Why did Apollo favor the trojans in the Illiad?
So, dear Anon, I've been thinking about how to answer this question since I got it a couple days ago and I think I kind of want to make something clear before I get into it.
The Iliad by itself as a poem only covers some of the events that occur in the final year of a long protracted conflict that had been brewing for at least two decades and was an active war for ten. Within the space of the Iliad itself, the motivations and affairs of the major players are often referenced but there are many, many parts of the story that are not there because they belong to a different story cycle that has been since lost or was never recorded with words. In the space of the Iliad Apollo's motivations are questioned a lot - his pride is questioned by Poseidon who thinks Apollo should be just as angry at the Trojans as he considering Apollo was treated equally as poorly by Laomedon while they worked together. His honour is questioned by Hera who chastises him for taking the Trojans' side when he'd proclaimed that Achilles would live a long life and prosper at Thetis and Peleus' wedding. His own sister calls him a coward for refusing to fight when Zeus gives permission for the gods to go wild on the battlefield. For all that there's this image of Apollo in the Iliad as some staunch and unwavering protector of the Trojans, believe it or not, I largely think of Apollo as neutral in the war.
Which, I suppose, comes back to the question - why did Apollo favour the Trojans? The truthful answer is that I don't know. The Iliad and all its connected stories isn't something I've done enough research on to have an answer or a reference to an answer off the top of my head. The reasoning I'm aware of is that Apollo was a Patron God of Troy and really a god doesn't need any reason besides that to protect his people but it's not like Apollo abandoned the Greeks either. Calchas is the biggest example of that I can point to - descended directly from a priest of Apollo and one who attributed his mantic power to the god, Calchas was pivotal in ensuring the Greeks even got to Troy in the first place.
From a personal perspective however, I think Apollo was more dedicated to the house of Priam than he was the city of Troy itself. Apollo's affection for that house and all its members ran deep - from his admiration of Hecuba and Hector to his love and attempted courtship of Cassandra to his blessings given to Helenus, Deiphobos, Cassandra, Troilus and even his partnership with Paris - Apollo loved the house of Priam. When you think about the times Apollo lashes out against the Greeks, it's generally because they've done some nonsense to earn his ire. The plague was caused by Agamemnon disrespecting his priest, his aid in the slaughter of Patroclus was because he didn't respect him, his minor grudge against Diomedes too was because he tried to test Apollo's mettle and well, the less said about Achilles the better. Apart from his obvious favouring of Hector in the skirmishes, Apollo doesn't really oppose the Greeks. He has a ton of reasons to by the time the Iliad rolls around, including avenging the death of two of his sons, but he remains mostly satisfied with conducting his father's business and overseeing the war from a somewhat professional perspective. To me, it's always been less about Apollo caring about the fate of Troy as a city itself and more about him just really wanting to protect the people in the city that he's come to love and respect.
Of course, I encourage you to take my words with a big tablespoon of salt - like I said, I don't really know enough about the facts in particular to give a solid, confident answer but I can give you my interpretation of it. Maybe consult someone like @littlesparklight for a more comprehensive and grounded response 🤔
#ginger answers asks#Thank you so much for the question even if my answer was somewhat lacking lmao#For the record btw Apollo doesn't stay mad at Diomedes forever either - he pretty much drops it after the Funeral Games#and helps him get rid of the cursed ass Palladium when he goes to consult an oracle about it lmao#Apollo just generally doesn't fuck with people who have too much hubris for their own good#Like he r e a l l y hates that#But Apollo more or less went wherever he was called and did whatever needed to be done#to keep the war flowing and progressing the way it should#I always find his lack of retaliation against Achilles to be a point of extreme interest#Yes he eventually aids in Achilles death together with Paris but Apollo refrained from getting vengeance against him for years#Depictions of Apollo being held back when Achilles assaults and kills Troilus always ALWAYS intrigue me#And it's always what I think about when I hear people talk about Apollo hating the Greeks or favouring the Trojans#Apollo didn't have any beef with his family at that time and he certainly didn't care enough about any particular human to go against his#family - he says so himself when Poseidon is goading him to fight and yet I cannot help but think about how he kills Neoptolemus#Interesting man indeed#apollo#the iliad

Oracle of Delphi: speak, stranger.
Agamemnon: Sacred Oracle, I wish to cast off to war, but I have angered the gods with careless words, and my ships remain huddled in the harbor, unable to strike forth as the sea beats them back. Tell me, how can I break these stale winds?
Oracle: lord apollo may grant you his wisdom, but first you must tell me your name.
Agamemnon: Agamemnon, son of Atreus, King of Mycenae.
Oracle:
Oracle: lol.
Agamemnon: Oh come on.
Oracle: lmao even.
Agamemnon: Every goddamn time.
Oracle: i can help, but you're not gonna like it.
Agamemnon: Yeah, story of my fucking life.

