Enjoy an authentic Rwandan village experiences of your choice courtesy of Azizi Life. Azizi Life partners with rural Rwandans to bring fair trade beauty to your life and theirs. A Day in the Life of an Artisan Become part of a weaving cooperative for the day. The Artisan Day is the very first experience created by the artisans, and is the heart of Azizi Life Experiences. Join your artisan hostesses in their village for a morning of family chores, a simple, home-cooked lunch, and an afternoon of learning how to craft. With your translator alongside, you will love sharing life, work, conversation and laughter with the artisans and their families. Imigongo (cow dung art) Experience Years ago in the time of the Rwandan Kings, there once was a prince who decided to decorate his house by carving geometric shapes directly into the wall of his hut. In time this technique was developed into a popular form of Traditional Rwandan art call “Imigongo.” During your experience you will learn the history, the method and then make your own art to take away with you. Traditional Construction You may have seen the high rise buildings in Kigali, but this Azizi Life Experience is your chance to learn something about the traditional building techniques, some of them used since the times of the King. In the morning you will collect water and soil, which you will then be taught how to make into mud bricks. After making your own bricks, you will dig the foundations and learn how to lay the bricks in a way to ensure the building will be strong. By this point, you will have built up a bit of an appetite and so everyone will stop work and share a simple home-cooked lunch with your host family. Banana Juice Making Traditionally shared during weddings and other celebrations, banana juice (and beer!) has long been a central part of Rwandan parties. Although nowadays banana juice can be easily bought from the local store, the traditional technique for making your own brew is a much greater labor of love. #FollowADifferentPath #crookedcompass #azizilife #remarkablerwanda #rwanda #africa #villagelife #travel #traveller #traveler #dream #explore #discover #wanderlust #experience

Harar is in the Eastern part of Ethiopia, some 520 km from Addis Ababa. It constitutes one of Ethiopia’s nine autonomous regional states. There had been settlements in the area since the 10th century, but the city attained prominence in the sixteenth century under the great Muslim warrior, Ahmed bin Ibrahim al-Ghazi, or Ahmed Gragn, (Ahmed the Left Handed), who brought the Jihad or Holy War to the Ethiopian highlands. There are 140 mosques and shrines within the city and it is said to be the fourth holiest place in Islam, after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. Harar today continues to attract the fascination of visitors. The site itself is scenically stunning - situated on a magnificent hilltop and surrounded in part by deep gorges. To add to its natural impregnability, the 16th century leader Nur ibn al-Wazir Mujahid built a defensive wall around the city, which with its five gates remains one of the most distinctive features of the city (shown below). Harar has grown beyond its walls, and is now divided into the old and new towns. Within the walled part, the jegol, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the streets are narrow and winding while the houses have distinct architectural features, with carved woodwork and specially shaped windows and doors. #FollowADifferentPath #crookedcompass #ethiopia #africa #harar #carlife #travel #traveller #traveler #dream #explore #discover #wanderlust

Vat Phou is a temple complex located in southern Laos, just 6km north of the famous Mekong River. There was a temple on the site as early as the 5th century, but the surviving structures date from the 11th to 13th centuries. The temple has a unique structure, in which the elements lead to a shrine where a lingam dedicated to Lord Shiva was bathed in water from a mountain spring. The site later became a centre of Theravada Buddhist worship, which it remains today. #FollowADifferentPath #crookedcompass #cambodia #asia #temples #vatphou #travel #traveller #traveler #dream #explore #discover #wanderlust #experience

Located just 40 km away from the main temples at Angkor Wat, is the lesser known and unexplored temple of Beng Mealea. Undiscovered for centuries, Beng Mealea has fairly recently been made accessible to the public and remains largely unrestored. It is one of the very few temples that adventurers can actually climb through. Whilst it is thought that the temple was built as a Hindu complex, there are various carvings displaying Buddhist motifs. The history of the temple is unknown and it can be dated only by its architectural style, identical to Angkor Wat, so scholars assumed it was built during the reign of king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century. For years it was difficult to reach temple, with trees and thick brush thriving amidst its towers and courtyards and many of its stones lying in great heaps. Recently a road has been built, allowing visitors to take a day trip from Siem Reap. Visit Beng Mela in 2018 with Crooked Compass! #followadifferentpath #crookedcompass #cambodia #bengmela #temples #asia #travel #traveller #traveler #dream #explore #discover #wanderlust #experience #bucketlist
