Can we get (if you want) a cranky and DK father-son relationship?

Slowly working on my motivation to work on more Mario stuff, allow me to present the one of two individuals in my au with a legitimately good father:🪄

I loved Cranky Kong in the movie, but also in the games. I was a big fan of him in Donkey Kong Country Returns, where he sits and grumbles at you from his rocking chair while waving his cane around lol. I loved how the movie made him a successful and well loved ruler, you can tell he hogs the single braincell that hops around the Mario universe. His relationship with DK is also rather interesting; I wish we'd seen more of the dynamic. To me, it seemed like DK was struggling with finding his place in the world and who he wanted to be, and Cranky had his own ideas about how he wanted DK to act and behave. He let his son do his own thing, but wasn't shy about voicing his opinion. By the end of the movie, Cranky seemed to realize that even though his son is a goofball, he's still capable of accomplishing what's needed. Thus, Cranky decides to back off and just let his son be himself. With his dad's approval and blessing, I can see DK gaining more genuine confidence instead of relying on the artificial cockiness he puts out.

It is 3:35 in the morning, and I just got done watching the Mario Brothers movie, and it was fan-freaking-tastic!

I'll definitely be talking about it more later.

The full Donkey Kong Country cast! Except the ones I couldn't be bothered to draw! Let's get on with them. (DK and Candy were in the second batch)

Diddy and Dixie remain mainly the same, though Diddy I based off his movie design solely because I couldn't get the crop top to look right. Still a couple as indicated by their matching nail polish.

Cranky has a vest and sweatpants under the red shawl he has in the movie, while Wrinkly I gave a similar setup but in green and with a sundress. She's still dead in my 'verse, but her ghost appears in this design instead of a nightgown.

Chunky and Kiddy! Since in my 'verse everyone's a little older Kiddy goes from a toddler to a kindergarten/first-grade aged kid, who is still just huge for no reason. Chunky is his big brother around Diddy's age and since the movie portrayed Chunky as having some peach fuzz I gave him a bit of scruff on his chin. He ended up pretty cute I must say!

I'VE ALWAYS HATED TINY KONG'S HAT. IT'S SO UGLY. So I fully removed it from my design lol. I kept the same general idea of her teen design but aged it down just a smidge so you can easily tell Dixie's the older one of the 2, while also making her blonde hair dyed for some extra variety. instead of a crop tank top and sweatpants she has an off-the-shoulders top and a skort for some extra variation.

As for Lanky Kong I leaned into his namesake, and if he looks just a SMIDGE evil that's because I had TheMentok's video on the Kongs in the background as I drew and that might've influenced me just a tad lol.

Funky my beloved! I went full into his original full-surfer design, to get something different since Funky canonically hates going adventuring. I gave him a belly gained from just chilling on the beach most days lol. Also he has hair now! With him I set out to not just make him a clone of DK that wears clothes.

Lastly, King K. Rool and Lord Fredrik! With K.Rool I mixed his regular design with his Super Mario Sluggers design and also gave him a LOOOOOONG tail because crocodile. He wears a cuirass over his chest and gut. As for Fredrik all I did was give him some boots his design was strong enough already.

Now for extra 'verse lore: K.Rool rules Kremling Island, Fredrik rules the nearby Snowmad Island. these two alongside the Kong Isles form the Jungle Archipelago Kingdom. All three nations have beef with each other but since the recent Peace Treaty between the Mushroom and Koopa Kingdoms they've moved to a "cold war" sort of status where no one is openly hostile to one another but they still hate each other lol.

Just came from theaters. Thoughts (spoiler heavy) under the "Keep Reading."

I pretty much expected the narrative to be the safest, straightest Point A-to-Point B plot. Being a ninety minute film (which my bladder thanks, because I can't watch movies past the two hour mark in theaters without rushing to the restroom nowadays), it never stays in one place or dilemma for long; this film is snappy. Everybody takes things at face value amazingly quick and advance the plot with little struggle. It's kind of odd, because normally this would bother me WAY more since the emotional impact of the protagonist's personal arc should have that gravitate (this film needed maybe like, an extra ten minutes), but I think having a paper thin plot that runs entirely in speedrun mode probably saved it more than killed. It is right to the point, says what it needs to, establishes and answers, and then moves on. I think having a laser focus goal (Mario and Luigi ends up in the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach needs to save it from Bowser, they go kick his ass) means all the little scenes that we do are crucial to the overall movie instead of pointless meandering. The action-y part of the film get to linger the most, which are spectacular to see, though I would have sacrificed a few minutes of it for some introspection. I guess I shouldn't have expected much from an Illumination film, let alone Nintendo's default flagship. When you have a brand as big as Mario (he's pretty much gaming's Mickey Mouse, after all), it makes sense this movie is just... the most Okay Thing Ever. At the very least, it does mean the movie didn't get gross out humors or Mario spouting dated catchphrases, though the pop songs playing in the background DO stick out by contrast, even if it's another thing I'd expect from a mainstream western animated movie.

