Hot Buns
A random snippet into the lives of Annalise & Mark Sloan. Technically a part 2.5? Let me know what you think & thank you for reading 🤗
Pairing: Mark Sloan x Fem!Reader
Warnings: allusions to smut but no actual smut, sickeningly sweet fluff

To anyone who didn’t know Mark Sloan or Annalise Grey-Sloan, life at Seattle Grace was the same as it had been for the past few months. The ex-couple decided to give their relationship a try once more, with Annalise having gone so far as forgiving Mark and allowing him to take her out on a few dates.
No one picked up on the innocent flirting between the two; the looks and giggles shared, the secret touches whenever they stood in the same vicinity. No one had ANY idea of their little rendezvous in the on call rooms. Or at least, that’s what Mark and Annalise thought.
“So are they going to eye fuck each other the entire time or are we going to actually learn something today?” Alex Karev grunted, standing off to the side as Mark and Annalise “discussed” the case they were working on together. Cristina and Meredith rolled their eyes at him.
“Well I for one think it’s great that they’re speaking again. Little Jolie deserves to have both of her parents happy,” Meredith shrugged, smiling to herself at the sound of her sister’s giggle at whatever the “plastics God” said to her.
“I agree with Mer. A less angry Annalise means more surgeries for me to scrub in on. So if McSteamy wants to McGet-It-On with her, I’m all for it. I’ll even buy her condoms if she wants,” Cristina said cheerfully, not noticing the power couple creeping up behind her. Annalise cleared her throat.
“Well thank you for that, Dr Yang. I’ll keep that in mind. Are we good to start rounds or would you prefer I gave you details on which condoms I prefer for your future reference?” The brunette asked, an eyebrow raised playfully at Cristina and her sister. Annalise didn’t care about what was said about her when it came from friends, and she loved to torment interns as much as she could. Cristina had enough sense to blush and look away while Alex snickered before Mark called out to him.
“Oi, Karev! Let’s get a move on, these patients won’t heal themselves!” He barked, making his way down the hall but not before winking at Annalise.
Anna smiled, and rolled her eyes playfully at the intern who immediately followed after Mark. Her smile lingered a little too long on his retreating form, and when she turned back to Meredith and Christina, she couldn’t escape their teasing smirks.
“Wipe those grins off your faces,” Annalise scoffed, walking around them and doing her best to ignore the heat trying to creep up her face.
“Well you two look close,” Meredith teased, her signature smile on her face. Christina snorted in agreement.
“Close is an understatement. Sloan’s one step away from sticking his tongue down her throat with every passing longing glance,” she said dramatically as they stopped outside the patient’s room. Anna genuinely laughed at that, resulting in the patient, Mark and Alex to look over at the three doctors who stood by the door.
“Sorry Mrs Sheffield, I’m Doctor Grey-Sloan. These are my interns, Doctor Grey and Doctor Yang. I’ll be assisting Doctor Sloan with your procedure. I’ll be in charge of making sure your heart doesn’t give out while Doctor Sloan works on the external repairs on your abdomen while removing that superficial tumor and patching you up as good as new. I promise you, you’re in great hands,” Annalise reassured the patient gently, reaching over and giving her hand a squeeze. The older woman smiled back kindly and looked between Annalise and Mark, the latter already standing off to the side and prepping a game plan with Karev.
“You said your name was Grey-Sloan? Any relation to the stud?” Mrs Sheffield nodded towards Mark unabashedly, her voice hushed. Anna’s smile widened.
“Mhmm, he’s my husband.”
“Oh you’re one lucky girl. If I were 30 years younger I’d be climbing him like a tree. Do you see the buns on him? Oh the way I’d like to give’em a quick squeeze,” Mrs Sheffield went on, her voice not as hushed as she thought. Annalise chucked and noticed the tips of Mark’s ears slowly turning a light shade of red.
“Alright Mrs Sheffield, let’s keep that heart rate down,” Annalise teased. “We’ll be back later to get you prepped for surgery. In the meantime, Grey, please make sure we have an OR booked and Yang, please get Mrs Sheffield ready with the pre-surgical team. Karev, please follow up with pathology one final time about Mrs Sheffield’s most recent blood tests so we can confirm we’re good to start on time. ”
Christina, Meredith and Alex nodded and stepped out of the room to get started on their tasks immediately. Before Anna could make it out the door however, she heard Mark yelp. She turned around and found Mark rubbing his backside as he scurried out of the room, Mrs Sheffield winking at her and smirking to herself while rubbing her hands together. “I’ve still got it!” She cheered, and Mark pulled a tittering Annalise out the door with him.
“That was not funny, I feel violated and objectified,” Mark whined, his grip gentle on Annalise’s elbow, pulling her with him down the hall and around the corner. Anna’s chuckles broke into a full on belly laugh at Mark’s flushed face. They stopped walking, and Anna used the wall behind her as support while she laughed.
“You should have seen your face!” She giggled. Mark, who was thoroughly embarrassed, found his gaze softening at the sight of his wife laughing wholeheartedly. And yes while it was at his expense, he wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. He rolled his eyes, playfully annoyed, a smile playing on his lips as her own giggles were infectious.
“Are you done?” He asked, crossing his arms as he looked down at her.
Anna did her best to stop laughing, biting her lip and looking up at Mark with a somewhat innocent expression. Mark felt his heart flutter at the sight of her.
“I’m good, I’m good. God it’s been so long since I laughed like that,” she sighed, smiling brightly. Mark smiled back and shook his head.
“Yeah, and it took me being assaulted by an elderly woman squeezing my ass for you to laugh that hard. You’re welcome,” Mark sassed. Annalise quirked an eyebrow teasingly at him.
“You weren’t complaining when I was the one squeezing your ass in the on call room earlier…” she said, lowering her voice as she looked up at him coyly, daring him to play along.
Mark’s eyebrows shot up in surprise before he immediately collected himself and reacted accordingly, smirking while bringing his right arm up and above Anna, bracing it on the wall behind her. His other arm reached towards her, his hand engulfing her waist as he stepped closer to her, caging her between the wall and himself. What Mark didn’t do, however, was check to see if the coast was clear before speaking; his voice taking on a more deep and gravelly tone.
“Well, I am a gentleman. Who am I to deny my woman from grabbing my ass when she’s down on her knees for me with her mouth wrapped around my—“
“AH-DONT YOU FINISH THAT SENTENCE MARK SLOAN,” an incredulous voice spoke up and both doctors jumped apart at the sound of Miranda Bailey.
“This is a god damn hospital, not a whore house, keep that kind of talk OUT of the halls! What is wrong with people today, talking nasty while I’m trying to my damn job,” Miranda muttered to herself as she continued her way down the hall, glaring at the couple.
Mark and Annalise took one look at each other and cracked up at the hilarity of it all.
“I can see why the interns call her the Nazi,” he muttered, crossing his arms over his chest again. Annalise nodded and continued to watch Doctor Bailey make her way down the hall, before she turned back to glare at them once more before she turned the corner.

By now, Sandra Oh is a household name: We know (and love!) her as Cristina Yang in Grey’s Anatomy, scene-stealing Patti in Under the Tuscan Sun, and as the titular role in Killing Eve. Oh has established herself, but some of her most exciting roles these days aren’t coming from big names in Hollywood—instead, they’re coming from younger millennial creators, and Oh is glad for it.
“It’s like being able to get over a bad boyfriend. They’re not going to call,” Oh said in a New Yorker interview published earlier this week of the white male directors who haven’t and probably won’t reach out to her to star in their projects. “Just move on and hang out with the young women who want you to be their mom. If you’re going to put all your stock and wait for the white dude to give you the opportunity, or to give you the validation, or to say, ‘Now you can be who you are, because I say so’—that’s destructive.’”

…………………………………………………………………
The second Alex left the room, Jo let out a breath that came out as a sob as tears spilled over onto her cheeks. Before she could press the call button, Meredith and Link came in. Link rushed over and wrapped his arms around her as Meredith sat next to her and put her arms around her shoulders, as they both hugged her. Jo let herself cry, letting the tears and the emotions, the stress, the worry, and the fear spill out. She took a moment to fall apart again.
When she pulled back, Link wiped her eyes and hugged her shoulders. Jo took another deep breath as they both nodded. Even though she knew Alex was strong enough to be there for her. She knew he wasn't ready to have the conversation she was about to have with Meredith and Link. They waited for her, having sensed what she needed from them. One last tear slipped from her eyes before she wiped it away and then she nodded, finding her voice.
“I need your help to get everything sorted before the surgery. I need to write a will and get my affairs in order. I also need you both to help me sort out a plan to help Alex if anything happens,” Jo said as sure as she could, looking at them both.
“As much as I don't want to think about it, I promise you that I'm going to take care of Alex and the girls no matter what happens,” Link said with a somber nod that Meredith agreed with.
“Don't worry, Jo. Alex will be taken care of if anything happens to you, even if the worst happens,” Meredith said as she reached out and squeezed Jo’s hand.
“I know you will,” Jo said, with a small smile. “But, please don't let him run away. He’ll need our family, I want them to have that.”
“I'll make sure he stays here,” Meredith said with another reassuring squeeze of her shoulders.
“Good,” Jo said with her nod.
They pulled out some papers, Meredith knew what they needed and helped her format her will. It was easier than the last time she had written a will, before she had left Paul. She left everything to Alex and her daughters, but picked out a few pieces of sentimental things to give to Link, Meredith, Stephanie,and her friends.
She gave out her jewelry and things to give to the girls. She gave Luna the necklace she had worn on her wedding day. To Helena she gave the sapphire bracelet Alex gifted her on their first anniversary. She entrusted Alex with her wedding rings, asking that he would give her engagement ring to Helena and her wedding band to Luna so that they both might have a piece of the love she and Alex had as they grew up. She had bought Alex a new watch for his upcoming birthday and entrusted it to Meredith for the time being. He had so many things from her, and she knew he’d appreciate them.
Then Jo started writing letters to them. She wanted to write a letter to Alex, and then Luna, and Helena to read after her death. That's what she was writing when they came. Alex held both girls, one in each arm as they came in. Jo instantly shuffled the papers away and Alex pretended he didn't see them. Meredith got off the bed and quickly shuffled the papers away. She also hid the letters in Jo's bedside drawer.
“Mama,” both of the girls shouted as they smiled and wiggled out of Alex’s arms. The girls lit up as they saw her, and Jo managed her first real smile she had since this all happened.
“Hello, my girls,” Jo said as she reached out for them.
Jo was relieved that they didn’t seem scared but all the monitors and the oxygen that she had. Although Luna still looked over at all the equipment with wide eyes. They were used to her mother in a hospital setting, this was different. Alex looked at the drawer for a moment, his fingers twitching as if he wanted to open it, before he sat down on the bed next to her and managed to smile for their girls. He let the girls go and they crawled up to her as Jo wrapped her arms around them, giving her daughters a hug and a kiss on their cheeks before they settled in her arms, with one on each side.
“How was daycare? I saw you guys did some painting today and that you had some goldfish for a snack. That must have been a fun treat.”
“Yeah, they were telling me all about the fishies, weren’t you girls?” Alex said as he relaxed too and smiled at them.
Luna told her all about it, using a few words, but mostly signing and Helena babbled on about the fishies. Jo let her worries dissipate as she focused on her daughters. They were the best distraction after a long day and it was easy to let it all slip away as she enjoyed them. Link and Meredith slipped out, letting the two of them enjoy their family time and taking the documents with them.
They spent the rest of the evening together, having dinner and playing with the girls who soon fell asleep on the bed next to her. Addison and Maggie frequently checked on her and she had a few more tests, blood work and ultrasounds to ensure that the baby was doing well. Along with constant fetial and heart monitoring.
Then they discussed scheduling the surgery. Maggie said she could do it the next day, and Addison. However, Jo realized that she wanted more time to get things settled, time to spend time with her family and the baby. Therefore they agreed to schedule it for three days from now, on that upcoming Thursday. This gave her enough time to finish her letters and her will.
Link had agreed to go to their house and get them the things they needed to stay the night. He returned with two duffel bags for them and one for the girls along with their pack and play for them to sleep. The girls were used to sharing a bed and did so occasionally as they crawled into each other’s beds. He had mostly packed for her thought, and had brought her pillow and her favorite blanket along with her favorite robe. It was the fluffy white one she had stolen from the hotel at Bailey's wedding all those years ago. It was faded, but still soft and one of her favorite comfort items.
That night, the nurses brought them dinner and made sure she had extra pillows and a warm, softer blanket. Jo was always so thankful for the nurses and all their support. If anyone knew how to go above and beyond to take care of them, it was the nurses at Grey-Sloan Hospital and Jo appreciated them so much. When Helena was born, they had done something similar. They made sure she was comfortable, gave her extra treats, and ensured that she and Alex got in a few naps, while they spoiled her baby. They had always done it for Luna, spoiling her in the NICU and she knew they'd do it for her when she had this baby. If she lived to have this baby.
To her surprise, Alex fell asleep before her. He relaxed in the lounge chair next to her and pulled up the footrest as he laid back. Helena crawled up onto his chest and Alex put a blanket over both of them. They soon fell asleep together and even Luna was soon snoring at her side, curled into her, but Jo couldn't sleep. Even after the nurses came in and turned off the TV and turned down the lights. They insisted she get some rest and that they wouldn’t check on her for a few hours, but Jo was restless.
Instead, she pulled out her pen and paper and began to write more letters. She wrote well into the night, but it never seemed to be enough. There always seemed to be something more to say. She wanted the girls to have a letter for each special occasion. She started from birthday to the first days of school, middle school, high school, graduation, growing up falling in love, starting out on their careers, their lives, and the happy moments that she imagined would come. Their wedding days and engagements, if they chose to have one. She wasn't sure, so she also wrote it to them for when they decided to commit to their partner.
Then she wrote her letters to Alex, for the first day afterward, the first wedding anniversary, the first year, and so on. She wrote down everything she wanted him to know and wanted to say to him. Words of love and reassurance, words of guidance and hope that he would find happiness for the sake of their daughters. Although she was selfish enough to hope he wouldn’t be with someone else. By the time she was getting the last few of her letters, the sun had risen and she watched the sunrise through her window.
“You should get some rest,” Carina insisted as she put her stethoscope back around her neck. Carina had already gone home, slept and came back.
Despite her yawn, Jo looked down at her writing. “I want to write all this down for Alex and the girls in case I die on the table.”
