It's not real. It shouldn't matter, but that's not how people work. The AI humans in the game adapt. Grow. Change. Obsess. The sweet ones that die get loving funerals.
They exist.
Yona does something selfless.
Tumblr media
The Emperor does not succeed.
Tumblr media
Yona gives her body to Ranhee. The evil original concubine who was just a miserable puppet. She gives that pitiful, but interesting, character a new reality. She stays behind, in the game with Sunshine. He might be the Emperor, but to her he's Sunshine first.
Doha wakes up, and the game is modified one last time. A time acceleration button is pressed, and the world AI simulation doesn't end until the end. The heat death of that universe. The quantum computer that made the game is destroyed, but in that time Yona lived her whole life. The game was allowed to grow and become a real world. In that second a new humanity lived their lives fully.
Yona was truly happy in that blink of an eye.

this might be weird to ask on a writing blog but do you have any manga recs?
yeah i got some recs! i'm gonna assume you mean less talked about titles rather than more well-known but quickfire popular recs i have are: chainsaw man, fullmetal alchemist, jjba, fruits basket, jjk and hell's paradise. but onto my other recs:
seinen
children of the sea**: a troubled teen named ruka embarks on the summer adventure of a lifetime after meeting two boys raised by dugongs at her dad's aquarium in the middle of a mysterious event taking place in the ocean.
the summer hikaru died: it's been months since yoshiki's childhood friend and secret crush, hikaru, went missing in the mountains for a week. hikaru's the same as usual, with his jokes and silly rambles and yet, yoshiki can't shake the feeling that whoever came back from that mountain, it wasn't hikaru. much to his horror, it wasn't. but rather than face reality and grief, yoshiki decides to play along with "hikaru's" act (body horror)
dorohedoro**: in a world where there are humans and magic users, humans have it rough being virtually treated as second class citizens. day after day, year after year, magic users come to the human realm to experiment on them with their magic. and after having his head turn into a caiman, kaiman, wants to get it back in blood and have his true form restored (body horror)
witch hat atelier*: in a world full of magic and witches, it's always been normal human girl coco's dream to be one. but after accidentally discovering a truth of this world and her mom getting caught up in the spell, coco becomes an apprentice of witch qifrey. (it was recently announced there's an anime in the works!)
skip & loafer**: desiring to become a government official to revitalize her hometown in the japanese countryside, iwakura mitsumi's first step to accomplish this goal is by going to a uni prep high school in tokyo. she's got a foolproof 10-step plan to boot! but of course, life hardly ever goes as plan, not even for a prodigy (mc's aunt has great trans rep)
jousei
sign of affection*: as someone deaf all her life, yuki has dealt with discrimination in both small and broad strokes. nor has she ever experienced romance. this all changes when she meets backpacker itsumi, a guy who goes to the same uni. just as he opens her world, she opens his
debu to love to ayamachi to***: after waking up in a hospital with no memories to her name, plus sized yumeko is told she is there after surviving a suicide attempt. the thing is, yumeko isn't sure why when she's just so beautiful! with a strong desire to live life to the fullest, yumeko decides to do everything the past her was to afraid to do. all the while it is revealed that her suicide attempt was more of an attempted murder... but who could have wanted to kill her?
my love story with yamada-kun at lv999**: nothing is worse than getting cheated on especially after akane invested a lot of time and energy into her shitty ex's gaming hobbies. but through gaming, not only does akane find herself healing, she managed to get herself a pretty cool boyfriend too
NANA**: 2 women, 2 different lives, 1 name shared. komatsu nana is quick to fall in love and after a series of less-than-lucky relationships, she finally has someone she thinks is the one. abandoned by her mother and her ex leaving her band, osaki nana hasn't had the easiest life. but on the same night, on the same train, these two women meet and their lives become deeply intertwined
shoujo