Probably the biggest jaw drop is not the isekai route (I'm 36, I grew up with American Nintendo lore where Mario and Luigi were originally from Brooklyn and I'm still grateful the movie paid tribute to it because damn it, I find that aspect of Mario Lore interesting, non-canonical my ass!) , but that they have... parents. Nay, a FAMILY. Mario and Luigi have always BEEN Mario and Luigi. We see their parents from the knee down and cloaked in shadows in Yoshi's Island, but that was literally a couple of screens post-credit; we never see their faces or catch their names or anything. Even the 1993 Mario movie only had Mario and Luigi - their parents were non-essentials. Imagine my shock to see they have A Mom and Dad. What the fuck? And not just parents, they have a whole extended family living under one roof (like any true Italians, of course.) I wanna know who these other folks are. Uncles? Cousins? There's a baby there. Mario and Luigi's cousin? Is the old guy their grandpa??? Help, I don't know what to do with this information. How do I take in Mario and Luigi having an actual family?

Pauline has a brief speaking role and it looks like she's in an important position. I'm guessing she's NYC's mayor. Does she know Mario in this continuity?

I see you there, Charles Martinet, voicing a character who looks like Mario, but it isn't Mario. ;D

Speaking of family, holy SHIT, this movie also clarified whether Donkey Kong was Cranky's son or grandson. It's the first! Granted, this might be true for THIS film only, but it's nice to hear someone lay out their relationship out loud!

It is absolutely to no one's surprise that the stand-out role is Jack Black's Bowser. Every scene he's in, he nails. He delivers with so much gusto and enthusiasm - this man clearly loved playing this guy. Dude gets a piano solo in the middle of the film (a love song to his beloved Peach, of course) because Christ, man, if you're gonna use Jack Black, then you gotta use every part of that buffalo!

I've already accepted that Peach is just the oddball humanoid out in the Marioverse long before canon established Mario and Luigi as Mushroom Kingdom originators, too. But the movie does something interesting and goes out of their way to explain why she's the only human in a sea of Toads. I imagine this could be potential material for the sequel. Like Mario, it's also hinted she, too is from Earth, before accidentally wandering into the Mushroom Kingdom as a baby. I have so many questions how this kid walked into a pipe located in a very obscure part of the NYC sewers (maybe her parents were very neglectful plumbers) and even more questions on her upbringing So, the Toads decided to just one take her in, raise her, train her, and then... crown her as their princess? This brings up the question on whether the Mushroom Kingdom started as a monarchy because of her or if they were filling in a vacant seat that they felt only she was worthy. It's such a weird, eccentric thing for the Toads to just DO, especially without a feasible explanation, but also, I feel like this is something these mushroom idiots would kind of do. I mean, have you seen them? They're hopeless.

I would have been fine if Mario learned all his acrobatic parkour skills in the training montage alone, but I actually love that he's always been acrobatic just from dodging Brooklyn's many, many, maaaaany obstacles. Is it silly? Yeah, it is, but ya know what, people do parkour in real life every day, so why not?

Mario and Luigi taking off their gloves to reveal their... hands, is weirdly off-putting to me. Like these are just CGi cartoon hands, but they have like nails and creases and stuff. And it sticks out so badly that all I wanted was for them to put the gloves back ON. Which is funny to me because official Mario renders do this all the time. Like look at a recent 3D model of Mario and see the visible strewn of hairs sticking out from his hat. I don't know why the hands don't work for me. Maybe I'm just so used to them wearing gloves 24/7. Kind of like Mario's nipples.