“You shouldn't think like that,” Carina scolded her with a frown. “This is a good surgery, an easy surgery, and chances are you will make a full recovery.”
“I know, but they don't call it Grey-Slone death for nothing. We both know what could happen,” Jo said as she looked up at Carina who had a softer, somber face.
“Just try and at least get a few hours of sleep,” Carina said as she put her hand over Jo's on her pen, causing her to falter in her writing.
Jo paused and realized how tired she was. She closed her eyes for a second and Carina easley took the pen and papers from her hands without a fight. Carina tucked the blanket over her, and Jo let her take Luna too and place her in the pack and play next to the window. Still, she did try to rest, but her mind wouldn’t let her sleep. Instead, she watched the sun rise higher in the sky. She got up and took Luna back, snuggling with her and eventually Helena, as she briefly woke up and crawled over into Jo's arms. She snuggled them in her arms and appreciated the moment she had holding her girls.
Jo also looked over at Alex as he slept, memorizing his features and taking a few pictures of him to capture the moment. She hoped that he would have these pictures forever. Eventually, he woke up with a yawn. Alex looked around for a second before he stood up and stretched, his back creaking as he did. He stretched even more to get out the ache in his joints as he rubbed his back.
“I’m probably going to have to pull one of the couches in here if I'm going to be spending the night again,” Alex said as he looked back at the recliner with a sigh.
“You shouldn't have to. You should go home and sleep in our own bed with the girls. You'll need some good rest for the days ahead,” Jo said, giving him a slight frown, although she knew he wouldn't leave her.
“I don’t mind it so much, and it’ll be okay for a few days,” Alex nodded, smiling back at her. He was trying to ease her mind and she let him. Alex sat on the bed and put a hand on Helena’s back. “Do you want me to take them from you?”
Jo shook her head and kissed Luna and Helena’s forehead. She couldn’t bear to part with her girls and he didn't try to take them from her. Instead, he sat on the bed next to her. He picked up Luna as he wiggled into the spot next to her, sitting next to Jo as he wrapped an arm around her shoulder and let Luna sleep on his chest. Jo turned into him with a sigh as Alex ran his fingers through her hair and rubbed her forehead in gentle circles. She was asleep before she even realized what he was doing.
…………………………………………………………………
Alex soothed Jo as she slept, running his fingers through her hair long after she had fallen asleep. He held her, savoring as many little moments as he could with her and replaying them in his mind. He was so caught up in the memories that he almost didn't notice Meredith had come in until she put a hand on his shoulder.
“Hey,” Meredith whispered, looking at him with eyes full of concern. “How are you holding up?”
Alex just shook his head and Meredith nodded sadly, silently understanding him.
“What time is it in Zurich?” Alex asked Meredith, looking up at her with determined eyes as Meredith pulled out her phone.
“It’s a little after 2:00 pm, so we could probably catch her,” Meredith said as she looked back at him. “But let’s not wake Jo and the girls.”
Alex agarred and slipped away from Jo carefully and paused as his arms left her. He waited, fearing she would wake up feeling that he was gone, but she slept on. Jo sighed but slept on and he kissed her forehead. He made sure that Luna and Helena were still around her with the blankets tucked around them all. They both left the room and walked down the hall to the bench by the window. The rain pelted against the window in a steady beat. They sat down and Alex pulled out his phone, calling Cristina himself.
It rang a few times but Cristina was quick to pick it up. “Hey evil spawn what are you doing calling me so early? You never call me.”
“Cristina it's Jo,” Alex let out a breath.
They could both feel Christina's mood instantly shift. “Tell me everything.”
And Alex did. He told her all about Jo's symptoms, diagnosis, and what Maggie saw on the scans. Along with the treatment plan Maggie and Addison had and the surgery that had planned.
“Well, I agree it's a good plan,” Christina said, sounding sure. “I don't think they'll have any trouble with it and hopefully Jo's heart will get stronger after valve replacement, but if it fails I can fly her out and I can get her in the trial for my 3D printed hearts. We're on the second phase of the trial and everything's going really well. The hearts last even longer than a donor heart.”
“Well, I was hoping you would come out and do the valve replacement,” Alex said, holding his breath as he waited for her responses.
“Alex, it's a simple surgery, Maggie's got more then enough skills to handle it even if there are complications,” Cristina tried to reassure him.
“It's not about her skills,” Alex had interjected, the stress in his voice taking over. “You're the best Cristina and it's Jo. You're the only person I want working on her heart.”
“Okay,” Cristina said softly, agreeing with him. “I'll hop on a flight and be there by tomorrow. But you better name your kid after me for this.”
She joked with him and Alex managed a smile. “We'll see about that.”
“Besides you're supposed to name it after me,” Meredith interjected as she lightly elbowed him.
“Was that Meredith? what did she say?” Cristina asked as Alex took her on speaker and Meredith repeated herself.
“I said they have to name the baby after me as I'm the baby's godmother.”
“No way, if I do this surgery you have to name the baby after me,” Cristina argued back as Meredith got riled up and opened her mouth to say something.
Okay, okay, let's just wait and see, besides Jo wants to name them something unique,” Alex said, ending this argument before it could snowball.
“Alright, we’ll see what happens,” Meredith said with a little smile that Cristina couldn't see.
“Fine, but I don’t like it,” Cristina said with her usual snippy tone.
“Thank you for doing this Cristina,” Alex said, feeling a little bit more relieved now that she was doing Jo's surgery.
“Of course Alex,” Cristina said sincerely. “You and Jo are family and I do anything for you both.”
Alex got choked up on that and just nodded, although he knew Cristina couldn't see it. Meredith put an arm around his shoulder and replied for him instead.
“We'll see you soon Cristina,” Meredith said with a smile.
“See you both soon,” Cristina's head before she promptly hung up on them.
Meredith put a hand on his shoulder absent-mindedly rubbing his back. He felt more relieved now that Christina I was doing the surgery. it's not that he didn't trust Maggie or think that she was a good surgeon but. It was Jo and he wanted Cristina because he knew her like a sister and he trusted her more than anyone. Alex took a breath that came out shaker then he expected. Despite his relief he was still so scared that he would lose her. It’s in that moment he broke down crying into incessant sobs.
“Oh my God Meredith, what if I, what if I lose them both.”
“You're not, You're not going to lose them,” Meredith said forcefully, choosing to believe it. “Maggie showed me the scans and the surgery plan. Jo's heart valve isn't that bad. It's mostly aggravated by the increased blood flow due to her pregnancy. Besides, Cristina has done this surgery a hundred times and she’s the best Alex. She's never lost a patient on this surgery.”
“But it's still surgery on my pregnant wife! We all know how generic surgeries can go wrong. What if something goes wrong and she dies. What if labor is too much and Jo's heart gives out? There's a very real possibility that I could lose her and the baby if not now then later.”
“Yes that's a possibility, but you have to focus on the facts that statistically this will go well, okay. You can't let yourself drown in what ifs,” Meredith said forcefully grabbing his shoulders and forcing him to look at her. “Okay, you have to stop thinking like this. You have to believe that Jo and the baby are going to be okay. Do you hear me! Say it to me now, Jo and the baby are going to be okay.”
“Jo and, and the baby are going to be okay,” Alex forces himself to say it, but not believing the words.
“Good, say it again.”
“Jo and the baby are going to be okay,” Alex said, the words coming a little easier this time around.
Meredith nodded before she pulled him in for a hug, gripping him tightly. They didn't say much after that. Meredith hugged him for the longest time before they went back to Jo's room. Meredith followed him, staying with him for a little while, doing some chart work as he tried to find something to occupy his mind. The little game that he had played earlier with Luca did the trick for a minute, but his mind wouldn't let him be distracted for long. He eventually tried to fall asleep again as the night wore on.
However, he had only nightmares. He dreamed of Jo fainting, but this time her heart stopped. He watches helplessly as they tried to resuscitate her, but nothing worked. Maggie called the time of death and he watched helplessly. He flashed to Jo’s funeral as he stared at her in the coffin. Helena and Luna looked up at him, holding his hand as they asked 'Where's Mama?' Their voices echo the questing in his mind. He just stood there at her grave, day after day, after day as the seasons changed around him, but he couldn't move, he couldn’t leave her. In his dreams, he heard Jo call his name. Alex. Alex.
“Alex!”
Alex's eyes opened up as he sat up. He was hot and sweaty all over as he looked around. He recognized the hospital room around him in the morning light. Jo was standing over him, alive and well holding her belly and looking at him with eyes of concern though.
“Are you alright? you were crying out in your sleep and thrashing around,” Jo said as she rubbed his shoulder with a warm hand, but he just shook his head.
Alex just stood up and hugged her and Jo didn't need him to explain why. She just hugged him back as he held on to her tightly. The lingering effects of his dream still haunted him. Although he told Meredith he would hope and believe that Jo would be alright, a part of him knew that there was a possibility he could be standing over her grave.
“It's okay, I'm right here,” Jo whispered to him as she pressed up against him and he felt their baby kick against his stomach and held onto her a little bit longer.
“What are you doing out of bed?” Alex scolded her although not fully letting go of her and keeping one arm around.
“I was getting some water and going to the bathroom,” Jo said as she gestured to the empty water bottle next to her.
“Let me help you,” Alex said, putting one around her and for today she let him.
He followed her into the bathroom and waited for her, filling up her water bottle and then helping her back into bed. He moved the girls into the pack and play and got Jo settled in bed again. As she looked up at him, he knew what she would ask before she said it. He crawled into bed with her and held her again. Jo seemed to easily fall asleep again and she slept peacefully, which is something he was thankful for. He held her and didn't fall asleep again, but drifted in and out of consciousness for the next couple hours. Sleeping while holding her helped and the nightmares didn't come back that night.
Until his nightmare came true.

“Are you planning to follow a career in Magical Law, Miss Granger?” asked Scrimgeour. “No, I’m not,” retorted Hermione. “I’m hoping to do some good in the world!”
*
“Hermione drew herself to her full height; her eyes were narrowed and her hair seemed to crackle with electricity. "No," she said, her voice quivering with anger, "but I will write to your mother.”
*
“Hermione slid out of her bunk and moved like a sleepwalker towards Ron, her eyes upon his pale face. She stopped right in front of him, her lips slightly parted, her eyes wide. Ron gave a weak, hopeful smile and half-raised his arms. Hermione launched herself forwards and started punching every inch of him that she could reach. 'Ouch — ow — gerroff! What the — ? Hermione — OW!' “You — complete — arse — Ronald — Weasley!” She punctuated every word with a blow: Ron backed away, shielding his head as Hermione advanced. “You — crawl — back — here — after — weeks — and — weeks — oh, where’s my wand?” She looked as though ready to wrestle it out of Harry’s hands and he reacted instinctively. “Protego!”

In a way, her strangeness, her naiveté, her craving for the other half of her equation was the consequence of an idle imagination. Had she paints, or clay, or knew the discipline of the dance, or strings, had she anything to engage her tremendous curiosity and her gift for metaphor, she might have exchanged the restlessness and preoccupation with whim for an activity that provided her with all she yearned for. And like an artist with no art form, she became dangerous.

As Amory walked into the kitchen in the morning, she stopped in her tracks, noticing sugar, chocolate and flour all over the countertops.
“Whoa, the bomb that wen toff here was a cake?” The short blonde asked, her eyes widened.
“8 hours, 16 ounces of chocolate and 32 cupcakes, and they still don’t taste right. Do you want to try one, maybe you could tell met what’s missing.” The tall blonde offered her friend.
“Sorry, Iz. I’ll have on later, gonna stick with toast and coffie, than you.” She moved to make herself some coffie and put some bread in the toaster.
“These are goor. MArtha Stewart would be pround.” George complimented the baker.
“Yeah, well, look where it got her… There’s something missing, some specific ingrdient.” She scratched her head, as her short friend put some butter on her now toatsed bread. “Why can’t I remember?”
“Look, just call her. Call you mother and ask.” The boy suggested.
“I don’t wanna call my mother.” She answered, seemingly moody. The other two shared a look before shrugging. The small blonde now sat beside him, eating her usual breakfast.
“Good Morning!” Derek came into the kitchen, accompanied by Meredith, adn George offered them a cupcake.
“You know, I like it here. Hey, you said so yourself, you liked having your things around, sleeping in your own bed…” The man pointed out, reaching for the meusli, as the group sat at the table.
“You are like a health nut, aren’t you?” George asked, everyone giving him quizzical looks. “You eat meusli every morning.”
“So what, I also eat the same thing everyday. Let him eat, George.” The young intern complained.
“I don’t” He defended himself.
“Okay, the meusli thing… you do.” The taller blonde pointed out, Amory and George nodding along. “At least, the last seven days.”
“Oh, come one!” The attending approached his girlfirend, meusli and milk in hand. “I haven’t been her for a wholle week… have I?”
“You have.” The short blonde said in a teasing manner.
“See, even they think it’s weird.” Meredith pointed out.
~~~~~~
Cristina, Meredith and Amory now talked to a psychiatrist, trying to find out who a patient belonged to.
“This guy belongs in psych. What are you doing dumping him here?” Cristina complained.
“He’s my gift to you. Had a seizure two days ago, his family thinks he’s dangerous and they had him committed.” The short blonde points our.
“Right, he’s psych, not neuro.” The dirty blonde said, plainly.
“Didn’t you go to med school?” Cristina scoffed.
“Yes, and unlike the correspondence school you three attended…” The psychiatrist insulted
“Oh, that’s to be Stanford, Dartmouth and Yale, right?” The Asian shot back.
“Sorry, ladies. We can’t take him back until he’s cleared.” The man informed.
“So you’re just dumping him on us?” The young intern sassed.
“He thinks his seizures are visions.” He said and left.
“Hello?!” The patient called from his room. “They’re not seizures, i’m psychic.”
“Of course you are, and I’m a chicken.” Cristina retorted, as they entered the room.
“Okay, Mr. Duff, we’re gonna start our work up now.” Meredith smiled at him.
“Work me up, work me down, I’m telling you, it’s a waste of time.” He said right back.
“I need you to grip my fingers, please.” Amory smiled down at him. Just then, the man seemed to zone out. “Hey, Mer, Cristina.” She called out.
The girls looked at the mand and immediatly realised why the girl called them. “Mr. Duff?” The Asian called out.
