I like his new haircut. If I imagine it’s Carmy’s hair, my mind goes straight to Syd cutting it.
I get this crazy idea about how they´re “just friends” but she’s the kind of friend who would cut your hair. You know? And so, Carmy probably hates to go to the barber shop because it reminds him of Michael. You´ll see, they used to go together.
I imagine that when they grew apart, Carmy started cutting his own hair in the bathroom. It´s not like he had the time to go get a haircut, anyway. He had a good pulse, trained in the kitchen with stainless steel knives that did as he pleased. He figured he could handle a pair of scissors and do a decent enough job. Sure! Why not? He wasn´t wrong, although his self-service hair cut days were few and far between since he got back to Chicago. He was just too burned out. Too far gone.
It seems to me that the last time he cut his own hair was right before The Bear´s opening, not the friends and family fiasco, the real thing. It was quick, not too short; he wanted to comb it Dandy-style and put gel in it, just like he did in New York. He wanted to emulate his old self. He wanted to get the call and make sure his unruly curls weren´t going to react in the process. He even thought about that that day, in front of the bathroom mirror cabinet. The call, the haircut he was gonna sport that day, the everything. I´m sure he wanted it all to be perfect, and that included his hair. That was not negotiable for someone like Carmen. I dare to think his mind was set on not letting her down again, regardless of how this turned out.
So I keep wallowing in my machinations about his hair and his haircuts, and of course, Syd keeps popping up in my head. I´m positive that she walked in on Carmy trimming his own curls in the restaurant's bathroom, very early in the morning, when they were still the only ones there. This was after Carmy pulled an all-nighter cookout, he was the only one invited to, trying new ingredients, naturally. When she saw the dark circles under his eyes and his determination to correctly style that hair swirl on the back of his head he was clearly fixating on, Sydney offered to help him. He refused. She insisted. Syd won.
She told him she used to cut her dad´s hair growing up when it was raining, and he didn´t let her go outside to play. Syd walked him through her childhood stories as her expert hands ruled his cowlick. She elaborated on how Emmanuel offered himself as a customer of her Salon, and so she cut his hair, gave him mani-pedis, put colorful hairclips on him, all sorts of stickers, and even glitter sometimes. Carmy succumbed to her storytelling, and before he knew it, his hair was a done deal. Perfect. But he surely couldn´t care less about his hair by the time Syd was done with him. He was hung upon her hands in his hair. Her touch. Her.
This must have happened at least a dozen times after that first random hand she gave him.
They were friends. After all, what´s so wrong about a friend cutting another´s friend's hair, right? Innocent. Nothing to it. It was just hair.
Oh, but it wasn´t.
I figure it probably was such an intimate moment they shared now and then. They both enjoyed it, anticipated it, loved it.
I bet Syd couldn´t get enough of how right it felt for her to softly run her slender fingers through the sides of his head when she was done, and tug it carefully to make sure it was even.
In my musings, Carmy surely closed his eyes to her touch and let her do. He relaxed. He let go. For just a few moments, he just let go. He was putty in her hands. He tried to hide how deep his breathing got; sometimes he couldn´t, and she could tell. I´m categorically certain Syd noticed.
And then he was back. She put the scissors away. It was all over.
They went back to normal.
And waited for his hair to grow back.
And repeat.

I wonder if the statues placements are loosely based on the Quiet Council's structure which was in turn based on seasons. In this case, Magneto = Autumn, Storm = Spring, Charles= Summer, Emma = Winter?
that's def a possibility an somethin i thought of !!!