I suspected Luigi wasn't going to do much from the trailers I've seen, and that proved correct in the final film. He does get to use the super star with Mario to beat Bowser, but I feel it went a bit unearned. Look, if there's a choice between Peach getting kidnapped or Luigi, than I'd rather it be the latter. Peach here is leagues better than what she's originally stuck with, and it really was for the better. I just kind of wished Luigi had maybe a moment prior to the final fight where he, I don't know, gain some courage, and try to free himself and all the other prisoners. I mean, the film already squeezed in Donkey Kong's daddy issues for all the five minutes it had, I don't see why they couldn't do the same for Luigi. I feel then his team-up with Mario (which isn't thoroughly unjustified - they are the Mario Bros) would have felt like a gradual step forward with his character. Ahh well, maybe in the sequel. Which probably will happen. It'll be good news for Yoshi fans if it does, if the post-credit tease is anything to go by.

tl;dr: This is a very safe movie, though I expected it as much. It's like, there are all-age films designed for their target audience, but thoroughly enjoyable for older folks, too. And then there are kid's movie which are... just for kids. This movie is the latter. It's either that or designed for longtime/dedicated Mario fans, which I am also the latter.

I'm not entirely sure if I would consider it a fun movie, but it's not bad. Shallow, but not bad. I have no genuine grievance or high praises for it. But I enjoyed my time regardless and didn't feel like it was a waste. And hey, that's fine with me.

I will absolutely be getting this on bluray, are you kidding me? (Funny little ancedote: A kid sitting next to me in theaters was thoroughly disappointed with the movie. Like straight up groaning, because Bowser did not win. It put a smile on my face. You're gonna conquer the world, kid!)

...in a verse where the Krankster is truly DKs grandfather like we're used to meaning his dad and mom are NOT in the actual picture...and Kranky just lies to make things less weird.

One fear... Thanks to Arlo the alligator boy movie... What if DKs mom is just regular gorilla Kong and his dad is non other than K. Rool? Who is stealing the bananas to not draw out DK but find his beloved ?

// 1. This AU/Theory is following the idea that Cranky and Wrinkly are actually DK's grandparents (whether following the games wiki so far, or the idea of the movie Cranky raising DK from a young age so DK just calls him dad, but he's still his grandfather.)

2. This wouldn't involve a supposed 'dk junior' as in dk the third's DAD, but his mother (who could also have the name dk jr tho, js.)

3. My idea is that this DK Jr goes missing because she/they (haven't decided pronouns) joins a pirate crew (K. Rool's).

4. Something happens...DK is born and left with Cranky, and DK's parents are never heard of or spoken about again with Cranky taking on DK's father role.

(PS I can't draw, but here's a concept art of a potential DK mother...though I'd prob make her arms bigger if I could. We need massive mommy to step on us.) Also pink skin vs DK's tan skin parts. But both are brown.

One more tid bit of this brain bleach au where K. Rool is potentially DK's father (DK...I...am your fatHER) - ...would be a small detail of perhaps either the mother or K. Rool uses part of the red cape to create DK's tie.

Bonus possible scene with young DK getting the tie from Krool. :U before he realized he fuckin' sucks and is being evil so he don't want none of that.

Anyone up for some monkey business?

So what’s the story for this one? (Assuming you haven’t played one of the most beloved games on the SNES). Well Donkey Kong and his other Kong friends are all chilling on DK Island when suddenly the big ape’s bananas are all stolen by humanoid crocodiles called the Kremlings, ruled by the batshit crazy but fucking tenacious King K Rool. Why did he steal the bananas instead of, I dunno, try to kill the Kongs in their sleep or something? He’s an asshole that’s why and so now he needs to receive a brutal beating by getting stomped on the head a bunch of times

So DKC is a fairly standard platformer, taking most of the basics set by Mario, complete with having a run button: unique to these games is the ability to roll, which you can use to knock enemies away. You speed up with each consecutive enemy you defeat by rolling so be careful for bottomless pits and other obstacles. If you roll off the edge of a platform you can then perform a longer jump. It’s not really needed in this game save for some extra stuff but by the next one you’ll have to drill it into your playstyle

You can pick up barrels and throw them at enemies of course

You can switch between the two characters, Donkey and Diddy Kong, at any time, the character you’re not using will follow you but will be like a ghost of sorts: he won’t take damage but also won’t hit enemies