a condition called love*: when it comes to romance, hotaru's never experienced it besides stories of her friends relationships. but she soon finds herself about to experience the whirlwind of a lifetime when hananoi, the most popular boy in school, asks her to be his girlfriend
a bouquet for an ugly girl***: as her class' resident big girl, hana isn't expecting a blossoming spring in her high school career. and she's okay with that. she has everything she needsー otome games and gardening. but after her class' pretty boy catches her in the midst of changing the class flowers, their lives become a bit more intertwined
uruwashi no yoi no tsuki: yoi is quite popular at her school because of her neat short hair, beautiful face and overall princely appearance. in fact, it's gotten her dubbed 'prince' many times. but when the other prince of the school finally meets her, cupid's arrow quickly knocks him on his ass
shounen
frieren**: a manga that picks up after the journey has ended. the demon king has been defeated and the heroes have saved the day after 10 years of traveling together. 10 years? that's not even a 10th of elf mage frieren's life. but as her companions begin dying one by one of old age, she finds herself desiring to learn more about humans and the short yet impactful lives they still manage to have
dungeon meshi*: when a dungeon raid goes terribly wrong and laios' sister gets swallowed by a dragon, those that remain in his party decide to get it back in blood by saving laios' sister before she gets digested. in the mean time, there's nothing wrong with gordon ramsay-ing miscellaneous ingredients found in the dungeon along the way, right?
and if you like manhwa or would be down for some manhwa recs these are titles i don't see getting recommended enough
concubine walkthrough: a scifi & philosophical spin on the otome isekai genre that asks 'what is reality truly?', 'is your life any less real if you found out all your experiences were a simulation?' and 'what is reality to you?' where protagonist lee yona finds herself stuck in a VR edition of a game she only played once
a wicked tale of cinderella's stepmother: usually when someone wakes up in the body of a villainess, she's the same age as the protagonists. mildred, on the other hand, is stuck in the body of this story's cinderella's stepmother. with no husband and three daughters to take care of, there's only one thing she can really doー build up her daughters' sisterly bonds with one another and make sure they marry into good families (or that they can at least live lives they're happy with)
tricked into becoming the heroine's stepmother: at least mildred got the body of an important character, daisy on the other hand? she's in the body of an NPC you never even see in the story. bright side? this is a story she helped write and after meeting the presently six year old protagonist's father, she and father of the year decide to team up for the ultimate mission: making sure his daughter never meets any of the love interests
inso's law: ham dan-i is in a bit of a pickle when she wakes up and her new school uniform is completely different than the one her mom bought weeks ago. there's a drop dead gorgeous girl next door who claims to be her childhood best friend. even worse, like something straight out of a drama, there are four heavenly kings that rule her school. by the end of the day, dan-i has no other choice but to accept the fact........ her real life has somehow turned into a web novel. even worse, she's a side characterー the main character's best friend
webtoons
plum: in a world where fruit stacking is a major sport, little plum decides to be the very best like no one ever was and moves to the big city to compete in the fruit stacking games along with making some friends and rivals along the way
webtoons that are probably popular enough if they have hardcover copies at my local bookstore but i wanna talk about it anyway
cursed princess club: as the youngest princess of the pastel kingdom, gwendolyn loves her family. her protective papa, her oldest sister maria who often awakes to woodland creatures doing her hair. her older sister lorena who makes flowers bloom with her every step. and her younger brother jamie who's so pretty, he sparkles. and they adore her just as much. but things come to a very reality shattering halt when their father introduces maria, lorena and gwen to blaine, lance and frederick, the princes of the plaid kingdom and gwen overhears frederick call her ugly, something she's never heard in her entire life. somehow, gwen finds comfort in a club full of cursed princesses (and one prince) who teach her how to start loving herself again

