Next up are triangle cowls, shawlettes, (cowlettes?) or as I'm toying with a special name for them for my store, hedgecowls/hedge cowls:

These are all just single-skein projects made with various wool and dyed by indie-dyers. Some of them are dk, some are worsted, and some are heavier than that—two of these pictured (the grey/multi-colored one and the brown & blueish one) are OOAK skeins that were both handspun and hand dyed by indie spinners/dyers. All are patterns and variants of my own design, and they are super quick projects—I finished all of these in a binge over a few days in the winter.
All will be for sale (eventually) and are quite stylish:

(This one is botanically dyed wool, my own pattern design (also featured here and here) and a gift to a friend)

As last year’s project was 22 in ‘22, this year’s is, apparently, going to be Twenty Twen-Teeth.
To wit: my luxury bones are borked. I have a 100% overbite, which is wearing my front teeth, top and bottom, down. They’re already several millimeters shorter than they used to be. This can be fixed! With braces!
…which is going to run me $6.5k.
🤦🏼‍♀️
Sooooo I am going to be pulling out various completed projects to sell, as well as making new ones for the same purpose. I figure if I sell a hundred things at $65 I’m golden. Or 65 things at $100.
Which means I’m setting my base minimum for all the things until further notice at $65, and happily entertain higher offers.
First up:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crocheted in a 50/50 wool/silk from Juniper Moon Farm, this piece works great as a shawlette on the shoulders and even better as a scarf. I wore it to work today to hold off the chill of a 40F drizzly New England morning because I didn’t want to bother with a sweater. It is soft and comfortable against the skin, and has enough different colors in it to pair well with a variety of outfits.
I hate to let it go, actually, but as the closest one at hand it is first on the block. If you’re interest, please send an offer!
If you have any questions, have at it.
And if you see fit to share this for other potentially interested folks, thank you. 💜

FO: time flies by in the yellow and green...
...Stick around and you'll see what I mean
(there will also be more pictures under the cut)
Remember literally yesterday when I mentioned I was doing a stretchy bind-off purlwise, and I loved the fluidity of it? Well, obviously a bind off pretty much heralds the end of a project in sight so here we are. I was so eager for this one to be completed that I lightly washed the shawl and pinned it overnight so that, by today, I'd have my first finished, knitted shawl.
Tumblr media
Pattern: Mara Shawl by Madelinetosh, available here through Ravelry
Yarn: Arcane Fibre Works, "Calm Waters" -80/20 Extra Fine Merino Nylon Super Wash Fingering Weight. (2 Skeins)
Tools: Clover Takumi Bamboo Circulars - US 5 3.75mm, Eucalan Lavender Wash for blocking
This shawl is a garter stitch shawl with yarn overs down the center and sides to both increase and add a bit of lacy interest. I had actually started on this before I finished the throw blanket, so these two pieces together were so critical for my knitting journey thus far, and I've learned so much already.
While the throw maintained the upward structure of its rows, this shawl gave me the experience of increasing along the center and sides, working outward as well as up. Once I figured out the yarn-over and the cadence from row to row, the location of the yarn-overs was easy to remember. Simple, but elegant on the piece. It did take me a few rows in to figure out that a stitch marker for the RS vs WS would probably be helpful, and from there it was smooth sailing.
Almost too smooth, because I just kept going. I don't remember the cord size I used, but eventually working the stitches scrunched up on the needles, and the work curled into itself. Once that started, I had a hard time imagining what it would look like finished. I had no idea what the shaping would look like once it was off the needles, so my plan was to hope I just figured out when would be a good time to stop. Low stakes winging it, if you will.
Tumblr media
She's big. This is no shawlette you behold. The length surpasses my wingspan on both sides, and the drape down the back is lovely and full while the fabric itself is light and breathable between the stitches. I think because the needles were a bit bigger than recommended size for fingering weight, this resulted in some space between the stitches.
I'm dreaming of that first cool day of fall, and wrapping myself up with her covering my shoulders pinned with a nice brooch, or rolled into a scarf around my neck over denim. She's going to be a wonderful addition to my wardrobe, and I am ecstatic with the final length and look.
I mentioned above I used two skeins. Another learning curve for me - one I intentionally played with here - was the way the colors fell. I don't think it's a crochet thing specifically because I know opinions still vary, but coming from a craft that tends to create potentially less ordered fabrics with variegated yarns, I'm kind of open to color pooling at times. It's not for everyone, but I think there's a fun little magic in letting the colors land the way they want to in both crafts it seems.
I started with one skein, then switched to alternating after a while to learn that technique, then ended with one skein again as I finished out the project. I was nervous about this choice, especially as I started seeing entire blocks of yellow forming. But in the final garment, I don't feel like these larger streaks take away from the color combination. I'm loving that it's not uniform and there's a bit of fun and randomness to how the colors fall.
Tumblr media
Towards the final rows, the pattern switched from garter to 1x1, then 2x2 ribbing, which I could see being a great opportunity to switch out to another color to complement. But I really wanted to have my yellow and green shawl, so I decided to keep working up with the same yarn. Plus I am kind of in love with seeing how different stitches create a new texture that gives the colors in a variegated yarn a bit of a different life to them.
Now - I do have one more skein of this colorway, as I had bought a just-in-case extra. I am thinking my big shawl needs a little something else to go with it - maybe a hat or some fingerless gloves, oooh! or some socks.
Now, I have... how many more months till I can wear this?