Tip #1 for this game: always use Diddy, never Donkey. Not because the latter is bad but because the former is just superior: he’s faster, has a higher jump, a smaller hitbox, a faster roll and can throw barrels faster. Moreover he carries barrels in front of himself rather than over his head like Donkey does, this is important because if that barrel collides with an enemy as you’re carrying it the enemy will take damage, making Diddy’s way of carrying barrels basically a shield ability

Diddy’s only downside is that there are like 3 enemies he can’t defeat by jumping on them, so in those rare cases Donkey’s better…but that’s it

And spoilers but it won’t get better for the “thrilla gorilla”, ‘cause he’s not even playable in the next two games and he spends his time getting kidnapped. Jeez I thought X got shafted pretty hard in his own series, my man DK had to wait ‘till DK Returns in 2010 to finally shine (even though at the expense of the other characters…)

As for the other Kongs you meet in the overworld:

Cranky is a crotchety old bastard, usually telling you that you suck when compared to him and whining about how much better games used to be in his days. On occasion he might give you some tips on how to find some secrets but they’re usually very cryptic

Funky is a cool dude, letting you borrow his bodacious flying vehicle to warp to any area of the island that you want. An’ that’s just wicked man! Very mondo!

Finally there’s (Eye)Candy Kong, who saves your game

I’ll be completing this game 101% but I’ll cover the details of what this entails next time, for now just enjoy the incredible music and amazing spritework. yeah ok maybe some character sprites haven’t aged the best due to the whole wanting to look 3D even though they’re really 2D thing, but the actual backgrounds look stunning and are rich with details

Luigi “I overheard guys talking about the rings and will”

(Luigi reaches into his pocket Mario does the same and pulls out a golden chain and two wedding rings cranky and donkey Kong gasp”

donkey Kong “are those?”

Cranky Kong “but how …how did you guys?”

Luigi “then the Kong army was brought to the dungeon some shiny land in my cage and I saw it was a ring”

Mario “ and I found this one after peach gave bowser the blue mushroom and the inshliels wc maybe this are the rings “

(Mario and Luigi hand the rings to cranky and looks at them finding the words to my beloved on them )

(Donkey Kong looks as well)

donkey Kong “dad do you think there?”

cranky Kong “yes yes they are”

(Cranky than hugs Mario and Luigi surpriseing them both)

cranky Kong “thank you”

(He lets them go)

Mario “(tips his hat) hey no problem “

Luigi “your welcome “

Donkey Kong “aww group hug!”

Mario “that’s ok that was thanks enough “

donkey Kong “aww bring it in”

(Donkey Kong gathers them all in a group hug as cranky playfully rolls his eyes and Mario and Luigi laughs)

"Why do you like me as a friend?"

Donkey looked up from the stack of books he'd placed down. Inari sat on a table across the room. A perfectly good chair stood askew to her position, ignored in favor of being able to swing her legs back and forth. Her elbows rested on her knees with her hands cupping her face. One—or at least Donkey—would think based on her words that she was upset, but she seemed rather content. At least, that's how it appeared outwardly.

"What do you mean?" he finally asked.

"You could have literally anybody else in the village or even in the rest of the kingdom as your friend—you're the prince for stars' sake!" she blurted with absolutely 0 restraint, throwing her arms out.

"Yeah, and…? You're not my only friend, Ina. There's also Karate and—"

"I know, I know, it's just… out of all of them… you hang out with me the most…" She tapped the tips of her fingers together, pondering her next words. "Aren't you… afraid of what people will say?"

Donkey took a step towards her, teeth bared. "Why are you asking such things? Whose putting these thoughts into your head?"

Inari scrambled off the table, rushing over to him. His words made her panic, and she realized he might have mistook her meaning to be something else. Book-smart the prince certainly was, but people-smart he most certainly was not.

"No one, I promise! Well, I guess I'm doing it to myself." She sighed, turning away from him. "What I mean is… aren't you worried people might take our relationship differently from how we do?"

Inari had already experienced a couple of their other friends asking her about it. It had been as a joke, more or less to tease her for how close the two of them were, but it made her worried now that everyone else perceived it the same way.

"Ina, you're a very good friend of mine, and a very talkative one at that. I've always found that interesting about you," Donkey said, placing his hands on her shoulders. "However, while usually I can tell what you're trying to say while using twice as many words as needed… I genuinely can't at the moment. Please explain?"

