What a weird little show. I mean it does what it says on the tin, a Terminator anime.

What it does is introduces yet another splinter timeline, this time with a competing company and a.i. to Skynet called Kokoro and it has the silliest robots

It is interesting, the push and pull of telling a terminator story set in 90s Tokyo while also doing your own thing. I'm not sure it's entirely successful but points for trying.

I'm trying to get back into coding as a hobby, so I wrote a really simple Python script that generates random names. Like, day 1 CS101 type stuff. Okay, being fair to myself, maybe day 2, because I defined a function and used a for loop and opened files with with statements. Point is, it's like 12 lines.

Some of these names, though.

Beta Testers Needed Hey, guys!  I need some beta testers for a tutorial project.  I'm going to be taking the Cross Stitch 101 series and re-doing it, effectively, to work as a cohesive unit.  I will also be releasing a companion book to go with it. I'm looking for people who can review both of these elements and give me any feedback or questions they might have.  I'll also be looking through my YouTube comments to see what common questions people have. Ideally, I'm looking for people who are relatively new to the hobby, since you won't be able to fill in any gaps I might have left anywhere.  The more questions you can ask me, the better. hey, my name’s dale. but no one’s listening, and no one cares. but if you’re reading this, then you’re reading this. 

i think i’m just gonna use this tumblr to talk about some random stuff whenever. i don’t really know yet. maybe some human some where will be able to relate. and maybe not. probably not. but maybe. did i already say that?

anyway, i went to a couple really sick concerts last week - one by gods in the sky and one by gods unknown. i’ll write separate posts about them.

How'd you learn computer science? What tips do you have for someone trying to self-learn? And (if you're female) what's been your experience working/studying as a woman in tech?

how did i learn computer science? the answer is v painfully, slowly, and consistently. i toiled. long answer: dad pushed me to start learning programming in 8th grade. since i was a typical teenage rebel, i refused. this was probably bc the language in question was java. and it was pretty boring. during my senior year in high school, the mooc hype got started. everyone in my v stem high school started to take the stanford ai class offered by prof thrun. i thought it was too late to sign up so i decided to take a cs101 class: building your own search engine (the very first iteration!) by udacity instead.

best decision of my life. when i wrote my very tiny web crawler for the first time, i was hooked.

the rest of my cs knowledge comes from self study and reading a lot. i majored in electrical and computer engineering in college, but i quickly began to detest anything hardware related after my second year. i took courses in data structure and algorithms but was unable to take more courses b/c of the hardware lab courses taking all my time. i wanted to switch to cs but had a working relationship with my lab mates and professors that i didn’t want to let go off. when i decided to do a masters in ece, i decided to focus more on software (esp data analytics and machine learning) instead. in fact, i was the first and only person from my research group whose entire thesis was more software based than hardware!

tips i have for someone trying to self learn: (from Quora)

try to figure it out for yourself

teach the idea to someone else once you’ve learned something, repeat the entire reasoning behind it for yourself, working through each detail

map out the ideas of your class and relate them to your prior knowledge

make sure your study sessions include all the principles of deliberate practice, especially feedback, challenge, and attention

build an image of yourself as someone motivated by learning and proud of having worked hard and effectively rather than as someone proud of being smart or renowned

find a system or systems that lets you handle all the details of life smoothly and efficiently.

search for the flow state, notice when you enter it, and put yourself in position to find flow more and more often.

work on different subjects, reviewing both advanced and basic material.

take care of your physical health

as far as your last question, i have not worked in industry yet. i have read so many horror stories and i really hope i will not have one of them. so far, everyone has been helpful and not one has been (deliberately) denigrating.
