I just saw this tiktok video of what I believe is an Indian drama. I'm not 100% sure if it was a show or movie. I couldn't find the name on it. But in the video, it was described that a village made its money by selling off daughters to wealthy men for marriage. The female lead was the "ugly" girl (she was not ugly) who managed a side business off this main business by having the potential grooms see her first as their bride and then showing the real girl. Basically, helping with negotiations saying, "Hey, you could've gotten me, but instead, we have this gem here. Don't you think she's worth more?" After getting the higher bride price she takes her cut.
After watching, I said I could see Kate and Penelope making a small business doing this around the ton. Not to say they aren't beautiful, they are, and the girl in the original video was beautiful too. They just don't fit society beauty standards. Actually, side note now that I think about it canonically the only one of the wives who did was Sophie. Sophie was described to fit the ton's beauty standards to a t and would probably have been the incomparable/diamond of her debute season if she was born legitimate.
Anyway, Kate probably started it. For one reason or another, they couldn't wait for Edwina to debute, and Kate wasn't having a successful season, so she thought of a way to earn some money to help her family. It started as an accident, Kate was visiting a friend the same time negotiations were happening for her friend's engagement. Her friend has never met the lord, and two just so happened to walk by the room the negotiations were happening in. The lord saw Kate before her friend and assumed she was to be his bride. He was about to be outraged until her friend turned the corner. Things went much better for the bride to be in the negotiations after that.
Kate's friend apologized for the situation, but the wheels in Kate's head were turning. She didn't care all that much about being compared to her friend. Strangers loved to unpromptly compare her to Edwina when they were together and Kate couldn't really bring herself to care she has other things to worry about. But this new development, might work in her favor.
So Kate started offering her services to get brides to be better deals on marriage negotiations. First looks from arranged marriages she'll be in front and then show the real bride. Sometimes, be part of the negotiations by giving little reminders that hey, she is still in need of a husband, and if they want to pay less, then they can negotiate with her family. Sometimes, she didn't have to do anything besides sit next to the bride to be and just talk with her as a silent reminder. Kate also offered services such as attending balls with her clients and spreading word about bride's accomplishments. Kate would get her cut, which helped her family's financial situation longer, just long enough to get Edwina married.
A few years pass, and Kate is booked, possibly overly so. She has more and more parents there who wish for her to be part of the negotiations. There are so many that there is no possible way she can do them all by herself. Unless she gets a partner.
In 1813, Kate saw a miserable wallflower standing at the edge of one of the balls. That yellow dress did not do the poor girl any favors with her complexion, nor did the shape help with her curvy figure. Her poor red hair reminded Kate of an overdone poodle. She looked to be Edwina's age, and that made Kate's big sister instincts go off.
Introductions were made, and Kate learned the girl's name was Penelope Featherington. Kate learned the girl was rather smart and witty when she relaxed around you. She, like Kate, had a good head on her shoulders and it's a shame others don't see that.
Oh well, their loss is Kate's gain.
"Penelope, how would you feel about helping me with some business?" Kate asked one night at a ball. She had a negotiation to go to tomorrow and it would be an ideal time to take her new friend to get her feet wet.
Penelope looked up at Kate. "What kind of business?"
Kate took Penelope with her to the negotiations, and the deals doubled in favor of the bride.
Kate grinned the first time her friend participated in negotiations, raising deals much more favorably for the bride. By mid-season, Penelope will be ready to go on her own. Which will be good because next season, Edwina debutes. Kate will have to focus on her while Penelope takes on the majority of the negotiation calls. When Edwina is settled then Kate can fully jump back in. Which hopefully shouldn't be too hard, Kate knows Edwina will be popular, so it's just a matter of sorting the good men from the rakes. After that Kate can fully focus on her business.
It will all go according to plan.

How to Choose a Bridal Lehenga for Your Body Shape
If we were to receive a dime every time we hear a bride express her desire for an 18-kali full flared lehenga, we would have amassed a fortune by now! While it seems that a lehenga with an enormous flare, larger than the mandap itself, is every Indian bride's dream, there are a few factors to consider when selecting a lehenga that suits your specific body type. To begin with, if you are unsure about your body type,
There is an online calculator available that can determine your body shape. In this article, we will discuss some of the most common body shapes, including Hourglass, Apple, Pear, Rectangle, and Round Shaped. So, let's dive in!