Theoxenios 7.2025 - The First Oracle Consultation
"The Delphic oracle functioned one day a month for eight months of the year, from early spring to late autumn. Consultation days were likely accompanied by major Delphic festivals, though we only have record of a few of these. Petitioners could consult only about a single issue, probably involving two standard questions. The cost paid for consulting the oracles was pelanos – a type of bread." - Delphic Calendar via Pytho.Notion
The Temple of Hyacinthus observes the Oracle Consultation once a month on the 7th day; starting in Theoxenios and concluding in Poitropios. With the exception of Apellaios, due to Hyakíntha. The Oracle Consultation is also not observed during any major lunar event such as a full moon, solar eclipse, or lunar eclipse.
How to Celebrate
If your Okios honors Lord Apollo in the form of a shrine or altar, it is appropriate to replenish offerings and pour libations to him on this day.
In the same vein, fresh incense, or a comparable offering, should be provided.
Set time aside to invoke, honor, and pray to Apollo Thearios (Apollo of the Oracle).
Oracle Consultation is an auspicious time to engage in divination. The Temple of Hyacinthus primarily engages in tarot, but any form of divination is acceptable.

Obsessed with the way Evadne's relationship with Apollo is described. Obsessed with the way Apollo was especially gentle with her because she was sheltered, hidden away and hadn't had any sort of experience with love prior to Apollo (and due to it being described as her 'first learning Aphrodite's joy' through Apollo', it was probably her first time even being attracted to someone). Obsessed with the way when she runs away, she stops in a violet patch to give birth. Y'know, violets, very famously the flower so strongly associated with Aphrodite that they were used in love potions? Those violets. Obsessed with the way that when Apollo realised his lover was going to have to deliver their child alone, he sent BOTH the goddess of childbirth and ALL THREE OF THE FATES to help and support her. Obsessed with the way that Apollo sends snakes to feed his baby honey straight from their fangs because Evadne abandons their son out of straight primal fear when her stepfather finds her and how the description of that honey is 'sweet venom' [ἰός] of the bees and is DEFINITELY a poetic pair/pun with [ἴον] aka violets and that every single thing about this relationship, conception and birth is a complete and utter fairytale down to Evadne's insanely overprotective stepfather having an immediate change of heart when he learned Evadne's child was an actual, legitimate Son of Apollo and the babe, after being cared for by his dad's honey-fanged snake buddies, was found perfectly healthy five days later swaddled in a blanket of violets (y'know the flowers so strongly associated with Aphrodite that they were used for lo-) and they called him Iamus aka Boy of the Violets which is AAAAAARRRR I AM GNAWING AT MY ENCLOSURE
Iamus was made of love. Everything about him was surrounded by deep and profound love and like, let's not even talk about his whole Thing of when he came of age and was like "I need to find out what my purpose is" and he literally had a Disney Protagonist moment where he ran out into the wilds and was like "Father!! Grandfather!! Tell me what I'm supposed to doooo!!" and then APOLLO FUCKING ANSWERED AND LED HIM TO ONE HIS TEMPLES ENTIRELY BY TALKING WITH IAMUS AND LETTING HIM FOLLOW HIS VOICE FOR THE WHOLE JOURNEY LIKE -
What do y'all know about the kind of SSS tier romantic escapades Apollo had fr?
#ginger rambles#NO BECAUSE WHAT DO Y'ALL KNOW ABOUT APOLLO AND EVADNE FR#They're a MAD underrated couple and their story is what everyone wishes Hades/Persephone was#Evadne actually WAS sheltered and overprotected because she was a daughter of Poseidon explicitly given to Aepytus to watch over#And Aepytus to his credit wasn't actually a bad man or anything he just took his job very very seriously#Super pious guy - even though he was positively incandescent when he found out Evadne was pregnant he didn't hit her or anything#He just was like “Get me my HORSE I am going to consult the GODS about my DAUGHTER'S HARLOTRY”#Evadne was fucking terrified of him though she hid that pregnancy like her life depended on it#And the minute she heard horse hooves even though she had just finished giving birth she dropped Iamus like he was molten and fucking ran#I could only imagine Aepytus having set up a baby shower or something cause he was overjoyed by the oracle and Evadne gets home thinking#she's going to get Dungeon'd only for Aepytus to hug her and be like “You should've told me you were seeing Apollo sob emoji sob emoji”#God I'm sure Evadne had a bunch of trauma to work through with her stepfather changing his whole entire attitude on a complete#Apollo doesn't directly interfere with their lives after Iamus is born up until Iamus comes looking for him but he was definitely keeping#a very close eye on them all through their lives#Ugh I'm sick I'm so sick in the head thinking about them#apollo#evadne#iamus#greek mythology#ginger chats about greek myths

