Happy N7 day!

I have posted on my etsy page a completed Commander Jane Shepard in N7 armor and a Kaidan in fatigues. It is my hope to create an extra doll of some sort with each batch of orders I make going forward so I can sell standard characters in this manner. Hopefully, this will cut down on the wait time for some people who don't necessarily want a customized plushie.

Since you didn't specify the oc, I'll pick the ones that I think have the most interesting answers:

4. Is your oc’s environment supportive about their identity? How does this impact them?

Kallian Tabris grew up in an environment that 100% DID NOT support her bisexuality. As an elf from the Denerim alienage, she was expected to marry a man her father and the community elders chose for her and have his children regardless of how she felt about it. A man she didn't even meet until hours before their appointed wedding.

Kallian spent much of her youth rebelling against this custom, but none of it worked. Needless to say, it was quite the shock when Kallian returned home with a human on her arm, much less a human woman.

If you look up Warhammer 40k lore on the subject, you might find people online who insist that the Imperium of Mankind is intensely homophobic and bigoted against minority identities. It kind of makes sense, given how oppressive and evil it is. But the truth is, from Games Workshop themselves, is that the Imperium fully recognizes people for who they are. So long as they're human and serve the God Emperor, they can love whoever they wish and be whoever they wish.

That being said, Nasosi Von Valancius has lived all of her life immersed in the culture of the Ecclisiarchy and the Astra Militarum. While the laws fully support the fact she is asexual and has no interest in "downtime" with her fellow soldiers/officers/dignitaries, the individuals who have propositioned her have had decidedly negative reactions to her declining their propositions. Nasosi's career as a commissar has taken several blows because she did not let a superior officer or Imperial official take her to bed.

6. How does your oc feel about labels? Theirs, or in general?

It's kind of a boring answer, but most of my OCs live in scifi or fantasy worlds where labels like we use them don't really apply. They just love who they love, and other people can either accept it or move on with their lives. I label them for convenience and shorthand in tumblr tags, but they don't really come up in their actual lives very much.

The closest that it affects them is like the example I mentioned for Nasosi above, or my lesbian characters like Jane Shepard and Saoirse. When people who do not match their preferences, either out of ignorance or malice, try to pressure them into things they don't want to do. And then they will explain their labels.

18. Do you prefer to give your ocs specific labels, or keep it unspecified? Why? If applicable, do you change their labels depending on circumstance?

I generally start with a very vague idea for an OC, and their details slowly emerge over time as I develop them. I've never specifically set out to create a "gay oc" or "trans oc", the characters themselves reveal these things over time. Sexuality and identity label headcanons are sometime the very last things that come to me.

Sarit Ramesh was not officially a trans woman when I debuted her, even though I had vague notions of it from the moment I created the character. Instead, I let my internal muse slowly crystallize who she was over time, and that nagging voice never went away, always keeping that detail in the back of my mind. So I eventually realized that it was who she really is, and fully embraced the idea.

Also to mention Nasosi one more time, she was originally an OC I created for the game Tyranny. And in that game, I was super interested in romancing Barik. So while I never said it in a tumblr post, I've always had it in my mind that the original Nasosi is straight.

However, when remaking the character in Warhammer 40k, that idea did not follow. The asexual label slowly came over time, largely influenced by my accidental choice to romance Yrliet. It felt like a natural pairing with the aeldari, and a way to deepen their connection beyond physical intimacy.

“Whatcha reading?”

The gravity well danced across his senses as Shepard tested it, reaching out for him without even realizing she was. It was intoxicating, being able to touch her like this, their connection to each other going beyond the physical. He was still getting reacquainted with the familiar buzz beneath his skin whenever she dipped into the dark energy, even for a second. It was a comfort he didn’t realize he’d missed being away from the Normandy.

When their relationship had first begun, Kaidan hadn’t been able to explain the bond between them even if he wanted to. It just was. But he knew the whys and the hows now. It was more than their biotics, more than the love they felt for each other. This link transcended time and space, it made them stronger, gave them hope, kept them pushing forward despite the odds against them. There had been a whisper of the possibilities back when they chased Saren, but now…

Now it was a part of them embedded so deeply that Kaidan was going to fight like hell to make sure he never lost it. Never lost her again.

Glancing over his shoulder, he was greeted by the playful grin he knew so well. The upturn of those pink lips, the blush that made her freckles almost invisible, the slight wrinkles around her emerald eyes, the gold in her copper hair that only appeared when she was in the perfect light.

Her hair wasn’t as short as it used to be, but it only made it easier for him to run his fingers through. He had to will his body to not react to that thought because it was getting increasingly easy to fall back under her charismatic spell. He’d come to the lounge to relax.