Hi! Hope that you're doing well!
I have two yandere recommendations, Concubine Walkthrough, a “I'm trapped in a game world and I don't know why”, where there are two yanderes, it's available on Tapas, and The Secondary Male Lead was actually a girl, where there is one yandere but a very intense one...
Hope you like this!
Tumblr media
I feel kind of bad because I know I got this ask right before I ended up posting the ask for The Second Male Lead is Actually a Girl, but I couldn't post this alongside THAT ask because of Concubine Walkthrough, and it took me like 5 billion years to read it.
Concubine Walkthrough though, is genuinely amazing and is probably one of the best game isekai stories I've read, since it gives a lot of explanation on how things like the concept of AI, how various game play elements in game work and a lot of other factors. That being said though, after reading the entire thing, there is actually only one yandere- not two (though it does seem like there is two, not going to lie), unless you really squeeze that definition of yandere. This webcomic is complete with 120 chapters though it is worth the read.
The story starts with our main character, Yona at school as she watches her friends play a game called Concubine Walkthrough, a game with high difficulty with only one good ending. She plays it for a bit and while she isn't as into it as her classmates, gets a good idea of how the game works. A few years later, as she's going to college, Yona sees an advertising for a new version of Concubine Walkthrough for a VR system. Soon after, she wakes up in to the body of the main character, Rahnee. Not wanting to deal with this, she attempts to disconnect her avatar from her body by jumping into the pond and waking herself up, only to fail and be saved by a eunuch named Sunshine. Not able to leave the game, Rahnee is forced to do the side quests that appear in the game to reach the game's good ending so she can leave. As the story goes on, she continues to befriend the various NPCs in the world, using her smarts and cunning to get as many points as she can. As she continues, Rahnee has to face Lili, the concubine that leads to a lot of her deaths in the game, who actually turns out to be another player. Rahnee and Sunshine's relationship begins to grow with each other, but we find out that Sunshine is actually the emperor, with a motive for Rehnee. We also get to learn about one of Rahnee's childhood friends, an imperial guard, Youngjung, who wants to bring Rahnee out of the palace and is completely suspicious of Sunshine due to the way he seems to want to use her for his own entertainment. The two have a bet for Youngjung to keep it a secret from Rahnee in he is the emperor, promising to release the two if he can keep a secret within a month. Lili eventually reveals herself to be the player to Rahnee, as a boy named Sangjae, who knows a lot about the game. She decides to work with Rahnee to complete the game. At some point, Youngjung is killed as a way to protect Ranhee, causing the world to start over and revealing that he is a player. As it turns out Youngjung is a player as well, but has forgotten his real life identity completely, even forgetting that he himself was from another world. Rahnee learns that Sunshine is actually the emperor, becoming completely devastated and at some point resenting him for killing people in front of her, despite the pleas of her trying to keep everyone alive. As the story goes on though, all the characters slowly start to remember how they got into the world and who they were before. The emperor also seems to be planning something, being able to speak to the "creator" of the world, trying to plan something that will eventually lead to the end of the game. We do eventually find out each of the player's backstories- Yona promised his father that she would go to college but ultimately was rejected, leading to her despair at her late father's wishes. Youngjung or Doha, was originally a soccer player that was crippled permanently after an accident. He fell in love with Yona after she protected him, and it grew stronger when he became Youngjung. Sangjae was actually the son of the CEO who created the game Concubine walkthrough, and was shunned by him because of his love of girly things. Eventually all of them meet in the school when Yona contemplates on suicide, with Sangjae offering to bring them all into the virtual world to escape their worries. Meanwhile, we find out that Youngjung is planning to create a coup to overthrow the Emperor, planning to let Rahnee become the empress to not only complete the last mission, but also so that he and her could be together forever once he becomes the emperor. During this time we find the true events of the story.
The emperor has been in a time loop for a very long time, initially seeing that his world has strange glitches due to the game devs coming in to check on the world. Eventually, he comes to meet Rahnee, who reveals right away that she's not from this world. The two talk about her world, how people were able to love whom they wanted, women were able to study, and how nice it is. The emperor longs to be in this world as his own family was often killed or had very little rights, and he asks her to bring him to the new world. She also shows him the AI in charge of the world to show him what this world looks like. Meanwhile, Lili makes a deal with his father, as their bodies are being used to collect information to improve the game, forcing the game to restart and keep them trapped until they finish the last mission of making Rahnee the emperess. Rahnee and Youngjung also start to merge their personalities and memories of their in game avatar and their real avatar, to the point where their memories and desires slowly start to change. The emperor becomes more and more angry as Rahnee continues to avoid the question of if she can bring him to her world, eventually learning that his world is actually a game. In anger, he glitches out the game, while Lili and Yongjung storms the emperor. Rahnee watches as her friends die before them, not knowing about the deal that Lili made, and ends up dying from an arrow. This causes the game to go back in time, forever looping the emperor in it. The other three periodically lose their memories every time the game resets, with the emperor remembering in every timeline. For a long time, the emperor wasn't able to help the three, due to the game being broken, slowly driving him into despair, until the devs were able to update it, giving various game updates that would allow the three to complete it. As a result, the emperor continues to gain hope that he would be able to break her out of the game, feeling extreme guilt that he was the one that caused her to be in this mess (to some degree) with this story being the last loop, and him having to keep secrets from her to prevent her from losing her last loop. In the end, Yona is able to complete the route, allowing her to bring back Doha and Sangjae into the real world, but choosing to give her original body to OG Rahnee while keeping herself in Rahnee's body to stay with the emperor. Sangjae is able to make the virtual reality machine (where Concubine Walktrhough World resides) running and removes the timeloop, allowing the system to continue developing past the world that was created. Doha, Sangjae and OG Rahnee live together afterwardss, while Yona and Sunshine live happily in their world.
