Listen, burning the Gävle goat is a ritual of edge and forge lore. The struggle is the point, and through fire it is transformed. I don't make the rules.

My review of Book of Hours is dropping tomorrow at 6pm Irish time!! Super excited to share this one with the world - I have a lot to say about this game 👀
(I forgot to link my YouTube and had to add it after like some kind of rank amateur)

Card game mechanics have existed in video games since forever, yet it feels like most games only tend to go for the most basic options. In my longest video yet, I take a look at a few video games that I think go above and beyond with making their card mechanics not only engaging, but narratively impactful.

Update on my Cultist Sim escapades:
I got the Incursus ending!
Well, it was a co-op between me and my brother to share knowledge we gathered on our own and also looking up where we could get each of the Influences on the wiki (we were not risking an endgame save for that shit, it took days and we had so much Lore and people) (we even got a Conqueress by recruiting a Rival that was still a Renegade as an aspect but got Long in the Making on her title) (yes it was a bug and she had 10 Edge and 7 Grail she was so broken). We just needed one of our Seers alongside her and we just plowed through the expeditions and then we immediately got a Glory loss right after on the new starting scenario you get guaranteed after an Incursus win lmao.
Now I want to see what my Forge save will be able to do, it was SO FUCKING FUN! The moment you catch yourself remembering how to perform certain Rites without fiddling around and seeing a way into stronger Lore with what you have on you at the moment is the biggest shot of dopamine I got in my life right next to a Darkest Dungeon Occultist max crit heal. It clicks and then you see the game with a whole new perspective and I might just have become influenced by the gameplay loop because I'm just that susceptible but it feels good to get cool art for my struggles so I don't care.
I am also very tempted to try my hand at drawing art of the descriptions of the Mansus. Entering the Wood, encountering the later gates, talking to the Long in the Lodge of the White Knight, even the card descriptions for Lore has scenes that can be depicted (look up Secret Histories 12 in the Fandom wiki) (it's an interesting one). I definitely won't do them justice and this week I'm gonna be busy with Transitioning-into-Young-Adult Responsibilities™ so I might have to shove them somewhere in my head for later but I do want to put the images on paper at some point so that is coming. Probably. Most likely.
Yeah.
Have a funny image.

I started playing this game Cultist Simulator and I got very invested in it, very quickly. First of all because I love puzzle games and this definitely is one. Especially with how there is no tutorial and you are basically told to keep at it and you’ll figure it out.
But the further along I get into it I realize how similar it feels to The Magnus Archives. The different “hours” I think they are called, seem rather similar to the Fears. And the further you research it in the dreams it feels like you’re becoming an avatar. Also with how you start by not knowing anything that’s going on but being intrigued anyway.
It’s such a fun and frustrating game, and it gets bonus points for reminding me of my favorite podcast series.

Book of Hours thoughts—
I tend to think Cultist Simulator is a stronger game than Book of Hours. If you enjoy a sense of there being like, stakes, as many gamers do, Cultist Simulator will be a better vibe for you!
But Book of Hours is charming and packed full of the worldbuilding and lore and everything is so detailed and carefully designed. I believe Weather Factory wanted to use the same lore for a much cosier and less punishing game, so I think they succeeded fantastically in that.
You really gotta be willing to read a lot and fuck around for both of them to get anywhere though.

i was wondering if you'll be checking out Book of Hours, seeing as Cultist Simulator wasn't your cup of tea?
I found cultist Simulator to be well written and interested, but hard to get into because my normal ass day job is wandering around the city looking for occult texts to study. I play video games to relax after work not simulate more of it lmao.

What Cultist Simulator Principle are you aligned with?
So, I imagine someone might've done this before, but I'm doing it now! If you're someone who doesn't know anything about the world of Cultist Simulator, there's an explanation below the cut, if you know what's going on though, get to voting!
An Explanation for the uninitiated:
Cultist Simulator is a card-based video game revolving around time and resource management, along with roguelike elements, set in a version of early 20th-century London in which there are various off-putting and dangerous supernatural entities and gods, it revolves around the player's attempts to gain occult power and knowledge as they build up a roster of followers with differing personalities and abilities.
Within the game, almost all items have at least one Principle, as they represent archetypical facets of reality, and correlate with certain personalities and types of people, a list explaining each Principle follows:
Lantern: The Principle of light and enlightenment, knowledge and its acquisition.
Forge: The Principle of fire and destructive change, transformation through consumption.
Edge: The Principle of violence, conflict, and war.
Winter: The Principle of death, silence, snow, and the memory of those who are passed.
Heart: The Principle of life and endurance, the preservation of what is.
Grail: The Principle of desire and hedonism, hunger and lust.
Moth: The Principle of perilous yearning, chaos and whimsical passion. Chasing after that which will kill you.
Knock: The Principle of doorways and openings, thresholds, liminal spaces and the undoing of barriers.
Secret Histories: The Principle of alien pasts that sit beneath the skin of the history we know. Complexities and contradictions in history and the way it is perceived.
By the way, fellow Cultist Simulator fans, if you feel my explanations miss anything, please tell me!