“Mr. Duff, are you okay?” The short blonde shook his shoulder lightly and he looked right back at her.
“Someone…” He started. “Someone is gonna check out.” At that, Cristina rolled her ayes, the small girl besides her furrowing her brows. “Bye bye.”
“Man, he’s nuts.” The curly-haires woman let out, as the young intern her het lightly.
“I’m dizzy, not deaf, lady. And I’m telling you someone in the fourth floor is gonna die.”
“That’d actually be Dr. Yang, Mr. Duff, not lady.” The young blonde defended her friend with the sickly sweet smile on her face that signalled that she was getting annoyed.
Just then, a voice was heard through the hospital’s speakers. “Code blue, fourth floor. Code blue, fourth floor.” The man raised hus hand as if to say goodbye, in a teasing manner. Meredith and Amory looked at each other with a mix of confusion and shock, Cristina remaining impassive.
~~~~~~
“Botox would do wonders on those frown lines.” The self-proclaimed psychic told Cristina, as she and Amory examined him.
“Okay, shut up.”
“Are allowed to talk to me like that? Is she?” He asked the smaller girl.
“No, but if I pretend I didn’t hear it there is nothing to prove it except your word.” She smiled, slightly annoyed now. Cristina answered him with a hiss.
“God, you’re hot… in a Mrs. Livingstone kind of way.” he smirked, Amory looking at him with a stern look.
“See these spikes on your temporal lobe? It mean you have epilepsy. Not visions, epileptic seizures.” The asain woman pointed out, showing him the paper.
“You think I’m epileptic? That’s so not right.” He answered.
“We don’t think anything, the graphs don’t lie, Mr. Duff.” The younger intern explained. “We’re going to get you an MRI now, to get a closer look at your brain, okay?”
“Yeah, there’s no way…” The patient started, right before entering his trance-like-state once more.
“Mr. Duff? Can you see me? Can you hear me?” The taller woman examined his pupils with a flashlight. “Stay with me.”
“Wouldn’t have picked you for the mommy track, Nurse Betty. Unless, of course, you choose what your friend did.”
Cristina backed away from the patient, shock in her face and Helena’s eyes widened and her soft smile left her face. The smaller girl turned around and left the room, without so much as a goodbye, leaning against the hallway door. She could feel a small anxiety attack rising, feeling vulnerable and expose by the revelation, and she closed her eyes, trying to keep it at bay.
When she saw her friend leave the room, she followed her to the closest on-call room. “Crisitna!” She called, as the woman entered the room.
When she got inside, she saw her sitting on a bunk bed. “What?” She answered, somewhat bluntly.
“I was just checking in on you. Is it… true? You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to, but I assure you I won’t tell anyone.” The young intern sat by her, the ever fimilair tightness in her chest rising and losing sensation on her hands. At the sight, her friend’s face softened.
“Thanks, Amory. Was yours true?” She leaned back on the bad.
Amory nodded slightly, tears filling her eyes. “I was nineteen, I thought I would be able to hande it, but it still hurts so much. It’s only been two years…” It was becoming harder to breathe by the second and her hands were now shaking. Cristina looked at her, compassion in her face and her expression soft, as the girl started to breathe more deeply. “I…” The young girl tried to take a deep breath.” I’m sorry, give m-me a minute.”
The young girl moved to another bed, eyes closed and focused on getting her breathing to even out. She held her hands to each other, trying to get feeling back to them. She focused on her sense, tried to rationalize her thoughts and put her head between her legs to keep the dizziness away. Her friend watched, a mixture of compassion and admiration in her eyes. A couple of minutes later, Amory opened her eyes, wiping the tears she’d let fall and sitting back by Crisinia once more, with newfound resolve on her face.
“When I was nineteen, I was r-raped. I got pregnant, and I had a hard time comiing to terms with the decision the end it, but I stand by it. I don’t tell this to anyone, unless it’s needed for a situation, or with my shrink.” She said, her voice now back to it’s usual conviction. “I’m sorry about that…” She waved her hands towards where she’s sat moments earlier, “Just, my anxiety gets worse when I feel to exposed.”
“You don’t have to apology, Amy. Besides, the way you pulled yourself together was pretty amazing.” The older intern said, her shoulder serving as a head rest for her friend.
“I meant to help you out… not the other way around. I just wanted to let you know that I’m here for you, whether you decide to keep it or not. I’m here.” The younger girl told her friend.
“You know, sometimes even the strongest people need to let others care for them, Amy.” Cristina told the girl, looking down at her. “I have an appointment for the sixteenth, I’m aborting.”
“Do you mind if I ask…” The young girl was unsure of how to pose her question. “I’m assuming it’s Burke’s. Does… does he know?”
“I’m not planning on telling him.”
“Okay, then… I won’t say anything either.” The friends say like that in silence for a whil, finding comfort in each other.
~~~~~~
After Cristina got of the case, Amory and Izzie get their patient in the CT machine.
“You’re into me, I can tell.” He tells Izzie, making Amory slightly roll her eyes. “Doctor small-and-angry was a hot appetiser, but you both are a smorgasbord of lust.”
The small doctor is clearly trying her best to ignore the mas, as the older intern warns him. “Mr. Duff, you’re pressing your luck.”
“Would you press it for me?” He asks with a smirk, Amory finally shooting him one of her famous reprimanding glares.
“God, that look is just like the one my mother used to give me.” He shiver slightly.
“Yeah, it’s her specialty.” The tall blonde chuckled.
“I hope you’re not claustrophobic.” Amory said with a sickly sweet smile, as he stared at her friend.
“You’re staring at me, stop.”
“I’m staring at you sweetheart, but it’s the strangest thing, I’m hungry for a chocolate cupcake.” Amory’s eyes widened once again at the affirmation.
“What did you just say?” The tall intern questioned him.
“A chocolate cupcake. Maybe one of those with the white squiggle on the frosting. Could you oblige?”
“What, do I still have some chocolate in my face or in my hear or something? I know the drill, so keep it up. Next, you’ll be reading mu cards, telling me my dead uncle is in the room.” The tall blonde rose her brows and the small girl’s eyes looked around her discreetly.
“Is he?” The man questioned.
“I don’t have a dead uncle.”
“Now, Mr. Duff, time to get in the machine.” The small girl patted it slightly and send him in.
~~~~~~
Cristina and Amory now sat at a desk, the former playing around with her food and the second eating her chicken sandwich while reading through another article she printed earlier in the week.
“If that’s turkey, can I have some?” George arrives, asking for their friend’s untouched food.
“It’s soggy.”
“Maybe it’ll kill you and solve everything.” Alex deadpanned, as he followed George to sit down.
“Hey!” Amory hit his arm. “Why do you always wish death upon others? George’s not dying.”
“I could have gottan that intubation. I’m good at intubations.” The short man complained.
“Why does everything in the hospital smell like a hospital?” Meredith asked them out of the belu, leaving right after, as Izzie joined the group.
“Don’t be so hard on yourself, George. Everybody makes mistaked.” The tall blonde recommends.
“Just don’t make the same mistake twice. That way it won’t have been for nothing.” Amory share once again a piece of her advise.
“You know, I’m good at a lot of things.” George squeaks, as his short friend pats his shoulder.
“We know you are, George.” The small blonde reassured him.
“You know what? I’m gonna tell you something. Hey, George, you need to get laid.” Cristina begins. “See that nurse over there? She’s single, she’s got red ahir, go ask her out.”
“Oh, Olivia? She’s cute, you should try it.” The younger intern encouraged, still in denial about her feelings towards the boy.
“In case you forgot, I intubated an esophagus!”
“Dudde, you’re tweaking. Maybe you should go see that psychic…” Alex teased.
“Mr. Duff is not a psychic.” Izzie yelled, annoyed.
“I am trying to help you!” The Asain woman told George. “Go buy her a latte and freshen up your gonads please!”
“If you want I could ask her for you!” Amory smiled at the boy.
As Izzie looked at her phone, she noticed her friend’s looks. “Shut up!”
“It’s not too late to call her, you know. I’m sure you have good reasons not to, but you can still change your mind.” The short blonde advised her friend.
“Yeah, moms like that, surprises on their birthdays. You know, it’s very hallmark.” George encouraged the tall blonde, earning himself a slight smile. At the lach of an answer both the boy and the shorter girl left.
~~~~~~
“Izzie, he’s already said no, why do you keep insisting?” Amory asked her friend, who dragged her to their patient’s room.
“Maybe if you tell him the same thing he’ll listen? I don’t know, okay, but please try?” The taller one pleaded.
The short blonde went silent for a moment thinking through her options. “Okay, fine, I’ll talk to him.”
“Yay, okay, thank you.” The tall blonde gave her a quick hug and they both entered the room.
“Mr. Duff? We’re here with te consent forms again.” The young intern started off.
“You really need to sign them. Your surgeon scheduled the OR.” As they noticed the man looking straight ahead, the girls looked at each other. “Mr. Duff, are you alright? Are you having another seizure?”
They approached him, looking at his monitor. “Yeah, I think maybe I am.” He answered.
“What is it?” The smaller girl aksed, resistant to hear the answer.
“It’s me…” Tears filled the man’s eyes. “I think it’s about to be over.”
“Mr. Duff, you saw the angio result. We’re doing the AVM just in time. No need to worry, we know what we’re doing.” The short girl tranquilizes their patient, kindness in her voice.
“You don’t need to be nervous, you’re not going to die. Promise.” Izzie assured him, Amory shooting her a glare. She knew that the girl shouldn’t be promising life, even if the odds were favourable.
“I’m not talking about dying.” He went silent for a moment. “My whole life has been about what I see, about believing in myself, whatever people think. You’re telling me there’s a very good chance that will go away.”
“Look, you’re a healthy guy. You’re gonna live a long, full life.” The tall blonde said.
“And, think of it like this, if your visions truly are real, then you have to believe you’ll still have them after the surgery. If you don’t, then you’ll have the rest of your life ahead of you, to discover this new version of yourself.” Amory looked at him, trying to give the best advice she could.
Izzie gave the patient the paperwork and he signed it. The man looked away, clearly scared for his future but, as the surgeons left the room he called out for Amory. “Dr. Madden?”
“Yes?” The small girl turned around, her friend already left the room.
“I know you try to ignore it, so I’m giving you a push; you like him, don’t let him slip away.” The blonde blushed, knowing exactly who he meant.
~~~~~~
As the interns sat in the tunnels, Amory laid in a bed, her legs over Meredith’s, while she finished her article she started earlier that day.
“I tirend to talk Shepherd out of that clot surgery. what is wrong with me?” Meredith let out.
“Basically, you tried to kill the guy.” Alex teased.
“Basically, you’re an ass.” Cristina shot back, Amory letting out a little laugh at the altercation.
“You know you want it…” Alex joked, before being cut off.
“Mer, you couldn’t have known. It’s another thing that makes us interns and Shepherd is an attending. We don’t have the experience to know better.” The small girl reassured their friend.
George then came in, pointing to his ID picture. “This is George. George has… a hot date.”
Amory’s head shot up in denial. Thinking she’ll now never get the chance.
“Who? Olivia?” The boy nodded at his closest friend’s question. “Yes, I told you she was nice.” The girl squealed, excited, covering the sadness taking over he features.
“Aw, that’s great, George.” Meredith told him.
“Left pocket of my lab coat. No glove, no love.” Alex stood up and George reached for his pocket, Amory watching with slight discomfort.
“I mean, sure, if Alex has to be a manwhore at least he does it with protection.” Amory giggled and the boy in question faked an offended look.
George sat in a wheelchair next to the group as Alex left an Izzie sighed. “Our psychic had his surgery.” The girl informed.
“Yeah?”
“I wonder what happened with his… gift.” The tall blonde finished.
“Come one, we all know he’s crazy.” Cristina commented, Amory looking at her knowingly.
“I thought you said you didn’t believe in that stuff.” Meredith told the tall model.
“I grew up in a trailer park, I waited tables, which was supposed to put me through college, but my mother was always calling these… psychics. All the time. And the bills started piling up so I had to use my money to pay them. when I turned eighteen I left, never went back.” The woman explained. “This guy has been saying things to me, things he couldn’t possibly know anything about, so I just… wonder.”
“Well, I don’t know if I believe that stuff, but he did say some things that he shouldn’t have known…” Amory revealed. The group fell in silence, changing the topic shortly after.
~~~~~~
As Amory lay on her bed, at the end of the long day, she shuffled through her article, but couldn’t bring herself to pay any attention to it. It has been a hard day, filled with anxiety and past events coming up.  So she decided to do the one thing that could always get her mind off something like this. She put on some of her favorite music and danced it out. Unknown about the boy that was standing outside her room.
Prompt: after the wedding episode (10x12), Alex, meredith and cristina make fun of Jackson (maybe april is present too).
It would have been hilarious, we deserved to see it lol
I may have read the prompt too fast and forgot about Meredith until after I wrote it. Ooops. But April's there, so all good?
Also, my medical expertise consists in 2 minutes of googling, so don't trust the science on this one.
___
The cat is finally out of the bag, everyone in the hospital finally knows that April Kepner is now Jackson Avery's wife, and it feels good to be able to take her hand whenever he feels like it (which is a lot), to throw an arm across her shoulders, to kiss her cheek and make her blush because "we're at work, Jackson!".
It feels good to even just sit with her at a cafeteria table, having lunch while next to them, Cristina and Alex argue about the surgical plan for their patient.
"I'm telling you, an aortic valve repair is the only way to go, Alex."
"Back off, Yang, we're not there yet."
"Yes, we are! Your patient already has stenosis. A valve repair lowers the risks of infection, can preserve the valve, and your boy will be as good as new."
"He's too young, I'm not going to make him go through open-heart surgery when he's 9."
Cristina scoffs.
"Who do you think I am? I'll use a less invasive method, I'm not heartless."
Jackson looks at April to see her already staring at him, smiling at their co-workers antics. He takes her hand and winks at her, and right on cue, she blushes and looks at him through her lashes, in a way that makes him hungry, but not for food.
Cristina stands up and glares at Alex.
"I love that surgery, Alex. I always have. I love everything about it. Even the things I don't like, like removing the catheter or talking to the family, I love. And I want it with me. I love it, and I think you'd love it too. Do you?"
