“will! will, i’m so stupid!” mike shouts, biking fast toward the byers’ new driveway, where will stands in the garage.

“what?” will squints. “mike, is that you?”

“i’m so goddamn stupid, will!” mike hops off his bike and lets it fall to the side. will runs out to meet him at the sidewalk.

“well, yeah, you’re standing in the rain. you’re completely soaked. what are you doing?” will laughs. he pulls off his raincoat and holds it out to mike. “here, take my jacket.”

mike takes the coat from him and proceeds to toss it into the yard, taking will’s face in his hands—“if i’m misreading this right now, full permission to slap me in the face”—and kissing him right on the mouth, properly, like he should have done a long time ago.

they’re being doused with rain but that’s not why will is trembling. will pulls away from the kiss, lips parted in pure disbelief, an incredulous laugh only faintly heard by mike as thunder cracked above them.

“will—“

“mike?”

mike’s nervous.

“yeah?”

mike’s heart breaks for the glossy, wide-eyed look will is giving as he looks up at him. “are you being serious?”

mike swallows. “of course i am.” his voice is soft. “i’m always serious about you.”

there’s a tear running down both of will’s cheeks, the look in his eyes hopeful and petrified.

“mike, i—i don’t understand.”

“you lied to me, will.”

will, teary-eyed and perplexed: “what?”

“the painting.”

“oh.” will looks down at the sidewalk before looking back up at mike, scrubbing a hand over his face. “yeah, i’m sorry. i just thought—i don’t know, i knew you missed el and i love you both and i just wanted you to be happy. so i told you she commissioned it.” will sighs. “so, you must’ve talked to her?”

“yeah. uh, about that. we broke up just now.”

“oh. i’m so sorry to hear that.”

mike smiles softly. “nah, don’t be. we’re friends now, me and el. it feels good.”

will stands straighter now, gets an unreadable look in his eyes.

“but will, this isn’t about el and me. the painting… that’s not all you lied about.”

will looks at him like he knows what he’s talking about, but he doesn’t know if he can bring himself to explain it.

“mike, i—“

“you love me, will byers.” mike smirks.

“of course i do. you’re my best friend.”

“no, will, you love me.” mike steps closer and takes a deep breath. he can’t believe this is real. “you’re in love with me, will.”

will blinks, slowly, and takes a sharp breath.

“i never said that.”

mike steps closer to him now, firmly in will’s space, his wet hair dripping rain onto will’s shoulders. they both shiver. it’s not from the raindrops.

mike is exhilarated being this close to will, and instead of running away like he used to, he chooses to lean into the feeling.

he makes a bold move and places two fingers under will’s chin, gently tilting will’s face upward so that will has to look directly into his eyes.

you’re the heart.

“you didn’t have to.” mike leans in and closes that gap once and for all, once and forever, not denying himself another moment of this, of them.

twenty minutes ago he didn’t know this was a concept. standing here now, it’s the most natural thing in the world.

they kiss on the sidewalk, getting poured on, and mike isn’t sure if lightning strikes or if it’s just this electric boy, the one that’s his now, has been his all this time.
