Chime.in has clearly hit escape velocity, at least judging from the number of followers I suddenly got yesterday. It's worth a look, if you haven't seen it yet; it's like the love child of Twitter and Quora.

Apple Patent Shows Visual Content Sharing Between iPad and iPhone. Apple Wants to Beat HP's WebOS Sharing Feature with Something Cooler: When HP first introduced the TouchPad's "Touch to Share" feature earlier this year, fans and industry pundits alike applauded them for their innovation. Well, it appears that Apple has been working on something similar for about 18 months now. Of course in typical Apple fashion, the concepts envisioned appear to be far more creative as they implement gesturing with Physics Metaphors. In one example, as noted in our cover graphic, you'll be able to "pour out" files from one device to another in a manner that mimics that of pouring water. Apple lists a host of other examples that include sound effects. One such example includes an iPhone sucking up files from an iPad with the sound effect of a vacuum cleaner. While this newly proposed feature will certainly apply to all of Apple's hardware, it will also eventually apply to other devices such as televisions, whiteboards, projectors and more. Whether this ends up being a spin-off of Apple's forthcoming "AirDrop" feature or not remains to be seen. For now, it's Apple adding some badly needed personality to the boring process of file sharing.

Growth Through Content Sharing
Tumblr media
Currently I am in the process of writing up my Hootsuite Module 5 content for my client. This part of the client project is simply the collection of information gathered thus far from the other client submissions, but more specifically geared towards content coordination and implementation.
After giving my recommendations on ways to optimize their social media content and to help reach their goals and objectives through the resources given through several social media outlets, this planning stage of the content distribution will be a step in the right direction. Being aware of the tools and resources each platform offers to share content and preplan in an efficient and productive manner, will make it easier logistic wise for the small social media team they currently have. As well as, taking advantage of ways to advertise towards their desired audience so that they can gain more followers or promote more engagement in content shared.
I believe that this will definitely be an adjustment for my client, mostly because they are so use to just dishing out information instead of actually trying to engage their audience. This information given in this module will assistance them with more hands off ways to reach those goals and objective, but also open up their eyes to the effects that their post have on their audience; shining a little bit of light on some chance that may need to take place if they desire a certain outcome for their organizations social media.

Building your personal brand through content sharing - what works on Linkedin, Twitter and Facebook
Tumblr media
Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin are my primary social tools for sharing and consuming content. Over time, I've found that it is possible to increase engagement by tailoring the content shared on each channel to match consumers expectations and by using channel specific tagging features to increase discoverability.
Like many people, I actively differentiate who I connect to on each platform. Also, I use each platform for different purposes and therefore I'm more open to content that is aligned with my purpose:
.nobullet { list-style-type: none; }
Platform Connections Use case Content type Tagging Facebook Friends & family
Entertainment
Connecting with friends
Irreverent
Provocative
Serendipitous
#Hashtags
@Mentions
Twitter People in the same industry
Realtime breaking news
Follow industry thought leaders
Personal brand building
Industry news & commentary
Personal growth advice
Personal philosophy
Leadership advice
#Hashtags
@Mentions
$Stock
Linkedin Professional network
Network building
Job hunting
Personal brand building
Macro trends
Career advice or professional development
#Hashtags
@Mentions
In addition to aligning content by channel, you should personalize content and leverage the tools each channel provides to make your content discoverable. Don't just share an article with the standard headline. There are several ways to make the post more visible and engaging:
Summarize – extract the key thought, idea or soundbite in 100 words or less. Alternatively, summarize the key theme in your own words. Your ability to reduce a long article to its most fundamental concept is a signal or your subject knowledge.
Add your opinion – is this an article that you strongly agree or disagree with? Why? In general, you should not post an article when you don't have any opinion on the content. The best articles are thought provoking and nuanced. Perhaps the article presents a novel concept in a well researched and well written format. Provide a genuine reaction in your post that demonstrates your personal brand and world view.
Understand how the channel works - use appropriate #hashtags, @mentions or stock symbols - $AAPL. Many expert users will use filtering tools that trawl for specific keywords or subjects. Appropriate tagging or keywords within your post will help it gain visibility in these filtering tools and increase the chance of new followers.
I've found that across the board people engage more with content from trusted sources. I suspect there are multiple reasons but certain sources write excellent content which is well researched and well written. Examples include Harvard Business Review and Forbes. These sources do particularly well when shared on Linkedin or Twitter.
One other factor for engagement is timing. Engagement with your post is correlated to how fast you share after the article is published. People see the same popular articles posted in multiple places but will only read or like an article once. Sharing quickly will get you followers who want to be first to the latest content.