Alex guffaws ("Forget it Yang, I'm not going to take your hand and run away with you") and April lets her head fall on the table, muttering "Oh God." He rubs a hand on her back, looking at Cristina, but honestly? He can't even find it in himself to be mad. He supposes he should be glad that Cristina is mocking him and not April, whose cheeks just got redder. And to be honest, so far Cristina has shown restraint and hasn't said anything about the Jackson Avery Wedding Interruption of 2013, besides proclaiming herself the founding member of April's fan club (though she should know that spot is already claimed by his truly). So he supposes he deserves this. Still, he feels like he has to protest.
"Get your own material, Yang."
"Oh, so now you don't like people going after what they want?"
He looks at April, looks at his wife (it may be his new favorite word in the whole English language), sees her smile, and finds himself grinning. Okay, so maybe he's a little smug about it all.
"Whatever, you thought it was awesome."
"Not as awesome as an aortic valve repair. I can talk to the parents if you want, Karev."
"Back off, Yang!"
Where We Might End Up - Lexie Grey x OC fanfic    Chapter 8: Like a Plague
S6/E4 ___________________________________________________
After two weeks, Richard had laid off some personnel and residents as a result of the merger between Seattle Grace and Mercy West. Derek had been stressing himself about the merger and about Richard. Meanwhile, Eric had been stressed out about the residents who had been in his service. He's stressed because his usual resident had been avoiding him.
It started after George's funeral - The same time when he decided to be nice to that same resident. Eric didn't know where he's more annoyed. The fact that his work is being affected because of the incompetent residents replacing her or that he didn't get to boast about it to Callie since she wouldn't even notice he's being nice because Eric and Lexie Grey wasn't interacting anymore. And even if he wanted to annoy Lexie now, he couldn't. The girl had been avoiding him like a plague and it's getting on his nerves.
Eric reached for the coffee as he paid at the cart. Meredith and Cristina arrived and queued behind him.
"Hey," Meredith greeted him.
Eric turned he pocketed his wallet, "Hey."
Cristina went through and ordered at the coffee cart, "Two please."
Meredith smiled at Eric as he sipped his coffee, "What's wrong with your sister?" He asked, furrowing his eyebrows as he swilled the hot coffee.
"Lexie? Nothing, why?" Meredith stated. Eric scoffed as he took another swig, staring at his cup.
Lexie turned out of the hall and into the lobby. She made her way towards the coffee cart and called Meredith, "Meredith!"
Meredith and Cristina looked at Lexie. Eric peeked back, seeing Lexie. Lexie quickly stopped, almost skidding on the polished floor. She staggered back towards the hall, nervously.
"Well," Cristina paused, "You, I guess?" Eric glared at her.
"She's avoiding you?" Meredith asked.
Eric stared at Meredith, eyebrows curved, "Tell me you're not that clueless?" He groaned, "I need a resident..."
"to torture?" Meredith completed his statement, amused.
"I need..." He implied, looking at Meredith, "a resident - not to torture, Grey. And Lexie, she knows how I move. She's - " trying not to over-complement the toddler, "- adequate."
" - the better grey," Cristina chuckled, murmuring aloud, recalling Eric's comment, "that's really epic," Eric glared at her. Cristina stared back, "You need a resident?" She gestured on herself, "hello? badass over here."
Eric shifted closer to Cristina - standing straight, chin up, both hands at his back, practically inspecting Cristina from head to toe. Cristina mimicked him, stiffly, glancing at Meredith.
"Chill, GI Joe," Cristina blurted out.
"Okay," He stated.
"Okay?" Cristina cackled and jumped, "Okay. Ha!" Eric nodded and walked away. Cristina followed.
- - - - -
Eric saying yes to Cristina working with him was the worst decision he made. A direct and sarcastic attending and overbearing and retorting resident shouldn't be in a same room. Sure, Her talents and surgical skills are impeccable, but he felt drained after a day of having Cristina at his service.
"No offense, but I don't get how a surgeon could focus on one organ," Cristina chuckled, holding the retractor, "I mean..." She huffed.
"Instead of being mediocre in several organs, why be a master of one," Eric smoothly responded.
"Said the trauma surgeon," Cristina retorted. Eric scowled at her. Cristina cleared her throat.
"I am, primarily a Neurosurgeon," Eric implied, "And... the brain is a complex organ. It's challenging to study its intricacies -,"
"Yeah, complex. Not as badass as the heart, though," Cristina interrupted. Eric glanced at her and stared back at the open cranium in front of them, "Oh, I miss the blood..."
"It's not just about the cut, Dr. Yang."
"Yeah, tell that to yourself again," She paused, "We all crave that thrill of the cut, Dr. Keaton," She glanced at him as she continued, "no offense."
"Have you had this conversation with Derek Shepherd?" Eric chuckled.
"Yes." She responded simply.
"What did he say?"
"The same way you did," Cristina responded, "Nothing."
Evening Attending's Lounge
Eric slammed at the couch, arm dangling down, closing his eyes.
"You met your match?" Arizona spoke as she chuckled.
"God, that bloody woman's exhausting."
Arizona pondered as she fixed her things inside her bag, "Yep. She is," She turned towards Eric, "But, she's brilliant, right?"
Eric crushed his face on the couch and muffled his reply, "yshhh" He sat up and continued, "I want my resident back."
Arizona's eyebrows furrowed, "my? who..." Her eyes widened as she realized, "Wait... You're..." She snickered, "Lexie!? Oh my go-"
Eric scowled at her. He sat as he continued, "The toddler... doesn't talk back. And she knows how to handle my post-ops, accurately."
Arizona smirked and sat beside him, leaning closer, "Just admit it - you miss her," Arizona chanted, "And you're kinder to her, now," Arizona went on, jabbing him with her index finger at his hip.
"Don't! - I'm not," Eric rose up and snagged his coat from the armchair.
"Where are you going?" Arizona yelled.
Hospital Lobby
Lexie is stepping towards the exit, searching for her keys inside her handbag, when she bumped into someone. She dropped her keys at the floor as she apologized to the person. She glanced down, and was about to get the keys when the person kneeled down to pick up her keys and stood back, handing over the keys to her.
Lexie was fidgeting with a pained gaze. Her shoulders were tensed. "Thank you," Lexie looked up. Her eyes widened. It was the person she had been avoiding. Eric stared at her, eyes narrowed, brows pulled down. Lexie became more conscious, fixing her loosed hair as she continued, "I I'm sorry Dr. Keaton."
Eric noticed that she was acting odd. She's somewhat edgy and worried, "Dr. Grey," He spoke, gently, "Are you -" He paused and instead gave her the keys.
Lexie smiled and looked at the keys as she held it. From what it looked like, she was almost about to cry but she's trying not to, "I-uh -thank you." She practically murmured, her voice almost breaking. She gulped hard, pushing her tears back.
"I-" He shook his head, "our brainstem glioma was scheduled tomorrow. You can scrub in with me," He added.
Lexie nodded and smiled as she walked past him, clutching at the car keys, and made her way outside. Eric followed her as she wearily walked inside her car. Eric can't help but feel there's something wrong with her. Concern grew as she drove away. Eric reluctantly went back in.
The Next Day Catwalk
Richard had called for a meeting with the attendings at Seattle Grace - the only time he went out and talk to his staff. Today is also the day when the attendings at Mercy West were scheduled for an interview with him.
After the meeting, Derek and Mark were the first to go out of the office.
"Is this what the end of the world looks like?" Mark stated, striding at the catwalk as he observed the residents dashing through below the catwalk, "with Webber enjoying danish at the front-row seat."
Derek replied with a groan. Mark stared at him as they walked at the catwalk. Derek kept his head lowered, slouching his shoulder.
Eric went out of the chief's office and went after Mark and Derek. He stepped towards them as he checked his phone.
"Do I need to ask Catherine for a job back in Boston?" Eric smirked as Derek glared at him, "What?" He chortled.
"You two need to shut up, today," Derek walked away, leaving Mark and Eric at the middle of the catwalk, "Not helping."
"Not in the mood, huh?" Eric implied as both he and Mark watched Derek lumbered away at the catwalk.
"Yep," Mark responded, "brainstem glioma today?" He added.
Eric nodded, "Well I'm going down at the pit," He said as he checked his phone, "Owen's asking for a consult."
Emergency room
Eric had finished his consult and cleared Owen's patient. He moved out of the room and pulled out his gloves.
"OK, hey! Pause! Way too many people here," Miranda shouted at the residents surrounding the blood-vomiting patient. Eric turned towards them as he heard Miranda's voice. He stepped further and saw Meredith and Lexie arguing.
Eric pulled Steve as he walked by, "What's going on?" He asked.
"That's Thatcher Grey - Meredith's and Lexie's father," Steve answered. Eric let him go. He hesitated to leave and looked at Eric, hoping that Eric didn't stop him just to ask that information - Maybe he really just stopped him just for that information. Steve walked away and left Eric, who's still staring at Lexie Grey.
As Meredith walked away Eric noticed Lexie pacing back and forth beside the close-curtained bed. Lexie continued glancing through the curtain and staring back at the floor as she trotted. Her shoulders were strained. Her eyebrows are knitted together. She kept biting her nails. - She's obviously worried about her father.
Eric moved closer - to ask her if she's okay or ask if she needed anything. But then he stopped, watching Lexie who had just stopped pacing as Miranda called her. He swung back and stepped away.
Surgical Wing
Even though Eric and Meredith considered each other as friends, knowing Meredith she would only confide on either Derek or Cristina so Eric went to do his scheduled surgeries. After his first surgeries, Eric stayed at the nurses' station right next to the surgical schedule board, going through his next surgeries. He put his hands on his hips as he scanned the board.
"I can be hardcore," Cristina blurted in a sultry manner.
Eric raised an eyebrow. He craned his neck to find out who said that - He saw Cristina Yang, flirting her way towards Jim Nelson. He observed as Jim strolled away when he realized that Owen was there.
"Are you whoring yourself out for surgeries?" Owen said, chuckling.
"Oh, shut up! You forced me to do it," Cristina blurted out. Owen laughed as he walked away. Eric stifled a laugh, which Cristina heard. Cristina turned to him. She widened his eyes. Eric could almost hear her brain working on an idea. Cristina stared at him as Eric looked back at the board.
"You had your chance, Yang," He implied, "So, no."
Her brows furrowed, "Oh, come on!" Cristina blurted, stomping her feet like a kid.
Meredith walked towards Cristina.
"Hey, Mer," Eric greeted Meredith, placing his hands behind his back.
"Hey," She glanced at him.
"Need anything?" He added.
She sighed as she looked at him, "Lexie - she's having a bad day. So, If you're planning to bully her, today. Don't. - That's what I need from you," She finished, as she turned back at Cristina.
Cristina grinned as Eric walked away from the twisted sisters. His pager beeped, sending him towards the ICU.
ICU Floor
Eric walked along the halls of the ICU Floor, trying to concentrate on his work than to think about the resident he'd been bullied. If only he knew he'd be this invested he would stop picking on Lexie Grey at the earliest. Eric remembered this started when He and George have that talk. - that conversation. He narrowed his eyes as he went on towards his patient's room. If George were alive, he would strangle him to death.
"Damn it, George," He said under his breath.
He turned left and continued his way at the hall. Eric stopped as he saw Miranda, Richard and Lexie at the end of the hall. Eric squeezed his eyes shut, pinching the bridge of his nose. - The world is playing with him right now. He glanced back at the group. Meredith stepped closer as they talked about something - about their father's transplant, he thought. And by Lexie's expression - who's glancing at Meredith like Bambi - she's not a match. Eric shook his head, resigning away from the Grey sisters, and moved inside the patient's room.
He stood tough, earning a stare from Steve as he checked the charts of the patient. Eric glanced at Steve and noticed a smile - combined with a sordid idea - forming on the resident. Eric knew what to do to stop his thoughts, "Tell me, Dr. Mostow," He put down the chart, "have you scrubbed in on a brainstem glioma?"
Steve stammered and grinned broadly. The neurosurgeon, not only blurted his name right, but he also asked him to scrub in with him. Eric looked at Steve, "I take that as a no. Let's go. You can scrub in," He added as they went out of the room.
Miranda and Richard had already left when Lexie saw Eric went out of a room close to Thatcher's. She observed him as Eric walked through the hall followed by Steve.
Evening Waiting Area
It was already evening when he and Steve finished their surgery. Steve went out first to inform their patient's family. Eric followed after he closed.
Eric arrived at the waiting area. The family was nowhere to be found. There was only one person there - Lexie. Mark walked by, and stopped beside Eric. Both were staring at Lexie. Both were feeling the same concern towards the younger Grey. - Anyone would, Eric would reason. She's alone. Who would be alone at a time like this?
"Richard found a donor?" Eric asked, crossing his arms.
"Meredith..." Mark answered. Eric looked at Mark, "She volunteered. Derek told me."
Eric looked back at Lexie, "How... unselfish of her," He paused. Mark was about to walk away when Eric stopped him, "You need to sit with her," Gesturing at Lexie. Mark looked at Lexie, "I would but - If I was her, I wouldn't want to see me," He chuckled, as if him being the bad guy is a joke, "She needs someone who genuinely cares for her."
Mark nodded and made his way towards Lexie - now, bending down, squeezing her head below her knees. She stood up as Mark walked closer. Mark hugged her as she broke down.
- - - - -
As the elevators ringed open, Arizona walked out and noticed Eric going in. She pulled Eric, stopping him from riding the elevator, "Hey, I thought you had a day off. Haven't seen you all day."
"I..uhh... surgeries," Eric said, as he stared at the closing elevator. He sighed as he turned to Arizona. Arizona peered at him intently as Eric stared at the floor, impatiently tapping his foot. He's unusually inarticulate - she thought. Eric looked at her as she remained silent.
"Are you going home?" She asked, "Callie and I are going out for dinner - want to join?"
"No, I - Go. I'm staying... patients," Eric said as he pushed the up button.
"Okay," Arizona uttered, "text me - if you change your mind," She added as she walked away.
PACU
It was 9 PM when they brought his patient at the PACU after surgery. 10 PM when Eric went up at the PACU, he saw Derek watching Meredith's room. Before he could check with Derek, his patient coded. Eric and his resident never left the room since then.
It was 2 AM. Steve volunteered to stay beside the patient as Eric went out of the patient's room. The patient has been stable for a while, and hopefully would remain that way. As Eric walked through the halls, he crossed by Meredith's and two rooms away from her room, Thatcher's. There he saw Lexie.