Lifting the datapad, he tilted his head in her direction. “This? Oh, only something that would bore the fabulous Commander Jane Shepard.”

Her responding pout would bring anyone to their knees, but it was specifically reserved for Kaidan in moments when Jane wanted to get her way. And oh, would she. But he didn’t mind playing the game. It always made the loss so much sweeter.

Even if she did win without a modicum of grace.

He felt a surge of dark energy before the datapad was pulled from his hand, landing in hers a second later.

“That’s cheating.”

“Steal it back then.” She grinned triumphantly before turning away, making it difficult for him to get eyes on the datapad. “Hmmm… Let’s see.”

Kaidan rested against the cushions of the sofa, waiting for her to find the title. It wouldn’t take long, but her reaction would be everything. 

“Oo-ho what is this?” Turning to face him with a mischievous sparkle in her eye, she held up the datapad. “Major Alenko, I didn’t know you like historical romance.”

He rolled his eyes to the ceiling, staring at a spot just above his head. “Get it over with.”

Jane danced closer to the couch, reading some of the lines of the book. “Her bosom swelled at his touch, longing for the heat of his mouth. His hands left fire along her skin, each brush setting her nerves aflame.” She burst into laughter. “Oh my god, Kaidan. You read bodice rippers!”

“Blame, James. He’s the one who lent it to me.” 

It was as if he’d given her the gift of her dreams, he’d never seen her so happy. “Oh, I’m for sure using this as blackmail.” She pressed herself against his back, wrapping her arms around his shoulders. “Not for you. For Vega.”

The book dangled in front of him, begging to be returned to its rightful owner.

“Naturally.” He teased, brushing a kiss over her freckled cheek, enjoying her sudden intake of breath. A lock of her hair tickled his cheek as she embraced him tightly, one of her hands lingering against his chest. Kaidan covered her hand with his own, squeezing gently. “Can I help you with something?”

“You can help me with lots of things.” She practically purred in his ear. She pulled away a moment later, taking the datapad with her. “Let’s see what else we have here.” She flipped through his library, browsing the titles with a critical eye. “None of these are even good romances, Kaidan. Did James recommend all of them?”

Kaidan knew what she was doing. He wouldn’t rise to the bait. “Maybe you can point me in a better direction, Jane.”

The temptation to show off her own taste in literature was too great. “Well, Space Divas in Space is space garbage. So jot that down.”

Kaidan held back his laughter, watching as Jane detailed the faults with every romance on his ‘to read’ list. She was so animated, throwing her hands in the air when one particular title appeared.

“Lust Is A Virtue? Babe, I thought you were better than this.” Jane plopped down on the other end of the couch, slanting her eyes in his direction where he was in full relaxation mode. “You’re entirely too calm right now. No vengeful quips? No poking fun at my favorites?”

With a grin, he flicked his wrist, ensnaring the datapad in dark energy. 

“Hey!”

With the datapad solidly back in his hand, he switched it off and placed it on the table behind him. “Why don’t you take a break from criticizing James’ novel collection and come over here?”

She laughed, crawling across the couch to reach him. She hovered briefly, meeting his gaze, the green of her irises almost black in the low light. Dropping her voice an octave, the sound melted the rest of his resolve in an instant. “I knew you didn’t have such bad taste.”

“Mhm.” He mumbled, moving closer to brush a kiss against her nose. She scrunched it in response. “I’m going to ignore all of that and kiss you now.”

“Oh, you are?” She adjusted her weight and settled her hips on his. She fit so perfectly in his life, everything from her powerful biotics to her unrelenting humor to the raging fire a single touch from her sparked. His mother had always talked about all consuming love, about the destiny of two souls so in tune with the other that when they’ve finally connected, nothing could tear them apart. He’d always been inspired by the love his parents shared, but to have something of his own like it, nothing could’ve prepared him. 

Biotics flaring, he enveloped them both in his corona, skin tingling from the field. He knew she felt it too. 

“Cheater.” She murmured before closing the distance between them, her lips a cure for any ails he had. Soft yet unyielding and so totally Shepard. Her hands ran up his chest, bunching the shirt he wore so that she could easily pull it over his head. They broke apart briefly so she could toss the offending clothing to the floor before her hands found a home in his curls, tugging gently, insistently. 

He opened himself to her, releasing the tight control he had on the dark energy completely. Her own biotic field slowly melded with his, something that had taken them years to accomplish and even now, she didn’t push it too far. One wrong move could end disastrously. 

