AKA: “How I could tell that the “personal depressive episode” has settled down"

- Mother makes some kind of bitter remark out of the blue - I’m just unfazed and simply answers back in a passive-aggressive way that shuts her trap. >:)

In detail: this morning we were driving and there was a small car in front of us.

It was this kind, the “Smol 500″ FIAT:

I just looked at it for a moment and then said: “Well, if our Panda will ever be a goner for good, guess this one can be a good replacement, size-wise.”

(For the records, this is our Panda)

My mother’s comeback:

“Well, if you had a job, you could afford to finally buy a car by yourself. =/”

Now, usually a remark like this would sound like some kind of personal attack to me, being unemployed since forever. As consequence, usually it would make my mood take a nose dive, while I’d feel my depression gradually kicking in; when this happens, I just keep quiet point balnk and don’t say a thing anymore.

Not this time. >:)

This time I just took a couple seconds to hide a smirk, then I retorted with a passive-aggressive: “HAH! Try and tell this to M.! :)”

“Who’s M.?” was my mom’s question, and I told her that he is J.’s brother. J’s one of my friend from middle school, who even mother knows well enough to know also her family.

“M. had a job and was over the moon when he could finally buy a car by himself.” I kept telling my mother, always in a passive-aggressive, nonchalantly way. “But he regretted his purchase pretty soon nonetheless: not because of the price of the car, but because he found out that the purchase alone was only the tip of the iceberg, money-wise. He soon realised that he had to pay by himself every single thing: from a simple refuelling to car insurance, going through the oh-so-loved stamp-duty. All without counting the extra expenses for check ups and repairs. :)” I said.

“So yeah; he had a job, could get his precious car, but hated to the core the struggle of maintaining it nonetheless. :)“ I concluded, leaving for implied what I meant to say.

Getting a job might allow you to get a car. But you also gotta maintain it afterwards. And a job doesn’t always guarantee that you’ll have enough money to also take care of your car after you bought it.

I think she got the message loud and clear; for once, she has been the one to shut up.
