Is Social Media Content Moderation, SILENCING FREE SPEECH?
Tumblr media
Or Protecting Civil Rights
By: Ki Lov3 Editor: Toni Gelardi © Feb 6, 2025
While some argue that content moderation restricts free speech, it actually serves as a safeguard—reinforcing civil rights and equality, just as hate crime laws protect individuals in physical spaces. In society, laws are in place to prevent hate crimes and protect vulnerable groups from discrimination because they recognize that certain speech and actions cause harm. If we protect people from hate-fueled attacks in real life, why should we allow them online, where harm can be even more severe? Social media has become a central part of public discourse, shaping conversations, movements, and opinions, but it has also made it possible for hate speech, harassment, and misinformation to spread.
Tumblr media
Cyberbullying and hate speech are linked to increased depression, anxiety, and self-harm. A study from the Journal of Medical Internet Research found that victims of online harassment are more than twice as likely to engage in self-harm or suicidal behaviors compared to those who are not targeted. Unlike in-person bullying, online harassment is persistent, anonymous, and amplified, often making it inescapable.
Increased rates of anxiety, depression, and self-harm have been connected to hate speech and cyberbullying. A study from the Journal of Medical Internet Research found that victims of online harassment are more than twice as likely to engage in self-harm or suicidal behaviors compared to those who are not targeted. Unlike in-person bullying, online harassment is persistent, anonymous, and amplified, often making it inescapable.
Why Moderation is Not Censorship
Just as businesses can deny service to abusive customers, social media companies have the right—and obligation—to moderate harmful content. This does not silence opinions; rather, it ensures that discussions remain inclusive. Without it, hate speech and harassment push marginalized voices out of public discourse. True free speech necessitates an environment where people can engage without fear of abuse. Free speech laws prevent the government from suppressing speech, not private platforms from enforcing policies to create a safer environment.
Tumblr media
Effective moderation should:
Apply rules consistently to all users.
Focus on harm reduction, not suppressing debate.
Be developed with input from civil rights experts.
Include an appeals process to ensure fairness.
In conclusion, through the prevention of online spaces from becoming venues for harm, social content moderation safeguards civil liberties. We shouldn't let hateful attacks online, just as we wouldn't tolerate them in person. By guaranteeing that all voices are heard, the creation of safe online environments enhances free speech rather than diminishes it.

WAKE UP BITCHES ISKALL DROPPED AND IMMA EVALUATE IT-
Especially considering I was never a fan of him in the first place I will have no bias in this horse race
Video:
youtube
The entire video genuinely sounds like a more constructive Dream allegations video minus the detective outfit and 2hrs of rambling and a serious lack of evidence due to privacy reasons which kind of, so lightly sound like an excuse
He claims that when he was alerted to these allegations, he was given a 1hr and 30 minutes deadline to produce proof to the Hermits he didn't do anything
He then contact the police and a lawyer
Girl we are going to pause right here because stunning that you contacted the police and a lawyer but if you didn't do the things that you're alleged or doing then you would have proof that you didn't do those things like the whole situation could it take in 20 minutes
If he didn't do even one of the things he was accused of it would have taken less than the hour and a half he was given to screen share his screen with multiple Hermits and just start scrolling through Discord
Then he goes on to say that he wasn't given enough time etc... And that they'd rushed him.
There have been MULTIPLE sources stating they tried for MONTHS to get into contact with the Hermits.
But IT IS odd that when he was "notified" of his wrongdoings, he first went to the police and a lawyer, DESPITE a hermit telling you first. If everyone knows then it's not a matter of privacy anymore.
Like personally if that was me, I'd have jumped into Discord no questions asked, shown the proof THEN contacted a lawyer for defamation or other relating charges
It's very unusual for someone to go the legal route in the situation not because it's never been done before it's because it's a waste of money and time. They will not gaf. Most cases in the similar situations come out with inconclusive responses and the person does not come out with a response themselves as their is seemingly enough evidence to smear their name and they would not like to proceed if there's that much evidence.