"They might think… we're dating…?" His eyes widened, and Inari thought there was the faintest hint of his face flushing at the mere thought, but she ignored it for his sake. "I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea, least of all you, so I'm just mostly afraid, is all."

The two shared a silent look for a few moments. Donkey broke out into a mischievous grin.

"Next time someone suggests it, you should say we are actually dating."

Now it was Inari who turned red in the face, though her change was much more evident than his.

"Th-that is a bad idea!" she stammered.

"Is it? We're not considered too young for it to be taken seriously. Besides, if anyone asks why—which I'm hoping they don't—just tell them it's for the same reasons we've gotten along so well as friends. Although I guess that was your original question, huh?" She nodded. "Well, there's the fact you're really smart, you're always willing to help everyone you can, you're actually… kinda… cute… uhm, we enjoy a lot of the same books, there's never a dull moment with you if I'm being completely honest—"

"Wait, what was that third one?"

"We enjoy a lot of the same books," Donkey said nonchalantly. "Look, there's a lot of reasons to it. In the end, I actually feel like I can just be… I don't know, normal around you, instead of what I am. Some people have tried to be my friend only because I'm the prince, but it sometimes feels like you forget that when we're near each other."

"That's because I don't see," Inari pretended to swoon, acting as if she was head over heels for him, "Donkey Kong, beloved prince of the Jungle Kingdom and heir to the throne!" She grinned wide, dropping the rouse and grabbing his arm in excitement. "I see a really smart person who I am good friends with and have a great time arguing about things with. If that makes you feel like you're one of us 'little folk', then I feel like I've already accomplished something with my life. Although, ideally, we'll be old coots and I'll be talking to you like it's bingo night and we're arch rivals who have lived in the same retirement center together for decades."

They laughed at the thought.

The mid 90's was the height of music, but for The Chimps it was their lowest point. After an awful Banarijuana withdraw meltdown between Diddy and Dixie, it caused a breakup. The group of drum banging, heavy hitting monkeys went on a five year hiatus, enjoying life as it is. Some others however decided to go solo. Chunky's rap album hit the shelves, Cranky's piano pieces played at fancy restaurants, but even today in grandma's grocery store or a rushed broken game you may hear the grand hit wonder from Lanky Kong's only solo country album titled "My Truck, My Wife And A Bunch Of Bananas" with a hit that made the album sold millions worldwide. Take Me Home, Donkey Kong Country Roads was a masterful piece that not only moved 80-Hour A Week Truck Drivers, but Lanky Kong himself. A song that was less about wanting to go home, but with his friends back in the break up. While Lanky was a third banana playing acoustic guitar for the band, being only used for only two songs of their five albums, was very beloved by the band. Some interviews from Chunky said that he was "truly the peanut butter that stuck this peanut butter banana sandwich. A messy one, but a good enough one!" Featuring this song is a lone banjo bear man that Lanky knew very well during a game gig during the band's down time. Check out The Chimps' 30th anniversary compilation greatest hits album coming this April! Featuring Smooth Crocodile, Chimplovania, Wonder Kong, and not this song because it's not by The Chimps, it's LANKY KONG, STOP CONTACTING ME. THAT'S THE REASON WHY IT'S NOT AT

title: i get to love you (kaisoo) word count: 345 date posted: 01/13/2020 summary: Jongin smiles, wide and stupid and very much whipped for this man.

commentary: my first kaisoo day fic! grabe, nawala sa isip ko na 2020 ko isinulat ‘to lmao. sobrang tagal na pala??? anyway, this was one of my rare english drabbles na isinulat ko under 30 minutes. (writing in english isn’t really my ~thing—mas expressive akong magsulat pag taglish lmao kaya bihira ‘to). i’m really fond of writing kaisoo in domestic situations like this, dala na rin ng pangungulila kay kyungsoo (lol). actually, i’m not even sure if this was an au or a canon fic. gusto ko tuloy ng tinapay haha!