Hourglass Shape
Tumblr media
If you have an Hourglass or an X shaped body, then congratulations are in order! You have a figure that can rock pretty much anything. When it comes to lehengas, opt for an A-line style in a fluid fabric like Velvet, Georgette, or Chiffon. These fabrics will complement your shape beautifully without appearing stiff.
Lehenga Skirt To enhance your waist, pair your A-line lehenga with a short choli blouse. This will show off your waist and make you look like a million bucks!
Lehenga Dupatta When it comes to draping a lehenga dupatta, you have the freedom to choose any style. Just make sure that your waist is visible and the dupatta doesn't cover it up.
If you're looking for some lehenga options specifically tailored for your hourglass figure, here are a few suggestions.
Rectangle Shape
Tumblr media
If you possess a rectangular body shape, also known as an H shape, it is likely that you have a slender and athletic frame without many curves. In order to enhance your figure, your lehenga should be designed to create the illusion of curves. Lehenga Skirt Opt for a wide and full skirt made from a stiff fabric to add volume at the bottom. Raw Silk would be an ideal choice for you, followed by net. To achieve a more flared look, consider adding can-can to the lehenga.
Lehenga Blouse Pair your flared lehenga with a low and plunging blouse to create the appearance of curves.
Dupatta Drape Since you may have broad shoulders, it is important to choose a dupatta that is not stiff, as it can further increase their width. Instead, opt for a flowy and soft dupatta to add a touch of softness to your overall look. Here are some lehenga options that will complement your body shape!
Pear Shaped body or Bottom Heavy
To flatter your pear-shaped or bottom-heavy body, it is important to focus on balancing out your proportions. When it comes to your lehenga skirt, opt for horizontal details that will create a sense of balance between your narrow top and curvy hips. Avoid fish-tailed or snug- fitting skirts, and instead choose something plain and flowy. Be cautious not to go for excessive flare, as it may make your body appear disproportionate.
Lehenga Skirt For your lehenga blouse, make it the highlight of your ensemble. Consider a blouse with some padding and a deep neckline, as this will help balance out your bottom half. Cape lehengas, high-neck, off-shoulder, or sleeveless blouses are all great options for you.
Lehenga Dupatta When it comes to the lehenga dupatta, a cape style is ideal. Just ensure that the dupatta doesn't flare at the bottom, as it may add unnecessary weight to your look.
Here are some lehenga options that will complement your body shape!
Apple Shaped or Top Heavy
Tumblr media
If the majority of your weight is concentrated at the upper part of your body, it is likely that you have an apple shape, V shape, or inverted triangle body type. Regardless of which category you fall into, layering can be your best ally!
Lehenga Skirt When it comes to choosing a lehenga skirt, opt for jacket lehengas as they are currently in trend. To flatter your figure, select soft and sheer fabrics that can be layered over one another. Additionally, make sure to choose a wide neckline to create a balanced look. Avoid fabrics like brocade or tissue, as they may give a flat appearance to your lower body. Instead, go for flowy materials that add movement.
Lehenga Blouse For the lehenga blouse, it is important to avoid closed-up necklines as they can make your upper body appear wider. Opt for wide and open necklines to create a more flattering silhouette. Steer clear of off-shoulder, deep necks, and sleeveless blouses, as they can give the illusion of a heavier top.
Lehenga Dupatta When it comes to the lehenga dupatta, avoid wrapping it around your neck or bust, as this can make you look heavier. Instead, consider draping it around your elbows for a more flattering look.
To help you in your search for the perfect lehenga, here are some options that will suit your body type!

The Dressmaker Project Process Journal - 12.28.23
Oh boy oh boy its puppet time! I actually missed working on my puppets a lot when I was focusing on the set and the background. I need to pick up some more industry friendly puppet design skills (ie, not relying on wire puppets and figuring out balljoint puppets and 3D printing and stuff) bc I think I'd love to be a fabricator in my professional career.