I skipped a lot of the characters in this story because while I do like them, it's too long to summarize everything and it's probably better for you to experience it yourself plus I left out a lot of the theory work for alternate virtual realities and various arcs that lead to the point.
First off, as I said, this story is honestly really amazing- I love game isekai stories that make strong use of their mechanics and worldbuilding, and it even goes so far as to explain alternate reality theory which is incredibly interesting. While this is the second time I've seen this type of Time Loop story (the first time was in Raising a Sacrifice) it is done extremely well, and it really makes you feel for Sunshine. Honestly, the entire time, I wasn't able to really tell if the emperor honestly loved Yona since he always did something either suspicious or incredibly cruel, pretending that Yona was simply a plaything to him, while in reality, he was trying to reenact the plan so that she and her friends could go home. The ending where OG Rahnee goes into Yona's body is kinda of... well, it's a good ending for Yona and the Emperor, but it seems a bit strange to me, but alls well that ends well.
Yona as a protagonist is actually pretty amazing. She's headstrong and clever when she needs to be, but also kind to those around her even when they have betrayed her. Her view of believing that her experiences with others, even if the people around her are fake, are real, leading to her treating everyone as a person and not as a character is done very well, and she can also be pretty comedic when need be. She trusts incredibly heavily in the emperor even when she is bitter that he betrays her, genuinely trying to believe that the Sunshine she knew is the real deal. It must have been really hard for her to realize that she was the reason why everyone is trapped in the game, and still comes out on top.
I love Lili as well. Initially she seems like a kind of stuck up person whose only goal is to finish the game regardless of what collateral happens, but she turns out to be a great ally to Yona later on. Sangjae view of the world is pretty much that he views everyone to be just game characters- a way for him to achieve all of the missions and gain the most points in the world, as nobody is real, which is a understandable way of viewing the game. He knows the game inside and out and his backstory of his father shunning him for liking girly things is rather sad, but out of the main three he is the most opportunistic and knowledgeable of the game, something of great benefit to the other two players. Overall, he is a great ally and a funny antagonist when he needs to be, even feeling great guilt when he remembers why everyone is trapped in there in the first place.
As a yandere, Youngjung's obsession is shown throughout the story, growing as it goes on and he grows more and more protective over Rahnee. Yongjung and Doha's love for Rahnee/Yona is compounded, thus leading to his obsessive behavior, though it isn't until much later in the story that Youngjung decides that he will kill the emperor and marry Rahnee so that he could be by her side forever. It makes sense for him as he has always been suspicious of the emperor since the beginning, as he uses him to enact his plan and seems as if the emperor actually doesn't care at all about Rahnee (which is what the story makes him appear is what he's like). In the end though, he does fail and return to the real world with OG Rahnee, so in some cases, it does seem like it works out well, even if he does lose the original Yona in the process. He ends up killing a lot of people at the palace when he stages his coup, even when the only reason he could was to go into an arrange marriage with another women, he tells Lili that he will simply have her assassinated so that he can be with Rahnee and let her become empress. I did find it very cool that he basically became Yongjung, so much so that he completely forgot that he was Doha.
The Emperor is... well, I don't think he's really a yandere. He is extremely devoted to Yona, no doubt, but he mostly seems to break the game out of revenge and not necessarily out of love, which is understandable as he realizes his entire existence is simply a game for the three other players before he instantly regrets it as he watches Yona die in front of him. He's tormented inside of a timeloop as a result until the end, where he's able to be with Yona until death. Initially it does seem like he is one as he kills people that get too close to her, but also states that she sees her as just "part of his concubine" and that the only reason she keeps her around is because she's interesting (which turns out to be an act so that Yona would continue on the right track to finish the game). Even if initially he broke the game as a reason to keep her inside of this world (again, mostly out of revenge, but probably not much out of love), he does do everything to get her back to the real world, and is even willing to simply die at the end as punishment for his sins. If you think about this in this way, I think he's a lot more of a redeemed yandere if you really squint, since he spends the entire story rewriting his wrongs. I wouldn't say he really is one though based on the reasons that were stated above.
The artwork is absolutely amazing in this series. It doesn't quite look like the standard isekai art we normally see, but it is incredibly beautiful, slightly reminding me of what old Chinese arts look like (which is where the world is set into) the grain and the backgrounds, along with the expressions of the characters are well made too. It's all just so beautiful.
Overall, there's so much of this story that's really good, from the unique artwork and story to the amazing characters. I would very highly recommend reading it because it is very very good.