The next thing Chanyeol knew, Baekhyun fisted his hand on his shirt and tugged him down for a kiss. It was firm and waaay too fast, just a smack of lips, and then he patted Chanyeol’s chest before stepping back a little.

ito ang pinakapaborito kong fic this year. as in. the moment i saw this prompt, ang sabi ko sa sarili ko, "mare dapat makuha mo 'yan OR ELSE!!!" i have a ~thing for film AUs, kaya nang makita kong may nagsumbit nito-NA RICHARD LINKLATER FILM PA OMG-hindi na tumigil ang utak ko sa pag-iisip. i love everything about this fic so much. mula sa back stories ng chanbaek, hanggang sa batuhan nila ng linya... i'd like to think i did a great job in writing this. sinigurado kong maganda at natural lang ang dialogues nila rito dahil isa 'yon sa essence ng Before Trilogy, eh. gusto ko rin sanang gawing buong araw silang magkasama kaso i thought mas may emotional impact kung bitin ang oras nila.

may ilang parts pa akong dinelete rito kasi feeling ko ang haba na niya. (don't worry i'll share it soon!) kahit light angst lang 'to, may certain weight kang mararamdaman after reading it? ewan, ganyan ang pakiramdam ko pag binabasa ko 'to. tsaka grabe pinag-isipan kong mabuti kung may smut ba 'to o kahit kiss lang. i almost added a kiss here kaso upon re-reading the fic...it kinda didn't feel right? i thought them sharing a kiss would shatter the illusion, na baka hindi na sila maka-move on sa isa't isa at hindi na nila ma-achieve ang dapat nilang i-achieve. ako lang siguro 'to hahaha pero one thing's for sure: THIS IS A HAPPILY EVER AFTER!!! sila hanggang dulo haha! i just wish more people could read this fic huhu.

commentary: magkasabay kong isinulat ang atin ang gabi at 'pag nandiyan kaya lurks na lurks ako kung alin ba dapat ang uunahin. 15k worth of pure fluff, landian, at katangahan isumbong niyo nga 'yan sa HR!!! not gonna lie, sobrang nag-enjoy ako sa pagbuo ng kaisoo barista 'verse na 'to. may naka-outline na ngang side story ang chanbaek dito eh...hahaha! si sehun ang favorite character ko sa fic na 'to kasi siya talaga ang representation ng frustration ng readers haha! gigil na gigil si kuya eh, ang cute!

'yun lang, a part of me wished na mas inayos ko ang execution ng ilang scenes sa fic na 'to? lalo na sa parts nina junmyeon at joohyun. i would rewrite it if i could. overall, this is a cute, fluffy fic written in a slightly weird 4+1 fic haha!

commentary: my biggest and most personal (lol) fic yet. 35k ang target word count ko for this one kaso i had to delete a huge chunk last september kasi...nag-iba ang takbo ng utak ko. bigla na lang akong naumay magsulat ng romance at fluff? tsaka wala pa akong nababasang writer-editor au fic na nakaka-relate ako kaya isinulat ko na. sa totoo lang, ginawa kong therapy ang fic na 'to habang tinatapos ko ang isang manuscript ko (na surprise!!! hindi ko pa rin tapos until now!!!). it's weird for me na magsulat ng isang bagay na hindi umiikot sa romance, pero later on, na-enjoy ko rin. okay din pala magsulat ng character-centric fics na side lang ang romance.

commentary:  ito ang tanging non-fic fest entry fic ko na himalang maraming nagbasa. hanggang ngayon shookt pa rin ako na umabot sa 700+ hits ito sa ao3 haha kklk?? anyway, skl ang inspo ng fic na 'to. gaya ni ksoo sa fic, noong start ng quarantine ko lang nadiscover ang Nino's Home Youtube channel. at gaya rin niya, na-weirduhan ako sa antics ni Nino...at sige na nga, aliw na aliw ako sa subtitles niyang nangungupal lmao. ewan ko na, nagulat na lang ako sa sarili ko na may outline na ako for a kaisoo fic?? it took me two days of outlining and actual writing bago ko natapos 'to. at tawang-tawa ako kasi sobrang crack fic dapat nito! the nininail was a last addition kasi may nag-RT sa TL ko ng video compilation ni jongin talking about his cute nail..eh ang cute nga kaya dinagdag ko na. wala akong intensyon na gawing cliffhanger ang ending...it just sort of happened? feeling ko nga standalone fic 'to kaso habang binabasa ko siya, nabitin na rin ako lmao. hanggang not!fic na lang ang kinaya ko for the continuation kasi dami ko nang sinusulat ngayon lol. but with or without the not!fic, okay siyang kwento for me. nakakatawa, nakakilig hay :)

Nasanay na si Kyungsoo na makaramdam ng kaunting lungkot after ng conference calls nila. As much as he loved having his alone time, nakaka-miss din pala ang makasalamuha ng ibang tao. Sa short supermarket trips at lobby guards na nga lang siya nakakaranas ng actual human interaction this quarantine period. He didn’t realize how much he used to count on minor interactions, like ‘yung pangungulit sa kanya ni Jongdae sa cubicle niya araw-araw, or ‘yung quick lunch meetings niya with Baekhyun kapag napapadpad ng Makati ang best friend. Kahit nga face to face meetings with their boss na usually kinakatakutan niya, hinahanap-hanap na niya ngayon.