Anyway, my puppets for the dressmaker project (there will be 3) will be wire puppets - paper heads and a body finished with either masking tape or felt, depending on how this goes. Ideally the eyes will articulate and I will have replacements for eyelids, eyebrows, and mouth movements, but I will have to prototype the hell out of it. I've been working on the character designs for the past week and today I'll be designing and starting on the armatures for at least one of them.
Process under the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The basic plot of my short film will follow my first character, who's a newly wedded Indian bride stuck at home with the expectations of Indian womanhood. I haven't storyboarded or scripted anything (though I will do that after i build my armatures) but I'm interested in telling about creation in the face of really tumultuous times. I'll be setting my characters in the era of unrest and economic boom in Mumbai, where new professionals from around India will move into this bustling city.
I also want the shape language puppet to puppet to be pretty different (as shown in my character designs). The dressmaker is more traditional, more nervous about her place in the world. She's curvy and soft and has big wide eyes - I based her off of my grandmother when she was younger. The friend is sharp edged, modern, 'Westernized' (I based her design heavily off of Poo from K3G). She's independent, chill. The husband will be gangly, nervous, out of place. He wants to provide but is still trying to find his way here. The husband is based pretty heavily off of old photos of my uncle and grandfather too!
So... onto the armature designs!
Redoing armature designs is interesting. I want a lot of expressiveness and less risk of breakage so I'm trying to think of where the weakest points on the puppet are and figuring out how I can little safeties to prevent/replace body parts. Should I make the arms and legs detachable and make multiples? Should I create lil 'bones' to reinforce areas of the puppet?
Here's what I came up with!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I ended up going with what I know - detachable head (and hair for the dressmaker), the wire body continuous outside of that. We'll see if I have to change up that decision as we go along.
Armature sketches are pretty simple - there mostly there to figure out where I want to keep the mass on the body and figure out the body silhouette of each character. I ended up changing the height of the puppets (I felt it was a little small when I was shooting my test images) so the smallest is around 9 inches while the tallest is around 9.75!
Tumblr media
I was eager to get started so I ended up making the legs for the dressmaker started. They're six strands of 1/16 in aluminium wire each, wrapped TIGHT with cotton thread and secured with a knot and super glue. I've had a recurring problem of the legs of my puppet being uneven so I'm trying to minimize that by basing them off the same half - lets hope it works, I want my puppets to walk comfortably ;-;
I think I'm gonna make the armatures for all 3 before I start adding mass so I can tweak as I go, and then its storyboarding/scripting time!

Feeling Deeply
Genre: Fluff so much fluff. Arranged Marriage fic.
Pairing: Namjoon x OC
A/N: Aaaaaa this is the first fic I'm posting ever ever. It's basically a way to follow the red thread of my desires. OC is named Brishti. She's Indian. She's Bengali & curvy & an introvert. This whole fic is 90% going to be a slow burn fluff fic about two introvert nerds getting to know each other. Seriously there's like hardly any real angst, maybe slight angst about okay when are these two going to bang - if you look very carefully but basically its just slooooow fluuuufff. Hopefully you all like it. Please let me know what you think.
Current Chapter: Remember this is all happening in the 1960s. OC & Namjoon are both really well off first gen immigrants. Nowhere is this the general representation of immigrant experience. Just a special exception because I want to write fluuuuffff. A bit of how this weird marriage took place. Lots of character details.
Previously in Feeling Deeply: Preface-ish
CHAPTER 1
The doorbell rang. Brishti got up to answer it. She handed the cheque to the movers. She was proud to have chipped in. Namjoon hadn’t had a problem with it. Brishti had tried really hard to react as though that was a very normal thing to have happened in a marriage (it wasn’t, not in the marriages she’d seen). Namjoon had taken part in picking out the furniture too - something that was always delegated to the woman. In fact, both of them had been clueless about how to decorate a home. All the same, they’d put together the basics. Today, they had received and unpacked all of their furniture - a two seater sofa, two tables - one for him, one for her & a set of four chairs. And a bed. It had been four days since the wedding.
“Brishti…” Namjoon sighed softly, without her knowing.