Every thing i read in Febubary
Tumblr media
I Became the Tyrant of a Defense Game
The MC of this novel is so fucking silly cause who tf names their kid Ash 'Born hater' Everblack? Like i'm being for real right now, his mom literally called him her 'little hater'. Love that
So, a Korean gamer who was streaming about this old strategy game on hardmode where if you fail once the game resets. The guy got isekaied the moment he finished the game on stream and right in the middle of the battle field too, tough luck hater.
Before we go more in depth about this story I would recommend that you read the novel version, the manhwa seems a little tacky and i've seen alot of readers complain that the manhwa makes everything look cheaper.
So, one of reasons why it made on to my reading list is because it was recommended by my guy friends who has great taste for this kinda genre. It drew him in because it used actual strategies that he would also use in his game instead of throwing around random lingo in hopes to cater to gamers. Like every battle was truly suspenseful and the author isn't afraid to show that every victory requires a sacrifice. Also I've seen people praise the character development of this novel, everyone starts out a little stereotypical and annoying but they get their own story arcs to shine.
Another thing i like is that this story is about the fight against the end of the world. Like i know alot of stories with that kind of premise but rarely do i ever feel the urgencey as strongly as i do with this story. The last stand against a sea of monsters waiting to consume the world and the young prince who's tasked with the question of remaining human or turning into a monster to save his world. I love me some classical fantasy
Anyways, it has 500+ translated chapters and it's all free. Go read it now.
The problematic prince
Tumblr media
If i'm being honest here i can think of at least 10 more manhwa crown princes who are even more problematic than the ML, especially that guy from the abandoned empress, yeah fuck you blueberry head.
So the story premise is the typical bad boy x good girl story trope. Our prince Bjorn keeps getting pestered by his ex wife whom he doesn't want contact with and our FL is being sold off to the highest bidder in society, shinnaigans happen and so the are married. That's the very shorten version of the plot
First thing that i noticed, the vibes. It gave off so much Edwardian, turn of the century energy that i adore. From the costuming to the city streets and the interactions between common people. Love it.
The author seems to have been blessed with amazing writing skills because oh my god did the writing style made me swoon. Erna, our FL, can be classified as one of those soft girl heroines but i feel like she's more than that. She knew what she had to do to keep her loved ones safe and always strived for better, she's not a cunning villainess nor a simpering coward. Erna never settled and kept enduring and trying new ways to connect with others around her even when she's being labelled as a home wrecker.
Also the nobilities and medias reaction to their marriage was incredibly realistic, i see alot of manhwas with rags to riches stories or men marrying women with horrendus reputations but never mention how powerful the influence of the peoples opinions. Here you can see that Bjorn and Erna's relationship, while rocky still holds strong, it seemed like they are truly in love and happy with their choices. Yet media still condemns her as a witch, a slut and a disgrace towards the royal family. It even lead to a attempt on Ernas life. Which shows you how easily the public can be whipped into a frenzy just because of a narritive that she is other woman.
The spirit queen
Tumblr media
If i even find the author of this manhwa i would like to make out with them and have their babies, cause this kind of genious deserves to be preserved.
Do you want a story with proper drama? Do you want something that actually keeps it's momentum and doesn't half ass shit half way through? Do you want themes about power and how it turns people into the worse version of themselves? Well look no further. The spirit queen has your back
Another thing that i loved about this story was it's sympathy towards the working class. The servants in this aren't the stereotypical happy go lucky loyal maids that you see in manhwas, they also aren't evil back stabbing people either. They know that their lives are worthless when it comes to the upper classes so they do all that they can to survive and to protect their loved ones. And i respect that as hell, even if it made them do less than savory things.
Also i recently learned that the author, Tutu-nim, wrote and drew this manhwa on their own. A true girlboss
Run away with me, girl
Tumblr media
Remember all those times you said that you can be a better husband for the FL? Well this is a lesbian romance based on that premise.
It's a bittersweet romance story about two girls who were high school friends meeting each other after 10 years. Maki, who is till doing her graduate courses while living with her mom and lamenting her loneliness, while Midori is engaged and pregnant and living that perfect, normal life she wanted. Of course everything is not as it seems, and that's what the author wanted to explore in the coming chapters of the story
It's a short read, about 16? 17? chapters. But the author manages to do so much in that short amount of time. Every character felt so real and complicated. At first when you see Midori and the way that she treated Maki after their reunion, it's not hard to come to the conclusion that Midori is just playing around with Makis feelings. Especially with the way that she flirts and then reminds Maki of her engagement to her boyfriend.
This manga has the most realistic, hut wrenching potrayals of abuse, love and hate i've seen in a while. And if i'm being honest there is a high chance i would do the same if i was stuck in their situation.