And it's VERY clear he's going the "innocent till proven guilty" route. Which is fair enough.
But, and I cannot stress this enough, HE'S NOT BEING ACCUSED OF TEXTING MINORS
He's being accused of having inappropriate relationship with multiple members of his audience/community and moderators, and using his Discord server as the catalyst for it all.
Which is especially alarming as some have said he's a moderator for them, which IN SOME PLACES is illegal to have a boss/employee relationship.
But it genuinely sounds like he's missing the point, as a content creator you have to hold yourself to higher responsibilities, accountability and credibility then the rest of your community. And even if it's not illegal, it's EXTREMELY INAPPROPRIATE for a content creator to have any form of relations with a fan, WITHOUT it being for certain types of videos (like challenges or servers) or for commissions/work
So unless they were gaining genuine service or having particular videos, having that sort of PM relationships with your fans is inappropriate, especially if your working with them or not. It's not appropriate at all.
He then blames it on cancel culture. WHICH GIRL-
I've seen alot of things pumped out of Hermitcraft fans but "cancel culture" IS NOT ONE OF THEM
Blaming it on cancel culture is the biggest excuse, genuinely.
He acts like it was public execution, even through its been CONFIRMED from MULTIPLE SOURCE that people tried for months to get into contact with the Hermits, so the END OF THE INAPPROPRIATE RELATIONS WITH MEMBERS OF YOUR COMMUNITY SHOULD HAVE BEEN WARNING NUMBER 1-
Like imagine all the people you allegedly had relations with suddenly all wanted to cut contact, did you think they would just disappear?
Cancel Culture, is when you're cut from your career for doing something OBJECTIVELY stupid, as it becomes a growing trend. It's unserious and often a social media trend.
Iskall's situation was not apart of cancel culture because it's genuine. And he knows it's genuinely enough to take legal action, meaning that in some capacity he did do at least 20% of what he's been accused of, to have grounds for a cases
So he's done SOMETHING it's just not what he thinks it is/isn't like what's allegedly
Then he goes on to talk about a developer he defended after they scammed him and we're generally not nice.
I have yet to see this developer anywhere and to my knowledge they have not pushed any allegations onto him.
He instead brings up this developer, because he defended them when they did something that was seemingly objectively wrong and it's meant to be a display of his good character
Personally I would have not used that as an example. Using an example of you defending someone when you in the same breath claimed that they had wronged you is putting the notion in your fans and audiences heads that even "if I do something wrong you should defend me because it was only a silly little mistake and it's the right thing to do"
And it was unnecessary. Completely unnecessary. He wants to be a display of a good character yet also once privacy so that's why he shares a personal story of him defending someone who wronged him so show that he's a good person who gives second chances? But then implies in the video that he had to give that person more than one chance?
And I think Goodtimeswithscar said it better then me. GASLIGHTING he's hardcore gaslighting.
It is similar to what Mr Beast, did with his allegations. Actually it's almost a copy.
Instead of completely addressing it he only addresses what he wants to in the face of privacy. He then brings up all the good things he's done to make him seem more trustworthy and like a better person even. And then he pays someone to investigate himself to find himself not guilty.
Iskall it's literally doing the same thing. He only addresses what he wants to because of privacy even though he knew about the situation before he got a lawyer, he uses the worst example possible to show that he's a trustworthy person, and then he pays for a lawyer himself to prove that he is not guilty.
Having the police and lawyers is meant to make it seem more 'fair'. But as we all know the police will only do so much before a lawyer has to step in. And if you're paying for the lawyer yourself obviously the lawyer is going to have bias because they want to do a good job because you are paying them to do a good job.
It's the most hardcore gaslighting I've ever seen.
And worst of all he might actually get away with it, because like Mr Beast he has a younger audience who will not understand how much he's trying to Gaslight them.
So to conclude, he's doing a Dream / Mr Beast remix on a smaller scale because money. And he's getting lawyer involved and unless they're suing for defamation, then there's nothing to sue for because no one is accusing him of pedophilia they are accusing him of having inappropriate relationships with his audience which is a big no-no for content creators..
