I want what Hollywood costume designers circa 1987 thought "punk" looked like and what prime time television costume designers circa 2007 thought "goth" looked like to fight each other to the death.

The third outfit of "Murder & the Maiden" (Season 3, Episode 2) is Phryne's disguise of a brown velvet jacket, black camisole and pants, along with an embroidered headwrap worn while trying to draw out the Russian Anarchists.
Borrowing Tatiana's embroidered headwrap and brown velvet coat to confuse the anarchists, the rest of Phryne's wardrobe is in similarly muted tones. The deep brown velvet caplet with mid-length sleeves and a wide collar (possibly allowing for a hood) is worn on top of her black camisole with a straight neckline and decorative scalloped edging. Her classic black wide leg silk faille pants add to the practicality and color of the outfit.
She accessorizes with fawn colored gloves embroidered with a black emblem of wheat, and a beautiful hand embroidered brown head wrap which features a variety of colors and types of floral embroidery, from large orange flowers to green grass to blue and red sprigs. The earth colors tie into her large leather bag and add to the somber tone of the scene. Phryne finishes off the outfit with dark strapped heels.

Costume Design Ask Game
I made an ask game for costume design fans! I should still have asks turned on--let me know if they're not working for some reason.
What's the latest movie you watched, and what did you think of the costumes in it?
What's your favorite type of costume movie: period movie with historical costumes, sci-fi/fantasy movie with costumes from imaginary cultures, or "style" movie with contemporary fashion of the time it was made?
What is your favorite era for historical costume?
What is your least favorite era for historical costume?
What is your favorite decade of the 20th century for costumes?
Do you prefer strict historical accuracy or free interpretations of historical costume?
Who is your favorite costume designer?
What movie or show has your favorite costumes for an imaginary culture?
What historical era or fictional culture is your favorite for men's costumes?
What's your favorite "style" movie or series (i.e. one where the characters wear contemporary fashion of the time it was made)?
Who's your favorite stylish character?
What movie or show won an award for costume design that you think is undeserved?
Would you sit through a movie or show that you otherwise disliked purely for the costumes?
If you could own any movie or TV costume piece (not necessarily to wear), which would it be?
What's a screen costume that you would wear IRL?
Name an actor and a costume you would like to see them wear.
If you could change the costumes for one movie or show, which one would it be and how would you change them?
What is your biggest costuming pet peeve?
What is your costuming guilty pleasure?
What's your favorite fashion show scene in a movie or series?
What's your favorite screen makeover or transformation scene?
Have you ever cosplayed? If so, which character(s)?
What's your favorite black and white costume movie?
Who's your favorite movie star style icon?
What costume or style movies and shows are on your to-watch list?

Chicago (2002, Rob Marshall)
08/01/2024
Chicago is a 2002 film directed by Rob Marshall.
Written by Bill Condon and based on the Broadway musical of the same name, the film stars Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere and John C. Reilly.
Acclaimed by critics and audiences, the film received several awards, including six 2003 Oscars (best film, best supporting actress for Catherine Zeta-Jones, best production design, best costumes, best editing and best sound), three Golden Globes and two BAFTA.
The show is inspired by the musical Chicago, originally staged on Broadway in 1975. The 1996 revival was more successful and continues to be performed in London's West End and on Broadway. The original production had divided the musical into vaudeville acts, which created some problems in the transition from stage show to film.
The film stars Renée Zellweger (Roxie Hart), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Velma Kelly), Richard Gere (Billy Flynn), John C. Reilly (Amos Hart), Queen Latifah (Matron "Mama" Morton), Lucy Liu (Go-To-Hell Kitty) e Christine Baranski (Mary Sunshine). Directed by Rob Marshall.
Richard Gere needed tap leesons before performing his dance number. Zellweger had never danced professionally but she had already sung in the 1994 film Shake, rattle and rock!.
Chita Rivera, who played Velma Kelly in the 1975 Broadway musical, appears in the film making a cameo appearance as "Nicky".

Thinking about the costuming on Felicity,, like how they intentionally have the characters rewear certain clothes through the seasons with occasional wardrobe updates. Like unlike other teen dramas at the time this was a really good choice considering they are all college students and do not have disposable income. Also how Felicity’s style changed as she became more confident in who she was as a person not letting others define her. I know everyone has opinions on her haircut but I LOOOOVED it I think it made a lot of sense for her character.

I only watch movies and TV shows so I can occasionally yell “goddamm it!” at costume designers and casting directors for doing such a good job.
