Breaking News: Heptopods in VRChat!

You heard correctly: we've discovered that heptopods do indeed exist within the world of VRChat!

While winding down after an exhausting day, our Laboratory Head Zepht found his discovered heptopod roaming around the world! Apparently this discovery involved programming a blender, whatever the hell that's supposed to mean.

A great day for us indeed at the Lab and heptopodkind! Who knows, there could be more heptos in VRChat that we are yet to discover!

I gotta wonder how many of us got brainworms from Little King's Story/Serial Expeirments Lain/early macos x's assistants and wound up making TV-in-suit gijinkas sometime afterwards. LKS's TV Dinnah is particularly memorable for having a lot of characterization and he's got a lot of overlap with Tenna in regards to behavior and staging although Tenna's got way more personality. There's even a direct reference to LKS in some of the missable chapter 3 text (very minor spoiler).

If on the off chance anyone decides to play LKS from this, get the wii version and emulate it. It's got an incredibly slow start but once you get 3-4 hours in and it opens up the rest is fantastic. The PC version is unplayably buggy unfortunately.

BEEFMASTER lives once again!

To celebrate, I put together a lightning-fast VRC Avatar for a friend so we could attend Furality. Unfortunately, life happened at the last minute and neither of us could go--but now I know the absolute fastest I can make a workable avatar! This is 4-5 evenings of work so far. It definitely lacks polish in a lot of ways, but I'm pleased I can get something functional up and running so quickly.

Another VRChat commission; a creature from the game Limbus Company (I think; I just do what I'm told here). Part of a series of pieces I've been asked to do from this game for use as custom game avatars.

Tried to get as close to the stylization of the original sprite as possible; which did necessitate some compromises but I do think I was close enough that I had to include a turnaround to prove it is actually 3D. Uses a hand painted main texture, a glow and transparency map for various effects, and features an inverse hull outline (isolated to specific regions on the model) for a bit of extra pop.

About 14k tris; a little higher than strictly needed but a lot of that is the polycount being duplicated by the inverse hull effect.

Something @literarybard & I have been working on (on and off), touched up models of DJ/NJ for our personal projects/VRchat!! J is handling the Unity biz, and I've been doing the texturing/modelling

To preface we are very new to both blender/unity, so we're working up to being more ambitious (these are MAJOR WIPS) with what we want out of these models

Obviously nothing insane but I've started adding custom textures like the planets, and some knitted texturing on Js sweater - my next step is to make my own textures overtop of the existing ones for higher quality/custom painting (as seen below, Neon Js monitor also has redone texturing), though I want to keep it within the style of the original

The end goal is to have a few alt model clothing, like the ones I conceptualised overtop of their references (seen below, I have posted these before and they were a hit), along with some other toggles including their props and to implement some awesome animation toggles too for VRC functionality - at the moment they have basic movement physics in the headphones, cape, sneaker lips, and DJ has a tilt effect in her head!

These models won't be available to others unless either of us give specific permission, we do not play on public vrchat worlds so they will be safe and snug within our grasp, im super excited to keep working on these and hopefully, eventually, the other nsrtists for friends/fun!