Now for Stressmonster
Girl dug herself either a hole or a grave and now has to lie in it.
Tumblr media
They tried to protect her dignity and integrity by not stating the reason why she left but it's now clear to many why she also left.
And yet again I would like to make it very clear like no one is accusing him of actually committing a crime (UNLESS HE LIVES IN AN AREA THAT MAKES IT ILLEGAL FOR BOSS AND EMPLOYEES/COWORKERS TO HAVE A RELATIONSHIP) he's being accused of having inappropriate relationships with members of his community and moderators, which is not a very good thing if you're a content creator
Its not a jailable offence unless *see point above*, and to be like "I'm standing with you 100% of the way!", is more telling about your priorities than 'what is right'
They act as if hermitcraft is a cult, that kicks members out for not conforming.
But I am entirely on the side of HermitCraft in the fact that I would indeed, kick Iskall out/get him to resign, if he'd had inappropriate relations with mods and fans REGARDLESS OF IF THEY WERE ADULTS
Because the main audience for Hermitcraft ARE CHILDREN. KIDS. NON-ADULTS
AND HE'S ENDANGERING THEM AS WELL AS THERE COMMUNITY EVEN IF IT'S NOT MINORS HE'S MESSAGING
LIKE GROWING UP IN A COMMUNITY WHERE IF YOU EVENTUALLY REACH AN ACCEPTABLE AGE YOU GET TO HAVE A PRIVATE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CONTENT CREATOR YOU'VE BEEN IDOLISING FOR YOUR CHILDHOOD ARE YOU INSANE?
Overall he's digging himself a grave and handing out shovel.
And also. To be sosososososo clear.
NEVER. SEND. DEATH. THREATS. TO. ANYONE.

A wild west Highland gale was raging on Sunday morning, just as the weather birds had predicted, and interminable waves of dense Scotch mist and rain were driving across in front of Algy's refuge beneath the tall bamboo screen.
Tucking himself back tightly against the bamboo stems, Algy was suddenly reminded of a poem. He agreed that he liked it when "stuff leaked" outwith the lines, with gashes of smudgy colour, but he also agreed with the ancient Greek poet Hesiod's advice "‘observe due measure; moderation is best in all things", and things, in his opinion, were getting a wee bit immoderate on this particular morning.
Pushing himself even further back into his shelter, Algy reflected that while he did indeed like to feel part of the place, the experience was undoubtedly a great deal more enjoyable on some occasions than on others… and recalling a sarcastic expression by Rizzo the rat, he muttered "Thank you for making me a part of this," as he tried to make himself vaguely comfortable while he waited for the storm to pass.
And staying inside the lines Is fine, but… I like it when stuff leaks… When the blue bird and the blue sky Are just one blur of blue flying, And the feeling of the feathers in the air And the wind along the blade of wing Is a long gash of smudgy colour. I like it when the flowers and the sunshine Puddle red and yellow into orange, The way the hot sun on my back Lulls me – muddles me – sleepy In the scented garden, Makes me part of the picture… Part of the place.
[Algy is thinking of the poem Colouring In by the contemporary English poet Jan Dean.]

Been a minute since I did any work in my original story Blood in Moderation. So some sketches ;p
This is Ellen Luca, she’s the wife of Romulus Luca- upstart insurgent leader, notable enemy of the crown and the empire at large. She’s not of any notable family line but possess a unique life magic aptitude. She’s wanted by Vanberg authorities, preferably taken alive, due to her uncommon affinity. She has a twin brother—non magical—named Nathan Adamson who is also a high up member of Romulus’s group.

Meta rolled out a number of changes to its “Hateful Conduct” policy Tuesday as part of a sweeping overhaul of its approach toward content moderation.