Rare, the UK gaming studio, was formed in 1985 and has brought countless amazing video games to the world. Battletoads, R.C Pro-Am, and Donkey Kong Country were some of the studios earlier hits, but Rare truly began to shine brightest during its time developing games exclusively for Nintendo 64. GoldenEye, Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, and Donkey Kong 64 were some of the finest games of their time on the 64-bit Nintendo home console.

Everything was smooth sailing for Rare and Nintendo, until frustration set in regarding funding of projects going into the launch of Nintendo GameCube. Rare Co-Founder Tim Stamper said during an interview when asked why Nintendo never acquired the company that he had "no idea why they didn't do that. I thought we were a good fit." Microsoft scooped up Rare for $375 million in 2002. At the time, Nintendo was till struggling with the GameCube's launch. Rare Misses Donkey Kong

Rare's Community Manager goes by Daley Kong on Twitter and posts frequently about DK like a forlorn lover. It goes beyond just one person at Rare. The company clearly misses working on Donkey Kong games. It is hard to blame them. It takes a while to get over breakups and clearly Rare can't quit DK. The Donkey Kong Country series and Donkey Kong 64 are some of the more memorable games to feature one of Nintendo's oldest and most beloved characters. 

Donkey Kong Has Already Been on a Pirate Adventure

Kaptain K. Rool and his gang of pirates would have been cooler enemies than some skeletons.

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest is probably the best game in the DKC series and one of the finest bits of evidence in my case that Sea of Thieves could have been a Donkey Kong game. The game features Diddy Kong sailing on a voyage to save his best friend Donkey Kong with the help of his girlfriend Dixie Kong. It was odd that they made a game where you didn't actually control Donkey Kong, but the game featured tons of pirate stuff. The main boss was Kaptain K. Rool and the game featured tons of pirate-themed levels like Gangplank Galley, Mainbrace Mayhem and Pirate Panic.

They aren't fooling anyone.

It is almost as if Rare is leaving behind clues about this mystery. The palm trees in Sea of Thieves are essentially modern day DK palm trees. Just how deep does this rabbit hole go?

Please take a look at these barrels. They are practically identical. Barrels and Donkey Kong go together almost as well as bananas and Donkey Kong. Sea of Thieves could probably try to hide their undying love for DK just a little bit. Add this to the pile of evidence.

Let's Talk About Bananas

DK's banana hoarding is well documented.

Donkey Kong loves his bananas, but I found it especially interesting that the Sea of Thieves developers chose DK's favorite fruit as the only way for players to heal in Sea of Thieves. It is just another example of their years of developing Donkey Kong games influencing the development of Sea of Thieves. They could have chosen another tropical fruit, but they picked bananas. Hardly a coincidence.

Coincidence? We think not.

DK Already Had a Crew and They Rocked!

This might be a stretch considering almost every Rare game has had amazing music, but Donkey Kong 64's DK Rap seems to have influenced Sea of Thieves. The ability to play music with your pirate crew may remind some gamers of the days when the DK crew was jamming on Nintendo 64. The ability to jam out with a group of Donkey Kong characters on a pirate ship would certainly trump the amazing experience that Sea of Thieves offers today. It goes beyond music for the DK crew, as they would have been materially more entertaining player avatars than the current offerings by Rare.

A Donkey Kong FPS Game Would Rool

DK has quite a bit of experience with guns and cannons.

Donkey Kong and his pal Diddy are not afraid to pack heat. Diddy Kong is still shooting up enemies in Smash 4, but it would be really cool to see a first-person Donkey Kong game. Sea of Thieves could have been this game. Rare has made some of the most iconic shooters from the console era and it would have been amazing to see their next FPS masterpiece be set in the Donkey Kong universe.

