Since Super Monkey Ball is getting a new game, I figured I'd try making an SNES Remix of Monkey Island from Banana Blitz. The original Wii version, not the HD version. Haven't played THAT game, but I do know the song from the mobile ports as well as Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing.

Basically, the Lp norms are ways of measuring distance. The three most important Lp norms are L1, L2, and Linfinity. In L2, a circle just looks like how we usually imagine a circle. In fact, that is the Euclidean norm that we usually use to measure distance.

The unit circle is the circle where all points are 1 unit away from the origin. In other words, all points (x,y), where sqrt(|x|^2 + |y|^2) = 1 (via the Pythagorean theorem).

In L1, the unit circle is all points where |x|+|y|=1. That gives you a square that is rotated by 45 degrees. A more general approach would be to say firstroot(|x|+|y|)=1, but the “first root” doesn’t do anything (since it would ask for which number do I have to multiply with itself ONE time to get the number? Or in other words, if square root means ^(1/2) and cuberoot is ^(1/3), then the “first root” would be ^(1/1)) This is also called the Taxicab norm.

That means that in L3 for example, the unit circle would be all points for which cuberoot(|x|^3+|y|^3) = 1

Now Linfinity is a bit tricky, because, what is the infinitieth root?????? By looking at the Lp norms and letting p->infinity, we get that Linfinity is the maximum norm. So the unit circle consists of all points (x,y) where the maximum of |x| and |y| is 1. In other words, all points where |x|=1, |y|<=1 or |y|=1, |x|<=1. That gives us a full square with side length 2.

TLDR: There are norms in which circles don’t look like circles. One example are the Lp norms, where L1, L2 and Linfinity are the three most famous ones. This coincides with the naming of Bioshock games (B1, B2, Binfinite), which is why part of the cover of the Bioshock games was cut out in the way how a circle looks in the according norm.