META announced a series of major updates to its content moderation policies today, including ending its fact-checking partnerships and “getting rid” of restrictions on speech about “topics like immigration, gender identity and gender” that the company describes as frequent subjects of political discourse and debate. “It’s not right that things can be said on TV or the floor of Congress, but not on our platforms,” Meta’s newly appointed chief global affairs officer, Joel Kaplan, wrote in a blog post outlining the changes.
In an accompanying video, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the company’s current rules in these areas as “just out of touch with mainstream discourse.”

CDA 230 bans Facebook from blocking interoperable tools
Tumblr media
I'm touring my new, nationally bestselling novel The Bezzle! Catch me TONIGHT (May 2) in WINNIPEG, then TOMORROW (May 3) in CALGARY, then SATURDAY (May 4) in VANCOUVER, then onto Tartu, Estonia, and beyond!
Tumblr media
Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act is the most widely misunderstood technology law in the world, which is wild, given that it's only 26 words long!
https://www.techdirt.com/2020/06/23/hello-youve-been-referred-here-because-youre-wrong-about-section-230-communications-decency-act/
CDA 230 isn't a gift to big tech. It's literally the only reason that tech companies don't censor on anything we write that might offend some litigious creep. Without CDA 230, there'd be no #MeToo. Hell, without CDA 230, just hosting a private message board where two friends get into serious beef could expose to you an avalanche of legal liability.
CDA 230 is the only part of a much broader, wildly unconstitutional law that survived a 1996 Supreme Court challenge. We don't spend a lot of time talking about all those other parts of the CDA, but there's actually some really cool stuff left in the bill that no one's really paid attention to:
https://www.aclu.org/legal-document/supreme-court-decision-striking-down-cda
One of those little-regarded sections of CDA 230 is part (c)(2)(b), which broadly immunizes anyone who makes a tool that helps internet users block content they don't want to see.
Enter the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University and their client, Ethan Zuckerman, an internet pioneer turned academic at U Mass Amherst. Knight has filed a lawsuit on Zuckerman's behalf, seeking assurance that Zuckerman (and others) can use browser automation tools to block, unfollow, and otherwise modify the feeds Facebook delivers to its users:
https://knightcolumbia.org/documents/gu63ujqj8o
If Zuckerman is successful, he will set a precedent that allows toolsmiths to provide internet users with a wide variety of automation tools that customize the information they see online. That's something that Facebook bitterly opposes.
Facebook has a long history of attacking startups and individual developers who release tools that let users customize their feed. They shut down Friendly Browser, a third-party Facebook client that blocked trackers and customized your feed:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/11/once-again-facebook-using-privacy-sword-kill-independent-innovation
Then in in 2021, Facebook's lawyers terrorized a software developer named Louis Barclay in retaliation for a tool called "Unfollow Everything," that autopiloted your browser to click through all the laborious steps needed to unfollow all the accounts you were subscribed to, and permanently banned Unfollow Everywhere's developer, Louis Barclay:
https://slate.com/technology/2021/10/facebook-unfollow-everything-cease-desist.html
Now, Zuckerman is developing "Unfollow Everything 2.0," an even richer version of Barclay's tool.
This rich record of legal bullying gives Zuckerman and his lawyers at Knight something important: "standing" – the right to bring a case. They argue that a browser automation tool that helps you control your feeds is covered by CDA(c)(2)(b), and that Facebook can't legally threaten the developer of such a tool with liability for violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or the other legal weapons it wields against this kind of "adversarial interoperability."
Writing for Wired, Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University speaks to a variety of experts – including my EFF colleague Sophia Cope – who broadly endorse the very clever legal tactic Zuckerman and Knight are bringing to the court.
I'm very excited about this myself. "Adversarial interop" – modding a product or service without permission from its maker – is hugely important to disenshittifying the internet and forestalling future attempts to reenshittify it. From third-party ink cartridges to compatible replacement parts for mobile devices to alternative clients and firmware to ad- and tracker-blockers, adversarial interop is how internet users defend themselves against unilateral changes to services and products they rely on:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/10/adversarial-interoperability
Now, all that said, a court victory here won't necessarily mean that Facebook can't block interoperability tools. Facebook still has the unilateral right to terminate its users' accounts. They could kick off Zuckerman. They could kick off his lawyers from the Knight Institute. They could permanently ban any user who uses Unfollow Everything 2.0.