Donkey Kong Has Been Shooting Himself out of Cannons for Years

Donkey Kong has been shooting himself out of barrel cannons for over twenty years. It is basically in his blood at this point. One of our favorite things to do in Sea of Thieves at Shacknews is firing ourselves out of cannons. It is super fun and certainly inspired by DK. The evidence is really starting to pile up in favor of my theory that Sea of Thieves could have been a Donkey Kong game.

It's Nintendo's Fault That Sea of Thieves isn't on Switch

That's right, Nintendo. Please understand.

It is apparent that Rare would have no fear in setting sail on the Sea of Thieves with the DK crew if things had gone differently with Nintendo back in the early 2000s. We may never know what the Big N's reasoning was to let Rare go, but the upcoming launch of Sea of Thieves offers a lesson for the company. Rare has been out of favor for quite some time, but many of the best parts of their history as a developer were during their time with Nintendo. It is truly a Shaq and Kobe situation. Sea of Thieves will still be an excellent game and a fine Xbox One exclusive, but Nintendo might have truly lost a magical opportunity for a great Nintendo Switch exclusive. Donkey Kong's Sea of Thieves may just be another one of my tinfoil hat theories, but it would have been an awesome game.

Get it? Cranky! *slaps knee*

I hope this doesn't leave anyone thinking I am cranky about Sea of Thieves. We love the game at Shacknews and have even declared that if you don't like Sea of Thieves, you don't like video games. It is just sad to think of the opportunity missed. We could have seen Donkey Kong setting sail in the wonderful world of Sea of Thieves. Granted, the graphics would not be nearly as impressive as the 4K gameplay out there, but it would fill an online multiplayer void on the Nintendo Switch that still remains empty one year since the console was launched.

We are happy to see Rare back in action, but we will always be left wondering what could have been if Nintendo acquired them instead of Microsoft sixteen years ago.

Richard Lucas has dusted off his super Gameboy and Snes and decided to tackle the awesome Donkey Kong Land which takes most of the core elements that made Donkey Kong Country a massive success and puts it on little spin on it by giving the player some new enemies , items and worlds to explore and find.  Whilst many may think that this is essentially another Donkey Kong Country, it is in fact a brand new set of levels spaced across 4 new worlds which admittedly borrow the same silicon graphics and backgrounds that made the country game a smash hit, messes things up and squeezes it into an 8 bit cartridge.  King K.rool has once again taken the Kong's beloved banana Hoard thanks to Cranky Kong who challenges Donkey and Diddy to have a game boy adventure that is as just as much fun as on the SNES and they have to do it in glorious 8 bits.  Donkey and Diddy accept the challenge and must battle their way through 4 new areas locating the various bonus rooms, smashing old and new Kremling foes, some pretty unique new bosses and all before a showdown with the King of the Kremlings himself K.rool in his own private airship at the end of the game.  Richard is going for a 100 percent completion run in one go and will show you how to find each and every bonus room the game has to offer as well as sharing some memories from his original Gameboy experiences!  Thank you so much for watching.  If you enjoyed this video please subscribe so you can be instantly notified when Richard Uploads a new retro episode!

Today was public holiday. Happy Thaipusam everyone! Had a small argument with 13 this morning as I was still cranky and not feeling well. I went to see my doctor. As soon as I walked in, she smiled. I laughed too and said, "we see each other too often, aren't we" and she laughed too. She told me the cause my illness is mainly stressed. Seriously I love her so much. She's not an ordinary doctor who tells you to take medicine. She really explains throughly why I have it, what kind of medicines she prescribing and how I should take it. And today she gave me a little more - how to handle stress. ❤️❤️❤️ I was little early for my lunch with my beloved colleagues today. We had Nasi Kukus in our neighbourhood. Definitely going back for their "ABCDEFG" that I couldn't try today. And had coffee and valuable time. (And also heard very very happy news. Congratulations again!) Pokemon started this Valentines event and finally, I got Chansey! Omg! As soon as I saw this I ran out and walked to get this enormous pinky with an egg! (Now 135 pokemons). Last 2 photos are from the day before. My loves - mum & sassy kong. And cute Deana playing with "what-is-that-actually-called" that somekind balloon/bubble you blow and play with it. She was just sitting there, playing with it while I was eating with 13 and when her bf was busy on the phone behind her. I had a very productive day today. Got things done for mum, yummy lunch with OR (my M was absent) and caught Chansey! Yay