Eric stood where Lexie wouldn't notice him. Her anxiety was evident. But compared to what she looked like earlier, she's calmer now. He could sense relief between her furrowed eyebrows and creased forehead. Lexie sat at the recliner, constantly glancing at her watch and back at Thatcher, tapping her fingers at the armrest. Eric evaded her all day. He assumed it would not be a good idea to add further stress to her by showing his face - the face of the bully who's been giving her hell.
As he observed, Eric hadn't noticed his face copying her expression. Lexie rose up from her seat. Eric shook himself from his stupor and stepped away before being spotted.
- - - - -
Eric thought of bringing her coffee. Also, thinking about the fact that Lexie might not accept it from someone who's 'not a friend', he tried to figure out how to give it to her. As he pondered deeply in front of the cart, hands on his hips, tapping his feet and looking on the floor, an idea sprung up. He bought two cups of coffee - so when she would ask why he's bringing her coffee, he would explain he's giving the other one to Steve, the resident who's been working with him all day. He went back several minutes later carrying two cups of coffee, practicing an explanation for the cup of coffee.
His eyebrows furrowed. Eric wished that he would just walk in there with Lexie sleeping, making it easier for him to just leave the coffee there.
Eric noticed himself tiptoeing at the halls of PACU wing. He stopped. Eric exhaled deeply, staring at the coffee he's holding. - Maybe he's overthinking this. Eric proceeded walking normally. Laughing quietly at himself as he proceeded.
"bloody ridiculous," He muttered under his breath.
He had been all over the hospital. And, she had been all over the hospital. Eric had been using his energy avoiding someone and failing. He's too tired. And right now, He pondered, he didn't care anymore if Lexie's awake. He'll just give the coffee to her - no reasons, no whatsoever.
When he arrived, Lexie's not there. So he checked inside Meredith's room. There she was, dozing at the couch. Eric left the other coffee at the nurses' station before he carefully opened the door and walked inside.
Eric glanced at Lexie as he walked inside. He noticed her brows still creased, but a bit relaxed now. Eric walked further by the desk to lay the coffee cup. He halted, darting his eyes at her as Lexie moved, shifting her position at the couch. She pressed her arms hard against each other, bending her knees together. - She was cold. Eric moved again as Lexie settled. He quietly put the coffee at the table near Lexie and turned. He stepped towards the folded blanket at the end table, grabbed it and moved towards Lexie. Eric put the blanket on her, adjusting it properly. He smiled unknowingly as Lexie snuggled the blanket.
Eric slowly made his way towards the door, carefully sliding it open as he made out. He glanced back inside, checking if he had woken up the two sisters. Eric closed the door and walked towards his patient's room.
Meredith opened her eyes. She pretended to be asleep when she spotted Eric stepping inside the room, holding a cup of coffee. She was about to ask him why he's in her room, but decided not to, trying not to make him embarrassed. Meredith just observed him until he left.
Greys anatomy appreciation post:
I highly encourage people to dance their grief out, just the way Cristina Yang does. To be more precise, I force myself to practice “dancing-out“ to get rid of my sudden episodes of depression. I felt better and my anxieties reduced. I had a sense of self-control. that I could use the physical energy (dancing movement) to increase my mental and emotional energy.
I relate to Yang a lot, and i admire people that have similar qualities to her. ex, Workaholics, weirdos and braveries.
Another thing, Cristina Yang once said: screw beautiful. I’m brilliant. If you want to appease me, compliment my brain.
This mentality made me admire her even more. I love that her face is not the most important thing about herself (although she’s pretty and 🔥). It’s her brain, soul and energy. Unfortunately, people around us loose their souls by concentrating on their appearance and the materialistic part that we can’t feel their souls existing around us. We rarely find a great balance, a beautiful soul that matches the beautiful appearance. Anyway, there’s a lot to say in this topic but i will shut up now and dance it out.
Who gets pregnant in grey anatomy season 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and take the long-simmering job working for the president. Watch ‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Patrick Dempsey’s 10 Best McDreamy MomentsĪfter a stretch of bickering between Meredith and Derek, things in the midseason finale escalated to the point where they agreed that it would be best for him to head to D.C. Eventually, a confident Amelia (and Stephanie) saved Herman’s life - but at a cost: her vision, ending the star fetal surgeon’s career. Following her split with Callie, Arizona threw herself into work and broke down Herman’s rough exterior - and ultimately told Amelia about Herman’s secret. Nicole Herman arrived in Seattle with a chip on her shoulder and a big secret: She had an inoperable brain tumor and six months to live. Those flashbacks were instrumental in Derek’s death, as Meredith recalled the similar experience of police arriving at her home. Subsequent flashbacks also revealed Meredith recalling that her mother was in two hospitals: one when Maggie was born and a second when Ellis tried to commit suicide. In the season premiere, flashbacks revealed how Ellis gave birth to baby Maggie before she moved from Boston to Seattle with little Meredith. One of the better aspects of season 11 has been how Grey’s has honored its past. Ellis attempted suicide when Meredith was little. Read more How ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Broght Kate Burton’s Ellis Back to LifeĤ. As of now, they’re starting to date other people. Arizona, on the other hand, had the opposite reaction and realized just how great her life with Callie was. The resulting in-home separation ended with Callie realizing that she didn’t want to mend the marriage and wanted to break free of her codependence and regain her individuality. In an episode that spanned 30 days, Callie ( Sara Ramirez) and Arizona ( Jessica Capshaw) hit couples therapy in a bid to work out their issues. But still, Meredith’s new “person” has the thing that Mer fears the most. Granted, this played as a bit of an uplifting moment when Maggie learned that her late biological mother, Ellis ( Kate Burton), was the one with the Alzheimer’s gene - so she didn’t get it from her father, Richard. Maggie has the genetic predisposition for Alzheimer’s. (Let’s just hope she’s not pregnant after their final tryst, because - seriously - that could make Derek’s death even more depressing than it already is.)Ģ. This one is a fundamental change that opens the door to bring back a dark and twisty Meredith - who is now a widowed mother of two. Showrunner Rhimes said in a statement following Dempsey’s exit episode that she “never imagined saying goodbye” to the show’s “ McDreamy” - and neither did longtime Grey’s fans (and MerDer ‘shippers). Read more ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star on Patrick Dempsey’s Departure: It’s a “Fundamental Change” And while, yes, the show has been a downer of late, as Rhimes has been prone to say: TV gets boring when everyone is happy, and Grey’s is, after all, a drama. Chief among them was Maggie’s relationship with her then-unknown father, Richard ( James Pickens Jr.), and Meredith.Īhead of Derek’s funeral on this Thursday’s episode, here are 11 ways Grey’s Anatomy‘s 11th season has been its most depressing yet. Of course, Cristina’s departure opened the door for the long-running series finally to introduce Mer’s half sister, Maggie (new series regular Kelly McCreary) and to bring Derek’s sister Amelia ( Private Practice alum Caterina Scorsone) to Grey Sloan full time, which provided multiple stories to explore. The season opened on a downer, with Meredith ( Ellen Pompeo) and company getting used to life without Cristina Yang, following co-star Sandra Oh‘s decision to exit the series after season 10. You’re Not A Rebound
Intro: Hello, lovelies!! I hope you guys are having a good day/night!! Here’s one that’s been bouncing around in my head for a hot minute, enjoy!! :)
Note: Y/N is one of the top cardiothoracic surgeons and has been working at Seattle Grace Hospital for a few months, becoming close with some of the interns and even Dr. Addison Montgomery, what happens when a case of toxic blood comes around and you see Addison risk it to give the patient more anesthesia? Based off of Season 3, Episode 14 Wishin’ and Hopin’
Word Count: 1,242
Tumblr media
Since you had transferred over to Seattle Grace Hospital, you hadn’t had a boring day since, there was so much drama in this hospital, not like you were complaining, most times… You had come in to help with the more major surgeries, you being one of the top cardiothoracic surgeons out there, so your help was much needed at the hospital.
You were currently looking over some scans when Addison Montgomery came up beside you, her grabbing a chart from the basket “How are you?” You asked her, knowing that she was going through the divorce at them moment so she knew it would probably be hard for her “I’m fine, why do you ask?” She asked, you able to tell she was putting on a fake face “I was just-” you said, getting interrupted by your pager going off “Duty calls” you said, giving her a small smile which she returned, you feeling your heart flutter when she did, your crush on the obstetrician growing more the more you worked with her.
Later, you were working with Cristina to do an echo on Ellis Grey’s heart, you standing off to the side since you wanted her to do it “Everything alright there, Dr. Yang?” You asked, looking up from your notes and having noticed she was looking a little awkward working on Ellis “Perfectly fine, Dr. Y/L/N” Cristina said, glancing at you and you stared at her for a moment before you nodded, deciding to just let it drop “I want to see the doctor running the Alzheimer's trial” Ellis said, looking at you and you nodded “After this echo, I will let them know” you assured, looking at her and waiting for Cristina to finish before you had someone take Ellis back to her room.
A few hours later, you were heading to get ready for another surgery when your pager went off, making you raise an eyebrow as you rushed towards OR 1 “What’s going on?” You asked, looking at everyone, some of them using masks to breathe “The patient we have currently has toxic blood, knocked us all out” Richard filled you in, looking at you and you looked at the others “So, what do you need from me” you said, ready to help with whatever you needed to.
After a bit, you were helping get Burke and Derek ready to go in with the ortho suits “How much longer until they get here?” You heard Addison ask, glancing at her as she looked into the room “Like ten minutes” you said, finishing tying Burke up before you look at Addison “She’s waking up, we have to do something” she decided, tying a mask on and before you could stop her, she ran into the OR “Addi!” You shouted, following her towards the door, tying a mask on your face as well.
“Get out of there, Addison!” You shouted, watching as she quickly rushed to the machine and injected the girl with more anesthesia to knock her back out, you noticed that Addison was tripping over herself as she was rushing back for the door, you opening the door for her and catching her as she fell through the door “I got you, I got you” you promised, you heart beating a million miles a minute from how nervous you had gotten from her charging into that room “Let's get you on a machine” you said, leading her over and having her sit down before helping her hold a mask to her face.
You watched as she took some deep breaths, still looking out of it “Easy” you said when she tried to stand up, her gripping your arm when you pushed on her shoulder to keep her sitting “I need-” “You need to sit down, don’t you dare argue with me Montgomery” you said sternly, using your doctor voice to which she gave you a look which you ignored as you kneeled down in front of her and rested your hands cautiously on her legs, which she allowed you to do.
“I’m feeling better” you heard her say after a bit of silence, causing you to look up from where you were staring at one of the tiles “Okay” you said softly, standing up and taking the mask from her, the two of you locking eyes for a moment before Derek cleared his throat “We have to get the interns ready” he said, gesturing to them when they came into the room, you pulling away from her quickly as you nodded “Right” you said before going over to help them out.
Once you guys had saved the woman's life, you were walking down the hallway, muttering to yourself as you read over some notes, gasping when someone grabbed your arm and pulled you into a supply closet “What the-” you started, stopping when you were suddenly face to face with Addison Montgomery, the dim lighting making it hard for you to make out much, but you knew it was her, the long, red hair over her shoulders and those beautiful green eyes staring into yours.
“Dr. Montgomery” you breathed, looking at her and you watched as she just silently stared at you for a moment before the next thing you knew, she was crushing her lips onto yours, which made you freeze for a moment before you melted into the kiss and returned it, then you came back to your senses and gently pushed her away “Y/N-” She said, sounding a little hurt at the fact you were pushing her away “Addison… I like you, I do… But you’re just coming out of a divorce with Derek and-” “And what, Y/N? You don’t think I can make my own decisions because of that” she accused, crossing her arms as she looked at you.
You reached out and grasped her arms gently “No, that’s not what it is… I like you too much, I just don’t want to be a rebound” you admitted softly, not wanting to ruin any of this and watching as her expression softened and she gently took one of your hands in hers “You’re not a rebound… Ever since you’ve come here, I couldn’t keep my eyes off you… Do you know how hard it is to try to save your own marriage when you’re sitting there?” She asked, laughing slightly which made you feel a bit guilty since you felt like maybe it was your fault they ended “You are so far from a rebound” she said, resting her forehead against yours which made you smile as you wrapped your arms around her.
The two of you stood there for a bit, just enjoying each other's company before you heard her pager go off “Before you go” you said, grabbing her arm when she went to head off and pulling her back to you, kissing her gently “Are we hiding this?” You asked softly, wanting to know since you didn’t want to tell Calli before you knew the terms “No, no hiding” she assured, giving your hand a squeeze before she pulled away “Good luck out there, Montgomery” you said, giving her a smile which she returned “You too, Y/L/N” she said before heading out of the room, leaving you to smile to yourself before you sighed, deciding to go back to your job, feeling like you were on cloud nine as you went about your business.
Permanent Taglist: @rianncreates / @natasha-danvers / @hopingforbarnes / @xxxtwilightaxelxxx / @venablemayfairgoode / @mmmmokdok
Sandra Oh’s Sense of Purpose
The actor discusses Hollywood survival skills, winning the lottery, and her interest in telling “messy” Asian American stories.
Sandra Oh wanted to talk to me, first, about the Monterey Park shooting. The attack had taken place a week earlier, not far from her home in Los Angeles. She was still working through her feelings about it. Seeing her face fill my laptop screen over Zoom, I thought about her ability as an actor to externalize emotion with the camera up close. For our interview, Oh had set up her computer in her back yard. A fire pit, with cushions and an L-shaped seating area, was behind her. As she discussed the shooting, Oh stared at a point off to her right; her eyebrows sloped upward, and her brow furrowed. She radiated dismay.
After we discussed the tragedy for a few minutes, she asked if she could start recording the conversation. She wanted to keep a copy of it for herself. Perhaps it was her age, she told me––fifty-one years old. She had been feeling the urge to gather her thoughts and “put them all together one day.” (She told me that she’s kept journals going back to the fifth grade.) She’d been dwelling on the shooting, turning over its meaning in her head––particularly the fact that the perpetrator turned out to be an Asian immigrant himself. The reflection is, in some ways, part of her work. Last October, during a panel I moderated at The New Yorker Festival, on “identity and craft,” Oh said that in the past the characters she played hadn’t “necessarily had their history, their family, their race, their culture explored.” Now, she added, her overriding interest was in “telling Asian American stories.”