Obviously, that kind of nuclear option could prove very unpopular for a company that is the very definition of "too big to care." But Unfollow Everything 2.0 and the lawsuit don't exist in a vacuum. The fight against Big Tech has a lot of tactical diversity: EU regulations, antitrust investigations, state laws, tinkerers and toolsmiths like Zuckerman, and impact litigation lawyers coming up with cool legal theories.
Together, they represent a multi-front war on the very idea that four billion people should have their digital lives controlled by an unaccountable billionaire man-child whose major technological achievement was making a website where he and his creepy friends could nonconsensually rate the fuckability of their fellow Harvard undergrads.

Being a content moderator on Facebook can give you severe PTSD.
Let's take time from our holiday festivities to commiserate with those who have to moderate social media. They witness some of the absolute worst of humanity.
More than 140 Facebook content moderators have been diagnosed with severe post-traumatic stress disorder caused by exposure to graphic social media content including murders, suicides, child sexual abuse and terrorism. The moderators worked eight- to 10-hour days at a facility in Kenya for a company contracted by the social media firm and were found to have PTSD, generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD), by Dr Ian Kanyanya, the head of mental health services at Kenyatta National hospital in Nairobi. The mass diagnoses have been made as part of lawsuit being brought against Facebook’s parent company, Meta, and Samasource Kenya, an outsourcing company that carried out content moderation for Meta using workers from across Africa. The images and videos including necrophilia, bestiality and self-harm caused some moderators to faint, vomit, scream and run away from their desks, the filings allege.
You can imagine what now gets circulated on Elon Musk's Twitter/X which has ditched most of its moderation.
According to the filings in the Nairobi case, Kanyanya concluded that the primary cause of the mental health conditions among the 144 people was their work as Facebook content moderators as they “encountered extremely graphic content on a daily basis, which included videos of gruesome murders, self-harm, suicides, attempted suicides, sexual violence, explicit sexual content, child physical and sexual abuse, horrific violent actions just to name a few”. Four of the moderators suffered trypophobia, an aversion to or fear of repetitive patterns of small holes or bumps that can cause intense anxiety. For some, the condition developed from seeing holes on decomposing bodies while working on Facebook content.
Being a social media moderator may sound easy, but you will never be able to unsee the horrors which the dregs of society wish to share with others.
To make matters worse, the moderators in Kenya were paid just one-eighth what moderators in the US are paid.
Social media platform owners have vast wealth similar to the GDPs of some countries. They are among the greediest leeches in the history of money.

i know AI isn't going anywhere and i also know there's nothing i can do to prevent someone from stealing my work; that's an accepted risk with sharing it publicly. i'm not going to stop - my issue with AI has always been with the surveillance, the environmental impact, and the exploitation of workers.
if you really want to have a conversation about AI, these are the things we need to be educating ourselves on and talking about. Emily Bender wrote it best in one of her #AIHype take-down threads:
When automated systems are being used, who is being left without recourse to challenge decisions? Whose data is being stolen? Whose labor is being exploited? How is mass surveillance being extended and normalized? What are the impacts to the natural environment and information ecosystem?

I initially thought the entity plot in DR was extremely goofy, like what do you mean a computer “controls the very truth itself” (<- extremely annoying grad student voice), and what a hysterical thing for the CIA of all agencies to be concerned about, but honestly I’m on board with it now because after rewatching dead reckoning again, it is so clearly a movie responding to concerns about like, digitally mediated medical + political disinformation during covid, and the fact that the background tension animating the film is that every government wants to get control of the entity in order to centralise and use this disinformation mechanism does feel very much like a response to the political responses to the pandemic (particularly from the US/UK/Canada/etc). obviously I’m not expecting any deeper engagement with like the political production of truth and knowledge or anything like that but this anxiety feels more cohesive and legitimate than I initially figured