Things I have been reading II
CES 2011: Trends, Implications for Marketers
The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is a "harbinger of emerging media experiences, and offer insight into evolving consumption habits." Here are three:
TV's third dimension = sociability
Moving the backchannel - Twitter, Facebook, rolling news - from the second (laptop/phone/iPad) screen on to the first (TV). "Socialized TV is especially important for marketers as it increases real-time viewing of broadcasts that may otherwise be eroded by DVRs. It also opens a door for brands that can't afford to be in the broadcast but would like to engage (hijack?) the audience anyway. By participating in these pop-communities, brands can be social around relevant premium broadcast content."
Syncing gives way to sharing
"A number of devices allowed consumers to simply move a single experience across phone, TV, or tablet. The shift seems subtle from syncing, but actually requires a considerably different design process for brands that are playing in the app or content space." I see this connecting closely with 'omniscreening' (#01) - essentially all media channels need to work on all or near-all screens and devices. Telly may still be better on a big screen, or IM on something with a physical keyboard, but it all needs to be able to move everywhere. ... "Brands tend to struggle with the relationship between a channel and its content, pursuing the "media agnostic" Holy Grail of content. If any technology underpins the need to understand the impact of channel on content, it's experience shifting. A consumer might accept limited functionality of your brand experience on their phone, but if brands want them to fully embrace it, they'll need to design for an experience that evolves by medium."
Narcissism
Significant that it's now not just software makers but the hardware guys producing devices designed for democratic content creation - e.g. "Casio's Tryx camera flips around so you can see yourself while you film yourself in still images or video. The Motorola Xoom, Samsung Tab and many other would-be iPad competitors integrate front-and-rear cameras into the usual suite of content creation tools."
Edge magazine - War Porn, part II
Looking at the effect that computer games' portrayals of war has on players' perceptions. Particularly important in a context where war itself is being virtualised - not just in the elevated terms of Baudrillard's essay The Gulf War Did Not Happen, but in a straightforward material sense of drones in Afghanistan being deployed by young men with gamepads in Nevada, using interfaces designed by videogame designers.
If we want to ask about the effect that VR has on people, this is the limitspace that has to be interrogated.
Edge also make a point about the limited and one-sided depictions of war presented in these games. The games industry likes to claim it's bigger than film nowadays, but clearly there's still some work to be done before it can claim to be equal as an art. One of the games discussed - Six Days in Fallujah - does, however, seem to be taking significant steps in the right direction.
c.f. How novels came to terms with the internet (Guardian, 15 Jan 2011)
"It is what the internet lures out of us – hubris, daydreams, avarice, obsessions – that makes it so potent and so volatile. TV's power is serenely impervious; it does all the talking, and we can only listen or turn it off. But the internet is at least partly us; we write it as well as read it, perform for it as well as watch it, create it as well as consume it. Watching TV is a solitary activity that feels like a communal one, while the internet is a communal experience masquerading as solitude."
Also some interesting comments on how online is individualising compared to television - yet, among millions of people each being their special unique selves, we find "the individuality we hold most dear turns out to be indistinguishable from the individuality of countless others." Online "Our judgments matter, but primarily in aggregate, which makes us not so different from the faceless mass of television's audience as we are sometimes led to believe. The main distinction is that the crowdsourced are active collaborators in the commodification of their opinions, while TV viewers just get to sit on their duffs."