A breathless laugh escaped her lips as she released her hold on her biotics, breath coming in harsh gasps from the exertion. Kaidan opened his eyes, feeling a thrill at the expression she stared back with. Want, longing, a primal need that couldn’t be satisfied in the lounge, so close to the crew deck. 

“You tease me with romance novels and now you do this? What game are you playing, Alenko?”

He raised a brow at the question, enjoying how easily his kisses brought her to her knees. “Game? You think I’d challenge a master? You must think I’m a lot braver than I am.”

Jane’s mouth found the pulse in his throat and she kissed it with a fierceness that almost had him melting into a puddle. Damn, everything about her was his weakness and somehow, also his strength. He only wished that this moment could last forever, that nothing outside of these walls existed. That the war was all but a memory, something they could think of with sorrow, hope on the horizon.

If he could, Kaidan would spend the rest of his life locked in the embrace of Jane Shepard, but reality was a harsh reminder that they couldn’t… not yet at least.

“You’re the bravest man I know.” She whispered, so quietly that he almost didn’t hear even with her being so close. “I’d also like to remind you about that time you ran through a pack of Reaper forces to pull me out of a damned diving mech.”

“I recall Garrus being there too.”

Kaidan could feel the eye roll deep in the depths of his soul. It was almost funny how easily the gravity well responded to her. She shifted so she could meet his gaze, sitting perfectly at ease on top of him. “Garrus didn’t risk his life to bring me home.” She trailed her fingers down his chest, stopping at the curve of his abdomen. 

“It’s because I love you.” It wasn’t much of a confession, but he knew it meant everything to her. Taking one of her hands, he brought it to his mouth for a kiss. “I’d do it again.”

And with how well he knew Shepard, he’d be doing it again in the near future. 

She sighed, tucking herself in between him and the sofa. “I’ll be more careful.”

Being on the frontlines of this war, nothing was further from the truth, but it was a lie that he’d gladly go along with for however long they could get away with it. Wrapping her in his arms, he held her against him, enjoying how her fingers moved against his chest, the way her body fit with his, the warmth of her breath against his cheek. 

This is what he fought for every day. 

Jane cleared her throat a few minutes into the silence, popping her head up to meet his eyes. “Do you… think we could read one of those books?”

A smile came to his face instantly, amused at her request. “I thought those were and I quote ‘space garbage.’”

“They are.” She insisted with a level of disgust that he had to admit made her look positively adorable. “But I need new ammunition to bug James with. And while we’re here…”

She would never admit she actually liked any of those books, of course, but Kaidan wasn’t going to embarrass her over something so inconsequential. “Ok, pick a title. I’ll read it and you can relax.”

As she settled against him once more, datapad in hand, Kaidan imagined that they were two people without a war to fight, who could enjoy a peaceful moment with something as normal as romance novels and cuddling. 

For now, it was enough.

1.Are you named after anyone? I am not! But I am named after a bird. The quetzal to be specific.

2. When was the last time I cried? Um. I honestly don't remember. Maybe a few weeks ago?

3. Do you have kids? Nope. I am way too young. I would like to be a parent one day though.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? Yeah I think so. Mostly when I am really comfortable with who I am speaking to or when someone is pissing me off.

5. What sports do you play/have you played? It has been YEARS but I used to play soccer. Nothing now.

6. What is the first thing you notice about people? Uuuuum. I guess their voice and energy? I can kind of tell whether someone is annoying or not by their voice and their energy and for some reason those things are intertwined for me.

7. Scary movies or happy endings? Oh happy endings all the way, my dudes. I cannot handle scary movies unless they have a good ending amd even then I sometimes can't do it. I'm a sucker for happy ending and they never bore me. ☺

8. Any special talents? I can touch my tongue to my nose? And I can snap my fingers pretty loudly without hurting them? I don't really have any other than that.

9. Where were you born? Phoenix, Arizona. Born and raised. I've also never lived anywhere else.

10. What are your hobbies? I like to read, write, draw, watch youtube, and occasionally dabble with my instruments. I can play the viola and piano. I currently have a ukulele and a guitar I'm trying to learn how to play on my own.

11. Do you have any pets? Yes. They are the family pets which makes them just as much mine as they are to the other people in my house. I have a cat and a dog. My cats is striped with a brownish grayish sandy and black color pallet. He also has slightly longer fur. My dog is some kind of blue heeler/German shepard mix. She's very vocal. Their names are Piccolo and Gigi respectively.

12. All time favorite pieces of media? I absolutely love Definitely, Maybe as I have mentioned before. I also love Pride and Prejudice the movie from 2005. My favorite books are (once again) Ask The Passengers by A.S. King and The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School by Sonora Reyes.

