If anyone is curious why I'm sayin it here it's cause my favorite musicians have gotten me through rough points in my life and inspire my art and I like UGH.

Cut Copy - Bright Like Neon Love

Cut Copy’s debut album, Bright Live Neon Love, is a mash up of 80’s new wave and Daft Punk electro-pop. Kraftwerk is the other influence as evidenced by the Autobahn synth car horn hat-tip that kicks off the record. At first blush the album’s sounds feels a little less inspired by and more derivative of Daft Punk. Particularly the Discovery-esque tracks Future and Saturdays. While I do like those songs, what sets Cut Copy apart is the new wave rock bubbling under the surface. Starting with Saturdays (Reprise) the guitar moves to the fore which makes the album much more interesting. By the time you get to Twilight they’ve moved almost into Primal Scream territory. My favorite song on the album, Going Nowhere, is the best example of the new wave/electro-pop hybrid. A driving dance beat, fat bass line and crunchy guitar riffs. It feels like the song could become either a Daft Punk or New Order song if pushed slightly in either direction. Instead, like the majority of the record, it manages walk that tightrope and find its own sound in the process.

Proof that not everything I listen to is from the Eighties. This Cut/Copy album is from 2017, and only SOUNDS like it is from the Eighties. 😂 Actually it’s quite good in an unobtrusive, modern background music kind of way. (That’s meant to be a compliment but I think I failed)

Cut Copy - In Ghost Colors ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @cut_copy #cutcopy #australia #dance ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you’re not familiar with Cut Copy but you love to dance, you’re really missing out. They’re an Australian dance band that has evolved quite a bit over the years, though I’m admittedly WAY more into the earliest three albums with this one being my #1. That being said, this album is also just straight up in my list of favorite dance albums of all time. They were fresh off of a pretty successful freshman effort with Bright Like Neon Love (also fantastic), and they hooked up with Tim Goldsworthy of DFA Records fame (think LCD Soundsystem!). 2008 was both an exciting and endlessly frustrating time in music, particularly with indie labels because there were a million good new bands coming out of the woodwork and frankly it was kind of hard to keep up. When some of the heaviness of the rock world and most saccharine of the radio pop world both faded in the mid 2000s, lots of bands like Bloc Party and Cut Copy became household names both for the indie obscurist snobs and the low-investment easy going folks at the same time. The found a way to blend some of the most appealing parts of electronic music with near flawlessly crafted straightforward pop structures. Most of the bands that came out of that era have either 1) disbanded 2) changed their style entirely or 3) had REAL difficulty with recreating the magic of 10 years ago (getting old is tough, I get it!).