Oh is still revered by fans for her decade-long stint as Cristina Yang, the unapologetically ambitious cardiothoracic surgeon and devoted best friend on “Grey’s Anatomy.” More recently, her portrayal of the world-weary British intelligence agent Eve Polastri, in BBC America’s breakout hit “Killing Eve,” earned her a raft of awards and critical plaudits. It was during the pandemic, however, as violence against Asians surged, that Oh’s artistic choices seemed to coalesce into a sense of purpose. She was at her farcical best as Ji-Yoon Kim, the pathbreaking English-department chair at Pembroke University, in the Netflix series “The Chair,” released in 2021. Last summer, she began production of an original Hulu comedy movie with the comedian and actress Nora Lum, otherwise known as Awkwafina. Oh is now filming a miniseries adaptation of “The Sympathizer,” Viet Thanh Nguyen’s tragicomic novel on the Vietnamese refugee experience, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 2016. The project is slated for HBO, and one of its creative visionaries is the South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook.
Tumblr media
In March, 2021, Oh was in the middle of production of “The Chair,” in Pennsylvania, when a white man went on a shooting rampage in Georgia, killing eight people, six of whom were women of Asian descent. Afterward, Oh made an unexpected appearance at a “Stop Asian Hate” rally in Pittsburgh. She took the megaphone and delivered a rousing speech that culminated with her asking the crowd to join her in repeating a mantra, which could have been a credo for her Hollywood career. “I am proud to be Asian,” she said, thrusting her hand high, and then pointing it at the ground in front of her. “I belong here.”
In the span of more than two hours on a Friday last month, she spoke about identity, opportunity, winning the lottery, and why she’s no longer waiting for the “white dudes” of the industry to call.
Max Goodwin and Randall Pearson: The Well-Meaning, Incredibly Self-Centered Leading Men We’ve Grown to Love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey fam! Like I said, I’ve been writing a ton of meta lately and this is another one that’s just been sitting in my drafts. It’s basically a This Is Us and a New Amsterdam meta which is something I haven’t done before but something I want do more of. In my Game of Thrones days I used to write a lot of meta about shows and characters that had similarities so this is fun for me. I hope y’all enjoy this. ALSO THIS HAS SPOILERS FOR BOTH SHOWS!!!!!!!
Without a doubt the two most popular shows on NBC is This is Us and New Amsterdam. And what’s not to love? They’re both emotionally driven, heartfelt, shows that focus on incredibly deep and complex topics. Though one show focuses on family dynamics and the other focuses on the healthcare system, these shows are very similar in more ways than one. Case in point, Max Goodwin and Randall Pearson. The more I watch these two shows, the more I realize how these two characters are so alike!!! These two men are kind-hearted, well intentioned, individuals who genuinely want to make some sort of positive difference. They are incredibly ambitious and always have “bright ideas” and “goals” they want to accomplish and somehow they’re able to meet those goals without ever having to sacrifice their wants and needs. By every definition these men are the “main characters” or the ultimate “protagonists.” These are the folks that we are supposed to root for. At the same time, though these men have many traits to be admired, when you truly look at it both of them can be incredibly self centered and selfish especially when it pertains to their romantic partners and love interests. No matter how appealing you make these characters out to be these men clearly fall under the Behind Every Great Man trope.
The Behind Every Great Man trope has been used countless of times throughout Cinema and TV History that I’m sure that I don’t even have to explain it to you but for the sake of this meta this is how it’s defined.
“Behind Every Great Man...stands an even greater woman! Or in about a hundred variations is a Stock Phrase referring to how people rarely achieve greatness without support structures that go generally unappreciated, and said support structure is a traditionally female role via being the wife, mother, or sometimes another relation. This trope is specifically about a man who is credited with something important, but owes much of his success to the woman in his life.”
This trope usually has a negative connotation (and rightfully so) because the man who often benefits from this is an asshole and unworthy of this type of support!
For example:
Oliva and Fitz
Tumblr media
Cristina Yang and Burke
Tumblr media
Cookie and Lucious
Tumblr media
Ghost and Tasha
Tumblr media
There are countless others but these are a few of the couples that come to mind for me. Randall and Max aren’t comparable to any of these men that are listed above but they are still operating under the same trope. It just looks nicer because Max and Randall are inherently good and inspirational. They are the heroes of the story. I would even argue and say that both men fall under the Chronic Hero Syndrome trope which is defined as
“Chronic Hero Syndrome is an "affliction" of cleaner heroes where for them, every wrong within earshot must be righted, and everyone in need must be helped, preferably by Our Hero themself. While certainly admirable, this may have a few negative side-effects on the hero and those around them. Such heroes could wear themselves out in their attempts to help everyone or become distraught and blame themselves for the one time that they're unable to save the day. Spending so much time and effort saving everyone else can also put a strain on the hero's personal or dating life.”
Just because Max and Randall have these incredibly inspiring aspirations, is it fair that their wives and love interests are always expected to rise to the occasion and support them. Is it ok for their partners to continuously sacrifice their wants and needs because they love these men?
Let’s dive into it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Truth be told, Beth Pearson, Helen Sharpe and Georgia Goodwin had to endure a GREAT DEAL to emotionally support the dreams and aspirations of these men while sacrificing so much of themselves in the process. In media we often see women sacrificing so much of their wants and needs out of love for these male leads and rarely do men do the same thing for their romantic partners and love interests. All three of these women clearly fall under the Act of True Love trope defined as
“The Act of True Love proves beyond doubt that you are ready to put your loved one's interests before your own, that you are truly loyal and devoted to them. Usually this involves a sacrifice on your part, at the very least a considerable effort and/or a great risk. The action must be motivated, not by morals or principle or expectation of future reward, but by sheer personal affection.When your beloved is in dire need of your help, or in great danger, and you do something, at great expense to yourself, for the sake of their safety, their welfare, or their happiness, thus proving beyond any doubt that you put their interest ahead of yours.”
Over the past few seasons we have seen all three of these women truly live up to this trope without any true consequences or accountability from the men they’re making all these sacrifices for. For example, in Beth and Randall’s marriage, how many times did Randall spring an idea on Beth without truly talking to her or considering her wants first? Everyone thinks these two are an ideal couple but she has endured A LOT for Randall.
Randall has spontaneously quit his job, moved his dying biological dad into their home, bought his biological dad’s old apartment building, fostered and adopted a child and also ran for city councilman outside of his district. In all of these decisions, Randall “consulted” Beth about it but at the same time didn’t really consult her. In a way there has always been this expectation of Beth to just go along for the ride with what Randall wants. Is anyone else exhausted from reading that list?! That’s a lot for partner to endure and lovingly support. But Beth has endured and has been Randall’s rock through it all!!! What worries me is that the one time Beth spoke out about her wants and needs of pursuing dance again, he couldn’t match the same energy she was giving him and eventually it led to world war three between them. Though things are looking up in their relationship  and he’s starting to support her more, has Randall nearly given to Beth as much as she’s given to him? Absolutely not!
Similar to Randall, Max also had a wife who was a dancer. in fact, she was a prima ballerina. Unlike Randall and Beth, Max relationship with Georgia was rocky from the start. When we were first introduced to them Max and Georgia were separated and rightfully so. Georgia was never Max’s first priority. The hospital always came first in their relationship. He couldn’t even dedicate a full night to her for their proposal. In order to “save” their marriage they decide to have a baby and they both committed to taking a step back in their careers in order to do so. The problem was Max didn’t keep his side of their commitment and took a job to become the medical director at the biggest public hospital in the U.S. She gave up her career to start a family and he totally and completely betrayed her trust. So throughout season one we see them trying to rebuild their marriage but even in the midst of trying to rebuild a marriage based on trust and mutual respect Max still keeps things from Georgia. For several episodes he didn’t tell her that he had advance stages of throat cancer. He only told her when Georgia asked him to move back home. That’s fucked up! Then throughout their pregnancy he was never fully there for Georgia because he was either to preoccupied with the hospital or himself. At the end of it all, Georgia died tragically at the beginning of season two and really had nothing to show for it in her relationship with Max other than her daughter Luna.
Now let’s bring Helen Sharpe into the fold. While all of this stuff was going on with Max and his wife in season one, Max was developing a deep friendship, borderline emotional affair with Helen. Their relationship started out with Helen being his oncologist. As the new Medical Director of New Amsterdam, he swore Helen to secrecy about his diagnosis so that he could still run the hospital. Through that secrecy they eventually formed a deep bond but as his cancer got worse his secret was let out of the bag. He realistically needed someone to step up and run the hospital when he was going through chemo and though Helen already had commitments she stepped up and became his deputy medical director. Somewhere along the lines Max and Helen started developing feelings for each other. As Helen becomes aware of those feelings, she made a choice and decides to remove herself as Max’s doctor. He BITCHES about it but eventually accepts the boundary she’s clearly trying to set. Mind you, as this is unfolding, like Max, Helen is also in a new relationship with her boyfriend Panthaki. As Max’s cancer seems to be getting worse with his new doctor, she goes back on her boundary and decides to be his doctor again. This pisses her boyfriend off because he could already peep the vibe between them and he breaks up with her. When we get into season two, Max’s wife died and Helen set him up in a clinical trail (with a doctor she previously fired) that’s helping his cancer.  Unbeknownst to Max, this doctor ends up holding his life saving treatment plan over Helen’s head and in order for his treatment to continue she gives this doctor half of her department!
Helen has sacrificed a lot for Max and now in season three she’s finally prioritizing her current wants and needs first! Like Randall, Max is starting to turn a page and is starting to support Helen and truly listen to the wants and needs that she has. All of this is good but my question is did any of these women have to sacrifice so much for the men in their lives to get a clue?
Why is it that this is a trope we see in media time and time and time again? Even if these men are good, why don’t we still keep these male characters accountable when they put their significant others in these situations that are clearly not fair? I’ve watched countless tv shows and I’ve seen a lot of tv couples but I think I have only come across one couple where the male counterpart has selflessly loved his significant other and has always put her needs above his own.
That character my friend is none other than PACEY WITTER
Tumblr media
I might be mistaken but I think Joey and Pacey are the most popular ship in tv history and honestly, rightfully so! This is only example I can think of where the male in the relationship so willingly puts the wants and needs of his partner first. It is a completely selfless and sacrificial love. He never wants to hold her back and he never asks her to compromise her wants or needs for him. That’s why I think so many women love Pacey because in a sea of TV relationships, Pacey Witter is a fucking unicorn.
So to wrap this up does this mean that I hate Randall Pearson or Max Goodwin? No! I adore them. I love both of their characters so much. I just think that when we see the media continuously play out the sacrificial wife/love interest for the sake of their male counterparts, it should be called out. I’m all about sacrificial and selfless love but it should come from both sides.❤️❤️❤️
Anyway I hope y’all enjoy this! As always my DMs are opening here or on Twitter @oyindaodewale
It was early in the morning, still before sunrise as the sky outside was dark and only now beginning to lighten as the sun started to show over the horizon of the water. The interns had just arrived at the hospital and were getting ready to start their morning pre-rounds. They hadn't received their assignments for the day yet and Meredith found herself hoping she would be returned to OB again. It was over a week now since she had last been on Addison's service and she had found herself starting to miss the attendings company. She simply no longer had the same passion for learning if Addison wasn't the one teaching her. It was different with her, and now she was beginning to understand why.
Just as Meredith finished changing into her light blue scrubs the door to the changing room swung open and Bailey walked inside. She didn't even have to say a word for the interns to start gathering around her for their assignments. Meredith closed her locker door and moved over to join the back of the group.
"Alright everybody shut up and listen up. I have your assignments for the day but I have just gotten off of a 36-hour shift, 18 hours of which I spent in the O.R. that means I have no energy left for your complaints. So if you have a problem with your assignment please don't moan to me about it, take it up with the chief." Bailey stated bluntly, the exhaustion was obvious in her voice as she spoke. Everyone fell silent and listened for their name to be called. "Okay, O'Malley you're with Shepherd, Karev Torres, Yang Burke, Grey Montgomery, Stevens Sloan."
"Oh seriously!" The start of Izzie's sharp protest cut through the silence but all it took was one stern look from Bailey and she fell silent, the rest of her complaint about her assignment dying in her throat.
"Alright disperse! I want to get home and out of these scrubs." Bailey grumbled with a dismissive wave of her hand towards the interns before she turned and walked back out of the room.
"I can't believe I'm stuck picking up Sloan's damn coffee again for a day." Izzie sighed, roughly tugging on her white coat and heading out the door after Bailey. The rest of the group followed behind her and headed out into the hall, walking towards the elevators together before they had to go their separate ways.
"I checked the O.R. board already so looks like I'm in a triple coronary bypass later today. I'll be thinking of you Iz." Cristina bragged, the cockiness lacing her voice as she shoved her hands into her pockets.
"Oh, lucky you," Izzie said, her tone dripping with sarcasm as she rolled her eyes at Cristina. Cristina simply stuck her tongue out in response knowing Izzie was just frustrated with being stuck with Sloan.
"Enjoy being stuck with She-Shepherd again Mer." Alex chuckled, slightly jabbing at Meredith's side. "It's like they want to torture you at this point. I mean, you request to be on her service just to dodge Shepherd a couple of times and they think you're in love with her."
Meredith felt her heart leap in her chest at that but she did her best to control her features and not react to Alex's comment. Still, she didn't miss the sidewards look Cristina shot at her over her shoulder. Cristina was the only one who knew the truth, she couldn't bring herself to tell any of the others about her feelings and she had absolutely no intention of doing so anytime soon. After all, how would she even tell? What would she tell them? She couldn't tell anyone else when she barely even knew what exactly her feelings were when it came to Addison. The word "love" might have been blurted out when she had started to explain it all to Cristina but that word scared her. It especially scared her when it came to Addison. But as per usual she was avoiding the subject altogether by hiding her head in the metaphorical sand - surgeries and tequila - in the hopes that it would all go away. After all, ignorance is bliss. It seemed to be working, for a while at least.
"Meredith! It's good to see you. You were missed last week." Addison's voice caught Meredith's attention and pulled her from her thoughts as she approached the nurse's station. Addison was standing there waiting for her with a bright smile on her face. Meredith couldn't help but smile back at her, there was just something about  Addison's genuine happiness at having her back that warmed her heart. "While doctor Yang is a very gifted surgeon, I got the impression she wasn't very happy with her stay in OB/GYN."
