Awful/Terrible ASL emoji
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: 2 emojis of the ASL sign for terrible/awful, the first says awful and the second says terrible]
I wanted these for personal use so I made them. free to use for anyone in discords or on AAC boards just please don't claim them as your own but ‼️ there are rules ‼️
Do not use these as a reference to learn ASL. this is the concept of the sign not an exact replication of it
Do not use these as a reference to make your own awful/terrible emoji. especially if you're hearing. I am Deaf. hearing people cannot create emojis of any sign language.

As a juxtaposition to my last post, in case people would go "well yeah duh!" Like obviously you would answer like that to people: here's an example of what happens sometimes.

Is sign language something the Order teaches?
After asking that, I realise that it's much more likely that Handlers learn it as part of their education (being the one who engages with the common folk out of the duo).
But what if a Hunter wanted to learn it? Would they have to request being taught as well?
And outside of the Order, how is sign language treated in the overall world?
it is, actually! sign language is pretty widely taught as a second language in Adrania. that's not to say that everyone is fluent, though, and there are different dialects just like in real life (ie ASL vs BASL) if someone is fortunate enough to receive schooling they will typically study common sign language (which is mainly used for trade and is very formal), but whether or not they retain it and can still understand it varies from person to person, and again there are variations that will differ from the basic common version taught in a school. with the class divide in Adrania, i also imagine there would be a drastic difference between the culture and sign of lower classes (who most likely will not have received any kind of education) and the upper classes.
and you're right, Lea is the one that is more proficient in it between the two, mainly because they are the one doing most of the talking. the hunter has a basic understanding and can typically interpret signs, but isn't the best at signing themself. if you go with Merry in Blackwater, you can see her, Mal, and Branwen all sign to each other, with Branwen actually being hoh. the hunter recognizes that Branwen calls Merry a bastard, but for the most part the three sign too fast for the hunter to understand. Merry and Mal will continue to use sign throughout the story, and they actually use a variation that neither the hunter nor Lea will recognize, even if they were signing slower; think of it like the thieves cant, but in sign.

my grandfather is deaf from bombs from world war 2 so he has been for a lonG time and he can hear a bit now with hearing aids.
for some reason this makes people think they need to scream in his ear for him to hear them... that's not how that works (at least for his type of hearing aids)
if you project a loud noise directly into an amplifier (a hearing aid, not a cochlear) you're going to distort the sound. all he hears is the screeching of his his aid trying to adjust to a sudden, loud noise.
if you back up a bit, let him see your mouth as you speak, and lower your voice into a more even measure, he can hear you!!
every deaf/Deah/HoH person is different and how their aids work for them will be different. if you take a generalized approach and just YELL at every person who struggles with hearing, you're making a mistake.

I got to use my german sign language skills at the café today! I was able to have all the small conversations I usually have with customers. like when it started to drizzle I told them they could find a place inside whenever, that kinda stuff. and I understood everything they signed!

Y'all. We've got to talk about that fucking gandalf big naturals joke.
If you're going to post a meme where the whole joke is just the image of a guy with tits, ha ha, look at this man, he's got tits, what more do I need to say about how hilarious that is, etc etc, at least tag it so people like me can block it. I get that none of y'all are thinking about what exactly it is you're laughing at, you don't mean it, but for a website full of people who never stop yelling at the top of their lungs about how trans inclusive they are, I'd think some of you guys could do a little better.
#i get it right?#people don't think about what they laugh at. laughter just comes naturally.#once when i was a cashier these two girls ran up to the cashier next to me asking where their parents were#and the cashier's customer grinned real wide and said they'd probably already left. his whole posture and tone indicated that it was a joke#and that everything was okay and nothing serious was happening#when he laughed the cashier laughed too and the kids left#a minute later another customer came up to the cashier and went OFF on her for it#saying what if those kids had panicked and run into the parking lot or street looking for their parents etc#and this cashier was a sweet old grandma who spent all her breaks knitting. she never would have wanted to endanger those kids#or even just freak them out#she just laughed on instinct because her social instincts told her to follow the first customer's tone and body language#which were telling her that everything was fine and that a joke was happening and to laugh#i would definitely have laughed. I know me. I don't think quickly enough to react the way I want to in person#so i get it. but like. after we laugh it's up to us to think a little bit about why we laughed#and where exactly the punchline was#while y'all have already signed up for my in-tags essay:#I know you could make the argument that the humor lies in seeing a character who doesn't come off as sexy-#-now having a trait that contrasts with that image in a surprising way. the unexpected is the core of how humor works#but I've found the line between that and making fun of the idea of a man having 'feminine' qualities is REALLY thin#just asking that the next time you see a similar joke you think a little bit about the mechanics of it#how it works. why it works. where the punchline is. how a man who fits that description would feel about it

Shout-out to Sho, who signed the "sender's signature" box on the customs declaration for my Persona 3 The Movie: #1 Spring of Birth Blu-ray in English with all caps
Something about seeing that made my day. It's so cute in a way I can't describe