another thing i really enjoy about concubine walkthrough is that in their author's note the author was like yeah i only work five days a week i take lots of breaks and i prioritize avoiding burnout and its like fuck yes you do king. i see you reusing every piece of jewelry you've ever drawn. i see you with those sketchup backgrounds. i SEE your CUSTOM BRUSHES FOR EVERY CHARACTER'S BANGS. CUT THOSE CORNERS KING!!!!

Seriously if you're looking for a good long read with amazing art to boot, please read Concubine Walkthrough. You may think it's just about the usual court drama, but it's so much more than that. Like 10 more things. I cannot reveal any of it because it's all spoilers 😭
But trust me on this ok 🥺 Everytime you get to a point where you think 'Oh, so it's actually this!' it hits you with a new twist that makes you pog or pull at your hair. It's a matryoshka doll of mysteries. Honestly I don't know how to go back to reading those one dimensional webtoons after this 😔 Like eating crackers after a 5 star buffet.

One of the best manhwa I have ever read!

The story was perfect in every sense, the art, the pacing, the plot, the plot twists, the characters, their journeys. It was an amazing experience to read this. I'm in awe of the author for being able to put all of it together.

What are some of your favorite manga of all time?
Oh this will be one of the easiest asks I've ever received! You've got me all hype, anon!
Tumblr media
Fruits Basket
Wanna get me to talk for hours? Mention Fruits Basket. This was the first manga I ever read back when I was still in elementary school and I've never grown out of my love for the series. I will always have a spot for this manga but it's honestly perfection to me.
I love the characters, the messages, the themes and the emotional depth this manga has made me feel over the years? I honestly wish I could experience Fruits Basket all over again. This is without a doubt my favorite shoujo manga of all time. I love all the characters, I love all the ships. Some of my favorite characters off rip have to be Tohru, Shigure, Hatsuharu and Arisa and Saki. But make no mistake I adore Yuki and Kyo and so on and so forth.
This series does such a great job in such a complicated subject matter concerning neglect and abuse in a way that humanizes the abuser without using said humanization to justify their shitty actions. You leave those moments understanding how that person became how they are but can still completely acknowledge how terrible they are. How you don't have to forgive that person for what they did. And that, if you do forgive that person, that doesn't mean you're just letting bygones be bygones and being kumbaya with them. You can forgive and forget or you can forgive and never forget and that's okay. Your forgiving and moving forward for yourself, not them. And that's one of the things I really liked in the series.

Fullmetal Alchemist
Another series you can get me talking for hours about. You will catch me watching video essay after video essay analyzing this story. I was so into FMA during middle school, one of my moms even bought me the games and made it habit to occasionally buy me the volumes! This is without a doubt, the best shounen has to offer. Quality female characters? Amazing action scenes? Stunning romance? Banger after banger with so many panels I can still recall perfectly.
My favorite volume is definitely volume 15! Because of the manga, Brotherhood is my preference when it comes to the anime adaptations. It has all the homies in it. Another series I wish I could just start from the beginning again with no memory of the source material. These brothers and their friends have altered the chemistry of my brain.

NANA
Still believe that one day Yozawa will grace us with her beautiful art and storytelling all over again. NANA was my first ever jousei read and my dive into jousei as a whole. Until that point all I had consumed were shounen and shoujo so the maturity of the series was one I wasn't expecting. I consumed this series when I was about in early to late middle school and it was so much fun to read.
Now that I'm in my late 20s, holy hell is this hard to binge the way I used to because the themes, the struggles of the character and the realism of those struggles are hitting a little too close to home now. So I can only do NANA in small doses now haha. I even got both of my moms into NANA. Which isn't too impressive when one of my moms has watched the anime of every manga I've mentioned on this ask, but my other mom is NOT an anime fan and she loves NANA so much.