pls my UK mutuals what was that like mid 2000s CBBC show with the shitty CGI and the edgy serious guy in the woods who had black hair black goatee (?) black clothes and could maybe turn into a raven and made kids do some random puzzle games and then a literally impossible obstacle course that would fuck them all up and crush their dreams one by one
#and after he’d crush these children’s dreams the guy would put his cloak around him and turn into a raven and fly into the woods#crushed*#this popped into my head this morning after like 17 years of laying dormant and i need to know#i wish i had more mutuals on this blog so i had a wider demographic of oracles to consult

I know everyone knows the story of Actaeon and how he met a terrible fate by stumbling upon Artemis bathing in her forest but did you know that Actaeon was Apollo's grandson? That his father was Aristaeus, lord of the bees and the rustic arts and his mother was Autonoe, daughter of Cadmus and princess of Thebes?
Did you know he was trained by Chiron? That he was considered a hunter so skilled his talent was considered divine, that he was his parents' only child and that he was loved?
Did you know the grief that consumed the household when word of Actaeon's fate reached them? That Cadmus cut his hair, that Harmonia wept and was disconsolate and that his parents... well, Autonoe walked the length of the forest, keeping a sharp eye out for her son, but all she saw were the scattered bones of a fawn. Aristaeus too, had heard his son was torn apart and so fruitlessly, foolishly searched for the bones of a man. (There was none to be found)
Did you know that it was Actaeon's ghost, unhappy and unburied, trapped on the earth, who leaned over his sleeping father and told him of his fate? "You will not find me as you knew me, gather me as a stag." And Aristaeus immediately woke his wife and told her the truth, and together they grieved all the night long.
(Did you know that this is why Aristaeus abandons Boeotia? He could not stand the sight of it and so he went to Ceos. And there he slayed the dog-star. And there he became a healing wind. All in the name of his only son, that foolish, beloved Actaeon.)
#ginger chats about greek myths#greek mythology#I'm fascinated by Aristaeus tbh#He's very underrated as far as sons of Apollo go but to my understanding#He's the only one of Apollo's sons that's as multitalented as their old man LOL#Actaeon is also a very sad story#Actaeon only ever knew one side of his family - they never told him that Artemis was his family#In the Dionysica Nonnus writes that Actaeon intended to bring glory to his family by taking Artemis as a bride#And in Callimachus' Hymn they say that his parents thought he was going to JOIN Artemis' hunt and they didn't question him missing#Because they thought he would be running free in the wilds alongside Artemis and her nymphs where he surely belonged#I feel especially bad for Autonoe - she passes by the bones of that deer so many times - almost like she's on the verge of recognising#that those bones belong to her son but she never picks them up - so fixated on looking for her son's body as she knew him#And of course Aristaeus takes it hard too#Some people say this tragedy was enough for him to abandon all of Greece in his mourning and that he took sanctuary in Sardinia#A lot of them say he consulted his father's oracle at a loss for what to do and that it's Apollo that leads him to Ceos#Interestingly - Ceos is also where Cyparissus is said to have lived by some authors and as we all know#Cyparissus had a beloved stag that he cared for like his own heart#It's just very very interesting how some of these things connect to each other#apollo#actaeon#aristaeus#autonoe#cadmus#harmonia