"It's good to be back doctor Montgomery, I've missed this too. And yes you're right, Cristina has her heart set on Cardiotherasics and she's never pleased if she's not in heart surgery." Meredith chuckled as she remembered all of Cristina's complaining the previous week. Meredith on the other hand had been desperate to get back.
Addison stood up straight then, pulling herself away from the desk she had previously been leaning against and instead reached over it to lift the stack of patient charts into her arms. She checked through them briefly and once she was confident she was ready she gestured for Meredith to follow her as she started down the corridor.
"She'll be well suited there, Bailey's lucky she really got a good bunch of interns with you lot. You all have more potential than I've seen in years. Especially you." Addison slowed down then and met Meredith's eyes as she said it, making sure she knew she meant what she was saying.
"Thank you." Meredith smiled at Addison's compliment. She had been told many times since she arrived at Seattle Grace that she was full of potential but mostly it was at least in some way connected to the legacy of her mother so to her it from Addison truly was a compliment. When it came from Addison she knew it was about her abilities and not what she could have if she was just a little bit more like Ellis.
"Anyway." Addison cleared her throat and shook her head slightly as if she had unintentionally let down her guard and was quickly trying to cover the traces of vulnerability she'd shown. The previously warm tone gave way to her more commanding attending attitude and she started to list out everything Meredith would need to know for the day. "It's going to be a busy first day back for you Grey, the floor is rather full this week. Ms Mills is currently at four centimetres and will need to be checked on hourly, I want to be paged once it's time to deliver and Mrs Morgan is being monitored as she's at risk for premature labour so I will need you to run labs. As well we admitted Mrs Graham last night and she possibly has preeclampsia so she will need a set of labs by the end of the day, the sooner the better really. Plus I have a c-section at three that I'm certain you'll probably want to scrub in on."
Addison started to walk down the hall again as she spoke but it only took her a couple of steps to realise Meredith wasn't following her. When she glanced over her shoulder she saw that Meredith was frantically scribbling down her instructions in a notebook, clearly not having noticed that Addison was moving again. She stopped walking and gave the intern a moment to catch up with the few strides she had taken, giving her a warm smile she finally looked up from her book and met her gaze again.
"More work than you remember doctor Grey?" She teased, cocking an eyebrow at Meredith.
"Nothing I can't handle." Meredith grinned sliding her notebook back into the pocket of her lab coat, instead turning her attention back to Addison.
"I'm confident that you'd be well able for any work I throw at you." There was something so genuine about Addison's words that Meredith found herself affected by a compliment from the attending for a second time that morning. She diverted her gaze to the ground in an attempt to mask the blush she was certain was spreading up her neck and across her face.
"You know," Addison started with a slight chuckle. "Holiday's tend to always be a busy time for surgeons. We see our highest rates of surgeries and transplants around New Years, Christmas, the fourth of July, caused by too much alcohol and just stupid accidents really but it's not so much the case in OB/GYN. We do have a couple of times a year where our numbers increase though, do you know what time of year it is now?"
"November?" Meredith mentally slapped herself for her answer. She was sure Addison wasn't asking her for simply what month it was but she had just blurted out the words before she had the chance to really think about what she was saying. It only happened to her with Addison, normally she was composed and cautious but with Addison, she was an awkward mess and she couldn't help it.
"Well yes, but more accurately welcome to the OB floor nine months after Valentine's Day."
Meredith snorted at the comment, finally putting two and two together. Addison had never joked like this with her before and Meredith hoped that it was a sign they were finally getting closer, becoming friends. She didn't miss the way Addison turned away, trying to hide the smile on her face when she saw that Meredith had reacted well. She wanted this friendship just as much as Meredith.
"Right well." Addison turned to face her again, tucking a stray strand of hair back behind her ear as she spoke. Meredith could have sworn there was something in her voice, almost a sense of disappointment. "I'm afraid I'm going to have to leave you now, I have a meeting. Try not to run the place into the ground while I'm gone."
With that Addison gave her a warm smile, gently placing her hand on her arm. The contact sent a spark through Meredith's body and when she looked up to meet her gaze she hoped she felt the same way. Addison moved her hand then and turned, disappearing down the hall towards the elevators. Meredith was left alone, standing in the middle of the hall. It took her a moment to move away and finally start her rounds.
~~~
Meredith had finally finished all the work Addison set out for her for the morning and decided to head down to the canteen for lunch. It was perfect timing as she spotted the rest of the group already settled around a table in the corner of the room. The canteen was quiet and it only took her a minute to grab some quick food and join everyone else at the table, taking a seat next to Cristina. Izzie was ranting about her day as she sat down but her eyes lit up when she saw Meredith and she abandoned what she had previously been talking about.
"Oh, Meredith! I had an idea earlier and I wanted to run it by you first and obviously, you can say no but I just thought it would be a fun idea." Izzie perked up as soon as Meredith took her seat, clearly excited about whatever this idea of hers was. "I think we should have a party at the house. You know just to boost morale a little and to give us a way to wind a little."
"Sounds like a good idea, I'm down." Alex nodded seemingly placing his vote with Izzie as he stabbed his fork into another piece of food.
"I could use a reason to drink right now." Cristina agreed, sipping on her coffee as she absentmindedly nodded.
"Since when do you need a reason to drink?" George asked giving Cristina a confused and only slightly judgemental look. He let out a sharp gasp and quickly fell silent as Cristina kicked him under the table.
With everyone else on board with the idea, all eyes turned to Meredith as she was the only member of the group yet to comment, and one they needed on board to go ahead with the plan. Normally she hated the idea of a house full of loud, drunk people she could barely stand on a good day. Especially when it was at her own house and she couldn't simply up and leave whenever she wanted but now for some reason, she liked the idea of a party. Maybe it was that much like Cristina she needed a reason to get drunk and distract herself from her feelings.
"Sure." She said raising her hands in defeat to the watching eyes of the group. "Okay, why not."
"Oh great!" Izzie clapped her hands in excitement. She immediately launched into a rant of ideas, grabbing a napkin and a pen out of her pocket to jot down the most important ones. "It's my idea so I won't place the responsibility of planning on you, I can handle all of that. Who do we want to invite? I mean the other interns right? And maybe the nurses? But no attendings, I don't want to deal with Sloan."
"You know if you don't invite him he's still just going to show up with a nurse right?" Alex said casually. He was right, there was no way they could have a party without at least one attending showing up and it would more than likely be Mark.
"Either way, I don't think we should give them a direct invite, besides I'm sure Mer doesn't want Derek there."
Izzie was right about that part, Meredith dreaded the thought of him showing up. The last person she wanted to deal with at a party was Derek Shepherd but she did want one certain, red-headed attending at the party. It occurred to her then that Addison had never actually been to her house. She zoned out and let everyone else around her continue to start the plans for the party while she got lost in her thoughts of all the possibilities if Addison did show up at that party. She shouldn't let herself get her hopes up, she knew that. She was only setting herself up for disappointment but even with only a slim chance that Addison would show up her heart was already racing.

Chapter 7
Tumblr media
Previous chapter | Next chapter
As someone who didn’t need much sleep to get through the day, Amory Madden shouldn’t be heavily affected by a restless night. However, one thing was when she was tired from work, that wasn’t a problem. however, being kept up at night because of the very loud sex her friend was having. Knowing it was with their boss, and in the room next to hers. That, she didn’t enjoy.
She ate her usual breakfast, toast, and a coffee mug, as Izzie stood beside her in the kitchen and George came down the stairs.
“You get any sleep?” The boy asked.
“She could oil the bedsprings as a courtesy, or at least buy a padded headboard.” The tall blonde answered.
If only they knew, thought the small girl.
“So, who’s the guy?” George asked and Amory choked on her last piece of buttered toast, going into a coughing fit.
“You think it was just one guy doing all that work?” Izzie questioned as the short blonde got up to put her plate in the sink.
“Can we just stop talking about it? It’s bad enough already that she kept us awake the whole night.” Amory asked and the boy nodded along.
“At least she’ll be having a long day at work,” Izzie said.
As they heard a door creek, the two interns ran to see who had spent the night, while Amory just stayed back and watched with slightly panicked eyes.
Once they realized it was Derek, Izzie commented. “Well, at least we know brain surgery isn’t his only skill.”
“They can’t be… h’s her boss!’ The boy’s voice squeaked.
“He’s all of our bosses.” The tall blonde answered. “Why are you so quiet?” She continued while looking Amory right in the eyes.
“I might or might not have known before…” She began to speak hesitantly as she rushed to fill her mouth with the rest of her coffee.
“You what?... You, you knew?!” George asked, shocked. “ And you didn’t tell me… us. You didn’t tell us.”
“I’m sorry, but it wasn’t my secret to share.” She apologized and grabbed the boy by the arm as they turn to leave.
“She had been scrubbing in a lot lately on his surgeries.” Izzie starts, but with Amory’s glare she stopped herself from continuing. “Okay, I’ll shut up. But if she’s not then why is she keeping it a secret?”
“Amory knew…” The male intern argued.
“Just because I figured it out on my own. She didn’t tell me.” The short girl came to her defense.
Just then, Meredith came into the kitchen and grabbed herself a cup of coffee. “Good morning.”
“Morning. It sounded like you were having pretty radical sex last night, all night long. Who was the guy?” Izzie teases, and another glare from the younger blonde shot in her direction.
“No one you know.”
As Amory tried to inform her friend of the group’s discovery, the tall model grabbed her arm to silence her. “We’re late, let’s go.”
~~~~~~
“Yikes, wouldn’t want to meet you in a dark alley.” Meredith commented as the group got out of the car to find Cristina by her motorcycle.
“Right back at you.”
Alex then came by the group, jogging.
“A run? You run?” Izzie asked, surprised.
“Everyday, babe, everyday.” He answered.
“Not suffering enough?” The dirty blonde asked sarcastically.
“What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger.” The boy explained.
“Masochist.” The shorter girl said, Alex rolled his eyes at her, as she walked beside George.
“Don’t go acting all indefatigable. You’re dragging like the rest of us.” Cristina accused.
“Oh, what is that? Professional weakness, Dr. Yang?” He teased the woman en her runny nose.
“It’s called the flu!.” She exclaimed
~~~~~~
Now in an exam room, George and Amory examined a toddler with a leg twitch.
“Hi there, Jamie! I’m Amory and this is Geoge. How about you show me your mouth, like you’re a lion?” The female intern suggested, after having introduced herself to the parents. “Aaahhh, just like that.”
As she examined the girl’s throat, her friend talked to the parent, often looking et her to eppraciate her kindness with the child. “And you noticed her foot twitching?”
“My foot!” The little girl babbled and Amory grabbed her foot in a playful way, making her giggle.
“About three months ago?” The boy continued.
“Just a little. We took her to the county hospital, and she got the CT scan, which showed her…” The mother explained.
“Brain abnormality.” The blonde girl completed as she played with the toddler and her flashlight.
“And the twitching has gotten worse?” George aksed the parents, taking notes on his chart.
“A lot worse. They don’t have the proper equipment back home to figure out what’s wrong.” Her father explained; Amory allowing the small girl to look into her mouth with her flashlight.
“You did a  good thing by bringing her here, Mr. and Mrs. Hayes.” The girl assured the couple, still playing with the child, now showing her how to turn the tool.
“Show mommy!” The blonde toddler babbled, making both interns smile in endearment.
“You sit tight, Jamie, okay? We’re going to bring you Dr. Shepherd.” George told her. “He’s the brain specialist.”
As the doctors approached the door, they were called by the mother. “Doctor? Is he good, this Dr. Shepherd?”
“At just about everything…” The male intern mumbled as he laft, a somewhat hurt expression on his face.
“He’s one of the best doctors here, you’re in good hands.” Amory assured them. “Bye, Jamie!”
“Bye, Ams!” The little girl said, clearly smitten with the blonde woman.
~~~~~~
In a scrub room, Amory and George were getting their patient’s CTs, as they watched Shepherd’s surgery. An anaesthesiologist came in, walking past them.
“Excuse me.” He asked.
“Sorry, Dr. Taylor.” The duo said in unison.
At the smell of alcohol, they stared at each other.
“That would be bourbon.” Their colleague informed them, seemingly calm, terror creeping up in the small girl’s eyes.
“What?” George asked, hoping that he misunderstood what was said.
“I smelled it too. And he’s the best anaesthesiologist on the staff. I’ll worry when he’s too juiced to do his crossword puzzle.”
As the attending leaves the OR, the duo approached him. “Dr. Shepherd…” The boy informed him.
“I got to get some coffee.” The older man complained.
“Jamie Hayes has been admitted, the girl with the brain abnormality.”
“How’s she presenting?”
“She has what looks like continuous seizure activity in her left foot. Her balance is off. Her parents have come a long way to try to find out what’s wrong with her.” Amory told him this time, handing him the CTs. “These are three months old, I assumed you’d need new ones but you might like to see what we have for now.”
The attending stared at her, surprised at he perspicacity, nodding. “Exactly, her brein could look dramatically different today.”
“I was also wondering if I could talk to you first, Dr. Shepherd?” The girl asked, wanting to inform him on what she’d smelled.
“Okay, O’Malley can order them, come with me.” As they got into the elevator, leaving George behind, the girl started talking.
“I hope this doesn’t coma across as impertinent, but I’ve found out something that has me worried about the well-being of our patient.” The attending looked down at her, his brows slightly furrowed in curiosity. “I wouldn’t want to report a colleague, but I think Dr. Taylor has been drinking alcohol. As he came into the OR, I couldn’t help but notice the scent… I wans’t sure shat to do, but I wasn’t the only one who noticed, so I thought maybe you could see what can be done.” The girl proposed.
“I’ll look into it, Amory. You did the right thing by reporting it.” The attending said, reassuring the girl.
~~~~~~
Now examining Jamie with Dr. Shepherd, Amory helps out as George stands off to the side.
“You look like a princess. Do you know you’re a princess?” The older doctor joked.
“Yes she does, she’s princess Jamie, aren’t you?” The young intern said, bopping the child’s nose and making her giggle.
“And you, princess Amy.”
The intern made a surprised face. “I’m a princess too?” She said, keeping the girl distracted as the neurosurgeon examined her.
“We’re gonna find what’s causing the seizures. Does MRI know we’re coming down?”
“You said CT.” George spat out, somewhat angry.
“Now I’m saying MRI.”
“It’s available.” The blonde internd informed, as she let the small girl play with her hair.