He seemed to be drunk on her beauty & her words. He was just noticing how her skin reminded him of the colour of the dark chestnut wood in the warmest evening glow.
Many of his relatives were upset he’d chosen a dark-skinned woman as his wife, a woman who was four years older nonetheless! He knew what the gossip-mongers would say, since he was one of the most eligible bachelors in their social circle, back home in Korea - ”She’s 30! Indian! I didn’t know the Kims had such bad money problems!” Even thinking about the snide comments they would be saying made him livid.
He was thankful his parents only wanted him to be happy. Happily married, that is. Happily single was not really an option. Only two weeks ago, Namjoon was approaching 27 and being severely pressured by his parents to get married soon. They were so tired of their son’s fickle mind that they were even prepared to accept a white woman for their daughter-in-law. When his parents heard about Brishti, they were overjoyed that she belonged to the same continent as Korea.
Namjoon would later learn the strange events that landed his would-be Indian bride in the pile of photos sent by his parent-appointed-official Korean matchmaker-cum-defacto-grandmother.
Brishti had avoided marriage like the plague & had tried to keep her freedom. So much so, the shame she’d brought on had forced her parents to cart her off with her brother to London, claiming they’d found a suitor for her there. And so it fell to Bikram, Brishti’s elder brother - who wanted to frolic in London while trying to be a lawyer - to get her married & send word (and a few photos) of his sister’s wedding as soon as possible.
To be in London, to be here in the swinging sixties, Brishti was happy as can be - she was freer here than she had ever been. She cut off her hair to a pixie-cut the first week of being here. Just this would have caused a month-long conflict at her home. Here, she could finally put to use the education she’d received intended as certificates for the trophy wife she was supposed to be. Here, she could dream.
When the novelty of the new place wore off a bit, Brishti missed the forest. She was from Bengal & had practically grown up in the Sunderbans. And that language, the language of forests, that was truly her mother-tongue. There, in the forest everything was equal. A mushroom & a tree, an elephant & an ant - all worked together to create something bigger than the sum of their parts. Out here in the human world, Brishti had noticed a lot more parasitic creatures.
There weren’t many forests in dreary London. Libraries, however, were aplenty. The next best thing was to be surrounded by books. Brishti began dreaming of a life around books. She wanted to work.
When she approached her brother about wanting to apply for an apprenticeship at The British Library, he scoffed at Brishti’s dream. So, a bargain was struck, Brishti would shut up and marry someone that would let her work (just wording it like that enraged her) in exchange for the permission and travel allowance to be an apprentice librarian at the British Library.
Bikram had rushed to his parent-assigned-defacto-Bangla-grandmother-cum-matchmaker but it seemed that she had been rushed to the hospital right before his arrival. Not willing to take any chances, Brishti’s brother had approached the only other matchmaker-cum-asian-grandmother in the building - Namjoon’s. It had taken him an hour and a bribe of 50 pounds to convince the halmeoni to include his ‘wrong-age, wrong-nationality, wrong-colour, wrong-figure, wrong-attitude’ sister’s photos in her pile.
Namjoon saw her in the pile of photos labelled ‘trash’ in Korean - the black and white photograph of Brishti, with the big bright black eyes. And the antics of a woman who clearly didn’t want to get married - she was huffing angrily in the picture, but was about to break into a smile, as if the photographer was teasing her, trying to ease her into taking her picture. There were three pictures, in one of which, Brishti was trying to swat the lens with the book in her hand. Namjoon had studied the picture carefully to find that the book she was reading was Anna Karenina. ‘How fitting’, he had thought then.
He’d told the matchmaker and his parents right away that this is the girl he wanted to meet - the first of all the photos ever shown to him. This was the one right he’d fought for with his parents - he gets to have the final say. His parents had agreed to let him have an almost-arranged marriage. Mostly because of how proud of him they were.
It irked him a little, how proud they were - of their son who had chosen to be a lawyer instead of his thirteen-year-old self’s dream - to be a poet. He knew they meant well. They meant for him to have a stable, settled life. He knew he was a grown man now, still, it scared him to think how they would react if they knew he still wrote poetry and intended to publish, someday, if he ever found someone he could actually read it to. That it was still his dream.