I want you to remember:
The fascists hate you too and they just will pretend otherwise until after they've killed the rest of us, before they turn on you.
Edit! It's been blazed by now. Thank you, though!

it's so wild to me that you absolutely cannot force a hyperfixation to happen. like you'll watch the most perfectly tailor-made-for-you content that everyone says you'll love and feel absolutely nothing, and then the thing you watch on a whim to fill time will reach through the screen and put its damn fingers in your brain and start rearranging the neurons right in front of you and every single time you're like THIS??? THIS??????? and this happens like every 6-12 months forever

EDIT: I do not interpret "just managing" as "just suffering, just enduring, curling into a fetal position and waiting for it to be over." Managing is an active process.
So I'm using this post as a platform to make the reminder that "the power of the people is greater than the people in power," and we all are cordially invited to:
Take good care of ourselves. Mental, physical, emotional health. Hydrate. Move if we can, get outside if we can.
Keep up a routine. Remember quarantine and we all had to find a routine? This is the same.
Be intentional in our news consumption. Let's not stick our heads in the sand but let's not doomscroll either. Get an RSS aggregator. Subscribe to WTF Just Happened Today, Yoour Local Epidemiologist, Fix The News (for some inspiring hopeful news!). We'll check our feeds a few times a week, but no more than once a day.
Connect with friends and loved ones. Remind ourselves that while SOME people are horrible, for the most part people are awesome... if complicated. Share our fears but also our hopes. Eat together.
Now that we're keeping healthy, safe, sane, and hopeful... now we also fight. Quietly if we prefer, loudly if we prefer. But sustainably. I hate that I had to live through three rounds of this nonsense where a few people use half of us as tools to fuck over ALL of us, but here we are again. So let us take just one moment every week or so to...
Use 5calls to keep blowing up our reps phones. Tell them to either break ranks with the Orange Administration, or to stand up louder than just matching outfits and signs. Or to THANK them for standing up.
Use Vote411 to find elections before the midterms. A lot of villages, cities, townships etc have local elections that will affect where we live... and more importantly, the people in office there will affect things upwards too.
Use Ballotpedia to know exactly what's on our ballots ahead of time.
Protest, because it actually works.
Use Vote.org to make a plan to vote in the midterms. Make a plan that is immune to voter suppression tactics. Get our documents in order. Reach out to our friends to go to the polls as a group. Plan to livestream our visit, up until the point we have to turn our cameras off.
Make and share memes that promote hope, organizing, solidarity, and/or resistance.
Get involved with an action network like Indivisible, MoveOn, or Working Families Party.
Go to a local town hall meeting. Speak up.
Heck, start our own local activism networks, letter campaigns, call campaigns, or fundraisers with Action Network.
And we will remember our self-care. We will remind ourselves and each other that they want us scattered, focus is how we resist.
It IS coming back. Things ARE going to get worse. The world has become a place where a very few people are pulling levers and pushing buttons that are actively destroying much of what is good about living in a society where people care for each other.
Many others are in shock, sputtering "but can they do that?" MANY many others are waiting for someone to come save us.
But there are those who are actively, loudly, opposing.
And there are more people speaking up, acting up, every day. More people saying it's time to get scrappy. It's time to get into some good trouble. The shock is wearing off.
Yes, it's gonna get worse before it gets better (the long-term damage of the acts of the past momentum of all the damage that has been done will take that long to be felt -- but it WILL get better.
If WE will it.

“kids spend too much time on their devices” well what else are they supposed to do? there’s no corner shops with pinball machines in them on every corner anymore. there’s no malls or stores in small towns for teens to hang out in without being suspected of shoplifting or kicked out for loitering. sidewalks are too broken for them to ride their bikes and there’s no bike lane in the street to make it safe for them. i just don’t understand where they expect these kids to go when they keep taking places away from them. and yes having no safe public places for them is what leads a lot of teens into addiction if they end up at a place where people aren’t truly looking out for them.

i’m gonna cry it’s raining right now and i just passed by a family where both parents were without an umbrella but their kid who couldn’t have been older than like 3-4 was proudly holding this GIANT umbrella whose diameter was as tall (if not taller) as the kid. both the parents were getting absolutely drenched but u could tell the kid was just so happy to have an “adult” task and carry the umbrella themselves and i think that sacrifice is what love is all about

My fellow bitches under 5'5. Whatever the money, do not take a job working at a middle school. A fellow adult tried to put me in detention last month and would NOT give up until I showed her my badge proving Yes, The School Hired Me To Work Here. It's not meant for people our height.