“Doctor, is she fonna need surgery?” Her dad asked, worry in his voice. “It’s just that my wide and I, we both work, and I don’t know if our insurance… we know it can be very expensive.”
“I don’t want you to worry about that.” Derek answers them.
“How about we send someone to help you figure it out?” The girl suggested, relief showing in the parent’s expressions. Just then, Jamie’s leg started shaking violently.
“It’s focal left side seizure.” The attending told them. “Let’s get that diazepam running right now, please, I need a tourniquet.”
As the attending placed it on the toddler’s arm, Amory stepped up to tranquilize her. “Jamie, look, we’re gonna put this super cool princess bracelet on your arm okay?” The baby’s eyes when wide with excitement. “Now Doctor Shepherd is going to put this butterfly in your arm to be your friend, how about that?” She suggested; with a smile, the girl charmed by the woman in front of her. Just then, her little leg stopped shaking.
“Hey, do you like spaceships?” The attending asked her, and the girl nodded vigorously. “Should we take Captain O’Malley and Spece Princess Amy to the spaceship MRI? Let’s go.”
~~~~~~
“It’s called Rasmussin’s Encephalitis.” Derek explained to the girl’s parents, showing them her MRI. “What it amounts to is that htis side of the brain, this part’s all healthy, it’s working perfect. This black part of the brain, all of that is dead or dying.” Amory was standing next to George, listening intently. “The condition has gotten radically worse since her CT scan three months ago. Left untreated, the disease is gonna kill her.”
“How soon?” Her mother questioned.
“Too soon.” Amory said, compassion infilled voice.
“So, is there a cure?”
‘The treatment requires the diseases portion of her brain be removed and sealed off. See, eventually, the spinal fluid will fill the cavity.”
“Remove? But thats…” Her father stuttered.
“Half her brain, yes.” Amory confirmed. “Her age makes it possible.”
“Indeed, her brain is not yet fully developed, so the remaining neutrons will compensate for the loss.” The attending explained. Just then, the girl was wheeled out of the MRI room, and her mother ran to her.
“So, she will be normal?” The father asked.
“There are risks to any surgery, and this is a major one. But, if we’re successful, Jamie could walk out of this hospital in a couple of weeks, go on to live a relatively normal live.” Amory told them with a soft smile before they made their way out of the room.
“Dr. O’Malley? Dr. Madden?” The attending called out.
“What?” The boy asked, clearly frustrated.
“I’m sorry to bother you, but if the parents consent, I thought you’d like to scrub in on the hemispherectomy, along with Dr. Madden. Are you in or not?”
“In” The boy answered and walked away.
“Dr. Madden, I must say, I’m impressed with how well you handled both the child and the parents. You kept Jamie distracted and calm, while you reassured the couple, not hiding the truth. Good work!” The attending gave her a smile and walked away, leaving a blushed and happy Amory behind.
~~~~~~
Getting out of the elevator, Amory holding George’s arm, the boy called for Cristina.
“Yang! We’re scrubbing in on a hemispherectomy with Shepherd.”
“Get out! I would kill for that.” The Asian woman let out and the short girl took a pack of cookies out of the vending machine.
“I know! We’re gonna cut out the half of a girl’s brain.” Amory told her, excited, putting a cookie in her mouth.
“And it’s going to work.” A marveled George let out. “It’s outrageous, almost makes it hard to hate him.”
Amory hit his arm and Cristina asked him “Why do you hate him?”
“He knows about him and Meredith,” Amory told her, between bites of her food.
“You know?!” The boy asked, shocked, betrayal in his eyes. “You both knew?!”
“When are you going to figure out we know everything,” Cristina told him, as Izzie came up the stairs.
“She knows too!” The boy turned to the tall blonde.
“What, about Doctor-cest?”
“It’s been going on for like, ever.” She simply said.
“And neither of you could have told us?” George yelped.
“You’re a gossip, huh?” The curly-haired woman accused.
“As I said earlier, it’s not my secret to tell,” Amory explained once again, repeating what she’d said that morning, shrugging her shoulders.
“He’s about to go into major brain surgery on no sleep? Not very responsible.” George commented.
“Better than drunk. I told Shepherd about Taylor, by the way.” Amory informed the boy, the other two oblivious to what they were discussing.
“Sex all night isn’t about being responsible.” The curly-haired woman shrugged it off.
“No, it’s about sex all night. I can’t believe you’re not more pissed off about this. You of all people.” Izzie accused, making the short blonde’s eyes widen and making her choke on her cookies.
“Well, she works all day. She’s got a  hard job. Why should you care how she unwinds? Imean, you bake all night, Amory reads medical issues, some people like to drink… others mike the occasional screaming orgasm.” Cristina explained, Alex joining the conversation.
“Yeah, we do.” He stuffed his mouth with a donut, making everyone turn to look at him. “Forget I said that. Pretend that I’m not here, continue.”
“Alex, I don’t need to see what you’re eating in your mouth, please chew with your mouth closed, thank you very much,” Amory said, nose scrunched in disgust.
“You look like you need to be spoon-fed.” The boy teased the sick girl.
“You look like Alex.” She deadpanned.
“You really should go home. You look sicker every time I see you. I can make you some soup later, to make you feel better. If you want to of course.” The small blonde suggested, Cristina, giving her a thankful look.
“Weren’t we talking about sex, anyway?” The boy who was eating the donus asked, making the other interns leave.
~~~~~~
“I appreciate this,” George said, as he, Amory and Derek scrubbed into their surgery. “The chance to scrub in on this kind of procedure is, well… I appreciate it.”
“We both do.” Amory flashed him a smile. As she noticed the anaesthesiologist from earlier go into the OR, she worried slightly but hoped that Derek would take care of the situation.
A nurse gets Dr. Shepherd a coffee and thanks her, making Dr. Taylor comment about George and Amory. “Ah, coffee: where would medicine be without it, huh?” The alcohol-filled breath hit the boy and the face and he stepped back, the girl scrunching her nose up in disgust.
“I hope you have a new crossword, Taylor. We’re gonna be here awhile.” Shepherd commented.
Amory walked toward the little girl and explained to her what was going to happen. “Hi, princess Jamie, You are going to take a really nice nap now, and when you wake up you’re going to be with mommy and daddy, okay?”
“Okay, princess Amy.”
“I just need you to breathe into these blow bubble for me.” The intern instructed the little girl.
“I”m sorry, Dr. Taylor, but did you just… have you been drinking?” George let out, everyone looking at him shocke, the toddler already in a deep sleep.
“I beg you pardon?” The anaesthesiologist seemes offended.
“Do you smell…” He wanted to ask Amory before deciding against is. “I, I smel alcohol.”
“Where the hell do youtube off accusing me of something like that?” The saml blonde watched the whole interaction with wide eyes.
“George, you’re out of line.” The attending stepped in.
“There are rules. You know, there are rules for a reason.” George exclaimed, Amory unsure of how to react.
Reaching the conclusion that she has to stand up for her patient, for what she thinks is right, despite the consequences, she pointed out. “Dr. Shepherd, this is said with my biggest respect I could have, but we have a two-year-old girl on this table. There are parents out there believing this is the best team to save their kid. I can’t just stand back and watch this happen when I warned you before of this.” She looked up at the older surgeon, silently pleading him with her eyes.
“I don’t need some punk interns telling me what’s at stake here.” Dr. Taylor scoffed. “Get him out of here. The girl wouldn’t have said a word if it wasn’t for the other intern in here.” A moment of selence followed, as Derek seemed to weight his options. “Shep?”
“You’re out, George.”
The intern left the room, revolted at what had just happened, as a compassionate gaze from Amory followed her friend, sighing.
“Alright, we’re gonna start the procedure with the left temporal lobectomy.” The attending informed the OR staff. “After the temporal, we’ll do the frontal, and then the occipital.”
“Amory’s blood boiled, seeing George who was now watching from the gallery, yet she knew it’d do no good to complain about it.
~~~~~~
Now into the surgery, Derek explained once again. “From the frontal lobectomy, I’m going to encounter a, uh…”
“We’ll encounter the anterior cerebral artery.” Amory pointed out.
“Yeah, so we’re gonna need to…”
As she noticed the toddler’s etes fluttering slightly, the blonde intern calls out. “Dr. Shepherd? Her eyes…”
As the attending looked down, he realised what the girl meant. “You know, Taylor, her anesthesia’s awful light.” The toddler moved once more and Derek calls him out again. “Come one, Taylor, she’s waking up.”
Amory went near the man, calling his name. “Dr. Taylor?” She looks down at the doctor, head hanging slightly and eyes shut. “He’s asleep! Doctor Taylor!” She yelled his name once again.
“Huh?” The anaesthesiologist woke up with a jump. “Oh god, sorry. Sorry. I’m on it. My bad, Shep.”
“He was right, wasn’t he…?” The attending lowered his voice, clearly angry.
“Oh, come on, I nodded off…” The other doctor kept making excuses for himself.
“Whatever we’ve got to do to get through the day, right?” The surgeon asked, irony dripping from his tone.
“I’ll be fine, it won’t happen again.”
“Yeah, not in here, it won’t. Uh, Steph, call Dr. Pennington. Hopkins, take over until she gets here. Get out of here and get it together.” The attending commanded, making Amory smile a little under her mask.
Later, they had almost finished the surgery. “This packing, we hope, will prevent haemorrhaging. Doctor Madden, do you want to add something to that?” Derek asked.
“It should allow the cerebral spinal fluid to eventually fill the cavity.” The girl answers.
“Exatly, E.T., you wanna close up? I’m gonna go to bed.” He started taking off his gown, the girl following with and expression of awe on her face.
“That… that was unreal.” She commented.
“I was tired before I came her, now I’m tired again. It’s back to reality.” He signalled for George to meet him outside the OR, Amory followed shortly after him.
~~~~~~
In the hallway, Derek spoke to the boy, as both interns stood against a wall. “Let me explain. There is a code amongst doctors, we’re not supposed to ask each other questions, not within the walls of this hospital.”
“That’s why I warned you before, Dr. Shepherd, I was hoping to avoid what was bound to happen, but whe George spoke up, I couldn’t withhold…” The blonde shifted slightly as she talked but was shortly after interrupted by her friend.
“Okay, I was out of line.” He started to walk away before the attending spoke up again.
“No, you weren’t, I was. I was out of line. Someone should have taken responsibility, and it should have been the guy doing the cutting, it should have been me. I should have listend to Madden earlier and then you in the OR.” He put his hand out for the male intern to shake it, which, after a moment of hesitation, he accepted. “You saw me leave the house this morning, didn’t you?” He now spoke to George only.
“Oh, that was you?” The intern tried to pretend.
“Im not using her and I don’t favor her.”
“She’s pretty great, you know.”
“Let’s go tell Jamie’s parents she’s gonna be fine. You go ahead, I’ll catch up with you.” He told him, now turning to the girl that still stood against the wall.
“You knew already, didn’t you?” He asked. “Did she tell you?”
“I’ve known it from the start.” Seeing the surgeon’s surprised face she simply explained. “You aren’t as discreet as you think you are with the looks.” She laughed a little, nodding her head slightly.
“I have to tell you, Amory, you did a really good job. I’m impressed with how well you reacted to everything. you were perfect with Jamie and still managed to answer the questions her parents had and could keep them calm. You understood what it was like to see medicine from a child’s eyes, But above that, you stood up for that girl, and her parents, in the OR, personal costs aside.” Amory muttered a thank you under her breath and blushed slightly. “So, as much as I would like to have you follow neuro, I think you’d do an even better job in pediatric surgery. I see a bright future for you there, should you choose to follow it. Think about it.” The attending gave her a smile and walked away leaving a smiling Amory behind.
~~~~~~
While Amory had been in surgery, Izzie has apparently gone off on Meredith because of her affair with Derek. Now, she was in the kitchen, keeping Izzie company as she made a chocolate cake.
“I thought you’d be asleep by now.” Meredith came in.
“Yeah, well, I’m not and neither is she.” Izzie pointed to Amory. “If you wait a few minutes, you can have a pieve of cake. Baked if chock-full of love… actually, chock-gull of unrelenting, all consuming rage and hostility, but it’s still tasty.”
“So, you know?” The dirty blonde inquired.
“They both saw him leave this morning.” Amory explained. “Though I don’t really know how thay didn’t notice it sooner…” She tilted her head, as if struggling to come up with an answer.
“We can’t all skip a year and still be the smartest in the room, Amory.” Meredith told her with a smile, hopping onto the countertop. “Well, do you want the lond, sordid version, or the short verion where I started with sleeping with a guy who turned out to be my boss?”
“Neither.” The tall blonde said.
“Izzie, cut me some slack here.”
“No. you went to Dartmouth. Your mother is Ellis Grey. You grew up… look at this house!” She told them, frustrated. “You know, you walk into the OR and there isn’t anyone who doubts that you should be there. I grew up in a trailer park. I went to state school. I put myself through Med School posing in my underwear. You know, I walk into the OR and everyone hopes I’m the nurse… You, Meredith, have their respect without ever trying, and you’re throwing it away for… what? A few good surgeries?”
“It’s not about the surgeries…” The small blonde whispered, knowing how smitten her friend already was.
“Then what? A little hot sex, you’re willing to ruin your credibility over that?” The tall blonde questioned. “I mean, what the hell are you doing?”
“She like him.” Amory said in a sing-song manner, and Izzie looked at the girl in question as if to check the credibility of the affirmation.
“Oh my god! You are falling for him.”
“I am not. Stop, both of you.”
“Oh, you so are.” The two blondes let out at the same time.
“No, I’m not.”
“Mer, I know everything, just admit it already.” The young intern told her, cuttin herself a piece of cake.
“You know, it’s just that he’s just so… and I’m just… I’m having a hard time.”
“Wow, you’re all mushy and warm and… full of secret feelings.” Izzie commented, passing the dirty blonde a slice of cake as Amory already attacked her own.
“They’re not secret if I know about them.” Amory smiled. “Ah, I like knowing things.” The three of them laughed, Meredith now also eating her cake.
“I hate you both! And your cake!”
“My cake is so good. So, um, how hot is the sex?” Izzie questioned.
“Izzie.” Meredith said, clearly not wanting to talk about it.
“What? Come one, we’re not getting any. Help a girl out with a few detailt!” She pleaded.
Amory didn’t know she had feelings for anyone, she isn’t one to fall in love quickly. And somehow, George was the person that came to her mind at that moment.