Children of the Sea
Oh my goodness, you definitely oh it to yourself to read this manga. It's not a long a read by any means with only 5 volumes and 43 chapters but it was such a pleasure to read. Maybe this bias comes from someone obsessed with the ocean (which my url definitely implies) and the life teeming underneath the surface but wow this was truly an experience. I watched the movie first and then read the manga, and I'm not sure if that'll shape anyone's viewing experience differently but I do wish I had read the manga first. But both are truly great to check out.
If you want a story about a girl meeting two boys raised by dugongs, this is the story for you. One of my favorite aspects of this read were the side stories labeled Testimony of the Sea. It adds so much to the story without even directly influencing the plot as you see all the strange phenomena that take place in the sea leading up to this mysterious event drawing in our protagonists and what will continue well after its conclusion.

Skip & Loafer
Currently ongoing and a series I was not expecting to like as much as I did. I'm one of the people who got into sukirofa after the anime dropped. 2 episodes in and seeing the absolute beauty and grace of how the staff handled the protagonist's transgender aunt, I had to give this a read and I do not regret in the slightest. This is such a great series and a perfect example how one utilizes 'don't judge a book by its cover'.
Characters you meet at first glance? It only takes a chapter or two before their layers are peeled back and you see how much went in to crafting them and making them more complex than meets the eye. A perfect example of this is the character Mika.
But my favorite chapter has to be ch 29 where you learn what made Nao decide to come out and transition. If you haven't read this series, I won't spoil it, you have to read it for yourself. Prepare for a monthly update schedule, because once that day of the month pops up, it's amazing to see how the sukirofa fandom comes together to scream on twitter and tumblr.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
The series that gave birth to the greatest hater in anime history. Araki truly drinks and leaves no molecules every time a part comes out. Another ongoing series I didn't expect to like as much as I did. But it's become a series close to my heart since diving into it after I got over my initial hesitance with the art style. Honestly JJBA's art style really grows on you, especially as you see Araki's art and writing develop so spectacularly.
You get equal parts continuous story and standalone adventure. You do need other pieces of the pie, but each part still feels so rich and in-depth and bright and colorful. You don't feel like the new JoJo and characters introduced are extensions of previous existing ones or usurpers that have stolen the panels away from other characters. It's like watching a torch be passed down from JoJo to JoJo, generation to generation (which it technically is since this story follows the descendants of the JoJo that started it all, Jonathan Joestar).
Araki's biggest source of writing inspiration came from how he felt watching Prince concerts. How the story of the concert would suddenly flip and give you a whole new experience. I feel he truly has that down with JJBA.

Concubine Walkthrough
Can't believe I even forgot to add Concubine Walkthrough, so take this quick addendum. This is one of the best manhwa I've ever read in my life and not enough people talk about it. I'm working on a post right now all about why I recommend it.
If you're a fan of sci-fi, romance and want to read an otome isekai romp that subverts your expectations? Please read this manhwa. It's The Matrix mixed with historical Korean fiction (and of course, otome isekai at its finest).
I loved loved LOVED the philosophy behind the story, the themes. The discussion of what reality is and choosing what reality means/is to you. Just because your entire life is a simulation, does that make your entire life up until that point irrelevant? Simulated it may be, your joy, your pain, your love, all of that still felt real, right? There were so many things I never considered about that very topic until I read this series and I feel like more people should give it a go. It's not that long a read (only 128 chapters for the main story with some extra bonus content on the side), please please PLEASE read Concubine Walkthrough if you haven't already.

If any of you who follow me like ORV, pleasepleasePLEASE read Concubine Walkthrough. If you love meta stories, the question of the line between “character” and “person”, and [redacted] [redacted] [redacted], you will love it. If you make it to the first plot twist I promise you’ll be hooked!

Yall it’s been half a week, I’ve finished 3 other manga, but the Concubine Walkthrough brainrot is still here 😭
I’m simply not over Sunshine? Between Lili and Dooyak, the story pretty much tells you never to trust appearances so I had a feeling he had his reasons. But I wish I did hate him when I was reading so I wouldn’t be so hung up about it.
At the end of the day, yeah, they all get their happy ending but man. Did they have to basically make a more heart-numbing version of that reddit lamp storu