So ! I have crocheted my two first ever shawls over the course of these past few weeks, using the South Bay Shawlette pattern that I got from a french crochet blog !
I have two identical cakes of yarn and thought well, might as well use them both :) The black -> cream one is pulled from the center, the cream -> black one is leftover cream from the first one + pulled from the outside. That makes it slightly bigger !
The second shawl is also less stiff than the first one due to me figuring out how to deal with the tension better, but I'm not certain you can see it in photos. Either way I should probably block them both, even if I don't really have any idea how to go about it right now - they're... too large for the drying rack I use for clothes, LOL
I'll figure something out. It was a very fun project ! Very relaxing.
Under the cut is a size comparison of them both, on my bed :

First ever big knitting project is set for blocking!

Pattern is Klé Shawlette by Paula Pereira
Saw the blue and red yarns, one skein each, in a craft shop and knew they wanted to be a blue shawl with a red lace border, and this pattern was great for it! Ideally, it would have tapered more toward the ends and the lace edges met, but as this was my first garment with this type of construction, I can live with it. I may even crochet lace corners with the remaining red!
This was my first time doing short rows and picot, and the first time I was determined to finish something with lace rather than just dabble in it.
Very pleased with the result, though there is a mysterious hole in one of the lace sections that I'll have to sort out once it's dried.

Stitchery Saturday, Part Deux.
Managed to finish this simple, spring-colored shawlette just in time for the weather to turn icky-hot.
What’s this got to do with Buster?  He was seen knitting in The Railrodder, and I once saw a photo of him doing crochet work with ‘a ladies knitting circle.’  So there ya go.

I have a bunch of yarns that are all pretty colours but just not ones I'd wear. Some are nearly full skeins of bright summery colours and when I put them together as a fair isle it's an Easter egg aesthetic that I don't like. I'm trying to come up with projects that I can do to use them up, or that use fewer skeins of yarn so I don't have to use the full Easter egg spectrum and can stick with just yellows, blues, or pinks. I will probably make myself another pair of garters, and I want to crochet a small purse/bag to keep tissues and a glasses cleaner in. I also want to crochet a sort of purse to carry my phone in around the house (my house clothes don't always have pockets and it annoys me). I will also try to crochet a detachable collar (or a couple) and a small capelet/shawlette. But after all these project ideas, I'd still have yarn leftover!

Working on a quick gift for a friend:
Tumblr media
Just a simple little one-skein shawlette in a dk Rambouillet dyed with onion skins & brazilwood (by the lovely @boneandbirch on IG). It's a 7-Row repeat and something I could have absolutely just done off the cuff of my head, but this time I thought I'd try and write it out beforehand, just to see if I was able to picture in my head how I wanted it to look and write corresponding directions that actually produce the correct look.
It worked!
I've been writing down my knit patterns (for myself) for a while, but have never actually written a crochet pattern before. I've gotten good at following crochet patterns (written and charted), and am able to wing super simple patterns (like moss stitch blankets/scarves/cowls/etc; granny square blankets; 2-row dc+dc, chain, dc cowls, etc), but haven't ever tried my hand at writing anything I do for crochet down.
So, this may be ridiculously simple compared to a vast amount of other patterns out there, but simple doesn't mean bad. Sometimes simple is getting back to your roots, to gently starting fresh, to slowing down: an exhale to create a moment that is just a pure enjoyment of the present. It's perfect for what I wanted, and creaks open the door to writing down more crochet patterns in the future (I have a cowl I'm working on for which I'm likely going to write down the pattern), and maybe even one day having them understandable enough to folks outside my own referential head to release the patterns into the wild for others to make.
Maybe I'll do that for knit patterns as well? Who knows; we'll see.

On Break! (and also not really)
Taking a quick break from your not so regularly scheduled knots and fibercrafts to share that I will be away enjoying the murky greens of the Atlantic this week. Luckily for this blog, Crochet is one of my favorite pastimes for enjoying the beach - once I can figure out a system for all that pesky sand.
Tumblr media
It's the first year I've had Tunisian Crochet and Knitting in my repertoire, so this year I brought with me one project for each craft, except Knitting for which I brought two. My last post shared how many WIPs I have underway, so you know where I am at. But I wanted specifically to enjoy a "beach knit" so I spent my morning casting on a new project in a yarn I've been dying to use.
This is Hedgehog Fibres Sock in the colorway "Soundwave." It is a 90/10 blend of Merino Wool and Nylon, and comes with 437 yards of fingering weight softness. It's among the first of those hand-dyed luxury yarns that drew my attention, and I knew immediately I wanted to knit with it one day. Hedgehog Fibres, in so many of the colorways, provides an adventure, and this one is no exception with its scattering of purples, pinks, blues, and yellows.
Tumblr media
I feel like the garter stitch is a perfect match for the name of this yarn too, colors undulating in and out of each other in a visual oscillation to match the referenced auditory one. And with the call of the sea within reach, I'm very ready to lose myself in sound and stitches.
The pattern I am using is called Spring Thing by Espace Tricot. And no, I absolutely did not gauge swatch. I will say: this yarn feels a little thin for the size 6 (4mm) the main pattern calls for, and it's very likely this sock is more of a light fingering. Since this is an asymmetrical shawlette design, I think it will still be ok; the spacing should give it more breathability which you'd kind of want in the spring and summer anyway. But don't take my word for it. I still don't know what I am doing. There's definitely still some inconsistency in my tension. Blocking. It'll be magic.
It'll all be fiiiiiine.
I'm also having too much fun with this yarn to deconstruct and start again. (I didn't bring my interchangeables, so it's the size 6's or nada).