Namjoon got back to the present when Brishti said “Done!” as she handed Namjoon’s pen back to him. She smiled a little smile at him. He felt her smile getting warmer toward him since the first time he’d met her, over a week ago.
Wanting to keep the conversation going, Namjoon asked her, “Is there anything you’d like to ask me?” Half expecting her to ask - ‘How did you decide so soon that you wanted to marry me?’ or ‘Did you ever see me before we met?’ but she turned around to face him & simply asked a question he’d forgotten people could ask each other-
“How are you?”
Just then, it seemed like the universe had conspired for him to meet his dream again - A simple question that carried a hug. Namjoon smiled wide because he found himself married to a poem.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oooooh god you read it?! Thank you so much! Please please let me know what you thought! Get into my messages about it! I would love nothing more than to hear what you felt about this!

Tips For Selecting the Best Lehenga Choli Online
Lehenga choli, also known as Ghagra choli, is an integral part of Indian culture and tradition. Nothing expresses the spirit of Indian weddings more than the elegant and artistic traditional Indian clothes. Among these, the most revered is the lehenga choli, an absolute favorite among Indians. An intricately designed lehenga radiates absolute elegance and grace that can be worn in any traditional ceremony and event.
With the increase in popularity of online shopping in the United States, it has become easy to buy designer lehenga choli online in the USA. There are a variety of reliable stores to buy traditional Indian clothing online.
Online stores let people browse through various colors, designs and styles. However, shopping online has one downside- the unavailability of a trial. There are thousands of lehenga choli designs available in the market, so rather than getting confused with your options and choosing the wrong lehenga (if there is such a thing), here are some tips to keep in mind when you shop lehenga choli online in the USA.
Selecting The Perfect Style
The first thing to consider when buying a lehenga choli online in the USA is the specific style you want to flaunt. There are various designs of lehenga choli with various intricate handiwork like mirror work, embroidery, or a more traditional Chania Choli.
Apart from handiwork, there are also various styles like a crop top, choker neck, or sherwani style top.
Make sure to choose a style that accentuates the shape of your body. If you have an hourglass figure, go for a lehenga with a flowy skirt to enhance your waist. Choose a light fabric with a crop top style choli.
If you are skinnier, choose a lehenga choli with stiff fabric and one with a lot of volume and flare to it.
If you have a curvy figure, try a crop top choli or a long sherwani style one to accentuate your figure. Go for light and flowy fabrics like georgette and avid stiff ones like brocade.
Selecting The Correct Size
Another important aspect of buying a lehenga choli online in the USA is selecting the correct apparel size. For this, you can take a look at the size chart provided with the particular apparel to determine the chest size, waist size, and hip size of the specific clothing.
Remember that the size of your casual everyday clothes is not comparable to ethnic wear.
Selecting The Colour
It is important to select a color that goes with your skin tone and accentuates the jewellery you will be wearing. If you are a guest at a wedding, avoid wearing red, crimson, and maroon, as these are the bride’s colors in India.
Chic colors in vogue this wedding season are pastels, off-whites, and yellow with heavy embroidery work.
Determine the Fabrics
Lehenga choli comes in various fabrics, from net to silk and brocade. Choose a fabric highlighting your shape instead of hiding it in tandem with your body type.
While some fabrics are stretchable, allowing you to order a blouse as per your bust size, others make your curves more prominent. Read the product details carefully to earn about the texture and quality of the fabric.
Check the Return/ Exchange Policies
When you buy designer lehenga choli online in the USA, read through the product's return policy on the site. This will help you change that product without any complications in case the outfit does not fit well or if there is a manufacturing defect. Aside from answering frequently asked questions, the return policy also includes information on shipping, handling, and any additional expenses for returning the product.
Online shopping is about getting the best in your home's comfort. Keep in mind these easy and simple tips when selecting your perfect Indian traditional ghagra choli.
On the other hand, it is also important to be confident in what you are wearing and carry your style with elegance and ease. Consider the above considerations carefully before choosing the perfect lehenga choli best for your body type and the event.
So, relax, and take your time to select the perfect apparel for yourself in the comfort of your home.
