The main common denominator between species with dedicated vent blogs are staff and owners who shut down any and all feedback and criticism. Another commonality is being ban-happy against members for minor slights.

Wyngro isn’t as relevant now but in my opinion is a perfectly clear example of this. They made major decisions that upset the majority of their community, and instead of listening or compromising, they banned everyone who spoke out. This happened multiple times until the species inevitably lost its community entirely.

I see this echoed with Succubuns and Terraliens most, which are also the CS with the most active dedicated vent blogs.

If you run a species, and you’re afraid of having it come up on vent blogs? The biggest thing you can do is learn to take criticism well. Someone saying they think your species could use more FTO-friendly mechanics isn’t personally attacking you. Someone saying that MYO approvals are too nitpicky and inconsistent isn’t trying to insult you.

Obviously, sometimes, even species that do their best will end up on vent blogs if they piss off the wrong person, but in the end, pissing off one person who posts one vent or leaves your species individually is better than pissing off an entire community to the point where they make a whole dedicated blog to let out the criticism you refuse to accept face-to-face.

I created a species years ago, one that no one had looked into on DA back when it still fun to post there. A friend of mine gave me a TH code so that I could move everything over before the Eclipse takeover, and after I moved, I found out that someone had literally copied my species trait from trait, and even the name was near identical.

It was quite the shock, because the person who ripped off my species was actually a pretty good artist and I was a literal nobody, I didn't think that anyone would actually rip off my ideas as shamelessly as they did. I wanted to say something to them, but in the end I just let it go and dropped working on anything species related for the last five years because of it.

Today, I was randomly going through some files I had on my old PC and found my old species trait sheets and mascots, and it sparked something into me to start working on and recreating species again. I'm going to work on building back up what I once had, especially now that we have CharacterHub to work with.

I absolutely can't stand cs creators who make basic hybrids/combinations of a couple animals or just mildly change an existing animal and call it a closed species. Like gatordogs, phidopteryxes, and mochi raptors are all examples of it and it's awful. I dont think you should be able to claim something as a closed species if it isn't something you actually created/ put time and effort into, imo :/

I want to leave too but i love my cham so much. They’re genuinely one of my main ocs and i have so many friends there. With the hiatus (and how they’re still making adopts to sell for like 400 it’s insane) i’ve lost most hope in the community. I used to love seel’s work and i used to view them as one of my favourite artists. I remember looking at chams as a younger kiddo being like “i want one of those!” Now i just want out. I want out so bad but i don’t want to lose the genuine connections i have with people.

It’s so unfriendly to beginner artists and newer members to the “community” in general too.

Sorry for the long-ish rant, just needed to get stuff off my chest.

just had perhaps the most fucked up experience in closed species ever, lads. artist died in the middle of completing my breeding. (lineart finished, colors not.) the other artists are of course trying to make it right by completing the breeding but frankly it's the least of my priorities right now. it's one thing for someone to leave a species but a whole different thing to know they're just... gone. look at the masterlist and see their characters still there. and it's fucked up that a community i am a part of has lost such a genuinely kind, funny and talented person.

please appreciate your artists, folks. they're humans too at the end of the day.

i love closed species but i feel like trying to participate in their communities has just made me more self-conscious about my autism. i feel like i come off like some sort of creepy orbiter in the few spaces i try to interact in when that isnt the case at all. my autism primarily impacts my abilities to communicate and make friends, so it just really hurts and really sucks when i get ignored or treated differently when i try to be nice and speak to people.

anon who dislikes gender variables in cs, I’m also non binary and I disagree. You can still identify as non binary regardless of your presentation or AGAB. Think outside the box, also. Maybe in the species males have horns, and females don’t. So, what if your trans or non binary character modifies their horns in some way, or if they don’t have them, they use prosthetics? It’s only a problem if the species restricts that freedom imo

was recommended a CS a while back and i was nodding along with the rules until i was broadsided by one that was, paraphrased: "you're not allowed to make (species) characters evil." op if i'm paying you $50 for your glorified sparkledog i'm gonna do whatever i please with them, thanks. i'm gonna make them a d&d character totally unconnected to the species lore. i'm gonna cross that shit over with 12 other species. and i'm gonna make them steal candy from babies and small businesses.

An advice for making a CS/arpg based off what i’ve seen from most lorekeepers:

Prepare all your basic traits before opening, especially the visuals! So that your members and maybe even staff can understand how your species looks. Later you can addon new traits and stuff.