13. Fave subject in school? Science for middle school and my first year of high school but then English for the rest of the time.

14. Dream job? I'm not sure I have one. I think I'd like to be a therapist maybe one day or a social worker. But I'm kind of open in this deoartment.

15. Eye color? Brown. Dark brown that many people tell me they look almost black. Haha.

Hello. Me again.

I wanna do a bunch of comics as I replay the games so I won't answer everything XD but to answer a basic question;

You can play as a male or female Shepard, but Bioware intended the main character to be female. But because video games they were afraid dudebros wouldn't want to play a female lead so they just gave you a choice. Both are called "Shepard" because it's the last name. (Femshep's first name is Jane).

There is also character creation. So you can create a Shepard OC. but Shepard is one of the weirdest main characters I've ever seen, because as the years have gone on... instead of people leaning more into the self insert style of mass Effect, default Jane Shepard has become more and more popular. So these days most art and fanfic will write her as a default instead of a player/reader insert. it's fucking wild!

Also I am still in ME1 so she's still in uniform, but uh... that doesn't last.

As for everything else... I selfishly don't want to spoil?? Even tho you can literally google it?? 😂 Because I wanna draw it because who boy.... do my babies have a storm coming....

I see! That is super cool, though--I like that female Shepard was intended to be the more canonical between the selectable characters. I wasn't 100% sure about it because I do remember seeing a mention or two about an option between male and female, but I've really only ever seen concept of female Shepard.

And I also think that it's super neat that Shepard's default is so popular! It's sort of a double-reverse of what you'd expect, and people are so baller for that, to be honest.

It sort of reminds me of how--when I play a Legend of Zelda game--I'll usually default to the names I can chose as being the canonical names. Link as Link, Epona as Epona, etc... same with the Pokemon games.

I think part of the reason for that might also be due to consistency. It seems like Mass Effect is a chronological series that takes place over the course of a period of time that features the same characters, so it'd make sense for the main character to remain the same over time.

You look at game series like Fallout, customization is much easier to get a hold of because each game (if I'm correct) features a new main character. It allows for more customization of the experience to fit around the character, but since Mass Effect is in that chronological story that follows the same or a similar cast, it's easier to have an agreed-upon default than it is to have a thousand or so different Shepherds, especially since they all end up sharing the same name (which takes away a part of that customization process).

It could also be that, as Shepard is the name given to the character, it feels ingenuine to a lot of people to have them deviate from their default--as if it's changing their identity. Already having the name implies that the character doesn't exist in a vacuum--they already existed before in the context of the game.

I! Am! Rambling! But I do find it super interesting to think about this!

3 ships: Stiles/Peter (Teen Wolf), Shepard/Wrex (Mass Effect), and I just fell back into Dero hell, I don’t know how this happenend, and it’s especially bad because finding all the clips is really hard so I can’t even do a proper rewatch :(

First ship: I’m also gonna say Buffy/Spike. I shipped them before I even knew what shipping was. And Phoebe/Cole was probably around the same time.

The first ship I read fanfic for was Taichi/Yamato, and here we are XD

Last movie: The Menu. It was different from what I thought it would be, but really good. Especially as a customer service person ;)

Last song: I don’t know, whatever was on the radio at work yesterday.

Currently reading: Idol by Louise O’Neill, and I started The Adventures of Isabel by Candas Jane Dorsey (because of the name, obviously), but I had to but it down because it’s written in Canadian slang, and I think it’s a really funny book, but I just don’t understand the jokes because I don’t know half the words :/

Currently watching: Glow Up, and looking forward to starting season two of Alice in Borderland today.

A book you want to reread: the night circus by erin morgenstern. i read it like seven years ago and i remember loving it, and reading the starless sea last year made me want to revisit it.

Any books you reread every 2 to 5 years: coraline. the perks of being a wallflower. there's probably more but i'm blanking...i'd love to be the type of person who cites like, jane austen here but i am unfortunately not the romanticised version of myself that exists in my head

Any books you reread once a year? i usually read landline by rainbow rowell every december but i missed it this year, i was just too busy/didnt prioritize it.

the book you reread within the shortest turnaround time: i must be real that i've read any way the wind blows by rainbow rowell several times since its release. the themes of healing from trauma and building community + magic goats + one single token butch + shepard got to me okay.

the book you've reread the most times: if we're talking about over the course of my entire life, i regret to say it's most likely eclipse, as in the third twilight book, due to a real thing i went through at age 12 where i read it over and over whenever i could to the point of memorizing the first two chapters. could possibly be the babysitters club book where they go to disney world, though.