Have a verification gmail setup before opening!! So that you don’t have to have your coder manually verify people, it’s puts less stress on the coders and the members.

Have beta testers so they can give you advice on what needs to be changed or improved for your lorekeeper. Your lorekeeper doesn’t need to be visual appealing to be “good”

At least have one more perma prompts available. What’s the point in calling it an arpg if your members can’t engage from making art?

Don’t start on a lorekeeper right away. A lot of currently lorekeeper cs/arpg im part of usually start with deviantart or th worlds since lorekeepers cost money and can be more expensive with addons and hiring coders. Also those platforms can be easier to manage more than a lorekeeper.

That’s all I got for now! There’s probably more i forgot about but that’s usually the common issues I find in lorekeepers!

The gellocats discord is so fucking uncomfortable, dear lord. People will quite literally start venting in the general chat out of nowhere, and the rules encourage this! Rule 3.5, exactly as it's written:

"Don't interupt ongoing discussions" is one thing, but venting? That inevitably turns 90% of servers into toxic cesspits. Jesus Christ.

Additionally, here's rule 4:

4 Please use tone tags when joking or being sarcastic (as well as other tone tags when needed)

..which is nice, and another thing that should be encouraged! Not necessarily tone tags, as there's a lot of those and it's hard to tell the difference between some (I have had people tell me with equal sincerity that /s is both sarcastic and serious) but some form of indicator is a good thing!

..except that people USE THESE FOR JOKES and haven't actually been using them when they'd be genuinely helpful. (See: there was an entire half hour the other day where people were adding slash j to the end of EVERY message they sent, regardless of content. Meanwhile, paranoia inducing phrases and straight up lies are free to go unmarked while mods are in the chat..)

Congratulations: way to ensure your server sucks and only you and your friends + mods feel comfortable :/

That sounds horrendous, CS servers are not somewhere you should be venting in. It just brings out the most toxic people and creates an overall just toxic environment.

Frustrating seeing Succubun mods keep lying that the site take down was some "bad faith attack/grief attempt" when we have all the emails and proof it was their site domain taking them down for violating labor laws. They're so LUCKY that someone messaged the site domain for employment clarification in good faith because they could have EASILY been reported federally instead.

They could have feasibly told the truth too! Just said "oh woops, we changed the language of the work we promise, it doesnt technically fulfill all the requirements of employment" and simply explain it as an innocent misuse of language

Pure speculation, but the only reason I could imagine they would lie, is because the mods are still lying to their "employees" that they're "employed" to whatever way that benefits the mods.

Hi, I was notified about some asks about me on this blog concerning feral porn, and I wanted just to send in a post to clear things up since I do not want to be associated with anything feral-related. The art for my dragon!AU was never in any way or form intended to be feral art. The pieces for both AUs were made with the "Harkness test" in mind, They're both presented as sentient human beings that can shapeshift (same for my werewolf AU).

I was unaware that some of my art was perceived as feral, and I am/was extremely uncomfortable when I found out it was perceived that way, I removed those pieces a while ago and believe they are no longer on my blog. I cannot control if they have been reuploaded on third-party sites, but to my knowledge, I have removed all of them and those i have access to.

I apologize for any discomfort my past work may have caused, and I want to clarify that creating art that could be deemed feral was NEVER my intention.

On the other point of contention, I also have in the past talked about the defending of the writer, but I can only share my part and reasoning of the story since another closed species owner was involved,whom I am no longer in contact with and wish to not be associated with, hope you can understand.

Unlike how other people might have reacted I very much needed a second to come to terms with the fact that somebody i deemed a good friend created some fucked up content I wasn't aware of. it's admittedly very hard for me to deal with situations like this since I put a lot of time and effort into my online friendships and sadly I get VERY over-attached and care too excessively for people I deem friends and or users in my server,, EVEN if they don't have my best interest in mind, so finding out about stuff like this doesn't equal turning off a simple light switch for me, this is very much one of my flaws. After I had time to process and had time to talk with my mods and make them aware of the situation, the person in question has been blocked, banned and removed.

I am not seeking approval or forgiveness from others; you are welcome to make your judgment and form your own opinion of me. I strongly disapprove of feral art and regret making others uncomfortable with my past work, this was and has never my intention.

But generally when it comes to artists who like have said they don’t support what they made anymore and have shown it through years of not doing it saying its bad and speaking out, I pretty much think we could be a bit more forgiving as a community to them since people can change especially if they didn’t understand why it was bad at the time it shouldnt haunt them forever they should be allowed to rejoin spaces if they can show they changed
